Pete Weber Wins Record Fifth U.S. Open to Surpass Father, Don Carter

New this year... Handicap is 80% from 230, which will add anadditional 8 pins per game (32 pins per set) to your score versus

previous years where the handicap was 80% from 220

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. — PeteWeber of St. Ann, Mo., became the mostsuccessful bowler in U.S Open history Sun-day, Feb. 26, winning the most challengingmajor title in bowling for a record fifth timeat Brunswick Zone-Carolier with a strike onhis final ball in the 10th frame to nip topqualifier Mike Fagan of Dallas, 215-214.

Weber, who came into the stepladder fi-nals as the No. 4 qualifier, threw clutch shotsin three matches to win, but none was morecritical than his strike on his final ball in thetitle match. Needing at least a nine-countspare and strike to win, Weber threw a per-fect pocket shot on his first ball, but left a10 pin. After converting the spare, he threwan identical shot that carried for a strike.

In winning the title, Weber broke a tiewith his late father, Professional BowlersAssociation legend Dick Weber, and hisfather’s close friend, the late Don Carter, who each won the forerunner to the U.S.

major title-winners list with his ninth title, behind only Earl Anthony’s 10.

“That’s probably the calmest I’ve everbeen needing to throw a shot to win,” headded. “Not to toot my own horn, but I thinkI’m prouder of myself than anyone else. I’vealways wanted to be the one to throw a striketo win.”

In advancing to the title match, Weberthrew critical shots in two preliminarymatches, coming from behind to defeat RyanShafer of Horseheads, N.Y., 223-191, in theopening match and Australia’s Jason

Belmonte, 225-213, in the semifinal contest.“I threw strikes in the seventh, eighth and

ninth in all three games and put pressure onthose guys,” Weber said. “The way thoseguys performed was excellent. My hat’s offto them. They bowled amazing.”

Weber earned $60,000 and an automaticberth in the Round of 36 for the PBA Tour-nament of Champions in April. Fagan col-lected $30,500, Belmonte $15,000 andShafer, who failed to win a title in his 14thtelevision appearance in a major champion-ship, earned $10,000.

Open — the BPAA All Star — four times.“Dad, I know you were watching,” We-

ber said as he looked up toward heaven af-ter the win. “I know you’re proud, and I’msorry I broke your record. “This is my great-est title ever,” Weber said. “To win five U.S.Opens and pass Dick Weber and Don Cartersays a lot, but I’ll never say I’m better thanthem. They paved the way for us to be here.It was an honor and a privilege to join themwhen I won my fourth U.S. Open, and it’seven more of an honor to be the first one towin five.

“This is the tournament I look forwardto ever year,” he added. “I live for the U.S.Open because I know, no matter what, I havea chance to win.”

At age 49 years, 189 days, Weber becamethe oldest player ever to win the U.S. Open, breaking the record set by 46-year-old NormDuke last year at Carolier. And he movedinto second place on the PBA’s all-time

• AND THE award goes to...This past weekend, the Academy Awards

were presented to the motion picture indus-try. While bowling doesn’t have a “red car-pet” and no one is asked “who are you wear-ing,” the bowlers instead are asked, “Whatwere you throwing?”

Awards are something that bowlers havecertainly grown accustomed to receivingbased on their performances in their leagues, local and state associations, the national or-ganization and the respective halls of fame.

Here in the bowling capital of the world,we have some of the best bowlers at everylevel. Therefore, for every award that is be-ing presented, there should be a Metro De-troit Bowler’s application being reviewed.I have come to realize there are a few rea-sons this is not occurring.

First, how many of you actually haveprepared a bowling resume? If you haven’t,you should. With our current technology, this could be a spreadsheet in which youenter all of your averages, tournament scoresand participation, honors, etc. that you haveaccumulated during your bowling career.

Secondly, each association at every levelhas an awards committee. I am chairpersonof the Metro Detroit USBC Awards Com-mittee. I would love to receive applicationsfor every award that is available to our

In the rush for entries, somesenior tournaments are lower-ing the minimum age to 45 orlower from the usual 50. Thereare super senior divisions forbowlers 60 and over and supersuper divisions for 70 and up.Is bowling going to get likeboxing? Boxing once had eightdivisions — period. Now thereare junior and super groupingsadded to the original, making24. And there are at least threesanctioning groups and that’swhy there are so many boxingchampions, 72 and counting,as other newly-created weightdivisions and boxing associations pop up.In bowling, in most cases, youngsters andoldsters, what counts is average, not age.

TIPS

FROM

THE P

ROS

If you do not set up properly in yourstance it makes it very difficult to correct aproblem later in your approach. Think of thecenter of the ball as swinging under yourshoulder or armpit during your swing.

In order to keep your swing in close, digyour elbow into your side in your stance po-sition or tuck your elbow in front, restingon your hipbone. This also allows you touse your body to support some of the weightof the ball in your stance.

As you begin your pushaway, concen-trate on your elbow staying in close and in-side the ball. You might want to feel likethe elbow brushes against your body as youplace the ball into the swing. Incorporatethis tip into your routine, and I am sure itwill improve your armswing.

• WE HAVE talked about the swing inprevious articles. This week we will revisitthe swing and focus on tucking our elbowin the stance.

I see many bowlers who let their elbowsfloat in their stance (elbow away frombody). In other words, their elbow is awayfrom their body as they begin their approach. This makes it more difficult to achieve agood solid push away and armswing.

• THE BUDWEISERMichigan Majors Bowling As-sociation 46th year is off to agood start. It is not that theentries increased. They re-mained about the same as lastyear after two tournaments. The good sign is the amountof new members joining theMMBA. There have been 30rookies joining the ranks in thefirst two tournaments. This isthe most rookies joining in thefirst two months in many ayear.

They have made them-selves known with sevenrookies making it to the paywindow. John Kelley justmissed winning in his very first tournament. He placed second and Derek Hively, anotherrookie, fourth at Sterling Lanes. What a greatsign. The Budweiser Michigan Majors is

alive and well. The most important thing is

don’t give up after one tour-nament. That is what hap-pened last year. Many rookiescalled it quits after only onetournament when having a badouting. Give yourself achance. It takes time to getadjusted bowling with the bestbowlers in the state of Michi-gan, moving lanes after eachgame. It is not easy to win atitle in the Michigan Majors.

Duane Henderson is a greatexample. Henderson won hisfirst title at ThunderbowlLanes after 15 years in theMMBA. He did it in style go-

ing wire to wire as the leading qualifier, No.1 seed in the stepladder finals.

Matt Randall became only the sixthmember to be a repeat champion. Randall

defended his 2011 title by winning his fifthoverall title at Sterling Lanes.

The other repeat champs are DickBeattie, Match Game Championship 1979-80; John Mazza, M-66 Bowl 1984-85; KenWyatt, Fairlanes 1990-91; Dave Ewald,Match game Championship 2003-04;Nunzio Marino-George Gohagen, Doubles2008-09.

* * *• THE COST in joining the Budweiser

Michigan Majors is a $60 yearly dues. The

dues are what the MMBA operates on. Thecost for each regular tournament is $80 en-try fee. There is a guaranteed $1,000 firstprize. The first two tournaments paid $1,300and $1,200 for first place. The payoff is atleast a 1-in-4 ratio of the entries. All entryfees are returned, paid out in prize moneyby the end of the year.

Those interested in joining contact thetournament office at 21317 Frazho, St. ClairShores, MI 48081, by phone (586) 775-2414or the web site www.michiganmajors.com.

The tournament portion kicks off Friday, March 9 with practice squads at noonand 2 p.m. Qualifying gets underway on Saturday, March 10 at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The field will then be cut to the top 24 with match play on Sunday, March 11 at 9a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Xtra Frame stepladder finals are scheduled for 6 p.m.

A full field is expected to participate, including top PBA stars Walter Ray Will-iams Jr., Norm Duke, Pete Weber, Parker Bohn III, Ryan Shafer, Sean Rash, RhinoPage, Jason Couch, Mika Koivuniemi, Chris Barnes and Kelly Kulick.

Chris Barnes Rolls 300, Jason BelmonteWins PBA GEICO Shark Open Event

LAS VEGAS — Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, rolled the 22nd nationally-televised 300 game in Professional Bowlers Association history during the GEICOShark Open finals, but he bowled it one game too soon.

After his perfect effort in the semifinal round, Barnes lost in the GEICO SharkOpen title to Australia’s Jason Belmonte, 244-213, in a match that extended theinternational dominance in the PBA World Series of Bowling to five consecutivetitles. The finals, conducted at South Point Casino and Hotel, aired Sunday on ESPN.

The title was Belmonte’s second in the World Series and the third of his PBAcareer.

The GEICO Shark Open, the fourth and final PBA “animal pattern” champion-ships contested during the third annual PBA World Series of Bowling, almost gotthe best of Belmonte, who had struggled in the opening game of three previouselimination-format finals.

In the opening game of the “low man out” Shark finals, Barnes, who led theShark field in qualifying, posted a 234. Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., making hisfifth straight final, was next with a 205. Belmonte, with a double in the ninth and10th frames, finished with a 190 to advance when Mika Koivuniemi of Hartland,Mich., failed to double on his first shot in the 10th, leaving a 2-10 split which hefailed to convert for a 172 game.

In the title match, Belmonte almost turned the tables on Barnes, finding his lineto the pocket and running off a string of seven strikes to start the game. Barnesstarted with three strikes, but he then lost his carry. Barnes’ 7-10 split on a softpocket hit in the seventh frame gave the two-handed Australian power player a 51-pin lead. Despite an open frame by Belmonte in his seventh, Barnes was too farbehind to make up the difference.
