space.• Verona Italy is a City on the Adige River in northern Italy• Its population grew to around 35,000 to 40,000 in the

early 14th century.

Historical facts about 14th Century Verona, Italy• Verona was founded during the 4th century BC.• The city reached the highest of its political influence during the 14th

century because of the seat of power of the della Scala family.• Verona is famous for its Roman amphitheatre, the Arena, where opera is

now performed during the summer. The Arena, which is like the Roman Colosseum, was built in the mid-1st century AD on a site which at the time was outside the city walls. The ludi that has shows and games were so famous that people came to Verona to experience it.

Economy of 14th Century Verona, Italy• They earned money from shipping industries of the

town where they sold slaves, wood, spices, silks, salt, and fish.

• They developed a strong navy to protect their products in the Adriatic Sea and Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

• Verona got wealthy from the products they sold and with the money they made from art, sculptures and architecture.

Weavers of Wool and LinenThe tapestry was woven by several weavers using a loom, which is a hand operated apparatus designed for weaving fabrics. They could either be woven horizontally or vertically.

Agricultural LabourersMost farmers owned a few animals. They also usually rented land from someone to work on. The first part of the 16th century was great because there was a high demand for wool. As prices rose, farmers had to shut down so it went down. Farmers had to take care of animals and work out in the fields. They had few machines. When they did have machines they were made out of wood.

Tending LivestockThis was the woman's job. They tended the pigs, chickens, and ducks most

of the time. Their job consisted of feeding the animals and cleaning up after them.

PrintmakersA printmaker uses techniques like woodcuts or silk-screens to create images

which are transposed onto surfaces, using a printing press.

PaintersIn the early sixteenth century, the center of patronage in the arts shifted to

Rome. When painters painted, they used a lot of color. They painted little by little and all togethers the paint makes a picture.
