Message from
the Editor
Hello everyone, I hope this Top choice Magazine will find you in good health and fortune! The difference between this issue and all the other ones is very simple, we are “ticking some people
off” and making way more friends, by showcasing all the experience and results of our past efforts. Reinforcing that hard work really pays off!
When I was a kid my grandfather use to tell me “Never let anyone say ‘David is poor, but he is nice’” he told me that I shouldn’t mind if they say “David is a son of a...”. The message was it’s better to have people mad at you than feeling sorry for you. He used to say “let people talk about you, bad or good, but keep talking about you!”
So this magazine issue is a very special one, because it separates the winners from the rest of the pack (read “Kicking Ass!” on page 16) and people are really talking more about us! Thank you to all of you who talk good or bad about us, you probably have nothing better to do with your time and we are glad to help keep you occupied.
So the message from the editor is simple yet serious “Jealousy is a disease... hope you feel better soon.”
This issue features a great collection of winners from many ethnic communities in the GTA, many of which will be receiving their award during 4th Annual Multicultural Top Choice Awards (“Making of: Mul-ticultural Top Choice Awards 2009” on page 48) on November 6th. I would like to personally thank our event presenters ILAC (page 20) and St. Clair Cosmetic & Laser Clinic (page 24).
I would also like to take this opportunity to announce for the first time, that the 5th Annual Multicultural Top Choice Awards is already in the works and will be presented by David Sklar & Associates.
Top regards,David Silvestre

My discovering a flare for decorating and designing and my love with extensive knowl-edge of flowers has been an ongoing mission since childhood, From the ripe age of six, I would gather flowers for my mother from the fields after school to make that perfect bouquet in hand for the lady I love so much in my life, I today still remember the smile and joy it would bring to her. And has only perfected my passion, talent as years have gone by.
“I’m a profound believer that whatever you give, you will get back hundreds times more. Just as in nature, when you cut a precious flower off its branch to give to someone, it’s branch will grow back more flowers for us to enjoy. I, for many years wanted to open my own store, not only for me but for all the amazing people along the way that believed in me and my work. The Name H2O came to me suddenly, since it represents water and oxygen what every thing we all need to survive on. I took a 1500 square foot location on two floors with a vision of decorating it, with love, hard work; I think I have successfully achieved it, “that would best represent me.” I would like to take the time to extend a personal invite to you and your friends to visit me in person.

Breakfast Television2
BTCityTv’s Breakfast Television (BT), Toronto's #1 Morning Show is still on TOP!Written by David SilvestrePhotos by Sam Santos
The results of our survey said that Breakfast Tele-vision was voted Top Television Morning Show by the ethnic communities in the GTA.
We always had an idea of what the team of Breakfast Television was like, but we always won-dered: How are they really like behind the cameras?
Well today, we got the opportunity to find out, and we’re sharing it with you!
It was a very early start to the day, we wanted to make sure we’d have enough time to get ready as well as beat that lovely morning traffic straight into the heart of Downtown Toronto into Dundas Square. We were greeted by the producer, Kevin Forget, who was extremely gracious towards us. He led us to the studio where we were able to sit down and watch the live show being aired. We were so surprised by the organization of the show, during every commercial break, the team would start whizzing by, changing the set for the next segment. When it was a commer-cial break, we would look around to see if anyone looked tired or upset, but no! Everyone was smiling and looked happy to be there.
When the show was done, Kevin Frankish, co- host of BT, led us upstairs to where we were going to be presenting the award and showed us around. Monica was offered an amazing espresso which she enjoyed every drop of. After a little tour, we gath-ered together again to present the award. We were so surprised how real everyone was. Whether they were on-air or off, their personalities were always so genuine. During the presentation, we found that they were extremely easy to work with and cooperative.
Welcoming, caring, encouraging, positive, hap-py... just some of the words we find describe the hosts of Breakfast Television, the Top Morning Television Show in the GTA!
They couldn’t express how thankful they were for everyone who voted for them. They also wanted to acknowledge that the show would not be possible without the collective efforts of everyone involved in the show. “This award belongs to the entire team” they said. From our perspective and experience ev-erything is a reflection of how the show is organized, and in this regard we have to thank Kevin Forget the producer of BT, he was helpful and professional on all levels, a perfect example of what this show is made of! •

Three years later at age 17, Kevin worked for CKNY Television as a reporter, camera operator, news editor and even anchor! Before joining Citytv in 1991, Kevin spent nine years at The New VR in Barrie. Kevin now dedicates his time to co-hosting Breakfast Television every weekday morning. With his trademark suspenders and quick wit, Kevin has gained a loyal early morning following.

16 TOP CHOICE FALL 2009 www.TopChoiceAwards.com
When I watched the movie Slum Dog Mil-lionaire, all I could say was “WOW!”, I felt as though I could relate to the movie in so many ways and it inspired me to share a little bit of my story in hopes that I could inspire someone else.
When I was 8 years old meeting Jackie Chan was all I dreamt of. Growing up in the north interior of Portugal in the small village of Mirandela, there wasn’t very much to do, fortunately enough there was a martial arts studio by my house. I believe it must have been written in my destiny. That was when I start-ed training Kung-Fu, and slowly I felt I was a little closer to my dream, at least through my imagination.
Never would I have thought that this little step was actually a BIG leap to a long jour-ney in the search of myself through fun and adventure.
Every time I think about it, I can remem-ber the smell of the dojo, a training room for martial arts, and it brings back the memories
of being part of a world where you either make it or break it.
At the time, back in Portugal, growing up was certainly different then it is now. There wasn’t a “new age” way of thinking as there is now here in Canada. Then, when you were a kid, you’d be punished on the spot for doing something wrong, everyone knew what a “physi-cal shot” was, especially in martial arts class. I quickly learnt that you either win or lose.
Not too long ago my son said to me “Dad, I got 3rd place in track and field at school to-day!” I was very happy for him, “Wow! Good job, how many kids where running?” When he told me “three kids were in the race”, I couldn’t help but say “So, you LOST?” Clear-ly, that was my mistake, all the other parents looked at me and said “No way! He’s not a loser, he’s the last winner!”
That’s how I learnt that in Canada, we only have winners, even if they lose.
This way of thinking was completely dif-ferent compared to what I learnt during my
childhood. I always believed that I should strive for the best at everything I did, never settling for second best... or last winner. It was this way of thinking that made me passionate for life, to fight for anything I loved.
In Slumdog Millionaire, when the main character was a child, he did what he had to do in order to get the autograph of his movie star idol. His determination and motivation was a result of his environment, an environ-ment that pressured him to fight for every-thing. My dream was to eventually meet Jackie Chan and get his autograph, I knew he would never visit a small village in Portugal, so knew I had to dream big and fight for it.
I kept training Kung-Fu and became a Na-tional Champion in Portugal. I ended up doing many television shows which resulted in many great opportunities. In July 1996, I was given an opportunity to represent Portugal in The World Championships in Hamilton, Canada. I started thinking: Hamilton is right bedside Toronto, and I know Toronto is frequented

my celebrities all the time, maybe I could stick around and be lucky to complete my dream!
I had earned the respect of my little city, the problem was that I was growing, and my vision was getting clearer - I knew what I needed to do with my life. I decided to visit Canada to represent Portugal in The World Championships and won, I had become The World Champion!
With many offers asking me to stay, it gave me a perfect opportunity to continue my dream, so I decided to stay and build a new life, keeping Jackie Chan as my inspiration and motivation.
I bounced through the work that typical Portuguese immigrants get when they arrive to Canada, started off in landscaping, then construction and finally cleaning. One eve-ning when I was cleaning a bakery, I stopped to read the newspaper on my break. To my surprise, Jackie Chan was on the cover, the ar-ticle stated that he was in Toronto working on the movie Tuxedo with Jennifer Love Hewitt.
I told my boss that I was going to meet him, take a picture with him and that I was going to speak to him. “Dreaming doesn’t pay the bills, plus.. you don’t even speak English!” he said. I looked back and smiled. I was used to aggressive and discouraging words, they were my best friends, they were my fuel to go after what I wanted.
I read that Jackie Chan and other celebri-ties were going to be at the CN Tower the next day for a media interview, I knew this was the opportunity I had been waiting for. Security was so tough the next day that I didn’t think I would be able to get through. I was so close, I knew I couldn’t give up then! It was then when I realized Jackie Chan’s entourage were all wearing red shirts and black hats. It must be destiny, I thought. I was wearing a red shirt and a black hat. I saw an opportunity and took it, I blended into the team and made it past security easily. When we arrived at the top I asked Jackie if I could take a photo with him “for a friend” and he was as humble and
friendly as I always imagined.I couldn’t explain the sense of achieve-
ment I had felt, a dream that I had for so long, I completed it. It inspired me to start a new dream: I had decided I wanted to open up a Martial Arts School of my own.
A few years into the business, the studio had developed quite rapidly. We had many students and many champions, which caught the attention of local media. Stories about the studio and my teachings were becoming popular and made me realize the true benefit of what I was doing. Through these stories the Portuguese community began to recog-nize my teachings and I thought this feeling of recognition should be something that oth-ers should feel. That’s when we started asking people in the community if they knew any-one that should be recognized for something extraordinary that they have done. This idea evolved into what you know today as Top Choice Awards and this is only a small part of the story...

Why Study in Canada? Just Ask a Student “Why Study English in Canada?? I am from Europe so I had many opportunities where to go. I was in England and it was really bad for me because a lot of people from Europe were there and from my country. Therefore, I decided to go to study in Canada because it is one of the safest countries in the world. I was really surprised when I arrived in Canada and entered into the new world. Everybody is friendly. Let me give you an example, I was with my friends in the subway trying to find the way to go downtown and one woman asked us if we needed help.
It was really amazing! My biggest concern was the free time ... what would I do after school? Fortunately there was always something to do. You can go shopping, walking around Toronto, participate in any festival, watch a movie, see the High Park or The Beaches and relax. Visit museums or art galleries or just be with your friends walking and talking. All these activities allow me to learn a new culture. That is why I chose Canada, to learn something new about this nice country, about the culture and meet people from all over the world. Canada met my needs and expectations and that is why I was happy there.”Tomas from Czech Republic
“I came to Toronto because it has a lot of people from different countries and I wanted to meet other cultures. People here are more friendly than in other places, so don’t worry you will always have someone to help you here. Toronto is very safe, so you can walk in the streets at night and nothing happens. So if you want to have fun, cultural
and interesting attractions, and shopping you need to come to Toronto. I love this city.”Luce from Mexico
“Canada is one of the best countries in the world. It is very young and multicultural. Canada makes me feel comfortable and very safe as people are very friendly and helpful. Here there are four strong seasons, summer which is beautiful, green and warm; fall is fantastic with leaves changing to wonderful different colors; winter brings a lot of winter sports, like skiing and skating, also hockey is very interesting to watch; and spring brings many flowers. So, Canada welcomes everyone from

The cost of tuition at a Canadian university ranges from $10,000 to $20,000 which is far lower than comparative tuition in the US or UK. Canada offers
world-class universities, such as McGill, University of Toronto and University of British Columbia which are renowned world wide and consistently highly ranked against well-know Ivy League schools in the US or Oxford and Cambridge in the UK. In addition, all Canadian universities offer excellent education which is different in other countries, like the US, UK or Australia.

every nation, it doesn’t matter your color, religion, which country you are from or your sexual orientation.” Henrique from Brazil
“The place I have decided to stay in Canada is Toronto. There are many reasons why I came to Toronto. There is a lot of excitement in downtown Toronto, all the tourist attractions, multiculturalism and friendly people. There are a lot of buildings and lots of cool things to do such as going to Canada’s Wonderland, observing the ancient art at the ROM, and of course rising up to the top of the CN Tower. There are also other places in Ontario that are near Toronto such as Montreal, Ottawa, Niagara Falls and
many others. I love Canada a lot and I am planning to stay for quite a while.”Hassan from Saudi Arabia
“When I arrived in Canada I couldn’t believe my eyes! Canada is a beautiful country and the government really cares about the infrastructure so it keeps the country in good condition so
visitors and residents can enjoy their lives in a safe environment. Canada has good energy! People are happy and very friendly. It is a country that makes you want to stay longer. It is impossible not to go back to Canada.Alex from Brazil
“I’ve chosen Canada to Study English because it is a multicultural country. I can find Korean food at any corner so when I want to have the food that I had at home it is very easy! Canada
also gives me the opportunity to know other cultures. This country is opened to receive all people from anywhere in the world, so everybody feels that they belong to Canada.” Yae-jin from South Korea
Not only the universities, but Canada’s college system, high school programs, and English language schools all offer superior education at comparatively affordable prices.
Multicultural and Welcoming Canada has a policy of encouraging multicultural diversity. Students who come to Canada are surprised to experience friendly citizens and safe streets. Students, like immigrants, feel welcomed and at home very quickly in Canada.
Safe CitiesCanada’s cities are very safe. In addition to walking on our streets, Canada offers a very safe public transportation system.
Work OpportunitiesInternational students who study at ILAC are well-prepared to enter a Canadian university or college. After graduation, they have the opportunity to work legally in Canada. Also, international students can work on campus while studying at university or college.

You have to be mindful of the dress-code in your company and, if there isn’t one that has been presented to you, you have to take clues from your working environment and the people you work with. The type of business, environment and location will define your business attire. Clothes, accessories and make-up should harmonize with each other and correspond to your body type and personality.
Law rms, banks and account-ing companies representatives need to dress simply and conser-vatively. You should always have traditional business suits in dark and neutral colors with corre-sponding tops, blouses, jumpers o r polo-necks of quality
fabrics in your wardrobe. A white blouse is a universal variant. Acces-sories should be simple and non-distracting. Apply your make-up and fragrance using a light touch.
In the advertising, entertainment and
fashion industr ies you can be more open
to being creative in your of ce attire. Bright colors and various fabrics will make your look more appealing and attractive. A creative work eld also allows more
freedom in choosing accessories and a compatible make-up look. Compatibility and blending of certain elements of your image can complete your fashionable professional look. Comfortable co-ordinated separates are a good choice for those ladies working in settings such as health care or other similar elds. The goal is to create an image of professionalism and approachability.
If your company is going business-casual or implement-ing a “casual Friday” policy, then women can choose to wear pantsuits, separates, or shirts. Blouses, sweaters, or sweater sets may be worn, but not baggy, revealing or denim clothes. Stick to basic dark and neutral colors while co-ordinating tops, shirts or slacks.
You often hear slogans such as “Dress for success!” and “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have!”. Modern, professional women’s styles correspond not only to accepted practice, but also re ect femininity and personality. Though many women believe their personal style has no place in business, times are changing. Minor fashionable details are becoming more common in the wardrobes of businesswomen. These details can include bold, chunky gold jewellery, brighter colours and bigger patterns.
ARE YOU “WITH IT”?A real career-oriented businesswoman manages not only to perform her professional duties and be successful but she also knows how to take care of her appearance, attire and personal style. The number one rule is you always need to look profes-sional, neat and be “with it”.

Now that we have mentioned the different types of business and appropriate basic attire, let’s investigate the current styles in business wear in 2008.
It is essential to understand the basics for mixing and match-ing, and using this foundation to add your personal creative touch. The main items that you must have in your wardrobe are well- tted black pants, a black skirt, a white crisp cotton shirt and a well-tailored black jacket. Now you can add trendy or personal pieces one at a time. It would be easy to change up the classic look with various cotton tops, turtle-necks, stylish tanks and necklaces. Always make sure your clothes are of a good quality and t you properly.
You can create a totally person-al, but professional, business look. This year’s fashion demonstrates that silhouettes are becoming bigger with more flowing and
draping styles. The fabric prints are over-sized this year; plaids, houndstooth and herringbone patterns are all exaggerated in bigger and larger patterns. Wide-legs and flares are making their return. Vintage looks and pieces with “school-marm” fabrics from the 40’s are the latest trend once again. There is no shortage of pieces to choose from when it comes to person-alizing your professional image. Two fashion fads that should never show themselves in the work place are “purposely exposed” undergar-ments and slogan t-shirts.

What is a Wee Reporter?
A Wee Reporter is a kid anywhere in the world who can share videos, pictures or stories through www.WeeReporters.com. They can report on things that are going on in their school, community or even country!
Why was www.WeeReporters.com created?
www.WeeReporters.com was created so that kids from around the world can connect with each other and learn from each others experiences. It’s similar to Facebook, but for kids. It’s safer and doesn’t have mature content.
What does the logo stand for?
The eyes in the logo represent the children’s point of view. The reporters stand for covering what’s going on. The play button means that when you send a video, you can see it. And the antenna sums it up by showing that this can be done all around the world.

Hey everyone, it’s Dyvine, and Bradlee and we are here at Blue Springs Golf Course in Milton at 7:00am. The rea-son why we’re here is because we’re participating in the Future Golf Stars tournament.
If you were here, you would be just as amazed as we are. The field is so long and so green, it looks like the owners just painted the grass on the ground. The air is so crisp and fresh, every breath I take feels like a boost of energy. There was no garbage anywhere, it was all so clean. The people there were so kind, enthusiastic and very polite.
Although it was a competition, ev-eryone was kind to their competitors. It was so quiet around except when someone would swing really well. Bra-dlee would always shout “Yeah! You’re the best dude!” to anyone that would swing good, I would have lost my voice if I shouted every time he had a good swing because they were always good! The only constant sound I heard were the birds chirping, it was so different compared to Toronto.
We were so hungry when it was finally time to eat, there were so many pizza boxes with so many toppings to choose from! There were also these delicious traditional Indian turnover called samo-sa. I had never even heard of it before, and was a little nervous to try them, but they were so good when I did.
Blue Springs Golf Course is a beautiful place to go. When the tournament fin-ished, everyone gathered to listen to the winner’s speeches. The winner ended up being our tour guide when we start-ed to play, that means we learned from the best. After that, we interviewed the owner and founder of the tournament as well as the 1st Place Winner.
We can’t wait to go there again and cover another event or participate in another Future Golf Stars Tournament, maybe then we’ll win first place!

80 years of saving eyesThe Bochner Eye Institute celebrates their 80th birthdayWritten by: Dyvine SPhotos by: Bradlee S
Wow, we were on the red carpet... ex-cept not for a movie premier, but for the Bochner Eye Institute’s 80th anni-versary. Before we went inside, we had the opportunity to interview guests, in-cluding two that came all the way from San Diego to celebrate this occasion.
It was better than we had imagined, everything was so elegant and beautiful. The Toronto Raptors mascot was by the door greeting all the guests and he gave us a high five! When we walked in we saw sushi being served, Bradlee
and I were so hungry that we had three pieces each!
Everyone was trying to interview the doctors that own the business, and guess what? We were the only ones that got to interview them! We asked all
three doctors a few ques-tions such as their names and how long they’ve been an eye doctor. When we asked Dr. Raymond M. Stein for his name, Bra-dlee was quick to say “So
everybody loves you? Because every-body loves Raymond, right?” Everyone started to laugh. Then we interviewed Dr. Albert Cheskes and finally Dr. Har-

old A. Stein, who is not only a doctor but also the author of many books that I have enjoyed, such as “While I Re-member”, we asked Dr. Stein how the institute is still running after 80 years and running one of the top institutes in Toronto. Dr. Stein told us that they are the official eye institute for the Toronto Blue Jays and that even other eye doc-tors come to Bochner Eye Institute to get their eyes checked.
When we finished interviewing the doc-tors Bradlee and I saw a bunch of kids going downstairs so we followed them. There were a lot of operating rooms

downstairs and we weren’t sure where to go so we followed the voices of the other kids. We finally found the kids and started talking to them. We found out they were Dr. Cheskes grandchil-dren, and right away we asked to inter-view them as well.
As the time came for us to leave, we were escorted by the Toronto Raptors’ mascot. I couldn’t help but think how cool it will be to celebrate the 80th an-niversary for the Wee Reporters. It was a wonderful event and I can’t wait to attend the Bochner Eye Institute’s 90th anniversary!!!

Best BuddiesThe Thrill of Ascot, the thrill of charityDavild Silvestre
We had the greatest pleasure when we recently attended one of Toronto’s most entertaining, fashionable and lively fund raising events of the year, “The Thrill of Ascot” at Woodbine
Racetrack. This annual fund raising event was conceived four years ago by John Elwood to raise funds to support the vital programs for Best Buddies Canada, whose mission is to support persons with intellectual disabilities. This year’s event was an outstanding success and we were thrilled to contribute to it. We watched the nine, breathtaking thorough-bred races and observed the beautiful ladies dressed ‘Ascot Elegant’ in dazzling hats and fashionable ensembles, and gentlemen who dressed in their spring finery on a glorious, sunny Spring afternoon in May.
Our good friends Morris Lucchese and his brother Fab Lucchese invited us to join them at this unique charity event at Woodbine Race-track. In attendance were many of Toronto’s most distinguished busi-ness and cultural leaders, as well as an international crowd who flew in from Palm Beach, New York and Europe.
Best Buddies is a fund raising organization with chapters in 42 coun-tries worldwide. It was founded in the United States by Anthony Ken-nedy Shriver in 1989. Best Buddies Canada was established 15 years ago and now has chapters in more than 175 high schools, colleges and uni-versities across Canada. Through its programs, students and individuals with intellectual disabilities are matched in one-on-one friendships, based on their interests. They spend valuable time together enjoying the same experiences that most people take for granted. Best Buddies’ programs open new worlds and lasting friendships for all participants.
Some of the afternoon’s highlights included a fabulous, gourmet buffet, outstanding entertainment, a private betting cage, a visit by one of Canada’s greatest jockey’s of all time – Sandy Hawley, silent and live auctions, nine thoroughbred races and more.
There were also two im-portant presentations. The first honour was the ‘Spirit of Friend-ship Award’ to James Raymond Cowling in recognition of his $ 500, 000 donation to Best Bud-dies. To date, this is the largest donation ever made to the char-ity. Another very special moment was the presentation of the ‘Ascot Leadership Award’ to Fab Luc-chese, a well-deserved honour to a generous and compassionate man. As a father, husband, and CEO of the Jaymor Group, Fab has overcome many challenges and has achieved great success. We congratulate Fab for exem-plifying determination and for supporting “The Thrill of Ascot” right from the very start. And, congratulations to Best Buddies!

menu is being worked on. A concept for the decor is chosen to allow consistency through-out the event. For the 4th Multicultural Top Choice Awards, we wanted to exemplify being at the top, and you can’t go any further up than space. To keep with that theme, we want-ed to use a lot of cooler colours mixed with water in various formats, which was translated through the LCD lighting, centre pieces, stage decor and many other details.
We wanted to showcase the variety of cultures that were in attendance through the entertainment. Although not all communi-ties were featured this year, we do hope that in the future we are able to do so. Through music, dance and vocals, we hope to enchant our guests through the beauty of the arts while recognizing business owners for their accom-plishments.
As well as to feature the collective immi-grant spirit in Canada, and celebrate the diver-sity of our nation.
Only once the numbers of guests are con-firmed are we able to start finalizing the re-maining fine elements of the event. Seating plans are charted and production schedules are produced. A production schedule is key for a smooth operation of the event. It allows us to be organized and prepared to evade as many unwanted surprises as possible.
Pivotal to maintaining the prestige who are associated with the event was gaining the sup-port of high quality sponsors, and the impor-tance of conveying each sponsors’ commitment to recognizing the achievements of businesses operated and owned by people who have come from all over the world and settled in our Canada.
We hope that by reading this article, your understanding of what we do here at Top Choice Awards is a little clearer and that you help us with our goal of boundless unity.
award due to a cost associated to participating in many promotions offered. Questions such as “If I was voted by the people, why is there a cost to participate?” are asked. The answer is that when you receive the congratulatory package, you earn the title which warrants you the option to participate, but you are not obligated to participate in order to promote yourself as a Top Choice Award winner. IF you feel that this type of promotion is appropriate for your business growth and decide to partici-pate, you are engaging with many types of pro-motions including the celebratory gala where you can network with other potential clients to your business and will receive a trophy on stage with media coverage, also you will have your business featured on Top Choice Maga-zine, and receive the survey results as tools to understand your market position which can be compared to your competition, resulting in a clearer view of your target. Results are simple: reinforcing your image on actual clients and impressing future potential customers.
After a long endeavour to contact all the winners, responses start to gather. Some decide to participate in the event promotion, others participate by promoting their award winning status in their own marketing strategies and many wait for the result of others to see if it re-ally works for them. It is the weeks leading up to the event that become slightly chaotic. With the process of contacting all the winners, we are also planning the gala, as well as putting together the next issue of Top Choice Maga-zine. Since winners are given such a lenient re-sponse date, following the participation form deadline we are on a tighter schedule to gather all magazine content as to have sufficient time to create an ad and receive approval.
Up until this point, much of the planning for the event was to a minimum. The date has been chosen, the venue is booked and the
As another year comes to an end, also comes the time for the annual Multi-cultural Top Choice Awards Gala. For
the past three years, diverse winners gather to-gether for an extravagant event hosted by Top Choice Media Group. On that evening, busi-nesses and professionals from various ethnic communities of the GTA gather to be recog-nized and rewarded for their contributions of immigrants to the Canadian economy.
As soon as the doors open it’s show time! Months of planning and preparation are final-ly out of our hands and in the hands of fate. It hasn’t been an easy process collecting everyone together, but here, you will get a glimpse of what it took to plan the 4th Multicultural Top Choice Awards.
It’s a simple enough process, during a three month period the ballots are open. People cast their votes to various business or profession-als. Voting is limited to 5 votes per person per survey via I.P. identifications. During this time, nominees are contacted and encouraged to spread the word about the survey. At the end of that process, votes are tallied and winners are generated from various categories selected; and so it begins.
Thousands of votes were cast, hundreds of nominations were entered and you can definitely say there were quite a few categories chosen. For people who are unfamiliar to Top Choice Awards, they may not understand the concept in which the award is based on. Our goal is to create understanding and resonate national harmony by promoting the positive aspects and impacts of multiculturalism in Canada as well as promote Canada as a key destination to create and sustain businesses across all sectors of industry, despite race, co-lour, religion and cultural background.
Many people may not understand our pur-pose and believe that they are “purchasing” an

ExpoSystems Canada is an award-winning manufacturer of quality exhibits and displays and has been
serving the tradeshow & display industry since 1965.
As the largest Canadian manufacturer of modular display system solutions, the company has a 45,000 square foot production facility that houses an assembly plant, wood shop with CNC capabilities and a metalworking shop. Their facility also has a spectacular 3000 sq ft showroom where the visitors can see a wide range of modular display solutions. The Company also offers display storage and rental options. With Exposystems, the client can have it all – as much or little as they require.
The majority of ExpoSystems products are made in Canada, which means quicker turnaround and often a more cost effective solution. All products that are produced by ExpoSystems Canada are backed by their “ExpoSystems Lifetime Warranty”, which protects the customer against any material failure or workmanship on all hardware products (graphics cannot be warranted).
They will repair or replace your product at no charge. The Company is dedicated to providing first class products with no compromises whatsoever on quality. ExpoSystems Canada is a multiple winner of the prestigious Top Choice award as an industry leader for the past several years. ExpoSystems Canada strives to be the best that they can be and they are constantly looking for ways to improve the service & products that they have to offer you.
Ecological choicEs.ExpoSystems Canada believes in being socially responsible. Five years ago they implemented an ecological program. Modular systems have always been an ecologically responsible choice over the long term. They
are most definitely a ‘green’ solution in that they can be re-used over and over again, typically with a lifespan of approximately 5 years. This greatly reduces the need to attack & abuse the Earths natural resources.
The goal that they set out to achieve was to maximize the use of post-consumer recycled material in the manufacture of their displays. A vast majority of the materials used in the production of their range of products are ‘eco-friendly’ with the use of post-consumer recycled materials: From their proprietary ExpoProfile range which is made from 80% post-consumer recycled aluminium, to their eco-fi fabric that is 100% produced from recycled plastic drinks bottles. For every 10 ft pop up portable display that is produced with their fabrics, they reduce the number of plastic bottles that go to landfill by 80 bottles.
A honeycomb core is used in the production of their Edge Panel System, which is manufactured from post-consumer recycled cardboard and the aluminum used in the frames of these panels also includes post consumer material.
ExpoSystems Canada also offers a unique recycling program. Once the client has finished with their display, ExpoSystems will arrange for the unit to be broken down disposed of in an environmentally friendly way and put it back into the recycling chain. The main benefit is helping clients reduce their carbon footprint.
ExpoSystems Canada is passionate about and committed to ensuring they try to improve not only our environment but the environment of our children as well.

SURVEYING
What’s the Deal? EnterVote.com & Top Choice Awards
Top Choice Award winners are decided by surveys on EnterVote.com, but do you know how it works?David Silvestre
People’s choice. That’s always been the goal at Top Choice Awards and in order to poll the people you need an effective
method of surveying. When we began Top Choice Awards 5 years ago, we conducted the survey ourselves, using our own website and staff. But as things grew, so did the need for a dedicated surveying platform, which you know today as EnterVote.com.
Hosting surveys is only the beginning for EnterVote.com. EnterVote.com also receives and processes thousands of written forms and data collected by telephone and EnterVote.com street survey teams. Once a survey is complet-ed the data (from all sources) is tabulated and the results are released and sent to Top Choice Awards for the purpose of awarding the win-ners. Once Top Choice Awards receives the results it is there job to identify if the business is legitimate (eg still in business) and collect the contact information for communication purposes.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A VOTE AND A RATING
Recently a new type of award – the Top Rated Award – has been created by Top Choice Awards and the EnterVote.com survey reflect that. When completing a survey respondents have the opportunity to enter their personal opinion of the business or professional’s levels of quality, service, value and professionalism. What’s the difference between a vote and rat-ing? Although valuable, a vote can be cast by a person who has never used the product or

service, solely based on the popularity of the business or professional; this is why it is often referred to as the popular vote. A rating on the other hand can only be accurately made by re-spondents who have some experience with the business or professional.
AWARDS WITHOUT BOUNDARIES
With the advances of the internet we are able to conduct EnterVote.com surveys all over the world! Which means the reach of the Top Choice Award & Top Rated Award is unlimited.
WHAT’S THE POINT
Our mission is to provide the most popular and top rated businesses to consumers around the world and to recognize groups and indi-viduals who have inspired or motivated others to be the best that they can.
What consumers gain is the knowledge that an award given through EnterVote.com and Top Choice Awards comes with the trust of thousands of respondents. They can save themselves time and money that could other-wise be lost when using another product or service.
Businesses and professionals gain the awareness that their products and services are appreciated by their clients and through the award they develop a stronger relationship
with them. The marketing uses of the award result in increased business, as new clients are willing to try them because they know that they are a reputed business or professional.
GET INVOLVED
If you want to get involved simply visit EnterVote.com -or- if you are looking for a winner visit TopChoiceAwards.com. Tools for businesses are also available online, just look for the “Get Rated” ribbon and the download-able “Get Rated” form.

David Costa’s devotion to advance the community’s best interests in court has made him a repeat winner as our fa-vourite lawyer.
His humble father Avelino, from mainland Portugal, in-stilled a strong work ethic. David’s mother Armelina, from the Azorean island of Teixeira, introduced social awareness and practical sensibility.
With degrees in music and education from the University of Toronto, and further accolades from the Royal Conser-

This led to his interest in law, resulting with David acquiring law degrees from BOTH countries!
David has developed a full-service law practice in the heart of our Portuguese community, on Toronto’s main Bloor Street West artery. His team of skilled and experienced lawyers and staff address all legal areas ranging from corporate and immigration to estates, per-sonal injury and family.
David focuses his personal energy on defending the wrongly ac-cused and those otherwise struggling through the criminal justice system. His insight in helping those overcome tragic inner and so-cial conflict remain a key reason people in crisis choose David to defend their causes, great and small.

Auto. Collision. As much as we try we cannot seem to
keep these two out of our lives. The worst part of an auto col-lision is not the accident itself, but the headaches we get when dealing with the outcome. It’s not just about body repair! It’s also paint, frame straightening and the nightmare of filing your insur-ance claim. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a shop that could take care of all that for you? Joe Gomes thought it would be a good idea and that’s why he es-tablished Jay’s Auto Collision, which has been taking the hassle out of auto collision since 1995.
Over the years, Joe and his team have been providing full-service auto collision recovery with the honesty and respect you would come to expect from a Portu-guese founded business. The Portuguese community is only a part of their diverse, multi-cultural clientele. “The sup-port of the [Portuguese] com-munity has been an important part of our success” says Joe modestly. Joe’s appreciation for his community has been mutual as Jay’s Auto Collision has been rewarded with the Top Choice Award for 3 consecu-tive years – 2006, 2007 & 2008.

Canada’s #1 Choice in Child CareCanada’s #1 Choice in Child Care & Elder CareElite Care Canada was voted once again the Top Nanny Service in 2009. We are very proud to have of-fered once more an exceptional ser-vice to our clients and want to thank everyone for their support which helped Elite Care Canada develop the highest reputation in the industry.
We understand that every family is unique and different and so are our nannies. That is why Elite Care Canada is the only nanny agency recruiting care-givers from more than 80 countries all over the world to meet special needs and requirements of Canadian families. We offer caregivers and nannies with an extensive background of childcare or eldercare experience, outstanding skills and qualifications from different coun-tries. Elite Care Canada customizes caregivers by three diverse programs in order to find the perfect match for every family, always keeping the chil-dren’s and seniors’ well being at heart.
Remarkable changes happened since last year when Elite Care Canada was already voted Top Nanny Service. Those changes not only affected Elite Care Canada, but the Live-in Caregiver Pro-gram itself. Newspaper articles and reporters were investigating nanny agencies that abuse nannies and ask-ing for horrendous fees to come to
Canada. Elite Care Canada kept its strong reputation throughout the whole time and even reacted with positive changes such as a growing team of staff members, all putting their heart into their work, and make the process of hiring a Live-in Caregiver as easy as possible. Staff members of Elite Care Canada inform Canadian employers constantly about changes to make the process as transparent as possible.
Another way of showing how confident Elite Care Canada feels about its ser-vice in those difficult times was the introduction of an extended replace-ment guarantee for every family for up to two years. Should issues occur with the family and the nanny, the agency is always there to help right away and finding a new nanny if needed. Also, some caregivers like to experience Canada for one year only and instead of going through the full process of finding a suitable caregiver and agen-cy again, families working with Elite Care Canada can go the easy way and just call their placement consultant.
Elite Care Canada also joined the big-gest reward program in Canada: the Air Miles Reward Program. The AIR MILES Reward Program is an iconic brand in Canada. In fact, 97% of Ca-nadians know it well. The brand en-
joys the highest activity rates of any mass loyalty program, with approxi-mately two-thirds of all Canadians ac-tively collecting reward miles. We are proud to say that families collecting Air Miles can make the hiring process of a caregiver count double, not only will the family hire the best caregiver in the market, but they will also be able to collect Air Miles in addition.
Elite Care Canada is dedicated to its clients offering an unique service to make sure all needs and requirements are met. Highly standardized interview processes help the agency find profes-sionals all over the world who want to experience Canada and become part of a new family. Goals are set high for the coming year to make sure to ex-tend Elite Care Canada’s reputation.

Marbles of Portugal was founded in 1987 by Amilcar “Mico” Jacinto, a Portuguese craftsman. He was the first in the city to import a complete line of exclusively Portuguese marble and granite. The standing of Portuguese stones, namely marbles, in the international market was, and still is, very high. Amilcar knew this and wanted to offer these high valued stones to a North American market. Since then, Marbles of Portugal have continued to import fine marbles, granites and, most recently, limestones for both industry and consumer use. Marbles of Portugal have expanded their import to include various granites from Brazil, India and Italy to meet the demand of a growing industry.
Marbles of Portugal is still servicing its valued clients in Canada and the United States. Our 12,000 square foot facility includes a showroom, warehouse and a workshop dedicated to customizing your special needs. Our workshop is capable of manufacturing décor concepts for the commercial, residential and construction industries.

INJURY LAW IS ALL WE DO!Navdeep Singh“I was in a serious car accident and I had legal disputes with my own insurance company who cut off my benefits, as well as the insurance company for the at–fault driver. Hi there, it’s me again, Dyvine Silvestre, I guess most of you already know me, but if you don’t I am an amateur writer and I’m turning 12 in November. During the past summer I went on a vacation outside of Canada for two weeks and I had a great time, but after a while I started to feel like I was missing something. I only realized what it was when I came back to Canada, it was Multiculturalism and my good friends teaching me more about their country.
My best friend Janique is from Trinidad, we teach each other about our cultures (my back-ground is Portuguese) and we always end up saying the same thing: “I am glad to be ‘able’ to be your friend. Thank you Canada!”. Canada has brought together so many nations and makes them feel like they are all equal and at home!
Other countries are suffering over hunger, thirst, war and slavery, so when people immigrate to Canada they appreciate the country and slowly the people who live in it. Last night I watched a movie the movie was about “racism”, in that movie I wondered how other parts of the our world kill people because they are White, Black, Brown, Mulatto... don’t we all have the same heart, the same mind, the same soul? WE ARE ALL THE SAME! Right??!!
Multiculturalism is a way of uniting dif-ferent cultures and treating each other
equally. We all identify ourselves in one way or another, some like singing, some dancing, some writing (me), or soccer (my brother); we all identify our countries by singing the national anthem and speaking the language. But in Canada we bring all communities and combine them all in one “mind set” of being around other cultures. A mind set is the way our mind thinks,
sees and does things. Around the world differ-ent people have differ-ent mind sets and tend to do things differently. For example if they see a person from a different country they may judge
them by the way they look, but here in Canada we want to learn more about the other culture. Isn’t that how every country should be?
My dad always tells me “invest in yourself and it will pay you forever”, meaning to learn and explore and find out what you can do, and do it! I follow that idea and try to explore as much as I can with all cul-tures in my Toronto, my Canada!
Peace and love to all!!! Dyvine Silvestre
