PATENTS REPORTED ARE UTILITY PATENTS GRANTED DURING CALENDAR YEAR 2005 THAT LISTED THE ORGANIZATION, OR IN SOME CASES A SUBSIDIARY, AS THE OWNER ON THE PRINTED PATENT DOCUMENT. If an assignment of rights to an organization or its subsidiary was recorded after the patent document was printed, the patent was not counted as granted to the organization. Patents that listed the name of a majority-owned subsidiary on the patent document were counted if the organization asked IPO to count patents of subsidiaries. Patents that were granted to two or more organizations jointly were attributed to the organization listed first on the patent document. 2. The number of patents granted by the PTO dropped to 143,806 in 2005 from 164,291 in 2004. The number of patents granted to the average organization was lower in 2005 than in 2004. 3.
