Solar at Oakland Oakland International has added more

solar panels to its system as part of the company’s aim to make savings in its energy and CO2 emissions. The company has added 208 photovoltaic solar panels to its existing 800 panels. Oakland’s total system size is now 250Kva with solar power saving the firm an extra 20,000kg of CO2 annually at its Redditch depot. Oakland International managing director Dean Attwell, said: “Oakland’s final instalment of 50Kva completed the 250kva system and will deliver an extra £5,072 of savings annually, meaning Oakland International will now have the potential to make renewable energy savings of over £30k which is slightly above the manufacturer’s predictions.”

Co-op goes for convenienceThe troubled Co-operative Group is to roll out 32 more convenience stores this year.

The move means that it will be competing against all the major supermarket chains, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda and Waitrose, which have all said they are prioritising plans to boost their number of small, local convenience stores.“In 2013 we opened 32 stores and a further 32 contracts were exchanged for stores that will open in 2014. A large number of these are situated in and around London, where we have traditionally been under-represented,” said the Co-operative group in its latest financial report. The Co-op said that its food business improved supply chain processes and reduced stock levels, improving cash flow and enabling the stores to run more smoothly. This was achieved through better ordering disciplines and improved relationships with suppliers, according to the report.

“March 2013 saw the completion of the logistics service network, which will help drive product availability through the supply chain and into stores,” said the report.

New owner backs NFT with £42m NFT Distribution is poised for growth in the UK and in new overseas markets following a surprise move by private

equity investor EmergeVest to acquire a controlling stake. EmergeVest has bought the entire shareholding of NFT’s original private equity backer, Phoenix Equity Partners. Additionally, Investec Growth & Acquisition Finance is injecting additional capital to further grow the business. The deal values the company at over £60m. The transaction includes integrated debt funding of up to £42m provided by Investec.

The current management team at NFT will remain with the business and maintain a significant shareholding in the company. NFT chief executive David Frankish said: “We have been diligent in our search for a new investment partner and are really pleased to be working with EmergeVest who have exhibited a great understanding of our market and a passion to help NFT fulfil its potential.”

Frankish sees opportunity for growth in the UK and in international markets such as Northern Europe and China. Heath Zarin, managing director of EmergeVest, said: “We believe the company is well positioned to expand its service offering within the UK and to enter new overseas markets.”

And Paul Rablen of Investec said: “We look forward to providing ongoing funding to underpin the next chapter of NFT’s growth under EmergeVest’s ownership.”

Since the management buy-out from Northern Foods in 2006, the business has seen sales increase 49%, from £114m to £170m in the latest year to March 2014. The company runs seven sites and employs 2,000 full-time staff.

Overcooling, poorly operated equipment and gas leaks cost the temperature-controlled road transport and logistics market millions in wasted energy each year. Shaun Evers, managing director of Stonegate Instruments, outlines how low cost technologies can help to maximise energy efficiency.

The UK’s £12 billion food and drink logistics industry is a vital link in the food chain that is

under incredible pressure from rising fuel prices and increasing government targets to reduce greenhouse gases. Against this background it makes more sense than ever to ensure that refrigeration systems are not leaking money and are working to maximum efficiency. Getting temperature controls right carries substantial rewards. A study by the Food Refrigeration and Process Engineering Research Centre found that significant energy savings of at least 30% can be achieved by implementing low cost technologies that address the four key areas where energy is wasted – running equipment at the incorrect temperature, leaving doors open, through raised moisture levels and gas leaks. Overcooling by just 1˚C can lead to a significant increase in energy consumption of up to 3%, with temperature differences of 5˚C proven to increase electricity consumption by 10-20%. Temperature displays will help to maintain the optimum level of temperature and are cost effective

and easy to install. Stonegate’s compact digital thermometer, designed to be used with a thermistor probe over a range of plus or minus 50˚C, provides a constant temperature display that can be wall mounted or hand-held. Audio and visual alarms warn staff of variants. Open doors waste energy and lead to moisture control problems. To address these issues, Stonegate Instruments has developed its door open alarm system and a cold room logger, which stores data at regular intervals for access by USB computer connection to ensure that systems are working to maximum efficiency. Moisture content is checked using a transducer trip module. Gas leaks are similarly hazardous both to a company’s bottom line and to the environment. Leaks mean that equipment has to work harder and so consumes more energy. According to the Institute of Refrigeration, working with the Carbon Trust, leaks of up to 30% of the charge during a year are not uncommon in commercial and industrial refrigeration and dealing with them could save the industry £40m per annum.

Alarmingly, the report also finds that a leak of just 1kg of refrigerant gases causes approximately the same environmental damage as driving a van 10,000 miles. The solution is quite simple – gas detection systems are a vital piece of equipment that give peace of mind. Stonegate’s gas detection system can identify a wide range of refrigerant gases, including CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs and CO2. Monitoring up to twenty-four sensors, LED colours indicate the presence and status of each sensor and any sensed gas leak sets an audio and visual alarm to alert staff members quickly so that the problem can be quickly rectified. At a time of intense financial pressure, companies can help to maintain profits by maximising the efficiency of their refrigeration systems. A few simple, low cost technologies could make all the difference. Shaun Evers is managing director of Stonegate Instruments. www.stonegate-instruments.co.uk.

The star performer among the top players in this year’s ranking of UK temperature-controlled logistics providers is NFT. Its revenues have risen consistently over the past three years. In 2013 revenue was up by 11% on the previous year. Last month (April) NFT completed a deal with private equity investor EmergeVest and at the same time secured an enhanced debt-funding package from Investec. NFT’s chief executive David Frankish, told Cold Chain News, “Looking ahead, this ongoing funding will underpin the next chapter of our growth under EmergeVest’s ownership and from a day-to-day management and operational perspective; it is very much a case of business as usual where our customers will as always be the centre of attention.

“These enterprising plans will be driven by expanding our offering within the UK and entering new overseas markets. We will further enhance our specialist expertise, market access and systems to ensure customers benefit from continuous improvement through innovation,” he says.

Another strong performer is Fowler Welch although its 3% growth in 2013 is slightly down on its previous performance. Fowler Welch’s managing director, Nick Hay, says: “In 2013 we continued to invest our profits back into the business for the benefit of our customers. Our strategy of listening, responding and delivering to our customers’ requirements continues to reap rewards.

“Existing and new customers have rewarded us with significant business wins at the start of 2014. We are delighted that our joint venture, ISS based at our Teynham site, will provide a further range of vertically integrated services to the produce sector: ripening, processing and packing a variety of fruit and vegetable products. Moreover, we are delighted to be ahead of our environmental targets, surpassing emissions reduction targets and reducing energy usage.

“We will continue to develop our strategic network, having consolidated our European and container services into existing UK locations,” Hay says.

But the gold star for growth goes to N R Evans & Son, reporting a 32% increase in its 2013 revenue. N R Evans’ managing director, Neil Evans, who is the founder of the business, attributes the success of the company to “working closely with customers, understanding customers businesses and requirements, offering industry-leading service levels, using high specification equipment, employing skilled professional staff, and the ability and willingness to continually adapt the business to meet customers’ requirements and expectations.”

Nagel Langdons reports good performance in 2013 with 15% growth in revenue to £85m, maintaining its consistent growth record. Nagel Langdons managing director, Arran Osman says: “We are reasonably pleased with our progress during 2013, which continued to meet with our objectives and strategic plans for the year.

“Our investment projects have successfully complemented our business model and justify our short to midterm plans for further improvements to our network, with more significant, multi-use capacity coming on line.”

But he sounds a warning note: “Given the extent of our investments and a continuation of challenging market conditions we are expecting a demanding year ahead.”

Despite the star performances, 2013 has been a tough year for most businesses. Dave Cranny, managing director, S D M European Transport, describes 2013 as a “difficult year with further pressure in providing a competitive edge.”

What the top bosses sayCastlecool, Paul Shortt, chief executive“The company is looking at a number of new service and product developments in the temperature-controlled supply chain environment in 2014. Castlecool have again been awarded the Gold Standard by Deloitte for the fifth year in succession, for being one of the Best Managed Companies in Ireland.”

Clan International Transport Services, John Clark, managing director“2013 was another challenging year with continued pressure on haulage rates and increasing activity again by clandestines at the channel ports. When will the UK and French authorities do something (or anything!) to protect our drivers and equipment? However, there is now a genuine air of optimism everywhere, which bodes well for the industry during 2014/15.”

Chiltern Cold Storage Group, Paul Jackson, managing director“An exciting highlight for Chiltern was being awarded Coldstore Operator of the Year 2013. This combined with securing a 3-year chilled storage contract from a major UK food manufacturer, has allowed Chiltern to expand into the area of fast moving chilled goods. These factors will contribute to Chiltern’s growth in 2014/15 with a projected turnover of £15m. We have something extra which has led to our success and set us apart from our competitors; it’s a fierce sense of pride in a job well done. Going forward the Chiltern team’s strategy in 2014/15 will be to focus on its goal of becoming a global logistics provider.”

Culina, John Clark, Thomas van Mourik, chief executive“During 2014 Culina is proud to be celebrating its 20th year in business. Through steady and stable growth we have become the leading provider of high quality logistics services for food and drink companies in the UK and Ireland. Our success has been built on providing efficient, sustainable logistics and a highly reliable service as a ‘one stop shop’ for many of Europe’s leading brands of today. To underpin this we continued to invest in our business during 2013 – opening a world-class consolidation centre in Bristol, maximising the benefits of technology upgrades within our chilled operations, as well as further strengthening the integration of our ambient network and Culina IPS packaging operation. This year will see significant investment in fleet efficiency, and a focus on harnessing the power of IT to work even ‘smarter’ – pushing the boundaries of flexibility while maintaining our super-fast delivery turnaround times to more than 6,000 delivery points every day.

Grocontinental, Hugh Jones, commercial director“We have maintained a strong financial performance and sustained growth. Turnover increased from £28.4m in 2011/12 to £30m for the financial year 2012/13. As our business expands, we are anticipating good growth over the next year. We continue with an ambitious investment programme and during 2014 we will be renewing our entire fleet of vehicles, constructing a new 22,000 pallet capacity warehouse and investing in IT infrastructure. We are also strengthening our management team, bringing in a range of expertise to support customer demands and growth.”

McCulla (Ireland), Ashley McCulla, managing director“McCulla have invested heavily for 2014 and have opened a new cold storage facility in Dublin which has doubled our storage capacity in Ireland. In addition we have added 25 new Mercedes Actros units to our fleet, both these actions will grow our turnover to 17.5m this year.”

Matthews International Transport, Trevor Matthews, managing director“2013 saw a good growth in the business and a strong second part of the year. 2014 started with the launch of part load temperature-controlled service to France, Spain, Italy, Holland, Belgium and Germany, from a new office and depot in Folkestone.

Notes and exclusionsThe tables list where possible turnover from UK and Irish logistics companies where temperature-controlled transport and

distribution services make up an identifiable and substantial portion of turnover. However, in the case of Gist, Norbert Dentressangle and Turners, we cannot isolate specific UK temperature-controlled business. Companies excluded from the list because we are unable to identify their temperature-controlled activity or because of lack of data are: ACS&T Logistics, B W Refrigerated Couriers, Direct Deliveries Transport, Edward Gilder & Co, Gregory Distribution, J B Wheaton & Sons, Lowe (Paddock Wood), Wincanton, DHL, Robert Summers Transport, Samworth Brothers.

Note A: Gist - The figures for Gist include its UK and Europe operation. Gist has 53 sites in the UK and 14 other European countries providing 200,000sq m of temperature-controlled warehousing space. It operates 3,400 vehicles in the UK and Europe.

Note B: Norbert Dentressangle - The figures for Norbert Dentressangle show its UK depots but turnover is for its European temperature-controlled business. Norbert Dentressangle, one of the top five UK transport operators, does not publish results for its operations in the UK. Total revenue from Norbert Dentressangle’s temperature-controlled logistics business in 2013 was €492 million (£405m) . In total, the company operates 3.9 million cubic metres of temperature-controlled storage and 940 trailers. In the UK, Norbert Dentressangle has 27 temperature-controlled sites with a total storage capacity of 300,000 pallets and a fleet of 150 vehicles.

Note C: Turners - The turnover for Turners includes its non-temperature controlled business. In the autumn of 2012 Turners acquired Browns Chilled Distribution. This £35m turnover operation was owned by Simon and Andrew Brown and includes the former David Andrew Transport business. It is based on a 27-acre site at Bicker near Spalding. Browns operates 120 vehicles, delivering to supermarkets, food processors and wholesale markets. The business expands Turners’ presence in the Spalding area where it already has a refrigerated transport depot at Quadring and the former Fruitex wholesale market operation at Donington. The storage and cross-docking facilities at Browns is enabling Turners to grow its position nationally in the refrigerated transport sector.

ExclusionsDavid Price Food Services - David Price Food Services called in administrators in the autumn of 2013. The administrators sold the

company’s cold storage division, with sites in Wallsend, North Tyneside, and Glasgow, to Yorkshire-based Ice Co. The chilled and frozen haulage division of the business stopped trading with immediate effect. David Price Food Services, which ran 43 tractors and 54 trailers, was ranked number 13 in Cold Chain News’ Top 25 temperature-controlled logistics providers in 2012 but, with turnover at £13m, slid two places to 15 in the 2013 ranking.

Eddie Stobart - Eddie Stobart pulled out of short shelf-life chilled distribution in early 2013 blaming lack of volume in the “challenging” chilled sector.

ACS&T - Associated Cold Stores & Transport (ACS&T) has 12 temperature-controlled warehouses for frozen, chilled or ambient raw materials and finished products for final distribution. It is a subsidiary of Camellia, turnover £251m in 2013. Camellia is listed on the London Stock Exchange and includes businesses in agriculture, financial services, engineering, and food storage and distribution. The latter consists of Netherlands-based Affish and Wylax International, and UK-based ASC&T.

Bespoke building from NormandyChereau, the Normandy-based trailer builder returned to the CV Show, the first time since

2001, marking its return to the UK market. “We are a bespoke trailer builder,”says Christophe Danton, marketing and communication manager, Chereau. “Last year we built 2,700 trailers of which 1,080 were to unique customer designs,” he says.

Chereau is promoting its multi-deck, multi-temperature design with two already sold to UK operators. Unlike many UK double decks, the trailer meets the European 4-metre trailer height limit. The system allows for Euro pallets, UK pallets, pharmaceutical pallets, half pallets, and roll cages. Up to three levels are possible with the upper floors created using beams permanently fitted but able to be moved to suit specific loads. The beams also double as load restraint devices. When not in use the beams are stowed in the trailer roof space. The aluminium beams, which have a one tonne load capacity, lock into place with a quarter turn. The side rails that hold the beams have a 2-tonne load for a three euro-pallets rank. A moveable internal partition creates separate compartments for multi-temperature use. The 13.6-metre trailer on display, pictured here, is built for a UK rental customer and is to a standard specification.

Paneltex has built several of these 3.5 tonne home delivery bodies on Mercedes-Benz Sprinter medium wheelbase chassis for Morrison’s new home delivery fleet. The Paneltex 3650mm refrigerated box body, designed for the intensive, multi-drop, home delivery market, has double rear doors, hinged for 270° opening, and a single side door to each side, which will open through 180°. The body has lightweight GRP-moulded side skirts and top fairing, front-hinged to access the fridge. The payload is 1.25 tonnes.

A pair of lightweight, insulated doors is fitted within the body to separate the ambient area from the chilled area, with refrigeration provided by a GAH Arrow AM20 super lightweight fridge. Aerodynamic drag is reduced by curving the front roof section and lowering the insulated roof below the level of the fridge. The body includes LCD temperature display, Azura AVG660 tracker system and SmartDrive camera system.

This twin deck trailer by Gray & Adams is also available as an 8.3-metre urban artic with 26-pallet capacity. This trailer, built for the Co-Op takes up to 44 pallets, 70% more carrying capacity than a single deck. Running costs are 27% less than for a single deck, says Gray & Adams. The trailer is split longitudinally to take pallets and roll cages with independent temperature control of each deck. The lifting system is waterproof and weather proof and has interior controls to minimise risk of damage.

Carlsen Baltic is a new entrant to the UK temperature-controlled transport market. The company is promoting its Multilite, a 3.5-tonne multi-compartment, multi-temperature body that uses a low-carbon, eutectic refrigeration system. The multi-temperature body with eutectic plates has three temperature zones: -36°C, +5°C and +12°C. The temperatures can be adjusted according to the operator’s specific needs and the eutectic system will keep constant temperatures in the van.

The Carlsen Baltic vehicle on the stand, and pictured here, is one of two for UK operation by Convini Food, part of Swedish company, Mat på Jobbet. Operating from Bermondsey, Convini delivers ready-made meals to offices in the London inner city area making around ten drops a day.

The body is mounted on a Volkswagen T5 chassis with Freno frame and has Carlsen’s eutectic cooling system. The refrigerated body, which weighs 820kg to almost a tonne payload, consists of four deep-freeze compartments to -35ºC with two shelves in each; four chilled compartments to +5ºC with two shelves in each; two chilled compartments at +12ºC with three shelves in each; and two dry compartments. Carlsen Baltic is one of Europe’s biggest producers of lightweight refrigerated bodies, including light and heavy vans up to 6-tonnes, for frozen food deliveries using low-carbon, eutectic refrigeration systems.

“This solution is used by many of Europe’s leading home and office food delivery companies such as Eisman, Bofrost and Mat på Jobbet, with over 5,000 vehicles in operation,” says Linas Starkevicius, managing director, Carlsen Baltic. Frigoblock’s new alternator gives up to

37.5kVA to power its electric fridges. The alternator is water cooled and so more compact. Factory fitted, the alternator shown here on a Daimler OM470 diesel engine, is connected via the Can bus and has hybrid inverter controls. “For the first time, regenerative use of all brake and propulsion operating periods with maximum refrigeration capacity: 75% less fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, can be achieved,” says Frigoblock. The company has used electric drives as standard for over 30 years. The engine-mounted alternator drive system requires up to 50% less fuel to produce substantially higher cooling and heating capacities than conventional diesel-powered transport refrigeration systems, Frigoblock says. The systems allow for weight savings up to 400kg compared to conventional diesel powered fridges.

Trailer fridge technology Carrier Transicold UK used the show to promote its new Vector 1350

trailer unit. The lightweight Vector maximises payload potential and reliability while minimising fuel consumption and system downtime, the key ingredients for long-distance trucking, Carrier says. This is the first time the Vector 1350 unit has been on display at an exhibition in the UK, following its launch in Berlin in November 2013.

“The Vector 1350 unit further strengthens an already comprehensive range of temperature-controlled trailer systems,” said Justin Grace, managing director Northern Europe, Carrier Transicold. “The CV Show provided the perfect opportunity to showcase this new technology to UK and Irish fleets at the biggest industry gathering of its type.”

The Vector 1350 unit replaces Carrier Transicold’s previous-generation Maxima range. Powered by a 1.1-litre engine, it reduces fuel consumption by up to 30% compared with the Maxima and carries 27% less refrigerant by using a micro-channel condenser coil.

Slipstream at 3.5 tonneSolomon has built several of these 3.5 tonne bodies for home delivery

company Adelie Foods. Based on a Sprinter chassis the body has dual-temperature compartments with a small box for frozen goods. A Thermo King D300 fridge provides cooling. The main body for chill loads has walk in steps with access through a rear door. The asymmetrical rear double doors are hinged to the near-side and open to allow access for pallet loads. The body is to Solomon’s Slipstream design for improved aerodynamics. The fridge unit is covered with a roof deflector for better aerodynamic performance.

Coolertech’s new body for the Mercedes Sprinter chassis cab has a narrower, streamlined body which follows the lines and width of the vehicle’s cab. The AiroSprint Box Body range is aimed at home shopping operations where deliveries may take drivers through more restricted, tighter areas, with little margin for error. The slimmer body helps limit body accident damage, says Coolertech.

For operators the body offers an increase in capacity – both physical space and payload – over a standard van. A lightweight body styling kit has also been designed to complement the shape, colour and form of the cab’s bumper section and door detail trim. The kit has formed wheel-arches that have no significant weight increase to the vehicle which has a tonne payload.

Coolertech and Mercedes-Benz dealer Rossetts Commercials shared a stand that also had a fridge-bodied version of the low-emission Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid. The factory-built 7.5-tonne Canter is the world’s first hybrid truck to make economic as well as environmental sense, says Perry Reeves, dealer principal, Rossetts.

The Canter has a 150hp diesel engine working in parallel with a slimline, 54hp electric motor, and offers fuel savings and correspondingly low CO2 emissions. Despite the extra weight of the hybrid equipment, it retains its body and payload allowance of 3.7-tonnes.
