an unprecedented speed and keeping bringing surprises

beings, are all the purposes of Global SSL Showcase TOP 100.

ISA is an international alliance of regional

alliances and associations, renowned

universities and institutions and leading companies

in the SSL field. It is an independent legal entity

which aims to enhance public-private partnership

and intensify global cooperation to accelerate and

foster the sustainable development of SSL.

After years of exciting breakthroughs and developments as well as many challenges, global SSL industry has come to a crucial crossroad where how to shape the way forward on its sustainable

development. At this very moment, it is urgently necessary to present the world the best showcases of SSL industry including the best design, reliable products and high quality installation to expand influence, establish positive images, and raise public awareness. Thus, in the ISA 2012 working meeting it was decided to make the Global SSL TOP100, to show the world the best practice and best available technology of this industry and encourage more.

T o promote the sustainable development of Global Solid State lighting (SSL) industry, demonstrate the R&D achievements, the application of technology innovation, as well as the comprehensive

results of best design, reliable products and best installation, to increase the influence and visibility of SSL products and public awareness.

Any organization in the SSL industry can apply.

T he year 2012 is the first year of Global SSL Showcase Top100. Although both the organizers and applicants are under tight schedule, this important and meaningful event has been successfully

carried out thanks to the great contribution and dedication of a group of high ranking and renowned jury panel experts, as well as the applicants and the staff of ISA Secretariat.

We have received a total of 16 entries from all over the world, most of which are excellent and extraordinary SSL Showcases which have been or will have significant impacts on the SSL industry worldwide. After objective and thorough evaluation, based on the results from jury panel experts, there are 10 projects has won the Global SSL Showcase TOP 100 in 2012(In the order of score):

Significance and challenges

Each year the over 209,000 streetlights and more than 400 distinct fixture styles consume about 197,000,000Kwh of electricity.

As LED technology changes every six months, one challenge for the Bureau has been to adopt design standards for new LED street lighting projects. The Bureau constantly tests and evaluates new fixtures that will provide the illumination requirements while increasing efficiency and reducing overall production costs.

As of August 2012, the Bureau of Street Lighting has used city labor to install over 100,000 LED streetlights on residential and major streets. A remote monitoring system that collects and reports real-time performance data is being deployed.

Major features and high-lightsPhilips announces breakthrough initiative to provide solar powered LED lighting for 100 small soccer pitches or “light centre’s” for rural communities across Africa

In August 2012, at the conclusion of Philips’ third pan-African Cairo to Cape Town road show, Philips announced a new initiative, which will see the installation of 100 solar powered LED “light centres” across rural Africa by 2015.

The light centre’s, will be focused on schools which are closely linked to villages and towns in off-grid or semi-grid areas.

The light centre’s will provide communal areas which can be used for sport, education, healthcare, commerce and social needs. The intention is to extend the day be enabling communal life after the sun sets and creating safer areas.

Philips has committed an investment of more than Euro 2 million to this project. Maintenance would be self-sustaining as local authority/owners can rent out the light or advertising space and generate an income.

Energy saving performance and environmental impactsThe overall carbon footprint is minimal and during the usage phase almost zero.

The amount of light we are now able to generate in this way is astonishing and has only just become possible due to recent breakthroughs in LED lighting – A total package of 24000lm provides up to 20 lux on a 800-1000m2 area.

Installation numbers and application performanceSo far seven light centre’s have already been installed across Africa – Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, with a commitment for 100 more.

New Philips LED luminaires provide 6000lm packages at 5700K and consume 57W.

4 luminaires are used to light up an area of up to 1000m2.

Significance and challengesThe intention is to extend the day be enabling communal life after the sun sets and creating safer areas. The main challenge is place the light Centre’s in the right position as they are fixed and not movable. After discussions with local partners decided to target schools which were central to local communities and easily accessible by the community.



Green City, Green Life in Nan yang

Major features and high-lightsThe total road is about 25kilometers, which is the second largest solar road lighting project (in volume) in China. Philips designs off-grid and hybrid solar lighting system with different lux level to fulfill different application situation to meet road lighting norm in China. The hybrid solar systems (mainly powered by solar but use electricity grid as backup to ensure no blackout) are applied in the small village to ensure the safety for people.

No failure occurred for the whole project since installation.

Energy saving performance and environmental impactsAs this lighting solution does not consume any conventional energy, its carbon emissions during use are zero. Compared to conventional SON lighting (150W&70W solution), it saves 893t carbon emission totally every year.

Owner feedbacks testimonyThe field test result is so good that it fulfill all the lighting norm specs in CJJ45. And the government officers are satisfied with lighting performance and 0 failure. They also believed the Philips solar lighting systems improve the Green City image of Nanyang City.

Installation numbers and application performanceTotal installation is 982 sets solar road lighting systems. 834sets are installed in the main roads, lumen package is 7000lumen. The average lux level is 12.5lux. Uniformity is 0.6.

And in the village, it designs as bi-luminaire on the pole, one side use 7000lumen systems to light the roads, the other side use 2200lumen to light the streets for pedestrians and bicycles.


SignificancesPhilips solar LED street lighting solution provides Nanyang city a high quality, sustainable and green lighting solution to improve the Green city image for Nanyang, and also saves 893t carbon emission for the city. This is the second largest solar road lighting project in China.

ChallengesThe application situation is complicated: total 25kilometers has 3 types road configuration. And the road crossed a small village, which has motors and pedestrians and blackout is unacceptable. The installation situation for solar lighting systems also not optimistic: there are trees besides the road, and in some places, battery box can’t be buried underground.

The total solution Philips provides can entirely meet all the lighting requirements and installation feasibility.



Bring light to the night in Taole

Major features and high-lightsPhilips solar street lighting systems light the main road in the town, where didn’t have lighting in the night and electrical cable before. The lighting performance fully fulfills the road lighting norm in China, as tested results, average lux level is 16.2lux, and uniformity is 0.78. Philips solar street lighting has brought residents of Taole town more entertainment activities in the night, and more safety on the road.

The systems have great reliability performance, 0 failures until now.

Energy saving performance and environmental impactsAs this lighting solution does not consume any conventional energy, its carbon emissions during use are zero. Compared to conventional SON lighting (70W solution), it saves 601.7t carbon emission totally every year.

Owner feedbacks testimonyTaole government agreed that Philips systems not only meet all the requirement according to road lighting standard, but also provide the outstanding performance on the quality of the light and as well as the comfort that the light generates. The project greatly increased the life quality for Taole residents in the night, enrich the activities for people and ensure the safety on the road.

Installation numbers and application performanceTotally installation is 106 sets. In field measurement, Philips solar powered off-grid LED street lighting systems provide average illuminance of 16.2 lux on the road and reached the uniformity of 0.78.


SignificancesPhilips solar LED street lighting solution provides Taole town a high quality, sustainable and green lighting solution to improve quality of life in the night for Taole residents, and also saves 607.1t carbon emission for the city. This is the typical application in rural area within limited budget.

ChallengesHere is the first commercial project in China for Philips solar road lighting systems. Philips designed the systems according to Taole application requirements and climates. Because Taole’s undeveloped economic, Philips need to optimize the total systems to lower down the total cost at the same system quality.

Major features and high-lightsQingdao jiaozhou bay tunnel. It’s line stretches approximately 7120 m, including tunnel length of 6170 m (submarine period of about 3950 m), sub grade segment length of about 950 m, is the world's third long submarine highway tunnel.

All the project using LED tunnel lamp lighting, the use of lamps and lanterns number about 7000 sets, realize the lamps and lanterns of the promise dimming function.

Energy saving performance and environmental impactsThe system can make the overall energy saving effect above 50%, Lamps and lanterns USES cycle generally for 15 years. During this period, this project can reduce 50% greenhouse gases emissions, (Relative to the use of high pressure sodium lamp).

Owner feedbacks testimonySince the implementation of the project, system actual operation situation and experts test results show that the lighting system power saving efficiency significantly, illumination effect is good, fully meet the design requirement, the project adopted 80 w LED tunnel light than traditional direct energy saving lamps and lanterns of more than 35%, combined with the actual LED dimming control system, can make the overall energy saving effect above 50%.

The lamps and lanterns of corrosion resistance level is high, this project lamps and lanterns shell corrosion rate is less than 0.0003-0.003.

The lamps and lanterns have secondary distribution of light to have excessive gradient.

Significance and challengesThe water seepage problem is serious, installation and debugging for lamps and lanterns has brought a lot of adverse factors. In view of this situation, we in the lamps and lanterns of the mounting bracket design aspects improvement, for the first time realized fluctuation support combining way. And to the top of the lamps and lanterns of all support all the installation is completed, and then to the installation of lamps and lanterns, effectively avoid the tunnel water seepage to lamps and lanterns caused by foul.

Installation numbers and application performance5786 sets of LED tunnel lamps were installed in the project.

Significance and challengesThere are mainly two big problems

Owner feedbacks testimonySince the new structure is adopted, 3100 sets of LED lights for the 10th Ice and Snow World in 2009 are successfully recycled. LED luminaires are widely used after 2010. The products are recycled 100% for many times and applied in the next period. Meanwhile, standardizing the luminaire’s interface is benefit for more widely usage promotion.

In 2010, on the original basis, increase more than 3000 sets of 1.2 meter 100W RGB strip down lights, more than 600 sets of 130W RGB square down lights.

Major features and high-lightsThe tunnel are within level III,IV,V rocks, including the risks of the coal bed gas, the coal bed spontaneous combustion, the coal dust explosion and so on. If using the traditional sodium lamp, not only the energy consumption is big, but it would create the secondary disaster because of the gas inside. The LED lamps not only conserve energy, but also surpass the traditional lamps in terms of the dustproof and explosion-proof aspects.

In this project, the LED lamps’ color rendering index is above 70 in Ra and CCT of 4500k, enabling the drivers to see the obstacles on road surface clearly.

Energy saving performance and environmental impactsThis project original design requires the lamps at total power of 1010160W, replaced lamps power is 777840W, after the change, the total power is 695230W and the changes of the LED lamps’ power is 462910W. The change part energy conservation ratio is 40.49%.

It may reduce the coal in the period of lamp utilization validity to 13794.6 tons of carbon, the 36141.9 tons of carbon dioxide, 117.3 tons of sulfur dioxide and 102.1 tons of nitrogen oxygen.

Owner feedbacks testimonyThe test result indicated that, this lighting system incurs remarkable electricity saving and better illumination effect, fully meets the design needs in which the LED tunnel lamp is with energy savings above 45% in comparison with the traditional lamps.

Installation numbers and application performanceThe luminous efficiency is ≥110 lm/w with CCT of 4500K±500; CRI is ≥70; the lifetime is ≥50000h; IP65; and the power factor is ≥0.95 and power supply efficiency is ≥86%; the working voltage: AC220V±20%; output current: 350mA (DC); operating frequency: 50Hz; environmental adaptation temperature: - 30℃~+50℃.

Significance and challengesIt may realize it in just 5 minutes to complete the lamps overall replacement, moreover it allows the charged work so that it is no need to close the tunnel power source while replacing safely,

The Au-Wire-Free LED which is provided by APT is used, it largely reduce the failure of LED and guarantee the lamps with good enough lifetime and reliability.

The adaptation of SSL lighting is still going at a relatively slow pace in most parts of the world. This is due to

The RoI (Return-on-Investment) for LED lighting is unclear for many user cases.

The public does not learn enough about the successful LED application.

Diversity business models are needed to develop successful SSL projects.

The needs to further educate the public about the basic knowledge of LED, including its huge potential in energy conservation, co-benefits, CO2 emission reduction and welfare to human beings.

Thus, ISA launched and will continue calling applications for the Global SSL

Showcase Top 100 every year. In order to promote the sustainable development of

SSL industry.
