Nowadays, being healthy usually means spending hours in the confines of your local gym. Fortunately, there are other ways on how to stay in good shape, burn more calories and build muscles without the use of heavy weights or bulky exercise equipment. By simply committing yourself to a more active lifestyle, you can achieve a leaner and healthier body than you could have ever imagined.

Here are the top 10 ways to be more active.

• Go back to recreational sports. Remember how you used to play sports during college or high-

school days whether in school or just around your neighborhood? You may find yourself spending more time with recreational sports than your regular workouts in the gym. Why? That is because team sports are more enjoyable. Go back to playing sports like basketball, volleyball or tennis. This is also a great way to test your skills against others with similar interests.

• Do some yard work. You may have probably hated this a lot when you were younger. Chances are

you’re an adult now and you probably already have your own yard. Keep up with the yard work. Cut grass, plant flowers or trees, build a rock bed or rake the leaves. All those lifting and digging will surely keep your body in its calorie-burning mode.

• Wear a pedometer. A pedometer keeps track of the number of steps you take in a day. But how many steps per day is enough? To be considered as an “active” individual, you have to achieve at least 10,000 steps per day. Make walking as part of your daily physical routine. Start wearing a pedometer and get moving. Seeing your numbers can greatly motivate you to get up and move more.

• Make home renovations. There’s always something to fix. Making home renovations can be quite a workout depending on the task. So consider taking time to look around the house for something to fix and quickly put your body to work. Not only you will burn more calories but you will also end up with a better-looking house.

• Get a dog. Dogs are great company and they are naturally active. Take your dog for a walk or a short run every day and make it a routine. When your dog gets used to it, your best friend will surely remind you every day that it’s time to go out and get moving. Not only you will enjoy the outdoors this way but you’ll also end up with an active body and a healthier pet.

• Dance. Yes, that’s right. DANCE! It doesn’t matter if you’re good at it or not, dancing gets your body

moving. If you have the time, you can also take dancing lessons. It will surely burn calories, improve your muscular endurance and boost your coordination. The best part, you’ll get to surprise your significant other with your new moves. Now get that music playing.

• Take the stairs. Back in the office? Not a problem. Avoid the elevators and take on a few flights of stairs. Strengthen your leg muscles and get your heart racing. You can do this during your breaks or use it as afternoon stretch before you head home. And don’t forget to bring your pedometer.

• Ride your bike to work. This classic way of going from point A to point B has a lot of advantages. Biking is an effective way of workout that can strengthen your leg muscles, improve blood circulation and boost your stamina.
