The Before, the During and the After
*
Really know the job you want them to do – not
what you think it might be – that way you’ll
recruit what you need!
*
Even for the most junior jobs and try to get
someone else involved – that way you are less
likely to just recruit someone you like (or is like
you!)
*
Work out what you really need them to be able
to do and work out a way to test it.
Always check references – verbally first if you
can and then in writing
*
Treat their arrival like a meeting with a new and
valued client and spend as much time as possible
with them.
Make them feel welcome and part of the team
*
Make sure you have something for them to do
which will make them feel like they are
contributing straight away (don’t overload them
though!)
*
Make sure you explain the company rules on such
things as:
*Work hours, breaks and timekeeping
*Use of the Internet etc.
*Sick absence and holidays
*
Contracts, Payroll etc. If you don’t know – ask
someone who does!
*
Set targets and goals as quickly as possible.
Explain how they can be achieved and offer any
training/advice as needed.
Establish review meetings to check progress
*
Give them the tools they need to succeed
including:
*Training
*Work Buddy
*Software
*Time!
*
Most people want to do the right thing and a
good and open review system will highlight
issues early without them feeling that you are
looking over their shoulder
