I. INTRODUCTION 1

The toothpicks and skewers factory is new in Rwanda and in our region (great lakes region) because their

activities started in January 2008, it means 4years of experience of my company, in order to plan toothpicks

factory in our region to exploit all region bamboo harvest, and to develop bamboo cultivation to increase

economically rich farmers; the country and the owner of the business. It will also advantage for our region to

satisfy them the bamboo products like toothpicks; Skewers; furniture and bamboo handcrafts.

Headquarter of my company located at GASABO district in KIGALI town near NYABUGOGO liver

where I planted the bamboo to use in the my future factory; the plots to build factory houses and up to

now my company has 13 workers trained by Chinese at CBRC (CHINA BAMBOO RESEARCH

CENTER) in The different trainings for Bamboo technology through the cooperation between Rwanda

and China and 2workers trained in China.

According the capacity of bamboo toothpicks machines and experience of my workers trained I will produce the

bamboo products whose value of 1.545.000Rwf per day, and monthly benefit of 18.583.660Rwf equivalent of 30

972.76USD after all expenses.

Also, this business it will be first in our region which gives hope to grow and the population of our region and

will have a lot of courage to plant more bamboo because will have the market for their harvests. And it will give

me the courage to start the factory as soon as possible, because I would also hope to have raw materials

(Bamboo) and a large market.

II. SOMMAIRE My business is to exploit all bamboo harvest of our region through toothpicks factory; furniture and bamboo

handcrafts. And, I'm sure that it will be a good result because I have enough experience from training about the

culture, and my workers also have sufficient training given by the CBRC (CHINA BAMBOO RESEARCH

CENTER) size at KABUYE in the District GASABO, from 11/01/2010 to 30/11/2010 on the toothpicks processing machines; from 10/01 to 20/01/2011 on Bamboo agriculture and 16/05 to 15 / 06/2011 on the making of art objects(Handcrafts) and furniture made of bamboo.

1. To make this business can progress very well, according the formations learned above, we need a sum

of Two hundred and fifty six million two hundred ninety five thousand and four hundred thirty six

Rwandan Francs (256,295,436 Rwf) say about (€ 323,370) equivalent to (427,159USD). This amount

will be distributed as follows:

Starting toothpick and skewers factory this phase will cost the company a sum of 187,037,436 Rwf,

including : 21factory machines; Hangar ; 1Raw materials Store ; Products store ; Office ; 2Trucks of

transportation the bamboo to factory ; 1Pick-up to distribute the factory products and office materials.

We will also produce other objects like furniture (to maximize the length of bamboo and to avoid

waste pieces of bamboo and have less waste), because we use the upper part of bamboo that has a

small diameter and small bamboo to produce the furniture, and the lower part of the bamboo that has a

large diameters to produce toothpicks and Skewers. So it's preferable to start also the production of

these art objects (Furniture & Bamboo Handcrafts) simultaneously.

The electric power is also one of the elements necessary to start the factory. It is expected a total of

16,000,000Rwf for this action, because the electric power is in 1.5 km from where we provides the

factory installation

2. To strengthening bamboo agriculture: We planed bamboo nursery to increase the number of bamboo

planted in Rwanda that can will use in the factory in the future, which cost the company a sum of

13,258, 000Rwf and I plan to increase the land to cultivate, in order to prepare for the future of the

factory this action need a sum of 56.000.000Rwf.

The total of this business becomes 256,295,436Rwf say € 323,370 equivalent of 427,159 USD. And this fund

will be recovered after two years of work, because in one year, the company will have an average profit of

195.808.889Rwf after paying all expenses of the business, and the company will continue to work without

difficulty.

The factory market products is about 90% because they are daily necessary products, needed in life of all

people (From the country side to city), and will be the first toothpick factory in the great lakes region and

in the country of East Africa (EAC).

It also gives hope to be profitable because we will not fail the bamboo to use as raw materials since bamboo

farmers will have the courage to produce more bamboo, and also the country will grow because the taxes

payment provided by my business.

We also plan to continue research on the bamboo cultivation through the cooperation with Chinese

experts in making more training for my employees, to be able to distribute the bamboo food in our

region, which has developed in Asia as a main daily mail.

III.2. LOCALISATION: Project activities are located at GIHEKA/KAGUGU Cell; KINYINYA

Sector; GASABO District in KIGALI-CITY.

III.3. ACTUAL SITUATION

The project of more producing bamboo’s harvest is interesting because I just cultivate bamboo on a land

of surface of 3.25 hectors and eighty percent (80%) can be exploited because it’s on its time to be

harvested. And I continue to increase my cultivation of bamboo trough bamboo nursery also encourage

people to cultivate bamboo as it is encouraged by a need of Rwanda government.

Some of the people had cultivated more bamboos and nowadays they can be brought to the factory in

order to be produced. I plan also to harvest the bamboo production be found in our region especially in

the Democratic Republic of Congo where there are more than 40% of land bamboo planted.

III.4. ACTIVITIES ZONE: I began the agriculture project in GASABO District; KINYINYA Sector;

GIHEKA/KAGUGU Cell,because is where there are fields and where I need to settle the factory in a

way of producing bamboo. I chose such an area because there is 80% of the whole treasure of land

where bamboo fields and land for is to build factory buildings those has a price of One hundred thirty

nine million and eight hundred seventy eight thousand Rwandan francs (139.878.000frw) equivalent to

233 130USD.

III.5. VISION OF BUSINESS AND EXPECTED RESULTS 4

The main vision the business is to reap and exploit all bamboo plants from our region in order to

participate in the development of bamboo farmers, and to satisfy bamboo products customers in our

region, and getting a level nearly 90% of the sale of my products at outside of the country, in order to

earn currency, and to be able to buy other machines so that we can harvesting all harvest of the bamboo

farmers of in our region.

OBJECTIVE OF BUSINESS a. Help all Rwandese in good health promotion.

b. Decrease some of commands materials from outside of the countries.

c. Receive many dollars (Money) inside the country from income of Factory’s products exploitation.

d. Teach Rwandese the importance of new materials from bamboo in order to stop using the materials

that Can be caught easily by rust wish can cause cancer of several kinds.

e. Increase oxygen by encouraging people to cultivate more bamboos that have a big part of livings

which Increase oxygen we need every day.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The vision of the project company of bamboo product is to satisfy at least 90% in selling materials from

bamboo factory and export them in order to bring dollars inside the country and be able to buy and

prepare the whole harvest of agriculturalists and all cooperatives interested in bamboo cultivation.

For all factory activities and production from bamboo without any wastage we might have at least 21

machines which are the following:

All those machines cost a total of Seventy seven thousand four hundred ninety one dollars (77.481USD), as

shown in the proforma invoice mentioned above.

ELECTRICITY TO FEEDING OF FACTORY

To feed these machines we need the electric current is in 1.5 kilometers of a factory. Indeed, we

have planned 30 poles for to hang up electric son it’s cost of 6.000.000frw whole length. With

Son three phase’s copper cables of 1.5 km of length which costs 10.000.000Fwr. All are equal

to sixteen million Rwandan francs (16,000,000Frw).

TRANSPORTER OF BAMBOO Unless the factory’s plantations, bamboo are also grown in all parts of the country as the

Government of Rwanda continues to encourage Rwandans to grow enough bamboo. So to get

them to the factory, it must have at least:

I can even take the opportunity to build another factory in another part of the country, as in the North

where there is enough bamboo, in order to reduce consumption to transport bamboo in the country and

the DRC-CONGO at the KIGALI factory, and also to be near to my customers in the North province.

To succeed it, I will be helped by my staff that will be everywhere, and the sponsor of the Ministry of

Agriculture and Forestry through (NAFA), as well as awareness to all Rwandans especially the

cooperatives whose cultivation of bamboo in its functions. It therefore feels that if the factory is

available it will produce more benefits.

V..BAMBOO TOOTHPICKS PROCESS DIAGRAMM Le traitement commencera en coupant les bambous aux champs et les transporter à l’usine où l’on coupera les

bambous en des morceaux de 2m de longueur a l’aide d’une machine a couper (Bamboo cross cutting machine)

pour rendre facile l’utilisation d’une autre machine (Bamboo splitting machine) qui coupe ce morceau

longitudinalement pour avoir des petites pièces semblable a une petite planche de bois pour faciliter les opération

suivant de diminution de l’épaisseur, en lissant ces petites planches en bambous cites ci-haut a l’aide d’une

machine a lisser (Knots removing & edge planning machine), pour préparer l’action de machine suivante

(Stick forming machine) qui rend ces pièces en bambous en une tige longue dont la diamètre de cure-dent, qui

permet la machine (short stick cutting machine) de faire son action de couper ces tiges a une longueur de cure-

dents voulut et la machines (Tip sharpening: (tip sharpener) continu a affuter les extrémités de ces petites tiges

de bambous mesurées suivant l’objets désirées (cure-dent ou broches). Pour mettre cure-dents en paquets, on

utilise une machine (Automatic toothpick wrapping machine) pour cure-dents. Et alors on aura une boite et des

petite paquets des cure-dents qu’on trouve dans les différents boutiques ; Bars’ Restaurants et dans les Hôtels par

tout au pays.

VI. EXPERIENCE 9

MUGACY TECHNOLOGY.CO; Ltd has four years experience in planting Bamboos, and with 13

employees of the company, we have taken different training courses on the toothpicks production ; on

furniture; bamboo handcrafts and on bamboo cultivation to increase the raw materials (bamboo plants).

We plan until now the bamboos plants aged 3 years and more than 30,708 bamboo seeds distributed to

Rwanda. It was resulted with the government supports through RDB (Rwanda Development Board);

NAFA (National Forestry Authority) and the cooperation between Rwanda and China through CBRC

(CHINA NATIONAL BAMBOO RESEARCH CENTER) located at KABUYE in GASABO district in

Kigali city.

This might arrive at a successful development of society, because all expenditures that the country used

to import toothpicks and other objects from bamboo in China will be reduced, because those products

will be local. And the products from the bamboos are necessary in the region and Rwanda in particular.

And I continue to make a bamboo nursery to advance the government's decision of the Eighth Congress

of INBAR (INTERNATIONAL NETWORK FOR BAMBOO AND LATTAN), which took place at

Serena Hotel / Kigali-Rwanda, November 11 2010 to encouraging bamboo farmers to grow their

bamboo plantation.



VII. MOTIVATION 10

Motivation provided for employees of the company will be calculated at about 1% of income of each

worker every year, and increased 4% of salary for each worker per year, to motivate and improve family

life of worker who has good revenue in the company, thus health insurance for my employees.

The management of the company continues to make every possible means to increase the knowledge of

workers through various training courses and hear all the problems of employees and make all possible

means to solve them.

VII.1. BAMBOO FURNITURE PRODUCTION AND BAMBOO HANDCRFTS

In the context to find the market for bamboo farmers, I also started to train my employees for the

manufacture of various products like: chairs, tables, vases, Hats, Fruit trays bamboo etc... (Certificate in

Annexe).This has a profit about fifteen thousand to forty five thousand Rwandan francs per day (15,000

to 45,000frw / J) due to increased use of bamboo, and machine capacity in this domain, and also has

experience of employees trained. Then statistically, according to the training that we have learned, we

can say that in the beginning of the factory, the production of art objects (handcraft and furniture) have

a value of 15.000frw per day, say 300.000frw per month for the first year, and there will plan 34 % of

the increasing of these items each year, according to the experience of employees in this domain.

To attain the good results we need:

-21 factory Machines from ZHEJIANG Province in China.

-Two Trucks to transport raw materials (bamboo) to factory and Pick-up to transport the products to

market.

-Hangar (House machinery) where will be installed the machines; stock for raw materials; Store of

products; Office and Electric power installation start the.

-Office materials to effectively control and monitor all activities of the bamboo factory.

All these activities cost Two hundred and fifty six million two hundred ninety-five

thousand four hundred thirty six Rwandan francs (256.295.436 Frw) say about (€ 323,370)

equivalent to ($ 427,159). These machines will help me to produce different objects that have the value of one million five

hundred thousand Rwanda francs (1.500.000frw) equivalent to 2 500USD according to the

power of machines, and employees trained, and the existing bamboo harvest in our region.

FACTORY INSURANCE:

The factory’s assurance is expected on 5% of all value of company to protect against disasters that may

occur:

VIII. PRODUCTS MARKET AND COMPETITIVITY 12

The products of the factory have a market the country and abroad, because nowhere in the Great Lakes

region and in the EAC (East African Community) where you sell toothpicks, skewers, and not

toothpicks factory in our region. And therefore, those products are very interested to everyone because

all the people will need in daily life (from rural to town; rich and poor). Then, Rwanda is a touristic

country that contains the hotels; Resto-Bars, Motels, Houses of passage which contain the target market

for my products in the country, and every person of Rwanda in particular use these products to fight

against dental disease and those from rusty material like (steel skewers…).Then MUGACY company

would be the only distributor of these products on the market of East Africa and in the countries of great

lakes in particular. As has pronounced during the meeting which took place in Rwanda (INBAR

Summit: International Network for Bamboo and Rattan) on 11/11/2010 that I participated, said the

number of requests for bamboo products is increases every day due to Rwanda development that

increased rapidly.

To earn this vast market, it is necessary that my products will have low prices compared to those from

my Asians competitors, because my products are local in our region; it means that the taxes will be

almost very following the conventions in member country of East Afirican community (EAC), and

countries of the great lakes region (CPGL). The quality of my products will be controlled by the

organization for standardizations so they will have a certificate of good quality given by RBS

(RWANDA BUREAU OF STANDARDS) et ISO (INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION FOR

STANDARDIZATIONS) so that we can compete well in the great market (Exporting) without

difficulty, and I shall doubtless be acknowledged as the publication will be made by the diffusion

information to the radio, on television, Trade shows throughout the world in newspapers and other

ceremonies where I am invited as a company owner. This will help me also to increase the customers.

Competition for my products will be low because up until now my Asian competitors do not cover the

market of our region, because their products come from far away makes them very expensive and

insufficient. While I will be able to satisfy the market to 90% due to low prices and be near the market,

thus that the exemption of taxes of my products in our region, that market contain 95% of my target

market.

INTEREST AND IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT

INTEREST

As it is shown by the specialists in making machines for Bamboo exploitation; during 8hours, they can

produce about one million toothpicks it means 120kg of toothpick, and 500,000 skewers

Dealing with the given information, we can say that:

- One package of toothpick of 65mm cost 50Fwr and counts 100picks it means that in 8hours; we can

produce 10,000 packages for the price of 500,000Fwr.

- One package of skewers cost 250Fwr and one package count 100picks; that means in 8hours we can

produce 5,000 packages for the price o1,250,000Fwr. It is done only in 8hours (from 7:00AM to

5:00 PM) it also means that during one month (20days) because workers have to rest during the

week-end; we can produce (1,250,000fwr +500,000fwr) X20days it means 35,000,000Fwr.

- As it’s shown by the Factory that made up those machines the factory can employ 9 persons both

gender. Here in my company, the disposition for women is 55% of all factory employees. And each

one can be salaried of 70,000Fwr per month it means 630,000Fwr per month for all employees.

- As it is said again by ZHEJIANG YONGKANG SUNCITY INDUSTRY CO.,LTD all those

machines can consume 49.42KW it means 395.36KWH of electricity per day, then 1KW cost

140Fwr according EWSA invoice(ENERGY WATER SANITATION AUTHORITY),that means at

least 55.350frws per day(in 8hours). In one month (20days) they can consume 1.107.000frws of

electricity.

- One package of 100toothpicks cost 20Fwrand it’s the same for one package of skewer it means all

envelopes can cost 6,000,000Fwr per month.

Concerning the interest of the project company on people and especially on its area, we can say that:

1. For employees who will work for the company.

2. It will be the diminution of jobless because we will employ more than nine persons so that

their family living can be good.

3. Dealing with surroundings, bamboo plantation and other plants give oxygen and as well as

they are increased they will give good health to the people.

4. By factory machines there will not be pollution because they will use electricity instead of

using petroleum or gas which can pollute the atmosphere because of the smoked from

machines.

5. According to the economy of the country, it will highly be increased be cause there will be

found taxes of about 18% of what will be sold and the dollars spent to buy from out side

will be decreased because we expect to export product from the factory that will bring

dollars to Rwanda.

6. Some sickness as cancer caused by rusty objects used in roasting meat will be decreased. In

general this project company will help people, the country and especially the local area

where the factory is built.

government of Rwanda is encouraging Rwandans to cultivate more bamboo in different parts of

Thus the field of the company can provide such sum because 80% of the bamboo fields need to be

harvested. So it will be no doubt that this business will not be advantageous.

The bamboo toothpicks will be unique in this region, and in the East Africa countries (EAC), thus

as well as taxes will be low compared with products from the Asian continent.
