Collaboration must be learnt

Laura Esperidón Parres, TMA alumni and now teacher of Arts & Crafts at Colegio de Fomento Altozano, Alicante, is continuing to nurture the craft of collaboration amongst the next generation of designers. The challenges they will face in the modern world make collaboration ever more necessary to overcome them.

The aim of her course is for students to work together to gain a better understanding of architecture through an examination of some of the finer historical examples.

Alongside her mentorings of the collaborative nature of an architect’s work, Laura also teaches that many of the 20thC architects did anything but collaborate, and that this independence of spirit lay behind some of our more exalted architectural heritage.

The students come together to discuss and create architectural models of the selected buildings that are then presented to and critiqued by esteemed professors of architecture from the University of Alicante.

Laura’s encouragement of the next generation to initiate, embrace and craft this essential requirement is an important first step and predicts a strong foundation for the future.

Crossrail Eastern Stations - Before and After

The Crossrail works for the eastern stations are open and in full swing, in preparation for December 2019, when the full Elizabeth line service brings them so much closer to London.

Customers and staff are already benefitting from all the improvements to the ticket halls at Seven Kings, Manor Park, Ilford, Chadwell Heath and Brentwood.

New equipment, new finishes, new lighting and the new clean and simplified lines of the public spaces are doing their best to reflect the quality of new train services, while the local architectural qualities of their Edwardian exteriors have also had a makeover to give them a new lease of life.

Abigail Working Experience

We have been enjoying the company of Abigail, a bright and clever future civil engineer, on her two week work experience in our office.

Abigail has been learning different software and techniques in Sketchup, Photoshop, Indesign and Microstation. She has been attending meetings (which apparently was her favourite part - she’ll make a good engineer :-) and helping Trisha and Mariela taking pictures of our recently completed projects for the Crossrail stations to the east of London.

On her last day, Abigail prepared an excellent presentation that summarised her experience and the new skills acquired while at the office. We all hope this will help her decide her future career, and of course we did our best to point her towards architecture.

Abigail’s integrity, fast-learning skills and willingness to help made us all consider her as one more integral piece of our team, even in such a short period of time. All power to Abigail!

Cultural Wednesdays

Following our tradition of enjoying a weekly cultural walk, and invaded by our colleague Abigail’s youthful spirit, we have visited the exhibitions at the Bartlett and the Architectural Association as well as the Institution of Civil Engineers. With hundreds of drawings, models, installations and photographs from the 2016/2017 academic year, we can honestly say we came away with inspiration, stimulation and amusement in equal measure - born of sacrifice and work capacity rarely seen in the real world.

Serpentine Pavilion

As every year the Serpentine Pavilion is a mandatory stop for architects. This time Francis Kéré’s African canopy makes a play of the London environment - sunlight and heavy rain - with a bold structure inspired by the tree that serves as a central meeting point for life in his home town of Gando.

Out and AboutAnd while we have enjoyed the delights of London’s student architects, Tony has headed off in the opposite direction, to Mongolia where the architecture is pure and un-theorised.

Boat Trip

Luisa, Jayne, Jerome and Tony attended this year’s London Bridge Associates Boat Trip. The excellent weather allowed us to enjoy the splendid views of the riverbanks from the top deck, while socialising with some of the 200+ merry folk on board.

Mudlarking

In the interstitial yards described by the wax and wane of land and water lies opportunity and tradition undiscovered and, by necessity, explored with infrequency. It is the province of the Mudlark, that distinctly London character, the fundamental exponent of the City’s opportunism and inquisitiveness.

Asides Opportunities

Swan Lane pier is gone, transport infrastructure of times past abandoned and removed to make way for new potential at this historic shoreline. Nearby, at Bank station, a more recent transport infrastructure that knits our city is being modernised and expanded.

Mudlarking

In time-honoured fashion, the Mudlark platform extracts a marginal benefit from these changes in our City. Laying just below the water’s surface at high tide, the platform awaits the revolution of the firmament while dispelling the heat of the underground.

The Mongolians are nomads at heart and in lifestyle moving their Gers four times a year in response to vegetation and season. The sequence of pictures shows a Ger being dismantled by Tony’s hosts, stripping the layers of felt and

cotton that make up the 50mm of skin between the home and the +35 to -50 deg weather conditions. Reminiscent of those seemingly regular architectural competitions for instant housing, is it a scene from the past, or is it our future?
