Born in Ponza, Italy on January 31, 1922, Jim Mazzella came to America at the age of seven. He learned the English language, worked his way through grammar school and eventually attended Toronto High School in Toronto, Ohio.

After high school, he moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 1939. It was there that he and his father, Antonio, set up the first-ever rigging shop for the Wire Rope Corporation of America (WIRECO).

In 1941, Jim joined the U.S. Navy where he went to work as one of 325,000 Seabees constructing bridges, roads, hospitals and warehouses during World War II on Guam and elsewhere in the South Pacific.

After the war, he met his future wife, Phyllis. They married June 29, 1946 in Charleston, West Virginia. They had four children over the next 13 years—Jean, Carolyn, Tony and Jim, Jr.

After briefly running his own rigging business in Charleston, Jim moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he worked for The Frank Morrison Company. In 1954, he opened his own rigging shop, Mazzella Wire Rope & Sling Company, known today as Mazzella Lifting Technologies. While handling all aspects of the business, Jim also invented a high-capacity lifting sling known as the Mazzella 7-Part™ Wire Rope Sling. Its design is so unique that very few rigging shops in the world know how to make it.

Today, the company is owned by his sons, Tony and Jim, Jr. What was once a one-man operation has turned into 15 locations with more than 350 employees.

It is useful to understand where you've been before deciding where you want to go. Our history has served as a foundation of who we are, what we believe and what we value. Back in 1954, Jim Mazzella formed a business by providing the most basic of lifting devices, along with wire rope slings that were braided by hand. It wasn't the cleanest and certainly not the easiest job around, but it was fundamental to the industry. This gut-level standard of performance defined the company in 1954 and it defines the company to this day. From the shop floor to the front office, every employee knows and understands the no-excuses, customer-first mentality that is threaded throughout the company. In every customer interaction, we instill confidence and comfort.

Mazzella provides crane inspections, field crane inspections, lifting inspections and hoist inspections.

Sling Inspections

Mazzella provides sling inspections, required OSHA inspections, wire rope inspections, rigging inspections and proof tests. We employ over 90 certified inspectors

Crane Repair

Mazzella / KCI crane repair services include scheduled preventative overhead crane maintenance, emergency overhead crane repair, authorized warranty repair, installation (entire overhead crane systems and spare parts), crane modernization / modifications / upgrades.

Sling Repair

Many types of slings are repairable, such as alloy chain slings, wire rope bridles, twin path slings and bridles and various synthetic web slings with hardware.

Mazzella proof tests all slings that are repaired.

Items must be sent to Mazzella for inspection and repair. The Sling Repair Department will inspect and provide a quote for any needed repairs.

Block Repair

The Standards Development Process

In developing ASME B30 and other codes and standards, ASME employs a consensus-based process that considers the input of all relevant stakeholders. Due process for all input regarding ASME B30 is assured and monitored. The development process is open to public review at appropriate stages, and the actions of the committee are documented and completely transparent. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has accredited the Society's process for the development of ASME B30 and other standards. The principles of ASME's standards development process are consistent with those of the World Trade Organization's Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement.

About ASME B30 for Cranes

The ASME B30 safety standard for cranes initially began in 1916 as an eight page Code of Safety Standard for Cranes. Since that time, the standard has been continuously updated to reflect technological improvements, lessons-learned from experience, and present day "best practices". Today the B30 standard consists of 28 volumes that are reviewed or updated, at a minimum of every five years, by the B30 consensus committee whose charter is to develop, maintain, and interpret safety codes and standards covering the construction, installation, operation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of cranes and related equipment.

The B30 standard sets forth definitions and guidelines on "how to" design and manufacture, inspect, maintain, and use cranes with safety as the primary focus. For example, ASME B30.5-2007 for mobile cranes is the first standard to contain provisions that clearly define the lines of responsibility for each individual (owner, user, supervisor, lift director, operator) instead of leaving this matter subject to individual interpretation, and similar provisions are being considered for inclusion in the other B30 volumes.

ASME B30 Safety Standard for Cranes & Related Equipment

Purpose of ASME B30

The purpose of the B30 standard is to help prevent or minimize injury to workers, and otherwise provide for the protection of life, limb and property by prescribing safety requirements. They provide direction to crane manufacturers, owners, employers and users. The standard provides guidance to governments and other regulatory bodies in the development, promulgation, and enforcement of appropriate safety directives and can be adopted in whole or in part for governmental or regulatory use (by reference).

B30 for Cranes - Types of Equipment

The ASME B30 standard covers the types of vertical lifting equipment found in the majority of work environments including tower cranes, mobile cranes, and overhead cranes. It also address many other types of lifting equipment found in special work environments including detachable hardware for lifting purposes, such as rigging, slings and below-the-hook lifting devices.

Below are the basic elements and formats of our warnings. In most of our warnings, four basic elements or types of information are provided:

1. A “Signal Word” such as “DANGER”, “WARNING”, or “CAUTION.” This word is meant to attract the attention of the user to the warning statement. The signal word also identifies the degree of potential danger or risk in using the product.

2. A “Hazard Statement” such as “FAILURE TO USE TACKLE BLOCK CORRECTLY MAY CAUSE LOAD TO SLIP OR FALL.” This statement is meant to inform or remind the user of factors involved in the task or work environment that can create a hazard.

3. A “Consequence Statement” such as “FAILURE TO FOLLOW APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.” This statement is meant to inform or remind the user that failure to avoid the hazard can have harmful consequences.

4. An “Instruction Statement” such as “PREPARE WIRE ROPE TERMINATION ONLY AS INSTRUCTED.” This statement is meant to inform or remind the user of the proper steps or procedures for using the product safely and avoiding the hazard.

Mazzella Warning System

Throughout this catalog, there is a warning system in place. This system directs the user to product specific warnings and safety guidelines, which are located at the end of each section. In this section, the manufacturer's product warnings will be listed. There will also be another signal used to direct users to the manufacturer's website. There you will find the most current and complete set of warnings, application and safety information.

Signal Words

In our warnings, a “signal word” is used to attract attention of the user to the warning. As indicated below, another purpose of the signal word is to identify the level of risk or hazard involved. Sometimes, the signal word will be accompanied by a “safety alert symbol” such as an exclamation point inside a triangle. The signal word will always appear within a box or panel separated from the remainder of the warning by a border and, in some cases, may have a contrasting background color such as red, orange or yellow. The majority of warnings use the signal words:

STATIC LOADThe load resulting from a constant applied force or load.

WORKING LOAD LIMITThe maximum mass or force which the product is authorizedto support in general service when the pull is applied in-line, unless noted otherwise, with respect to the centerline of the product. This term is used interchangeably with the followingterms:

WORKING LOADThe maximum mass or force which the product is authorized to support in a particular service.

PROOF LOADThe average force applied in the performance of a proof test; the average force to which a product may be subjected before deformation occurs.

PROOF TESTA test applied to a product solely to determine injurious material or manufacturing defects.

ULTIMATE LOADThe average load or force at which the product fails or no longer supports the load.

SHOCK LOADA force that results from the rapid application of a force (such as impacting or jerking) or rapid movement of a static load. A shock load significantly adds to the static load.

DESIGN FACTORAn industry term denoting a product’s theoretical reserve capability; usually computed by dividing the catalog ultimate load by the Working Load Limit. Generally expressed as a ratio, e.g., 5 to 1.

Type Approved is a symbol that identifies products that have been Type Approved by various third party organizations. Meeting a standard can be declared as a result of “TYPE APPROVAL” by a third party organization. Type Approval requires: 1. A TYPE APPROVAL CERTIFICATE that verifies that the product design complies with the referenced standard(s) and, 2. A (MSA) MANUFACTURING SURVEY that verifies that the manufacturing location has been verified as capable of making the product. 3. A PRODUCT CERTIFICATE must be made available that verifies that the product shipped meets the requirements of the TYPE APPROVAL and MSA. This product certificate must reference a serial number or P.I.C. and is issued for each product produced.

WARRANTIES AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY WARRANTIES: Mazzella Companies (“Mazzella”) warrants to a customer of Mazzella’s products (the “Purchaser”), that the equipment designed and manufac-tured by Mazzella and sold to the Purchaser (collectively, the “Equipment”) shall be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service by the Purchaser, for a period of one (1) year from the date such Equipment is sold by Mazzella to the Purchaser or 60 days on an import product; provided that the foregoing warranty is conditioned upon such Equipment being operated at all times completely in accordance with generally approved practices as specified by Mazzella service instructions and provided that the Purchaser notifies Mazzella or its area representa-tive in writing as soon as any defect becomes apparent. For all units and accessories Manufactured By Others (collectively, the “Accessories” and individually an “Accessory”) which are sold by Mazzella to the Purchaser in conjunction with the Equipment, the period for the foregoing warranty shall be equal to the lesser of: (a) one (1) year from the date such Accessory or Accessories are sold by Mazzella to the Purchaser, or (b) the warranty pe-riod as provided by the original manufacturer of such Accessory or Acces-sories. “Manufactured By Others” shall mean designed, produced or man-ufactured by any person or entity other than Mazzella and shall include but not be limited to the following: Instrumentation: Electrical or Pneumatic Components; and Power Transmission Components. Mazzella’s liabilities under the foregoing warranties shall be limited to the repair or replace-ment, at Mazzella’s sole option and discretion, of the defective part or ma-terial F.O.B. shipping point excluding labor for removal or replacement of such parts or material. The foregoing warranties are in lieu of any and all other warranties against defects in material or workmanship, expressed or implied. EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY PROVIDED HEREIN, MAZZELLA MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES, EITHER EX-PRESSLY OR IMPLIEDLY, CONCERNING THE EQUIPMENT, THE AC-CESSORIES, OTHER PRODUCTS, ANY DOCUMENTATION FOR THE FOREGOING, ANY MAINTENANCE SERVICES TO THE FOREGOING OR ANY OTHER SERVICES TO OR FOR THE FOREGOING. MAZZELLA SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. MAZZELLA DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE EQUIPMENT AND/OR THE ACCESSORIES WILL MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE PURCHASER OR WILL OPERATE IN THE MANNER THAT MAY BE SELECTED FOR USE BY THE PURCHASER OR THAT THE OPERATION OF THE EQUIPMENT AND/OR ACCESSO-RIES WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. IN NO EVENT SHALL MAZZELLA BE LIABLE TO THE PURCHASER OR ANY OTHER PERSON OR ENTITY FOR ANY ACTIONS, CLAIMS, CAUSES OF ACTION, DAMAGES, EXPENSES AND/OR LIABILITIES ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO THE DESIGN, USE, FAILURE OR INTERRUPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT AND/OR ACCESSORIES OR FOR ANY INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OR LOSS OF PROFIT OR OTHER FINANCIAL LOSS ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR FAILURE OF THE EQUIPMENT AND/OR ACCESSORIES, EVEN IF MAZZELLA HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH AC-TIONS, CLAIMS, CAUSES OF ACTION, DAMAGES, EXPENSE, LOSS AND/OR LIABILITIES. MAZZELLA’S SOLE AND AGGREGATE LIABILITY TO THE PURCHASER AND ANY OTHER PERSON OR ENTITY FOR ANY ACTIONS, CLAIMS, CAUSES OF ACTION, DAMAGES, EXPENS-ES, LOSSES AND/OR LIABILITIES WHATSOEVER, AND REGARDLESS OF THE FORM THEREOF, WHETHER IN CONTRACT OR IN TORT, IN-CLUDING NEGLIGENCE, SHALL NOT EXCEED AN AMOUNT EQUAL TO FIFTY PERCENT (50%) OF THE AMOUNTS PAID TO MAZZELLA BY THE PURCHASER FOR THE PURCHASE OF ANY DEFECTIVE EQUIP-MENT AND/OR ACCESSORIES (AS APPROPRIATE).
