WELCOME‘The answer my friend, is blowin’ in the wind, The answer is blowin’ in the wind.’ Bob Dylan

Whilst we may be in the dark at the minute, by the end of November, we shall know what answer the American people have delivered by electing the 45th President of the United States of America. The relationship between the UK and the US is longstanding and deep rooted, thus it seemed appropriate for the programme to reflect upon this great nation’s impact on the world of the Arts. Musically our focus is on the influence of American composers and the variety of music which has emanated from those shores. The Home of the Brave gives a glimpse of that variety with music from Copland, Glass, Gershwin and Joplin all being performed. Later in the season we encounter the minimalist style of Terry Riley, where the audience is invited to join in or drop out as they so choose, before the season ends with the Symphony Orchestra concert in the chapel, an annual highlight of the School Calendar.

Who’s afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue, considers the impact of colour in influencing our perception of a piece of art. The decision making behind choices of colours will be explored further in a fascinating talk by Frank Woodgate, a lecturer and guide at Tate Modern, in early October. Staying with America, but actively broaching the political world, we are delighted to invite you to come along and hear Tim Stanley and Tom Tugendhat, MP, discuss the potential impact of the US election on the UK. On a different tack, we are delighted to welcome Professor David Crystal and his son, Ben, in early September for a lecture The Tongue that Shakespeare Spoke, which will consider how the sounds and meanings of Shakespeare’s words have changed over the course of time.

Our drama offerings this term are as wide and diverse as ever. NT live returns, the school play, The Government Inspector, satirically considers political corruption whilst lighter shades are sure to be found in Dinosaur Park, Penguin Elephant and an adaptation of Michael Murpurgo’s Why the Whales Came. As Christmas approaches, younger ones are sure to enjoy Blunderbus’ production of Lily and the Little Snow Bear. With sell-out shows in the last three years, this looks set to carry on that fine tradition, so early booking is advised.

All of the above and much more beside, promise to entertain, challenge and intrigue audiences in the coming months. Please do look through the brochure carefully; we are confident that there is something for every taste and we look forward to seeing you here in the coming months.

PENGUIN! ELEPHANT!“Waddle waddle waddle, stomp stomp stomp” Goblin’s new musical adventure for children ages 3+.

Penguin is a little bit selfish. Penguin loves fish fingers, but never shares them. Everything is black and white and that’s just the way Penguin likes it. Until one day Elephant turns up. Elephant is big. Elephant is messy. Elephant likes lots of colour everywhere. However will Penguin cope!?

With original songs, hilarious physical comedy and dance, Penguin! Elephant! is a magical new show about celebrating differences for anyone who’s ever waddled like a Penguin or stomped like an Elephant.

The show includes a rap about Fish Fingers, some food based-mess and a magical balloon ride that will have children ages 3+ jumping for joy.

Wednesday 14th SeptemberJames Seabright presents Superbolt Theatre’s production

DINOSAUR PARK (THE JURASSIC PARODY)This award-winning, laugh-out-loud spin on Spielberg’s classic Jurassic Park is a theatrical celebration of cinematic nostalgia. The perfect parody for those waiting anxiously for the next film, and an enjoyable entertainment for everyone else!

Welcome to the unlikely setting of Lyme Regis Community Centre, where the Park Family embark on a journey to a misty past. When things go wrong, family feuds are faced with the rapturous roar of DIY dinosaurs.

Superbolt Theatre’s five-star production is an epic adventure of show-stopping, spine-tingling theatrics and megalithic mayhem. Direct from a sell-out London season, and an official sell-out status at Edinburgh Fringe 2015, the show tours the UK for the first time!

Just like the film that inspired it, Dinosaur Park is rated PG and is unsuitable for under 8s.

THE TONGUE THAT SHAKESPEARE SPOKEA lecture by Professor David Crystal and Ben Crystal on the original pronunciation of Shakespearean English and its effect on meaning and interpretation.

David Crystal, Professor of Linguistics and perhaps the pre-eminent international scholar on the history of the English language, and his son Ben, an actor and part of the Passion in Practice theatre company, present a dynamic and fascinating introduction to the increasingly popular world of Original Pronunciation. The way we hear Shakespeare today, in Received Pronunciation, is not how it would have sounded to an audience at the Globe Theatre in 1605, and crucially it is not necessarily what it would have meant either: meaning has been altered by shifting sound and hearing Shakespeare in a new-yet-old way makes familiar and unfamiliar texts accessible in unexpected and wonderful ways.

WHO’S AFRAID OF RED, YELLOW AND BLUE?This exhibition explores colour through the practices of 3 contemporary painters; Virginia Bodman, Julian Brown and Gill Ord. They use colour to draw us into their work and seduce us, but also confound our expectations with unusual or dissonant contrasts. By using colour strategically they help us to become actively engaged in the process of thinking and looking at painting; unpicking and discovering our likes, dislikes, prejudices and associations.

The title of the exhibition comes from a series of large-scale paintings by the American abstract expressionist Barnett Newman, created in the late 1960s. He was critiquing the use of colour according to theory, rather than for its more expressive qualities. It highlights the way our understanding of colour begins with the rules we learn when we are young, and often develops unconsciously with our observations from the world around us.

VENTOUXVentoux is the most fearsome mountain encountered on the Tour de France.

It is also the story of Lance Armstrong and Marco Pantani – whose drug-fuelled race in 2000 was the greatest cycling had ever seen. Ventoux charts the parallel lives of these champions who overcame great adversity in tandem, and the mountain that cast them in opposing directions.

Join 2Magpies as they restage the race using breathtaking video accompaniment and a pair of road bikes, asking the question – how far will we go to succeed?

In this lecture Frank Woodgate discusses the use of colour by some of the key figures in modern art: the Fauves, Mondrian and the Abstract Expressionists. He will also use a selection of paintings by the artists in “Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue?” to talk about contemporary artists’ colour strategies. There will be a chance to see the show before and after the talk.

NATIONAL YOUTH MUSIC THEATRE

THE PIPER OF HAMELINThe Piper of Hamelin is a children’s opera by the British composer, John Rutter to a libretto by Jeremy James Taylor, founder of the National Youth Music Theatre. It is both witty and moving in telling the exemplary tale of the greed and avarice of the townsfolk of Hamelin, and the tragic punishment brought upon them by the strange travelling Piper who they double-cross after he has saved their city from a plague of rats.

The National Youth Music Theatre, now celebrating its 40th anniversary, represents the very best in work with young people in musical theatre, leading Andrew Lloyd Webber to describe it as “the best youth music theatre in the world.”

Suitable for all ages.

RILEY. IN CTerry Riley’s seminal piece of minimalism comprises fifty-three melodic patterns played in sequence. The performers, playing a wide variety of instruments or even singing, get to choose how many times they play each pattern as well as its dynamic and relative speed. The mesmeric polyrhythmic nature of the music creates a spontaneous, ever-changing series of different musical shapes – a living sound installation. This twelve-hour long performance will feature a large number of performers playing for short periods at a time. Audience members are free to drop in and out or even join in. Instruments will be available!

TONBRIDGE SCHOOL PRESENTS

THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR BY NIKOLAI GOGOL ADAPTED BY ADRIAN MITCHELLA small rural town in Tsarist Russia, a corrupt Governor and a string of incompetent officials are thrown into chaos when news reaches them that a Government Inspector has been sent from St. Petersburg. Travelling incognito, he will scrutinise every aspect of the administration of the town.

Nikolai Gogol’s classic comedy is as much a satire on human vanity as it is a reflection on the corruption and abuse of positions of authority by self-seeking officials. First staged in 1836, the play was only passed fit for public performance after much discussion with the Russian censors and eventually was accepted by the Tsar on the grounds of it being a ‘farce’, rather than the observational satire about corruption which it clearly is. Its continued popularity is partly due to resonances about the abuse of their position by those in public office, as well as the classic comic structures used in the play.

SEASON CLOSEThe season closes with four American classics. Copland’s imposing fanfare was inspired in part by a famous speech by Vice President Henry A. Wallace proclaiming the dawning of the “Century of the Common Man”. It has now become part of cinematic culture, as has Barber’s haunting adagio. No survey of American Music would be complete without John Cage’s ultimate example of “Music of Chance”. The same could be said of George Gershwin’s dazzling symphonic poem, with its sleazy blues and Parisian car horns.
