The company carried out part of the work on the multimillion dollar Nelson Bay Road upgrade, which was their first contract in Australia and upon completion of the job they generously donated their surplus equipment, which included not only the tanks, but office equipment also, to our not-for -profit community facility. DIGGINGS FROM OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN

The storms that devastated the Port Stephens area in April caused much damage to the college grounds, however we were very lucky that the huge gum pictured, fell into the car park on a day when there were no courses scheduled, so little to no damage caused to personal property. The garden also missed much of the serious damage.

On a more positive note, our community college has been very fortunate in being donated two 30,000 litre water tanks, from the Spanish international construction company, Ferrovial agroman.

- 15 -

It is reassuring that this company, which is listed on the internet as one of the 50 largest construction companies in the world and whose first contract in Australia was part of the Nelson Bay Road upgrade, wanted to give back to our local community on their departure.

The tanks have been installed in the college grounds and this additional water will ensure the gardeners have a permanent, sustainable water supply throughout the warmer months.

Applications have been lodged for grants for the pump and irrigation system and we remain hopeful of success.

Pictured is a student from Nelson Bay Pre-School. The children visited our garden last week and this was a return visit as they enjoyed it so much previously. They take pleasure in its beauty and enjoy learning about the vegetables. These visits are informative and educational, teaching healthy eating habits and demonstrating from where our produce comes. They left with a plant to take home and strawberry plants for the pre-school.

Our gardeners have accomplished many lovely features recently, such as adding garden beds for flowers and trees, a pergola to enhance the pond area where it is planned to grow a climbing rose. They have also paved the blueberry bed to neaten it up.

Lots of beautiful winter vegetables are ready for purchase, call in Monday, Wednesday or Saturday mornings.

We currently have broccoli, cauliflower, leeks, herbs, cabbages and plants to sell.

The garden Team look forward to your visit, who knows, you may wish to join them!
