• Wired networks were not built for mobility
• Network segments are “fixed”• Segments accessed through
authorized wired ports
• WLAN Security Switches build inter-switch tunnels that make network segments available to authorized users anywhere in the mobility domain1. Bob accesses network through local switch on authorized
subnet
2. Amy visits Bob and wants to access network through AP on foreign segment
3. Inter-switch tunnel provides a path for Amy back to authorized subnet

• Existing applications, services and security are designed for a “static”state
• WLAN 2300 insulates network and applications from “mishandling”roaming users
• Security keeps working
• Multi-cast keeps working
1. Amy roams to AP on her home subnet (red), traffic now gets forwarded directly from local switch
2. Bob roams with Amy, and traffic flows through inter-switch tunnel to his home subnet (blue)
3. Seamless mobility – all applications work, all the time, in all locations

WMM
IP Phone 1535
• Standards-based mechanism for enforcing QoS over RF links
• WMM is a Wi-Fi Alliance certification for products that claim IEEE 802.11e compliance
• Call Admission Control (WMM-SA)• Application provides a transmission specification
(Tspec) that includes required bw and minimum delay, jitter, packet loss
• Certification program pending
• Scheduled Delivery (WMM-PowerSave)• AP buffers traffic until device requests delivery
• Packet Prioritization (WMM)• Multi-level priority queuing and delivery
• QoS for voice clients and handsets

SVP
• Proprietary mechanism for enforcing QoS over the wireless link
• For use with WLAN Handsets 22XX
• Requires WLAN Telephony Manager 2245
• Call admission control • limits the number of voice calls that can be initiated
on an AP
• Scheduled delivery • coordinates transmissions to save battery life on
voice handsets
• Packet prioritization• Expedites AP transmissions of SVP packets

Management Enhancements Minor Enhancements – Overview
• CLI Quickstart Enhancements• Separate admin and enable passwords
• 802.1Q tag configuration for default VLAN
• Configuration for Timezone and Daylight Savings Time
• Automatic Generation of Self Signed Certificates
• Admin, EAP and Web-AAA self-signed certificates are now generated automatically on bootup when no certificates exist on the switch
• The WSS will not replace self-signed certificates or CA-signed certificates that are already installed on the switch
• You can replace an automatically generated certificates by creating self-signed or installing CA-signed certificates
• Extended Life for Self Signed Certificates• Self-signed certificates automatically or manually
generated are now valid for three years
• Certificates are valid beginning one week before the time and date set on the WSS when the certificates were generated
• AP Location and Contact Information• Using CLI or WMS administrators can now
specify the location and contact information
• Provides the ability to allow administrators to track the location of APs
• RADIUS Accounting Enhancements• Added support to allow the WSS to send
accounting update records at periodic intervals
• Added support to allow the WSS to send Accouting-On and Accounting-Off messages when the WSS is administratively shut down
• These enhancements can be used in conjunction with billing systems that require periodic accounting messages
• SNMP Community String Enhancement• The WSS will now allow any printable
ASCII characters (except white space) to be used in SNMP community strings

Visitor Based Networking
• Secure, convenient network connectivity for guests and temporary users
• Streamlined application allows front-desk personnel to generate a unique ID/PW for each visitor
• Entries expire and are automatically purged
• Each ID is associated with a templated security profile
• VLAN/Subnet restrictions• Access control list• Time-of-day restrictions• Restricted locations
• Usage logging
• Guest user tunneling• Binds user to internet gateway• Prevents any intra-VLAN peer communications
Guest Provisioning Application
Nortel WLAN 2300 Customer Presentation
Guest User TunnelingProtecting networks from guest user threats
• By default clients within a VLAN are able to communicate with each another directly at Layer 2
• Risk: guests able to communicate with all devices in VLAN
• Guest user tunneling forwards all traffic to Internet
• Up to 4 MAC addresses can be authorized• Examples: DNS, DHCP, Default gateway
and/or VPN server
• Helps prevent the spread of worms / viruses
• Provide insulated guest access • Protect clients in public hotspots
