MASTEROPPGAVE 2014Conservation and Sustainability: the role of Stakeholder issues in determining the future of Brutalist Architecture (Unpublished)

A study of the relationship between stakeholders and perceived cultural heritage values, looking at Brutalist Architecture. The study focused on developing an applied method for assessing this relationship, using Park Hill, Sheffield and Alexandra Road, London, as case study examples of different approaches.

BARKING MAGISTRATES COURT, LONDON Wessex Archaeology Documentation, condition assessment and advice concerning conservation strategy. The Court was established in 1960 in a former public library and offices opened 1894. The work looked particularly at the change of use and the adaptation of the building from public services to a criminal role.

ROYAL ALBERT DOCK, LONDON CB Richard EllisConservation and setting assessment and guidance for the treatment of two Grade II listed buildings, the Dock Managers’ Of-fices and the Central Buffet. The buildings formed the central trade and commerce area the Royal Albert Dock during its oper-ation and are especially significant in that they form the largest surviving example of an early concrete construction technique pioneered by William Lascelles.

BRITISH TELECOM TOWER, LONDON British TelecomDocumentation of the British Telecom communication tower in central London, prior to the removal of the 1960s parabol dishes and horns. This included extensive contextual research at the British Telecom Archives.

BRANNSIKKER JUGENDBYÅlesund councilDocumentation of Ålesund’s Art Nouveau buildings and developing an updated protection plan for the City. This included developing appropriate fire-protection for these historic buildings in conjunction with the City’s fire services and English Heritage.

Bygningen ligger på hjørnet av Keiser Wilhelms gate og Rådstugata, mellom Keiser Wilhelms gate 45 og Rådstugata 4. Den består av tre etasjer samt loft og kjeller. Bygningen ble bygd som en konfesjonsbutikk med lagringsplass på 1. etasje og en 2 etasjes leilighet øverst. Det var en stor ominnredning i 1940 i forbindelse med et planlagt påbygg bak sameiet 45 Keiser Wilhelms gate (påbygget ble ikke gjennomført). På 70-tallet ble butikken endret til en pelsbutikk, på 80-tallet ble det endret til en sportsbutikk ‘Sportshjørnet’ og på 2000-tallet til ‘Tattoo Norge.no’ som er der idag.

Registreringen fant et maltevegg dekorasjon fra 1904-06 langs inngangen og trapperommet opp til 4. etasje. Det er 6 stk. glassmalerivindu i trapperommet. Leiligheten på 3. etasje har eikepanel i stuen og en tremønsterdør fra 1904-06 (eikepanelene har flyttet i ominnredningsfaser). En 50-talls himling og taklys glass viste seg i 3. etasje av trapperommet. De tidligere dørene fra stuen i 3.etasje ble funnet på loftet med en ovn fra leiligheten på 4. etasje (Disse elementene og flere er videre beskrevet).

Introduksjon og mål

3 stk. vinduslukker og 2 stk. metal-skorsteiner. Utvendige vinduer og dører har grovt pussede paneler under sokkel og bygningen har to stk. balkonger med smijernsrekkverk. Fasaden mot bakgården innholder 6 glassmalerivindusamt flere vanlige glassvindu med 2-3 inndelinger og sprosser. Skorsteinene på taket har blitt erstattet med nye metallversjoner.

Registreringen identifiserte flere innredninger og gjenstander som har historisk verdi. Vernebestemmelser for disse er foreslått på side 8. Anbefalingen er at grunneieren og leietakere i samarbeid med Ålesund kommune, plan og bygningsavdelingen, tar vare på disse elementene og diskuterer fremtidige prosjekter som kan ivareta elementene. Med hensyn til gjenstander som ikke trengs kan Kommunen og Jugendstilsenteret gi råd og hjelp til å etablere kontakt med museer som eventuelt kan overta disse.

Det største funnet i bygningen var en malt veggdekorasjon som viste seg bakenfor et senere malingslag som har begynt å sprekke opp. Det viste seg i inngangen og hovedtrapperom opp til 3. etasje (plankart 2).

Keiser Wilhelms gate 43 har blitt registrert som en del av prosjektet “Brannsikker Jugendby”. Hovedmålet med registreringen er å få en oppdatert forståelse av tilstanden til Ålesund sine historiske bygninger og innholdet deres med hensyn til struktur, innredning og gjenstander. Rapportene vil innholde en beskrivelse av bygningen sett i sammenheng med bygningshistorikk og utvikling. Videre vil rapportene vurdere historiske og arkitektoniske elementer som ble identifisert i undersøkelsen. Vurderingen er basert på kriteria i ‘Omfangsvurdering og utarbeidelse av et registreringssystem for prosjektet Brannsikker Jugendby’ (Ålesund kommune 2012). Feltarbeid/bygningsundersøkelse ble gjennomført mellom 11. og 20. mars 2012.

I kulturminnelovens §1. lovens formål sies følgende;Kulturminner og kulturmiljøer med deres egenart og variasjon skal vernes både som del av vår kulturarv og identitet og som ledd i en helhetlig miljø- og ressursforvaltning.Samt; Det er et nasjonalt ansvar å ivareta disse ressurser som vitenskapelig kildemateriale og som varig grunnlag for nålevende og fremtidige generasjoners opplevelse, selvforståelse, trivsel og virksomhet. (Miljøverndepartementet 1978)

Sentrumsplanen (reguleringsplan for Ålesund sentrum) er utviklet i samsvar med dette, deriblant §18-Kulturhistorisk verdifull bebyggelse.

1. Formålet med reguleringsplanen på dette punkt er å bevare den kulturhistoriske og arkitektoniske verdifulle bebyggelse, samt sikre en gradvis fornyelse og rehabilitering av bebyggelsen slik at strøkets særpreg og helhetlige miljø bevares og videreutvikles.(Ålesund kommune 1986)

Beskrivelse

Bygningen består av 3 etasjer samt loft og kjeller. Utvendige fasader har rosa glattpussing over Ålesundsmur (teglstein og cement). Taket er dekket av lappstein med

THE BLESSED JOHN ROCHE SCHOOL, LONDON.Bellway Homes & Family MosaicDocumentation of a modernist school built in the 1950s. The school was laid out in finger plan which actually belongs to the 1930s. As such the Blessed John Roche School repre-sented the swan-song of this design.

STAVSET SKOLE, HJØRUNDFJORD Hjørundfjord KulturvernlagDocumentation and use strategy for a remote country boarding school. The assessment identified the school as one of two boarding schools resulting from Norway’s Education Act of 1860 as op-posed to the large number of one-room contemporary schools. The use strategy is ongoing and will look to ensure year-round use of the building.

KABELGATEN, (CABLE STREET)Dyrvik Architects, OsloHeritage consultancy for the redevelopment of Standard Cable and Telephone, comprising a complex of factory buildings designed variously by a group of Norway’s most important 20th century architects.

The complex comprises numerous phases, with both complementing and contrasting styles. The architects include Ove Bang, responsible for amongst other buildings, Samfunnshuset in Oslo centre, Magnus Poulsson, who together with Arnstein Arneberg, designed the Oslo Rådhus or City Hall.

The Dyrvik proposal looks retain the distinctive character of the complex, optimising its different aspects and update the complex for future use.

ARTICLEFORT PITTArticle for Fort Magazine, commissioned as a condition of planning for recent works at Fort Pitt, Chatham. The article focuses on the 19th century development of Fort Pitt, which began life as a military fort, but spent most of its working life functioning as a hospital.

To place Fort Pitt in context the article looked at the wider role of defences at Chatham and Rochester, including the Chatham Lines and the development of military defences along the Thames, Medway and North Kent Coast.

THE ROYAL ARSENAL,WOOLWICH, LONDONBerkeley GroupMultiple phases of buildng recording and excavation as part of the on-going documentation and redevelopment of the Arsenal military complex. These phases of work captured a diverse range of dates, architectural styles and building-uses.

The complex has origins in the 16th Century as the property of a Royal courtier and begins its military role with establishing of the Ordnance Storage Depot at Tower Place in 1671.

Together with this a key aspect of the excavations looked at the Woolwich areas’s earlier river deposition and formation, documenting a variety of early foreshore structures.

SPRINGHEAD PUMPING STATIONKINGSTON UPON HULLYorkshire WaterScoping and initial development of a community engagement/use strategy for the pumphouse as part of on-going documentation and restoration.The pumphouse forms a key strategic site for regional provision of water and the listed building has suffered from neglect and vandalism.

As a means of resolving this and protecting the value of restoration, it was determined that returning the building to local community use would reduce its vulnerability to vandalism and secure regular maintenance.

MORTON BAGOT,WARWICKSHIREAM ArchitectureBuliding recording and mitigation strategy for landscaping and ground reduction, for the restoration of a Grade II listed building within a moated manor Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM). This comprised co-working with architects and landscape architects to provide suitable design for both the building and a planting scheme which would protect the SAM.

IRUN GUIPUZCOA, SPAINEuropan Europe entry 2015Heritage advisor to a Norwegian entry to Europan 2015. This year’s project was for the sustainable redevelopment of the historic station building and sidings at Irun.

Key aspects comprised balancing heritage interests with integrating the station into Irun’s local transport network and determining the role of the station as part of the development of it’s locality.

The station buildings comprised a number of phases which had been altered in ways which restricted their use. The central element in resolving this was the architects’ ‘station-loop’ designed to create through-circulation throughout the station. This provided an exciting opportunity for the buildings to gain new uses.

TA BISTRA & GJAHN TUFFIEHA, MALTAHeritage Malta Documentation of the Ta Bistra Roman Catacomb and Gjahn Tuffieha Bathhouse with 3-D Photogrammetry modelling as a basis for condition survey undertaken by David Odgers. The sites will be developed for heritage tourism.

JOHN ROAN SCHOOL, GREENWICH, LONDON, UKThe John Roan FoundationAn illustrated book about the history of this 340 year old school, which was founded in 1670. The book looks at the school’s history across its five sites at Greenwich, the teachers, masters and pupils and its development through the education acts of 1870 and 1944, the World Wars and much more.

ANIMAL CAGES, MARGATE, UKBarton WilmoreBuilding Assessment of animal cages that belong to a zoological garden from the 1800s. The assessment showed that the structures are unique and represent the latest evidence of this tradition. In accordance with the recommendations of our report was protected structures.

DUDLEY ZOO, BEAR PIT, DUDLEY, UK Waterman GroupAssessment of significance and historical context of the Bear Pit at Dudley Zoo, which was designed by Bethold Lubetkin and Tecton Group, of the London Zoo Penguin Enclosure fame.
