Leaguers Who Lunch JoAnn Phipps
LWL met December 10th at Sylvania Country Club. 20 Leaguers enjoyed wonderful food, pleasant conversation and the warm atmosphere of the club's Lounge. It was great to gather in front of an active fireplace on a cold December day and watch snow falling outside. LWL will not meet in January. The location selected for February 11th is Manhattan's Pub and Cheer on Adams Street in Tole-do. Joyce Stenberg will be our February hostess and is working on menu selections. An invitation with menu will be emailed to LWL members in January. See the Leaguers Who Lunch Flyer for more information.
New Member Onboarding Barbara Brown, Chairman
The Pink Book is your key to becoming a Crescendo, an outstanding volunteer who gives her time, talent and effort to The Toledo Sym-phony League. A Crescendo must be actively involved with the Toledo Symphony League for five years. A Crescendo must have been chairman of a large project or had an equal commitment to the League, such as serving on the Executive Committee and/or the General Board or as a committee chairman or other like chairmanship of equal commitment. Details may be found on page 16 of the Pink Book. A list of CRE-SCENDOS is on page 17. The key to tracking your points is on page 18. Crescendo points are submitted to Beth Bowman by each committee or event chairman. Become involved by attending events and volunteering for events and projects. It is rewarding and a wonderful way to support the Toledo Symphony Orchestra while making new friends.
Musician Survival Bags Joyce Stenberg and Helen Patton, Co-Chairs
Seventy-five holiday survival bags were distributed to Tole-do Symphony Orchestra members on Wednesday, Decem-ber 4, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sylvania by TSL members Joyce Stenberg, Pat Donahue, Phyllis Wadley and Helen Patton. A Christmas Greeting expressing appreciation from the League was included in the totes, along with 23 other items donated by members or purchased by the committee using generous monetary contributions to the project. The bags were assembled by many ladies after the General Board Meeting on November 21st. Keith McWatters, TSO percussionist, expressed his gratitude and said that this concert was the first of 21 performances in 20 days to be given in the wider community. Comments from other musicians at St. Joe’s demonstrate the populari-ty of this event: “We look forward to this every year.” “So nice of you to do this.” “Greatly appreciated.” “Since the first time, I have kept every bag.” “This makes us so happy.” Look on our Facebook page for photos. Many thanks to all TSL members who supported and helped with this worthwhile endeavor.

Young Artist Competition Winners To Perform in a New Venue and a New Program with TSO The three talented young artists below, all area Toledoans, will perform in a concert entitled "Introducing the Orchestra" with the TSO at St. John XXIII Church at 7:00 p.m. on January 24, 2020.
Loa Cho Loa Cho, a 16-year-old senior at Maumee Valley Country Day School, has been playing cello for 10 years. She has been performing at various institutes including Cellofest in London, Young Artists Program at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, the National Cello Institute in LA, Indiana University's Summer String Academy, and Meadowmount School of Music. Loa was one of the winners of the Cleveland Cello Society Competition, MTNA's Buckeye Audition, and Toledo Symphony’s Director’s Award. An avid chamber music performer, she has been featured in live performances on WGTE and WTOL. Loa considers being a founder, organizer, leader, and cellist of the Toledo Symphony Youth Ensemble (2017) as one of her most important musical activities. The group has performed at nursing homes, shopping malls, hospitals, churches, and parks, and assisted in TSSM and TSO with children's events. Her previous teachers include Renee
Goubeaux, René Schiffer, Horacio Contreras, Alan Smith, and Julia Lichten. She currently studies with Amir Eldan. Her free time priority goes to writing in her journal, dancing like crazy, and riding horses. Planning to study music in college, Loa is also interested in psychology and linguistics. She does not know what path she will follow yet, but wants to do something to make the world a better place. "I would like to express my gratitude to Toledo Symphony League and the TSO for giving me a chance to perform with TSO. The first movement of my piece, Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1, expresses the distress and anxiety of the composer in his time through beautifully webbed orchestral timbre and articulation. I have performed at various educational venues, but performing with the symphony in a professional setting gives more meaning to my practice, and I am very excited about it. I hope this event inspires people and brings more serious and talented, young musicians to Toledo."
Julia Masiker
Bassoonist, Julia Masiker is currently a junior at Toledo School for the Arts where she is a member of their Studio Winds group and Chamber Winds Ensemble. Julia began her study of the bassoon when she was 13, took lessons from Pamela Kazmierzcak until her freshman year, and then began her study with Casey Gsell, principal bassoonist with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. Now in her second year as principal bassoonist with the Toledo Symphony Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Julia has been playing the instrument for three years. She studies privately with Gsell and enjoys performing both solos and with group ensembles. She has played various band and orchestra concerts with school bands. She is the principal bassoonist with the University of Toledo Symphony Orchestra, and will play in the Ohio Music Education Association All State Orchestra, where she has won the highest rating for all of her district solo and ensemble contests. Julia has also attended bassoon education camps at Interlochen and Bowling Green State University. In 2018, she was chosen for the Toledo Symphony's Music Director Scholarship. This year, Julia is acting as principal bassoon with the University of Toledo Symphony Orchestra for their Planets concert and will be performing a solo with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra in Bryan, Ohio, as part of their holiday concert series. Having decided against majoring in music in college, Julia plans to play in the orchestra of the university of her choice and would like to play gigs with other musicians when she is older. Julia will play Concertino in E-Flat Major, Op. 4 by Ferdinand David. "I am honored to have been selected as a ‘Young Artist Competition’ winner. I know how hard this competition is to win. I also am so excited to share the piece I have prepared. I love this concertino so much; there are so many different colors and characters that shine through during the course of this selection."
Owen Robinson
A student at Sylvania Southview High School, Owen began his study of the saxophone with Timothy Hoffman his freshman year. Study with his current teacher, Shannon Ford, Professor of Saxophone at the University of Toledo, began January 2019. He credits Professor Ford for being "the most influential and helpful mentor" who has prepared him for both the Young Artist Competition and for his studies in college. Owen has attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for multiple years, where he was able to cultivate skills as a principal player. He also toured Europe as First Chair alto saxophone with the Blue Lake Northern Winds. Having received superior ratings on the works of Glazunov, Corigliano, and other composers, Owen was selected this year as one of two students in Ohio to play tenor saxophone in the OMEA All State Jazz Band. He has performed at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp as First Chair alto saxophone in the top-level wind ensemble
as well as Second Chair in the same ensemble the prior year. Additionally, he has performed with the OMEA District Honors Band as First Chair alto saxophone, Second Chair alto saxophone, and First Chair baritone saxophone. In addition, Owen is the Principal Clarinetist of the TSYO Symphonic Orchestra, the saxophone section leader at Southview High School, and a member of the Tri-M Music Honors Society. During the 2019-20 academic year, he is auditioning for several major saxophone university studios and is planning to begin work on a degree in saxophone performance next year. His ultimate goal is to become a music professor and head a well-regarded saxophone studio at a large state university. Owen will be playing Alexander Glazunov's Concerto for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra in E Flat Major Op. 109. Offering background for the selection, he tells us that Glasunov, who wrote the concerto in 1934 and possibly never heard it performed, with this composition helped secure the saxophone as a legitimate classical and orchestral instrument. He notes that he is delighted to perform alongside YAC "stellar musicians, Mss. Cho and Masiker. This competition is an important victory and honor for all three of us. I would also like to thank The Toledo Symphony League for giving me the opportunity to make my debut as a soloist. This is a fantastic beginning to my musical career."
