to audition for the position of Principal Contrabass.

-Vanhal, J.B.: Contrabass Concerto in D major, bars 18-83, the 1st mov. (Trumpf

edition published by Hofmeister) with Cadenza (Gruber edition) with piano

accompaniment. For orchestra tuning, tune in C major. You may inquire for the sheet

music of the accompaniment;

-Schubert: Arpeggione Sonata in A minor, the 1st mov. without repetitions. (your

preferred edition)

For orchestra tuning, tune in G minor. Notes too low to play should be performed one

octave higher. You may inquire for the sheet music of the accompaniment.

Orchestral study: from Orchester Probespiel published by Schott.

Mozart: Symphony No.40, 1st mov, pp.22-23;

Beethoven: Symphony No.5, 3rd mov, pp.12-13 (without repetitions).

(2) Instruction on the DVD-R

-The video must be made on a DVD-R playable on a general Japanese DVD player in

the order of the works indicated above. Make sure the DVD-R is playable before

sending it to us. (Use a common format such as AVI, M4V, MP4, MOV, MPG, or

WMV for video.)

-Label the disc with the Applicant’s name.

-The recording should consist of your performance only. Do not include any speaking,

such as indicating your name or the titles of the works.

-Record all the excerpts at one time without stopping the recorder. No editing of the

recording is accepted.

(You are allowed to have a break of about 1 minute between excerpts while the video is

still continuing.)

After consideration and screening of the documents submitted, we will send out the

result by postal mail on June 5, 2018, Tuesday. In case you do not receive it, please

contact with our office.

Second Audition: Live Audition-1 Date: July 7, 2018, Saturday, after 3 p.m.

Place: Tokyo Opera City, the 1st basement floor, Large Rehearsal Room

Assigned Work:

-Vanhal and Schubert: The same as the video audition, but you will be requested to

perform WITHOUT an accompanist for this first live audition.

-Orchestral study: Details to be announced to successful applicants of the video audition.

Third Audition: Live Audition-2

Date: July 15, 2018, Sunday, early evening or later

Place: Tokyo Opera City, the 1st basement floor, Recital Hall

Assigned Work:

-Vanhal: The same as the video audition, and you will be requested to perform WITH

an accompanist for this second live audition.

-Orchestral study & ensemble music: Details to be announced to successful applicants

of the Second Audition: Live Audition-1.

NOTES:

Accompanist: Applicants are expected to bring his/her own piano accompanist for the

live auditions.

Trial period: The successful applicant will be given an 11 month trial period with the

Orchestra before a final decision about an official position is made.

Terms and Conditions will be determined, based on the Tokyo Philharmonic

Orchestra’s regulations.

The orchestra will not return any documents and materials submitted by applicants.

NB: Please refer to the privacy policy section of our website.

Tokyo Philharmonic will not answer to inquiries on the content of the

screening/audition.

Applicants are responsible for all costs (e.g. traveling, etc.) pertaining to the audition.
