We have come to the end of the 2014 national elections which mark the country’s c e l e b r a t i o n of 20 years of democracy. This was a milestone for South Africa’s

young democracy. The election

presented a great opportunity for the born frees to cast their vote for the first time. The citizens of the country continue to put their faith in the African National Congress (ANC) to lead the country again. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the country for making a mark and the political parties that made it through to the elections. Halala! ANC for again winning the elections, however they have a big task ahead of them in making sure that they deliver all the services that are a concern to the citizens.Immediately before the elections, we witnesses the municipality delivering services to the community namely ; a new Tamaho clinic was officially opened and a drive-through motor vehicle license facility was also unveiled in Katlehong , 912 brick and mortar toilets structures were launched in Zonkizizwe. The elections are over now and the results are out, the citizens are eagerly waiting to see the parliamentary and provincial leaders that the political parties are going to nominate. Enough with politics , lastly I would like to applaud Mamelodi Sundowns for repaying the investment done by Patrice Motsepe by winning the Premier Soccer League after seven years. Well done Pisto Mosimane, the coach for uplifting the spirit of your fans. Cheers for now.

Kathorus motorists will no longer have to drive to nearby suburbs to renew their motor vehicle licenses. Mondli Gungubele, Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, officially opened a drive –through motor vehicle licensing facility in Katlehong 1 Customer Care Centre recently. The other two drive-through motor vehicle licensing facilities were opened in Duduza Customer Care Centre and Kwa Thema Customer Care Centre. They will be providing motor vehicle license disc renewal and inquiries.Speaking to tame TIMES, Mondli Gungubele; Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni said, “According to the ANC manifesto of 2011 we are to build service infrastructure and broaden access to it and we are implementing that mandate. This facility is also part of bringing services closer to the communities, and to promote social empowerment. It can serve many people in any space of time, reduces transport cost and it’s accessible to the community.” Themba Rampai, Councillor Ward 51 said, “The new facility is a big step forward for the community and making a difference by bringing services closer to people. It is a big relief to people, taking into consideration the financial constraints of travelling to nearby suburbs to renew a motor vehicle license.” Meanwhile, Teboho Ncheki, Katlehong Customer Care Centre Manager said, “It is exciting for the community to renew their motor vehicles license at their door steps. The system is quick, efficient, innovative, and user friendly as it accepts card payments.”

Township choral music has been experiencing a decline in the past years; local youngsters are now in favour of house, hip hop and Kwaito music genres. The demise of the heritage choral music motivated three township choral music conductors namely, Bongani Mdiya, Sibusiso Khumalo and Tiisetso Radebe to embark on a crusade to revive this music through hosting of a choral music competition at Khehlekile Primary School in Thokoza. Khehlekile and Mkhathizwe Primary School competed against each other in the school choral music festival. “This event is now two years old and it continues to grow. Currently, we are busy trying to include the third school namely, Semunye Primary School. The objective of the competition is to recruit talented artists so that they set up a Kathorus Youth Choral Music,” said Sibusiso Khumalo. He said they want their choral music choir to follow in the great footsteps of Joyous Celebration and Soweto Gospel Choir. Khumalo added that they intend to rope in more local schools so that they can identify raw township talented singers. He said they started the competition at a lower primary school level and at a later stage they will be roping in higher and secondary schools. Khumalo said choral music enforces discipline and best choral singers stand a better chance of winning music bursary. Meanwhile, Khehlekile Primary School principal, Tiisetso Radebe said this choral music competition is helping to establish the school identity. “The school choral music competition is instrumental in building a child’s self esteem. I will be talking to local school principals to embrace this competition. We are optimistic with the talent Thokoza is blessed with, the formation of Kathorus Music Choir will become a reality,” said Radebe.

Revival of choral music on the cards

Khehlekile and Mkhathizwe Primary School choirs together with their musical conductors gave a five star performance at before the audience.

The Maskandi music has often been associated with the rural people, but now the Thokoza folks Izintombi Zakwa- Nongoma musical group are reclaiming and refreshing this ancient music legacy which stood the test of time. According to the Izintombi Zakwa-Nongoma group leader, Ayanda Nxumalo, their new Maskandi album titled Izintombi Zakwa-Nongoma, is ruffling feathers within the Maskandi music circle. He said the group have been receiving enough airplay at Thetha FM. “The album consists of 10 Maskandi hit tracks which suits the music lover. The leading track that is taken from the album is called Sengithathiwe which talks much about love. Other beautiful tracks featured on this album include Singabantu, Emkhumbane and Giya. Most of the songs featured on this album speaks about positive and negative life experiences,” explained Nxumalo. This music group is now two years old and this is their first recorded album. The group consists of five members, namely, Kulekani Ndlovu, Sne Mhlungu, Nokwazi Masondo, Jabu Sthole and Ayanda Nxumalo. All members are based in Thokoza Township. Izintombi

“International Nurses Day means a lot to me. I’m proud to be a nurse. Nurses are not as bad as many people make us out to be. We are still passionate about our profession. It is a great thing that there is a day dedicated to this noble profession. Seeing a patient progress from critical stage of illness or injury, through to rehabilitation stage, gives me a great satisfaction,” said, Eunice Mosepeli, Natalspruit Hospital professional nurse during the commemoration of the International Nurses Day.

International Nurses’ Day is celebrated annually on May 12, the anniversary of the founder of modern day nursing, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. The theme for 2014 was Nurses: A Force for Change – A vital resource for health. Priscilla Tyobeka, another professional nurse said, “International Nurses Day is a day for us to take pride in ourselves and our profession. This day acknowledges the importance of this profession. Nursing is a calling, unlike any other profession. To do what nurses do it needs need passion and

compassion. In the hospital we deliver health holistically, meaning we look at patient’s health spiritually, emotionally and psychology.”Vusumuzi Maphalala, who is serving his community service at the Nataspruit Hospital, added, “International Nurses Day shows that we are appreciated as nurses and that the job we do is important. It is a challenging profession, but I would not trade it for anything else in the world. Even though, I am not a fully qualified nurse as yet, because I am still serving my community service I can see the difference that the nurses are making in the community.”

Eight primary schools soccer teams are still to book their place in the Danone Ekurhuleni South District finals. According to Danone Ekurhuleni South District coordinator, Thulas Sibeko, by Thursday all eight teams would have booked their respective places in the finals. “The draw for the qualifying eight teams will be done today (15 May) at Ukhanyiso Primary School at Katlehong, Ncala Section. Danone Ekurhuleni South District final will be played tomorrow (16 May) at Eden Park Stadium. The overall winning school soccer team will be qualified to play in the Danone inter district level,” said Sibeko. The venue is still to be confirmed for the inter district final. However,

schools soccer teams are still to battle it out to book their respective places. Sibeko greatest wish is that primary schools would start embracing and taking part in large numbers in the tournament. Danone Cup is the biggest school soccer tournament played by schools both nationally and internationally.“Champions of their respective countries stand a greater chance of playing on the international stage. They also get a rare opportunity of shaking hands with Zinadin Zidan, one of the world greatest soccer legends of all times. Zidan is also a Danone Cup ambassador,” concluded Sibeko.
