January is Tamil Heritage Month

On June 12, 2012, the Legisla ve Assembly of Ontario had its first reading of Bill 111, an Act to proclaim the month of January Tamil Heritage Month. People of Tamil heritage have migrated to Ontario since the 1940s. Tamil Canadians have overcome obstacles while mak-ing significant contribu ons to Ontario’s social, economic, poli cal and cultural tapestry. Tamil Heritage Month presents an opportunity to reinforce the important history and con-tribu ons of Canadians of Tamil heritage. The month of January was chosen because the first month of the Tamil calendar – Thai begins in January. This month is also significant as Tamil Canadians recognize many cultural and ar s c observances including the Tamil Har-vest Fes val – Thai Pongal.

January 15 - Mar n Luther King Day

The idea of Mar n Luther King, Jr. Day as a holiday was promoted by labor unions in con-tract nego a ons. A er King's death, U.S. Representa ve John Conyers and U.S. Senator Edward Brooke introduced a bill in Congress to make King's birthday a na onal holiday. The bill first came to a vote in the U.S. House of Representa ves in 1979. However, it fell five votes short of the number needed for passage. Two of the main arguments men oned by opponents were that a paid holiday for federal employees would be too expensive, and that a holiday to honor a private ci zen would be contrary to longstanding tradi on (King had never held public office). Only two other figures have na onal holidays in the U.S. hon-oring them: George Washington and Christopher Columbus.

January 21 – Lincoln Alexander Day (Canada)
