First ever Men’s Walk marks one giant leap for Hospiscare

How far would you be prepared to walk for a pint, a delicious pasty and a delightful fun-filled day out?

Well, on Saturday March 17th, over 600 men were enticed outdoors by the prospect of all three of these things for the first ever Hospiscare Men’s Walk. The result was a triumphant success raising funds a plenty for Hospiscare and providing a superb fun day out for all.

Starting and finishing at Sandy Park, the celebrated home of the Exeter Chiefs, the circular route included Ludwell Valley and other parks along the way. After completing the 10k route, the men returned to watch the Six Nations England vs Ireland match on the big screens.

The Corporate Cup was won by Michelmores who have raised over £5k in memory of their colleague Ned Strouts.

The team prize goes to the Lee’s Ramblers who were dressed up as the Village People! Thank you to Le-Roy Funeral Services for donating the prize of Gold Card tickets to the Exeter vs London Irish match.

The individual who won the prize for raising the most was Brian Waldron who raised £1,000!


The cloudy conditions and some light drizzle did not dampen the walkers’ spirits. The prospect of a hot tasty pasty, a pint and an afternoon of first class rugby spurred them on.

Louise Beeken, Hospiscare fundraiser and one of the event’s organisers, said “As this was our first men-only walk we didn’t know exactly how popular it was going to be but it has exceeded all of our expectations.”

“I just want to thank everyone who took part, volunteered or sponsored this event!”

The South West Communications sponsored walk is set to raise over £50,000 for local patients and families.

After raising in excess of £100,000 for Hospiscare over the last three years, leading West Country solicitors Michelmores have once again gone the extra mile in support of the much respected local charity.

The Michelmores team raised over £5,000 for Hospiscare when they took part in the first Hospiscare Men's Walk which started and finished at Sandy Park, the home of the Exeter Chiefs.

The team, which comprised Tom Stenner-Evans, Andrew Lovell, Richard Cobb, Phillip and David Maddick, James Bartlett, Robert Coram, Ben Howels and Adrian Miller became the first to be presented with the Men's Walk Cup for raising the most for the charity.

The funds were largely raised from colleagues, clients and contacts of the firm in memory of Adrian Miller’s brother-in-law, Ned Strouts, who died

shortly before Christmas.

“Ned was only a few years older than me and had only just started his well-earned retirement when he was diagnosed,” said Adrian.

“The support from Hospiscare for him and for his family was consistently fabulous and enabled him to be at home and well cared for until the end.

“It was our pleasure, as well as great fun, to raise money to help Hospiscare continue its brilliant work.”

Hospiscare fundraiser Jen Waldron, who was also one of the organisers, said she was delighted with the corporate turnout. “The money is still coming in but I would like to thank Michelmores for their contribution and success.”

As a former nurse Emmie knows all about looking after people. However, she says the care she receives at our day centre in Exeter is second to none.

Emmie has fibrosis of the lungs as a result of radiation treatment that went wrong 15 years ago. She needs to be attached to an oxygen machine 24-hours-a-day which means she finds it difficult to leave her house. Even simple tasks leave her breathless and her condition is worsening all the time.

Emmie is transported each week by ambulance to our day care centre and says it is her only escape.

“The journey is a joy,” she said.“It is so nice to be driven so that you can look at the countryside around you. It is something I look forward to so much.”

Emmie was referred to Hospiscare by her GP and said at first she had major reservations.

She added: “When my doctor first suggested I come here I was shocked because I automatically associated Hospiscare with cancer. “

“A nurse then came to see me but I wouldn’t come, for the simple reason that my son died of cancer at the age of 34 and was cared for in a hospice.”

“She spoke to me again and I still didn’t want to come but eventually I agreed.”

Emmie said that despite her reservations, she has not looked back since.

“I must admit I was scared and anxious the first time I came in but everyone has been so lovely,” she said. “You are always greeted with a smile and everybody cares, they really do and can’t do enough for you.”

“I spend nearly the whole day in the craft room chatting to the other patients. You all know each other and it’s like a little coffee morning with a bit extra thrown in.”

The craft room is just one of a range of services on offer including, hairdressing, reflexology, massages, and manicures alongside clinical consultations and medical support.

Patients are also treated to a hot lunch, prepared by our kitchen team, as well as afternoon tea and cakes.

Emmie said she hoped her story would encourage more people to donate to Hospiscare.

She added: “Being here I can see that every penny counts and even £10 will make a difference to someone.”

For those of us living in the South West of England and in particular Devon with its diverse climatic conditions, we are very fortunate to have so many different styles of gardens to visit.

On Friday 30th March 2012 a memorial golf day was held at Okehampton Golf Club in honour of their past captain and president John Spry. John, who lived at Northlew for all his life, first became interested in golf over 40 years ago and played a highly influential role at the golf club and within the local community.

Rachel Spry, John’s granddaughter, organised the day and commented that “we were overwhelmed with support, from both sponsors and entrants”.

Owners taking part in this special Open Garden season for Hospiscare’s 30th anniversary year have created in some places naturalistic gardens whilst others have made wonderful ornamental gardens – all offering an excellent day out for those of us who really enjoy garden visits. The programme also includes the garden at the new Mid Devon Pine Lodge Centre opening its doors on Saturday 21st July and the Jubilee Jazz Picnic in June.

Rachel and family were thrilled to have McCarthy and Stone sponsor the main event and would like to extend their thanks to them and to all of the hole sponsors who provided a wealth of support. Additionally, they would also like to thank everyone who donated prizes and helped with the preparation and running of the day.

With some having already opened their gates, the Open Gardens season is in full swing with some of

local companies. Winners of the competition were Paul Rattenbury, Jerry Lock, Dean Rice and Lloyd Chapman with 89 points and were presented with prizes which were kindly donated by local companies.The winners of the ‘nearest the pin’ competitions were Harry Hawking, Lee Pengelly, Peter Lacey, Rod Wright and Ted Boswell.

Rachel explained that “Hospiscare is a charity very close to our family’s heart and they provided continual invaluable support for my granddad and the family during his illness. They are a fantastic charity and

such a worthy cause. I really cannot thank everyone enough, both the staff and volunteers from Hospiscare and everyone who helped to make the event such a success”.

The golf day raised £4890.08 for Hospiscare.

Memorial Golf day success


Bereavement volunteers:Caring for families during bereavement is an important aspect of our service. Volunteers receive in-depth training to join our team of bereavement volunteers who facilitate families and children effectively.

Volunteers needed

Drivers needed:Could you spare a couple of hours a week to help transport Hospiscare patients to/from day care and hospital appointments? Do you have a valid driving license and your own car or are willing to be trained to drive our Disabled Passenger Vehicle? All travel expenses reimbursed.

Homecare volunteers required:

Volunteer support in patient’s homes is hugely valuable.

Homecare volunteers are willing to be called in to help with

social and practical needs as they arise and can be asked to

help with the following tasks; befriending, sitting, ironing, light

gardening and weeding, dog walking and outings. All travel

expenses reimbursed.

We are looking for friendly, flexible, reliable people who can keep confidential information to help us at Hospiscare.

Hospiscare is asking participants to dress head to toe in 80s clobber for the fundraising evenings. For the first time this year, girls aged 12-15 can register to walk as long as they have parental consent and are accompanied by an adult on the night.

Hospiscare Events and Community Fundraising Manager Louise Beeken said: “More than 800 women took part in each walk last year, raising more than £130,000. There is always a fantastic atmosphere and we are hoping the 80s fancy dress theme will add an extra sense of fun.”

The walks, which take place in Exmouth on May 19 and Tiverton on July 14, are sponsored by Palmers Whitton & Laing.

They both start at the towns’ rugby clubs and take in a 7.5-mile circular route.

Registration for the Tiverton walk is open until 8th July. Everyone taking part receives a souvenir t-shirt and is being encouraged to raise as much money as they can through sponsorship.

Men don’t need to feel left out either as the charity is always on the look-out for marshals to help guide the walkers.

A recipe for successNew course offers to teach the cooking basics

Everyone loves and needs to eat. But cooking itself is not always easy. Many of us find it hard to construct the most basic meals even at the best of times.

The problem is magnified during times of bereavement or when spouses are poorly. Even today, many families find that having had meals cooked for them over many years by one particular person, they have never learnt how to cook themselves. Here at Hospiscare, we have found that many end up eating processed meals or junk food instead.

Happily, Hospiscare has the answer! A new cookery course we are running will teach basic cookery skills to ensure that it is not only our patients who are eating healthily! The course is open to anyone, and starts with basic hints and tips to make exciting yet easy and healthy food.

So put away your processed foods and takeaways, and join us in learning how to make everything from a basic gravy to a roast pork steak in apple and sage sauce.

The only cost is a donation to cover the cost of the food provided on the course.

With some of our patients requiring puréed foods and other specialist diets, we also will be running a special purée course.

Again open to anyone, it covers everything from what equipment to buy, different styles of purées and hints and tips on how to make them incredibly yummy.

Braised Pork Steak with Apple GravyIngredients1 Pork steak per person,Bisto roasted gravy granules,½ onion chopped, 1 small apple chopped,Salt, pepper and sage (optional),2 tsp oil for frying

1. Season pork steak with salt and pepper on both sides.2. Put pan onto heat, and when hot, fry pork until sealed and coloured on both sides.3. Remove from the pan and put into baking dish.4. Add a little oil to the pan and add chopped onion, frying them until they are soft.5. Add chopped apple and fry until golden.6. Make up gravy as packet instructs.7. Add gravy to onion and apple; bring to the boil and season to taste with salt, pepper and sage.8. Pour gravy over pork steak and cover with foil.9. Place in oven, which has been preheated to gas mark 5 or 190°c, for 35-40 minutes until pork is tender.

Tips: For the gravy, replace half the water with apple juice for a lovely flavour. You could replace half the oil with a nugget of butter to enrich the taste.For a creamier texture, add 2tbs of double cream.

Will Week 14th - 18th May 2012Frequently asked questionsQ What is Will Week?

It’s an opportunity for you to make your Will or get your existing Will up to date. Over 30 local solicitors are supporting Hospiscare Will Week by giving their time free to write or update a standard Will so you can make a donation to Hospiscare instead.

Q Isn’t a Will difficult to sort out?

It’s easier to make a Will than you might think. Your solicitor will help you express your wishes clearly and guide you through the simple process.

Q What is the suggested donation?

As a guide we suggest £80 for a single Will, £120 for mirror wills (for couples with similar wishes) and £45 for a codicil (a change to an existing Will). Please respect your solicitor’s generosity by donating an amount that reflects their time and expertise.

Q How do I book?

You can book simply by choosing a participating solicitor from the list and make an appointment where you can talk about the options available. In the unlikely event that your Will is more complicated, your solicitor will discuss any different financial arrangements that may be required.

Q Can I leave a gift to Hospiscare?

If, having reviewed your personal circumstances, you decide you would like to leave a gift to Hospiscare in your Will, thank you. Your solicitor will be able to arrange this for you. There’s no obligation to do so and your arrangements are private.

A new Enterprise Centre is opening soon thanks to a major donation by Alcoa Howmet’s global charity Alcoa Foundation which has a factory on the city’s Sowton Industrial Estate.

The donation will enable Hospiscare to launch the Social Enterprise Scheme, which will raise much-needed funds.

Helen Hutter, Hospiscare’s Head of Retail, said: “Staff at the centre will sort through the items and identify those that can be reused, recycled or refurbished. We are planning to reuse/recycle 95 per cent of the donated items with the rest being disposed of appropriately.”

After Chris Coppell passed away in July 2011, many of her family and friends pulled together to organise an event to remember her.

The team, made up of friends and family, will be attempting to cycle over 40 miles a day through the summer heat to raise as much as possible for a cause close to their hearts.

Chris Coppell spent her final week at Hospiscare in Exeter. Overwhelmed by the high level of care, kindness, sympathy and support they received, Chris asked her family to do all they could to raise as many funds as possible for the hospice in her memory, so that others may continue to benefit from the same care, attention and consideration which they had recieved.

The charity cycling challenge around the coasts of Southen England and Northern France will be a very personal tribute to Chris’ life, with friends in France being included in the event. Using a mixture of a previous charity cycle team name,

A partnership between the University of Exeter and Hospiscare has been formed to help raise funds for Hospiscare.

The University, through this partnership, will be able to increase what it can recycle, reuse and safely dispose of, while Hospiscare will be able to profit from the pre-loved donations. The exciting agreement will also see pop-up Hospiscare stalls and recycling bins, for phones, books, CDs and more, around the campuses.

Already Hospiscare has benefited through recycling old shelves and furniture for their new processing centre, and the University will cut down on the waste they create. Set to last for at least three years, this will help to continue care across Exeter, east and mid Devon, but will also cut down on the resources used up and the amount wastefully sent to the tip.

an amalgamation of Chris’ name, a French cycling term and the Roman name for Exeter, the “Chriscappeloton” team name was born.

Starting on the 2nd July and finishing on the 9th July, the route will take the team of eight, with ages ranging from their 30’s to their 60’s, through Exeter, Portsmouth, Cherbourg, Roscoff and Plymouth. The 800 mile journey, that will push them all to cycle over 40 miles a day, starts at the family home in Bridport and finishes at Aylesbeare Common.

University partnership formed

Fundraisers hit the right note when they raised £8,010 for Hospiscare.

Vocalists from Voice Worx and The Wyndham Singers generated the impressive sum of money by staging concerts and performing carols in Kentisbeare.

Duggie Pinn, from the Wyndham Singers and Heather Lamport from Voice Worx, presented the cash to Hospiscare trustee Nick Agg-Manning at the Wyndham Arms in Kentisbeare.

Nick said: “The amount these two groups raised is quite sensational and I cannot thank them enough for their efforts.”


The annual calendar competition was a resounding success with over 200 entries!

The 12 photos choosen by local Express and Echo readers will appear in the Hospiscare’s 2013 calendar.

“I really am delighted my photo is going to be on the Hospiscare calendar,” said run away winner Pauline Howe. “The motivation for me to rally family, friends, neighbours etc to vote for my photo, was due to the fact that sadly, both of my parents were affected by cancer & the thought of having my photo on the calendar, gave me great pleasure.”

“I look forward to buying the calendar when it is out to give to family and friends.”

The final photos include misty snaps to beautifully clear days on Exmouth beach.

Hospiscare would not be celebrating its 30th Anniversary without the amazing support of the communities and companies in the areas which it covers.

BBC reporter and TV detective novelist Simon Hall has rewritten one of his famous book for the stage.

For the first time one of his books was performed on stage all for Hospiscare! Shown at the Barnfield Theatre, and rehearsed at the hospice, ‘An unnessary murder’ was a success.

Congratulations and thanks must be said to everyone involved in putting on the performance. A special thank you also must go to Wetherspoons, Bailey Partnership, Thomson Jenner, South West Water, Meridian Business Support and Zebra Design for their support.

Exeter’s Chamber of Commerce members were surprised with a trading based competition at their March meeting.

All the members were given a bottle of Frobisher’s juice and given the task to trade up the item. Once they had traded up as much as possible, they would then auction off the item to raise as money for their local hospice, Hospiscare.
