WORD OF THE ‘LIVING FATHER’
The Eucharist is given to us as a challenge and a promise. That's how Jesus presents it in today's Gospel.
He doesn't make it easy for those who hear Him. They are repulsed and offended at His words. Even when they begin to quarrel, He insists on describing the eating and drinking of His flesh and blood in starkly literal terms.
Four times in today's reading, Jesus uses a Greek word—trogein—that refers to a crude kind of eating, almost a gnawing or chewing (see John 6:54,56,57,58).
He is testing their faith in His Word, as today's First Reading describes God testing Israel in the desert.
The heavenly manna was not given to satisfy the Israelites' hunger, as Moses explains. It was given to show them that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
In today's Psalm, too, we see a connection between God's Word and the bread of life. We sing of God filling us with "finest wheat" and proclaiming his Word to the world.
In Jesus, "the living Father" has given us His Word come down from heaven, made flesh for the life of the world.
Yet as the Israelites grumbled in the desert, many in today's Gospel cannot accept that Word. Even many of Jesus' own followers abandon Him after this discourse (see John 6:66).
But His words are Spirit and life, the words of eternal life (see John 6:63,67).
In the Eucharist we are made one flesh with Christ. We have His life in us and have our life because of Him. This is what Paul means in today's Epistle when He calls the Eucharist a "participation" in Christ's body and blood. We become in this sacrament partakers of the divine nature (see 1 Peter 2:4).
This is the mystery of the faith that Jesus asks us believe.
And He gives us His promise: that sharing in His flesh and blood that was raised from the dead, we too will be raised up on the last day.

1382 The Mass is at the same time, and inseparably, the sacrificial memorial in which the sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated and the sacred banquet of communion with the Lord's body and blood. But the celebration of the Eucharistic sacrifice is wholly directed toward the intimate union of the faithful with Christ through communion. To receive communion is to receive Christ himself who has offered himself for us.

La Eucaristía nos es dada como desafío y promesa. Así nos la presenta Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy.
Él no le facilita las cosas a quienes lo escuchan. Sus palabras provocan repugnancia en ellos y se sienten ofendidos con sus palabras. Incluso cuando empiezan a discrepar, Él insiste en describir con expresiones gráficas ese comer de su cuerpo y beber de su sangre.
En la lectura de hoy, Jesús utiliza cuatro veces la palabra griega trogein, que se refiere a una cruda manera de comer, semejante a roer o masticar (cf. Jn 6,54.56.57.58) Está probando su fe en su Palabra, como Dios probó la fe de Israel en el desierto, según lo que describe la primera lectura de este día.
El maná celestial no se le dio a los israelitas para satisfacer su hambre, como explica Moisés. Sino para mostrarles que no sólo de pan vive el hombre, sino de toda palabra que vie-ne de la boca de Dios.
También en el salmo de hoy vemos una conexión entre la Palabra de Dios y el pan de vida. Cantamos que Dios nos llena con “flor de harina” y proclamamos al mundo su Palabra.
En Jesús, el “Padre que vive” nos ha dado su Palabra que ha bajado del cielo y se ha hecho carne para la vida del mundo
Sin embargo, así como los israelitas murmuraron en el desierto, muchos no aceptan esa Palabra en el Evangelio de hoy. Incluso varios de los mismos seguidores de Jesús lo abandonan después de este discurso (cf. Jn 6,66). Pero sus palabras son Espíritu y vida, son palabras de vida eterna (cf. Jn 6,63.67).
En la Eucaristía somos hechos una carne con Cristo. Tenemos su vida en nosotros y vivimos por Él. Eso es lo que Pablo quiere decir en la epístola de hoy, cuando le llama a la Eucaristía “participación” en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. En este sacramento somos partícipes de la naturaleza divina (cf. 1 P 2,4).
Ese es el misterio de la fe que Jesús nos pide creer. Y nos hace su promesa: que si compartimos el Cuerpo y la Sangre resucitados, también nosotros seremos resucitados el último día.
CATECISMO DE LA IGLESIA CATOLICA 1382 La misa es, a la vez e inseparablemente, el memorial sacrificial en que se perpetúa el sacrificio de la cruz, y el banquete sagra-
do de la comunión en el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor. Pero la celebración del sacrificio eucarístico está totalmente orientada hacia la unión íntima de los fieles con Cristo por medio de la comunión. Comulgar es recibir a Cristo mismo que se ofrece por nosotros.

given dignity of all. For our brothers and sisters around the world, We pray for shared solidarity. For public officials and decisionmakers, We pray for wisdom and guidance. VIDA Y DIGNIDAD DE LA PERSONA La Iglesia Católica proclama que la vida humana es sagrada y que la dignidad de la persona es la base de una visión moral para la sociedad. Este es el funda-mento de todos los principios de nuestra doctrina social. En nuestra sociedad, el derecho fundamental
e inalienable a la vida se ve amenazado por el aborto provocado, el suicidio asistido, la clonación humana, la ingeniería genética y por la aplicación de la pena de muerte. El atentar conscientemente contra la vida de la población civil incluyendo en caso de guerra o conflicto armado siempre es un mal. La doctrina católica nos llama siempre a hacer todo lo posible para evitar una guerra. Las naciones deben proteger el derecho a la vida mediante la búsqueda de medios eficaces para evitar conflictos y resolverlos por medios pacíficos. Creemos que toda persona tiene un valor inestimable, que las personas son más importantes que las cosas y que la medida de cada institución se basa en si amenaza o mejora la vida y la dignidad de la persona humana.
LLAMADO A LA FAMILIA, A LA COMUNIDAD Y A LA PARTICIPACIÓN En una cultura global dirigida por un individual-ismo excesivo, nuestra tradición proclama no solo que la vida de la persona humana es sagrada, sino que el ser humano es eminentemente social. La
manera en que organizamos nuestra sociedad—en lo económico y lo político, en leyes y normas—afecta directamente la dignidad humana y la capacidad de los individuos para crecer en comunidad. El matrimonio y la familia son las instituciones centrales de la sociedad y estas deben ser apoyadas y no minadas. La tradición católica enseña la importancia fundamental de la comunidad para el crecimiento, la realización y plenitud del ser humano. Creemos que todas las personas tienen el derecho y el deber de participar en la sociedad buscando juntas el bien común y el bienestar para todos, especialmente para los pobres y vulnerables.
OPCIÓN POR LOS POBRES Y VULNERABLES La medida básica de los valores de una comunidad o sociedad es el trato que le da a sus miembros más vulnerables. En un mundo marcado por divisiones cada
vez más agudas entre ricos y pobres, nuestra tradición recuerda la historia del Juicio Final (Mt. 25,31) y nos enseña a preocuparnos primero por las necesidades de los pobres y vulnerables.
RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES En un mundo en el que algunos enfatizan esencialmente los “derechos” y otros los “deberes”, la tradición católica enseña que para proteger la dignidad humana y construir comunidades sanas se deben respetar los derechos humanos y cumplir los deberes. Por lo tanto, toda
persona tiene un derecho fundamental a la vida y un derecho a todo lo necesario para vivir con decencia. En correspondencia a esos derechos, también hay deberes y responsabilidades—de unos a otros, hacia nuestras familias y hacia la sociedad en general.
DIGNIDAD DEL TRABAJO Y LOS DERECHOS DE LOS TRABAJADORES En un mundo donde con demasiada frecuencia las ganancias tienen prioridad sobre los derechos de los trabajadores, nosotros creemos que la economía debe
servir a la gente y no al revés. El trabajo es más que una forma de ganarse la vida, es una forma de participar continuamente en la creación de Dios. Si se ha de proteger la dignidad del trabajo, entonces deben respetarse los derechos básicos de los trabajadores—el derecho a un trabajo productivo, a salarios adecuados y justos, a organizar sindicatos y a unirse a ellos, a la propiedad privada y a la iniciativa económica. Respetar estos derechos promueve una economía que protege la vida humana, defiende los derechos humanos y aumenta el bienestar de todos.
SOLIDARIDAD Frente a la tentación de la indiferencia y el aislacionis-mo, la doctrina social de la iglesia nos enseña que más allá de las diferencias nacionales, raciales, étnicas, cul-turales, lingüísticas, económicas e ideológicas, tenemos
mucho más en común, somos hermanos y hermanas en una sola familia humana. Nuestra tradición nos recuerda nuestra vocación a ser custodios de nuestros hermanos y hermanas dondequiera que se encuentren. Aprender a practicar la virtud de la solidaridad signifi-ca aprender que “amar a nuestro prójimo” tiene dimensiones glob-ales que van mucho más allá de nuestras fronteras nacionales. En el centro de la virtud de la solidaridad está la búsqueda de la justi-cia y la paz. El Beato Papa Pablo VI nos dijo: “si quieres paz, tra-baja por la justicia”.1 El Evangelio nos llama a ser pacificadores. Nuestro amor por todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas exige que fomentemos la paz en un mundo rodeado de violencia y conflicto.
CUIDADO DE LA CREACIÓN DE DIOS La tradición católica invita a que demostremos nuestro respeto por el Creador a través del cuidado de la creación. El cuidado del mundo y el medio ambiente no es sólo un eslogan para el Día de la Tierra, es un requisito de nuestra
fe. Estamos llamados a proteger a las personas y al mundo como nuestra casa común, viviendo nuestra fe en relación con toda la creación de Dios. Este desafío ambiental tiene dimensiones morales y éticas fundamentales que no pueden ser ignoradas.
LA ENSEÑANZA SOCIAL CATÓLICA La doctrina social de la lglesia es un rico tesoro de sabiduría sobre cómo construir una sociedad justa y vivir una vida de santidad en medio de los desafíos de la sociedad moderna. La doctrina social católica moderna ha sido articulada por medio de una tradición de documentos
papales, conciliares y episcopales que exploran y expresan las exigencias de nuestra fe en lo que refiere a amar a Dios y a nuestro prójimo. Leyendo directamente estos documentos se pueden entender mejor la profundidad y la riqueza de esta tradición. En estas breves reflexiones,
nos gustaría destacar varios de los temas clave que se encuentran en el centro de nuestra tradición social católica.

LIFE AND DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. This belief is the foundation of all the principles of our social teaching. In our society, human life is under direct attack
from abortion and euthanasia. Human life is threatened by cloning, embryonic stem cell research, and the use of the death penalty. The intentional targeting of civilians in war or terrorist attacks is always wrong. Catholic teaching calls on us to work to avoid war. Nations must protect the right to life by finding effective ways to prevent conflicts and resolve them by peaceful means. We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person.
CALL TO FAMILY, COMMUNITY, AND PARTICIPATION The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society—in economics and politics, in law and policy—directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and family are the central social institutions
that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.
RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met. Therefore, every person has a funda-mental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency. Corresponding
to these rights are duties and responsibilities—to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.
OPTION FOR THE POOR AND VULNERABLE A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions between rich and poor, our tradition recalls the story of the Last Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.
THE DIGNITY OF WORK AND THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing par-ticipation in God’s creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected—the right to
productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative.
SOLIDARITY We are one human family whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, wherever they may be. Loving our neighbor has global dimensions in a shrinking world. At the core of the virtue of solidarity is the pursuit of justice and peace.
Blessed Pope Paul VI taught that “if you want peace, work for justice.”1 The Gospel calls us to be peacemakers. Our love for all our sisters and brothers demands that we promote peace in a world surrounded by violence and conflict.
CARE FOR GOD’S CREATION We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental
moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.
CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the
challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal, conciliar, and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a direct reading of these documents.
