Questions 155-156 refer to the following city guide.

Best City to Move to in America

1. Dertroit

1 Detroit, like Pittsburgh, has made a major shift from an industrial town --- in Detroit’s case, auto industry --- into the 21st century as a hub for education, health and the arts. Yet, living in this city is quite affordable to our great surprise. The cost of living is 11.6 per cent below the national average and the average home price is well below $120,000. It’s ranked as one of the most comfortable city to live in many of the national surveys about living. The crime rate used to beabove the national average; however, statistics in 2009 shows that the rate was down by an ‘unprecedented’ 20 % in the second half of 2009. Moreover, this city is renowned for its low risk for a natural disaster such as an earthquake, hurricane or tornado. It is also repeatedly ranked as one of the best sports cities, with the Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball Team and the Detroit Red Wings National Hockey League Team and other major professional sports teams. You would be hard-pressed to find a city with more loyal sports fans. Let it be put down modestly that this fact should not be underestimated because after all it comes to quality of life when it comes to sports lovers.

The unemployment rate used to be nationally among the highest but things are getting better thanks to the efforts of the Obama administration.

Questions 169-171 refer to the following article.

The statistics are abominable. Nearly one out of three children in the Third World and other developing countries suffer from malnutrition or being in the state of undernourishment. Worldwide, poor nutrition linked to more than half of all child deaths.

Now a worldwide effort --- the largest ever ---is in progress to fight this health crisis, led by scientists in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. A $40 million grant from the Tom and Sophia Miller Foundation will fund a six-year study to investigate how malnutrition and intestinal infections result in serious lifelong physical and cognitive problems.

“Undernourishment is a devastating state which can ruin the human body,” says Richard Gilmore, director of the University of Pittsburgh for Global Health and the study’s head researcher. “It can be harmful to adults, indeed, but it is malnourished children who face lifelong problems, as most likely they do not reach their full physical and mental potential.”

Researchers do not sufficiently understand the causes of malnutrition or the complex relationship between malnutrition and intestinal infection. This is not merely a problem of access to food; many children who have enough to eat are in the state of undernourishment to our bewilderment. A focal point of the project --- the study of genetic differences in the researched population--- will shed light on what factors account for susceptibility to infectious organisms and malnutrition.

(C) They will not understand the causes ofmalnutrition for good.

(D) They will fail to receive necessary education to contribute to society.

171. What will this research focus on?

(A) Why do children with little access to foodexperience malnutrition?

(B) Why do children with enough food to eat avoid malnutrition?

How are researches associated with grantsfavorably?

Translation Brochure

I should be grateful if you would send us your brochure and price list about your translation services. We are currently developing our sales literature and web sites and are interested in translating these into five languages apart from English. The targeted languages are Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and Burmese. The reason why we concentrate on the languages of Asian countries is that that is the region we are going to compete hard in the next few years and that the region code now implemented in terms of DVD and other audio-visual copyrighted materials will face a major change in the near future. For your further convenience, I would like to introduce some of our universal services to you. One of the modern professions that have developed along with the increasing complexity of today’s technology is the audio visual consultant. We established our firm 27 years and ever since have focused our services on these consultation services of DVD and other audio-visual copyrighted materials. Many corporations use consultants for their advertisements and events of public appearances. When their materials are presented, the effective ways of presenting materials are the crucial points and that is why we are called for in so many places in the USA and other parts of the world. Questions 186-190 refer to the following pastime tips.

HOW TO MAKE A GOOD CUP OF COFFEE Start with fresh coffee Air dries out coffee and it affects the flavor, as a matter of course. Always purchase the freshest beans packed in airtight bags or freshly roasted at a local store. Roasting releases the flavor, so it tastes best right after roasting. The coffee industry’s packaging methodology has amazingly evolved. Coffee used to be stored in glass jars 100 years ago but now it is packed in flexibile bags wit hone-way valves. This evolution has helped the industry deliver fresh coffee. Know your beans Select roasts and blends depending on whether you prefer mild or intense coffee. As the ground-versus-whole-bean discussion goes on, you might want to keep in mind that modren packaging provides fresh ground coffee. If you buy whole bean coffee to grind it at home, then brewing should occur as soon as possible after grinding. Equipment, water Whether using a drip system or French press, keep your coffee maker clean and free of any hard water deposits or coffee residue that could taint the taste. Use fresh, cold water; if you don’t like your local tap water, used filtered. For each cup of cofee use six ounces of water, adding one level tablespoon of coffee plus one tablespoon “for the pot.”Drink immediately and repeat as needed. Use sweetener and creamer to taste, but many people find a good cup of coffee need only be followed by a second cup.

186. What is the most important about coffee?

(A) Freshness (B) Traditions (C) Water(D) Moisture

187. What should a person who has groundcoffee do?

(A) Package ground coffee (B) Brew coffee right after grinding (C) Compare it with whole beans (D) Dip it in water for brewing

HOW TO TRAIN FOR A MARATHON Get a plan

So you have decided to run a marathon. For those who are not sure where to start, there are many training programs geared toward beginners and first-time marathoners. Following a program will help you avoid injury and give you confidence. Your local running shop is a great resource for a training program. Questions 196-200 refer to the following short biography.

THE ULTIMATE HOSTESS

Dolley Madison is renowned as the typical gracious first lady, but that was just a phrase in a life filled with many ups and downs on the long and winding road. Dolley was born in North Carolina in 1786 and grew up in Virginia. It was in Philadelphia, however, that she married a young lawyer named John Todd, who died of yellow fever after having two sons. In 1794, she married James Madison, who was to become secretary of state in the administration of Thomas Jefferson. The Madisons moved to Washington, D.C., and the next fifteen years found that Dolley served as a hostess and lady of society in the capital. James was elected president in 1809, and Dolley used her social skills to help define the ceremonial forms we now associate with the first lady. James left office in 1817, and the Madisonsmoved to a quiet plantation in Montpelier, VA. For Dolley, these later years were increasingly plagued by economic concerns and family problems, including an alcoholic son. When James passed away in 1836, Dolley struggled to sell his papers, which they had thought would provide her with some financial security. In 1837, she returned to Washington, D.C., where friends helped her keep financially afloat. She died in 1849.

196. What was Dolley Madison?

(A) The governor of North Carolina. (B) The first lady of President

THE ULTIMATE HOSTESS

Our kind friend, Mr. Carroll, has come to hasten my departure, and is in a very bad humor with me because I insist on waiting until the large picture of Gen. Washington is secured, and it requires to be unscrewed from the wall. This process was found too tedious for these perilous moments; I have ordered the frame to be broken, and canvass taken out, … And now, dear sister, I must leave this house, or the retreating army will make me a prisoner in it, by filling up the road I am directed to take. When I shall again write you, or where I shall be tomorrow, I cannot tell!!

Below is an excerpt from a letter Dolley Madison wrote to Lucy Payne as British troops advanced on Washington in the War of 1812. On Aug. 24, 1814 --- a day after the letter was written--- the British entered the city and began torching numerous buildings, including the White House. Dolly had left the building only moments earlier.
