John Striker
Reardon Management
Dear Paul,
Several of your associates in your department have informed me of the incident
that occurred on January 16th with Mr Toby Connors of Littlewoods Ltd. They
have all agreed that the incident where Mr Connors insisted quite incorrectly,
that his company had placed an order with us and that we had called him to
inform him that his goods were ready, was handled most professionally by you.
They also all agreed that you remained professional the entire time, attempting
to solve the problem. I praise you on your self-control, and in handling the
situation in such an exemplary manner, especially as it turned out that the
order had originally been placed with our competitor.
I have placed a call to John Peters, the Operations manager at Littlewoods,
and anticipate your receiving an apology from them in due course.
Yours very truly,

155. In paragraph 2, line 3, the word ‘exemplary’ is closest in meaning to… A. cautionary. B. excellent. C. idealistic. D. advisory.
Directions: Questions 153-200 are based on a selection of reading materials, such as letters, notes, articles, forms, reports, and advertisements. You are to choose the one best answer A, B, C, or D, to each question. Answer all questions following each reading selection on the basis of what is stated or implied in that selection.
Read the following example.
The mission of the National Association of
Railroad Passengers is to work for a modern
national passenger train network that provides a
travel choice Americans want. We have worked
since 1967 to expand the quality and quantity
of passenger rail travel in the USA. Our work is
supported by over 23,000 individual members.
What is the N.A.R.P.'s mission? A. To expand the number of railway passengers B. To support its individual members C. To provide improved railway service D. To give choices to Americans traveling abroad
The reading selection says that they “have worked since 1967 to expand the quality ... of passenger rail travel”. Therefore, you should choose answer “C”. Now begin work on the questions.
Practice Test 1
159. People who say that you cannot drink tap water in America anymore should… A. join a health gym. B. attend church more often. C. not be paid attention to. D. be concerned about their appearances.
160. In paragraph 2, line 2, the word ‘dreaded’ is nearest in meaning to… A. astonishing. C. frightening. B. fervent. D. obnoxious.
Questions 159 through 162 refer to the following article.
When Americans go abroad, one of their biggest concerns is, “Can you drink the water?” You may find yourself asking the same question, especially in a hip, urban setting where you may notice many people, young and old, drinking from large and small plastic bottles. And these people will tell you, fiercely to put the fear of God in you, that “No! You cannot drink the tap water in America anymore!” Ignore these people. These are the same kind of people who will also inform you that you will drop dead before 40, or worse, become ugly, fat and stupid if you don’t jog or join an expensive health club where you pay to sweat. Now simply turn on the tap water and drink long and deep to quench your thirst. Do not be surprised
the next morning if you still feel healthy and energetic.
Unless you come from a country, or stopped over in one, where dreaded diseases such as cholera, malaria, yellow or dengue fever are a fact of daily life, you do not need inoculations to enter America.
Availability of certain drugs is also restricted. What you have been able to get at your neighborhood pharmacy in your country may require a doctor’s prescription. So if you take medications, (e.g., for blood pressure or cholesterol), you must find an American doctor who can prescribe them for you. Or bring enough to last during your stay.

171. In paragraph 1, line 2, the word “scuttling” is closest in meaning to… A. scurrying. C. assisting. B. darting. D. upsetting.
The proposed merger of the Morgan Stanley Group and the S. G. Warburg Group collapsed today, scuttling plans by the companies to create one of the world’s most powerful investment banks. The talks failed after Warburg’s independently run fund management subsidiary, Mercury Asset Management, held out for a better deal and Morgan Stanley refused to pay its price.
Mercury, Britain’s largest fund manager, is 75 percent owned by Warburg, and according to people involved in the negotiations, the chance to acquire it without paying a big premium to the market value was the primary attraction of the deal for Morgan Stanley. But Mercury, which has its own board, insisted that its public shareholders receive a premium for agreeing to transfer control.
Morgan Stanley, which is based in New York, and Warburg, Britain’s leading investment house, announced last week that they were negotiating to merge in a straight pooling of interests that would have left Morgan Stanley shareholders with two-thirds of the combined company and Warburg shareholders with a third.

Dear Ms. Ambergris and Ms. Peterson,
I am (a registered nurse) writing to urge you to reverse your decision and approve the artificial disc replacement surgery for Kim Butcher, a critical care RN who is scheduled for the procedure on March 11. ADR has been recommended by her neurosurgeon and is the only treatment that will allow her to return to work. Your pretext for denial is that ADR surgery is investigational. Disc replacement is a proven treatment; it was FDA approved in 2004. The first disc replacement in the US goes back to 1998, and has been the preferred treatment for degenerative disc disease in Europe since 1984. Among the insurance companies that cover ADR surgery are Aetna, Cigna, Kaiser, and Worker’s Compensation. Additionally, I am appalled that Blue Cross has been running radio ads touting the money you have donated to train more nurses in California while you are denying the surgery that will enable a highly trained nurse to return to work in a profession that is desperate for experienced RNs.
Sincerely,
166. What does the author of the fax want Blue Cross to do? A. To repeal their decision not to pay for the operation B. To stop running ads about donations for RN development C. To repeal their decision not to operate on Kim Butcher D. To admit that disc replacement surgery is investigational

168. What is NOT true according to the passage? A. At least four insurance companies cover ADR surgery. B. The operation has already been programmed for next month. C. Kim Butcher has over 10 years experience as a critical care nurse. D. No other treatments are available apart from ADR.

understand key vocabulary and develop their investigative skills;
2. Make teaching consistently good through rigorous monitoring and
support where it is weaker;
3. Appoint an educational visits coordinator to make sure that risk
assessments for trips are in place.
Having considered all the evidence, I am of the opinion that at this time
the school is making satisfactory progress in addressing the issues for
improvement and in raising the pupils’ achievement.

MAJOR CITIES AROUND THE WORLD JOIN WORLD WILDLIFE FUND IN FIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE
DURING EARTH HOUR 2008
Chicago, Copenhagen, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Toronto and others will create awareness and demonstrate leadership by switching off their lights on March 29, 2008.
Bali, Indonesia, December 14, 2007: WWF today announced the official launch of Earth Hour, a global initiative in which cities and communities will turn out their lights to symbolize their leadership and commitment to finding solutions for climate change.
Cities from across Europe, North America, Asia and Asia Pacific, including Chicago, Copenhagen, Manila, Melbourne, Sydney, Tel Aviv and Toronto were named as the flagship participants in the WWF-led event on March 29, 2008, with more cities expected to join in the days ahead.
During Earth Hour, governments, businesses, community leaders and individuals will be turning out their lights and switching on their support for actions that can help make a difference in the most significant challenge facing the world today. While we expect the government leaders here in Bali to make courageous decisions that are needed to save our planet, Earth Hour reminds us that each of us can be part of the solution to climate change.
WWF’s inaugural Earth Hour took place in Sydney, Australia in March this year with more than 2.2 million people participating in an effort that darkened icons such as the Sydney Opera House and the Harbor Bridge and resulted in a ten per cent drop in energy usage - double what had been predicted.
Hey, I just signed up to the new Earth Hour website for 2008 and I thought you might like to take a look and possibly sign up too. Earth Hour is on 29 March 2008 at 8pm, and it looks like it’s going to be really big. So far, as well as Sydney, there’ll also be Chicago, Tel Aviv, Manila, Copenhagen, Melbourne, Brisbane and Toronto all turning off their lights for an hour in the name of fighting global warming. And I’m sure there’ll be more cities by March. Sign up for Earth Hour with me by visiting http://www.earthhour.org/sign-up and join the movement.

* Stand not included in quoted price
Dear Sir,
I purchased a P60 from one of your Yamaha outlets last week after seeing your advertisement in my local newspaper (copy of which is enclosed). I have a complaint about the factual correctness of your advertisement.
Firstly, the price I was initially quoted was €400. When I showed them the advert, they told me that it included the stand. I already have a stand so I didn’t need another. When I told them this, they said that all the models come with a stand. I showed them the advert and pointed out the price quoted was without the stand; they just shrugged their shoulders. I insisted that they had to sell me the instrument at the price advertised and that if not, I would complain to their head office. Finally, they told me that I could have it for €380 cash, not €350, as the stand was priced at €20, and there was a typing error on the advert. At this point I gave in as there was no other outlet in my vicinity where I could get this particular model.
As is evident, I would like you to look into this issue immediately and contact me so as to find a solution to the error by your sales staff.
Awaiting a reply,
John Sutton

Letter to the editor - Global Warming Lunacy
Dear Sir,
I am writing in response to the article on global warming printed in
last Sunday’s newspaper. The climate is never just “average”. It
changes all the time, from season to season, year to year, and over
the millennia. And that includes not only temperature, but rain, snow,
droughts, storms, and every conceivable feature of the weather. So
watch out when you read about the “hottest year,” “longest drought”
or “biggest hurricane”. There is bound to be a weather record of some
sort, set at some time, somewhere in the world.
But are there long-term climate trends? Is it getting warmer or is it
getting colder? The correct answer is: it all depends on the time scale
you choose. The global climate has warmed over the last 100 years,
but not appreciably over the last 50 years. It is colder now than it was
1,000 years ago. And do you recall that the global climate cooled from
1940 until about 1975, raising fears of an impending ice age?
Are human activities influencing climate? Yes, of course. The rise of
agriculture and the growth of cities have changed the local climate
significantly. With increasing populations and rising industrial activity
there have also been some worldwide changes: temperature extremes
have softened, the stratosphere is cooling, the frequency of hurricanes
has been diminishing - all of these are thought to be human influences
on the atmosphere. But this does not mean there will be a catastrophic
or even a substantial warming of the climate in the next century.

In response to your letter to the Telegraph titled ‘Global Warming Lunacy’ I would like to point out that all of the glaciers in Glacier National Park in Montana will be gone in the next 50 to 70 years, according to researchers who have been measuring the rate that glaciers are melting around the world. Those glaciers are melting faster than scientists had previously thought, according to the study by geologist Mark Meier, who presented his findings at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Boston, which I attended on Tuesday.
“The glaciers are receding and they’re becoming thinner, and you can see this,” Meier says, placing the blame squarely on global warming. “The melting ice caps are contributing to rising sea levels that lead to beach erosion, increased, not decreased, number and strength of hurricanes and more severe inland storms,” he adds. “And rivers are bursting their banks more often as a result,” he concludes.
Meier and his research team at the University of Colorado at Boulder looked at characteristics of glaciers worldwide during the last 100 years, and then compared the measurements to today’s ice caps. They found that mid-latitude glaciers - those outside of Antarctica and Greenland - had receded and become thinner. Perhaps global warming is not lunacy after all.

TV AD REVENUES SET TO RISE DESPITE
SLOWDOWNGlobal television advertising revenues are expected to grow by nearly 6 per cent to $123bn (£61bn) this year, despite fears of an economic downturn.
In the UK, the market will rise by 1.5 per cent to $7bn next year, and will grow by a further 24 per cent over the next four years, according to research from industry analysts Informa Telecoms & Media.“The Olympic Games and the US election will push up TV advertising spending worldwide this year,” Simon Murray, an Informa media analyst, said. Forecasts for the following years are also strong, with the global market set to grow to $148bn in 2012. But the character of the sector is changing. Audiences are increasingly fragmented and cable TV channels are taking a growing share of advertising revenues. Subscription channels will account for 15 per cent, or $18bn, globally this year, which is more than double their share of five years ago.
