There is something for everyone at November Music 2014. Those who love
string quartets can feast on Kronos, Arditti, Brodsky, Bozzini, Ragazze,
DoelenKwartet, and Zapp4. These ensembles often feature in extraordinary
programmes or as part of special combinations. Slagwerk Den Haag is our
ensemble in residence. Every day it will be possible to admire its diversity and
talents. This year will see the second edition of Colours of Improvisation with
an exciting triptych of international and Dutch jazz highlights. It promises to be
as thrilling as the first. Naturally, we are very proud to present the 83-year old
Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina. She will attend the Dutch premiere of
her latest work. Oud player Anouar Brahem, who rarely visits the Netherlands,
will also be at November Music 2014. In addition, the South Netherlands
Philharmonic plays four premieres. Not to mention the Kunstmuziekroute (art
music trail) and the Premiere Day. The programme is full to overflowing. Come
to the hospitable city of ’s-Hertogenbosch in November and take your pick from
the varied offerings. Memorable musical experiences are guaranteed!

Anouar Brahem QuartetThe Astounding Eyes of Ritanew world music / jazz
‘Albums as perfect as this appear rarely’, wrote The Independent about
Anouar Brahem’s The Astounding Eyes of Rita. The Tunisian oud player’s
improvisations are exhilarating. Modern world music that brings inner peace
and demonstrates masterly control of the instrument. Brahem fuses jazz,
folk, and ethnical sources into a precious amalgam. With Khaled Yassine
(darbouka, bendir), Björn Meyer (bass), and Klaus Gesing (bass clarinet).

thursday 6 november friday 7 november
An evening of orchestral crossovers. The South Netherlands Philharmonic
pulls out all the stops as it presents new compositions. There are special
guest appearances by Norwegian guitarist Stian Westerhus and the
Icelandic electronics master, Valgeir Sigurosson.
Among others, Sigurosson worked with Brian Eno, Feist, and Björk.
He uses dark (water) colours to paint No Nights Dark Enough. Stian
Westerhus – formerly Nils Petter Molvear’s guitarist – features prominently
in The Redundance 40, his composition for orchestra and guitar.
Tonight’s Dutch contribution is significant. Rozalie Hirs and Kate Moore –
‘composers in focus’ at November Music 2014 – have updated their
respective pieces Roseherte and Days and Nature.
At a previous edition of November Music, the German composer/clarinettist
Jörg Widmann met the Dutch Ragazze Quartet. He was smitten straight away.
The Ragazze perform Widmann’s fiendishly difficult yet scintillating Jagd
Quartett. It’s an invigorating piece of music that incorporates Beethoven’s
famous opening measures of the Seventh Symphony. Together, the five
musicians will play the emotional roller coaster Vier Studien zu einem
Klarinettenquintett composed by Widmann’s influential teacher, Wolfgang Rihm.
De Toonzaal / 7 – 8 PM (€ 13 / € 10)
A wondrous musical showcase brimming with dramatic absurdities and
compositional finds. Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen’s music theatre
throws reality out of kilter as the listeners are wrong-footed, time and again.
Live video images play a key part in this chamber opera (without vocals).
Ephemeral, surrealistic, and unforgettable.

Pianist Franz von Chossy combines jazz with chamber music and
contemporary world music. ‘Hauntingly beautiful,’ is how AllaboutJazz
described his music. The quintet features violinist Jeffrey Bruinsma, cellist
Jörg Brinkmann, clarinettist Alex Simu, and drummer Yonga Sun. Add to
this the world-renowned Wu Wei who plays the sheng, a traditional Chinese
mouth organ. A concert that promises to be beautiful and cosmopolitan.

Daredevil rhythms and compelling pulses fill the room. Tonight’s great minimal
classic Drumming allowed Steve Reich to leave his musical mark for all times.
An astounding work in four sections. The instruments include eight bongo
drums, three marimbas, and three glockenspiels to which Reich added subtle
vocal lines. The musical patterns merge and fan out almost imperceptibly,
resulting in a hypnotic sound tapestry.
Verkadefabriek Grote Zaal / 10 – 11 PM (€ 15 / € 12)
American jazz trio The Bad Plus has astounded the audience as well as the
critics with a unique version of Le Sacre du Printemps. At November Music, it can
be heard live in The Netherlands for the very first time. Prominent jazz magazine
Downbeat awarded the eponymous album no fewer than five stars. ‘It’s about
as badass as highbrow gets,’ exclaimed Rolling Stone. Although it is possible to
descry elements of Stravinsky’s original work, The Bad Plus ‘owns’ the explosive
material in an unprecedented manner. Infernal rhythms, gripping melodies,
brilliant instrumental inventions, and magical abdominal harmonies. *Tomorrow,
8 November, Dutch guitarist Anton Goudsmit joins The Bad Plus on stage

For 40 years, the Arditti Quartet has championed the contemporary string
quartet repertoire. In collaboration with soprano Sarah Sun, Irvine Arditti and
his men perform Pandora’s Box, composed by New York all-rounder John
Zorn. ‘…Zorn may be a jack-of-all-trades but this intriguing work shows that he
should be taken seriously as a composer,’ exulted Dutch national newspaper
De Volkskrant. The programme features work by Georg Friedrich Haas as
well as the premiere of a piece by eccentric Scotsman James Dillon, who
manages to mine pure gold from intricately complex sound textures.

A roaring hurricane of sound! The Dutch-American composer David Dramm
has created a spectacular piece for accordion quartet plus 396 accordions on

Pieternel Berkers, and Ellen Zijm.

composer Reza Namavar has a mature command of technique and a slightly
absurdist sense of humour. Together with composer Janco Verduin, he
explores the possibilities of the barrel organ when played in combination with
live musicians. In addition, a premiere of a work by Arthur van der Kuip,
who won his spurs as dance company T.r.a.s.h’s house composer.

of inspiration.

Both Elvis Costello and Björk asked it to lend a musical hand. This is no

of a quartet by Robin de Raaff. Plus Dmitri Sjostakovitsj’s String quartet No. 5

Marc Ribot is a top class musician. Big names such as Tom Waits, John Zorn,
and Elvis Costello have requested his guitar services. Meanwhile, the trio
resembles a high-level summit between three generations of improvisers.
Elder statesman is legendary bassist Henry Grimes, who has played with
Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. Drummer Chad Taylor is equally at
home in the world of jazz as in the realm of post-rock. De Volkskrant wrote
this about their recently released live album: ‘An ode to the past but without
nostalgia. Musicianship that goes all out ****’.

Composer Boudewijn Tarenskeen describes the reformer Martin Luther as
a man with a free and incisive mind, who gradually gets entangled in his own
ideas. A brilliant and deeply religious thinker, struggling with despair and
dread. The oratorio features an intense and agonizing dialogue between the
tormented Luther and the grandiose choir (Cappella Amsterdam) that takes
on various roles: audience, well-meaning bystanders, a suspicious world.
With an extraordinary epilogue written by Gerardjan Rijnders. Baritone
Michel Poels is Luther and the actor Titus Muizelaar is the interpreter.
Directed by Paul Koek. De Volkskrant extolled Tarenskeen’s Luther as
‘Theatrical, dramatic, and fascinating.’

The musical spectrum of contemporary jazz and impro is vast. Colours of
Improvisation (which consists of three parts) puts the spotlight on these
variegated colours. It consists of two unique collaborations between Dutch
and American stars. Plus the newest global jazz sensation.
Zapp4 ft. Marc Ribot
A review in NRC Handelsblad describes ZAPP4 as ‘The hardest grooving string
quartet of the Netherlands’. The group mixes genres and styles at will. This time
– for the first time – in collaboration with guitarist Marc Ribot, who has played
with Tom Waits, John Zorn, McCoy Tyner, Robert Plant, and many others.
The Bad Plus ft. Anton Goudsmit
The American piano trio The Bad Plus is one of the most original and unique

seems an ideal partner for the maverick Dutch jazz improvisator, guitarist Anton

The Canadian saxophonist Colin

that scour, mix, fuse, and intermingle.

Evan Parker & Sten Sandelljazz / impro
At 70, saxophonist and free jazz pioneer Evan Parker embodies the brilliance
of the English improvisation scene. Parker is well-known for his fabulous
circular breathing technique. He has worked with stimulating sparring partners
such as Peter Brötzmann, John Zorn, and Fred Frith. Today, he meets up with
the Swedish organist Sten Sandell, a freethinker for whom improvisation,
experimenting, and composing are inextricably linked.

Jazz that knows no boundaries for guitar, oboe, and double bass.
November Music gave carte blanche to guitarist Michiel Stekelenburg,
who put together an extraordinary trio that enables him to indulge
a penchant for spicy improvisation, hot-blooded rock jazz, and world music.

John Zorn’s Book of Angels is a musical celebration that fuses influences of
Jewish traditional music, neoclassicism, and contemporary jazz. The cycle
was written for the golden couple of the New York improvisation scene:
violinist Mark Feldman and pianist Sylvie Courvoisier. At November Music,
the duo performs in the historic synagogue De Toonzaal, an apt location.
*During the third set (at 5 PM), Feldman and Courvoisier will play their own

Accordion virtuoso Vincent van Amsterdam plays old and new work with equal
alacrity. De Profundis (1978) is the very first piece written for bayan (Russian
accordion) by the world famous composer Sofia Gubaidulina. The old man
and the sea (2014) by Aart Strootman is an ode to Ernest Hemingway’s
impressive eponymous novel. The sea, the battles with the fish, and the
sense of despair are evident in Strootman’s composition.

One of the weirdest compositions in Dutch music history
is making a comeback. Peter Schat’s To You (1973) has
legendary status but is rarely played on a concert stage
as it requires an extravagant combination of soprano, six
guitars, three bass guitars, four pianos, two organs, and
the famous giant humming tops. Nevertheless, Ensemble
f.c. Jongbloed plus initiator (and guitarist) Aart Strootman
will rise to the challenge – alongside the reconstructed
humming tops.

Perhaps surprisingly, piano and percussion have a lot in common. After all,
when someone plays the piano, small felt-padded hammers are striking
the strings. Slagwerk Den Haag and pianist Ralph van Raat approach the
percussive aspects of the piano from various angles in Peter Adriaansz’
composition Hammer Music.

The music played by Ensemble Lunatree evolves in
close collaboration with kindred composers. New pieces
by Raphael Vanoli and Luc Houtkamp are part of the
programme, which was specifically put together for
November Music. Ensemble composers Piet-Jan van
Rossum and Arnold Marinissen are responsible for the
‘musical design’. Knalpot guitarist Raphael Vanoli and
percussionist Fedor Teunisse join Lunatree live on stage.

Sofia Gubaidulina is one of the most important living composers of the early
part of the 21st century. To her, music is a mystical sound ritual. As she pulls
listeners into a spiritual, almost sacral world Gubaidulina works magic with the
elements of space and time. The 83-year old composer will be in attendance
at November Music when the Amsterdam Sinfonietta performs the Dutch
premiere of her new composition for flute, clarinet, and strings, entitled Why?
In addition, a classic work by Dmitri Shostakovich, Ms. Gubaidulina’s
colleague and compatriot. Chamber-Symphony for strings op. 118a is
a signature piece for the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, which has earned them
plaudits all over the world. It is a renowned and very successful arrangement
of Shostakovich’s String Quartet no. 10 by the violinist Rudolf Barshai.

The closing concert of November Music 2014 features the world’s most
famous string quartet. Kronos will play a selection of exotic quartets,
with a focus on modern music from the Middle East and a special guest
appearance by Dutch singer Nora Fischer.
The Kronos Quartet (from San Francisco) has performed world premieres
of works by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Sofia Gubaidulina and played on
the soundtrack of various films, including Requiem for a Dream and The Great
Gatsby. Nora Fischer is one of the Netherlands’ major vocal talents. Last year,
she sang at November Music in a piece by Osvaldo Golijov, an Argentinean
composer whose work is in the Kronos Quartet repertoire.

Funders and financiers
Contributing to November Music
is an excellent way to promote the
extraordinary works of many Dutch
composers. Buma supports and fosters
contemporary music and jazz produced
by composers and lyricists from the
Netherlands.
The Dioraphte foundation supports high-
quality art and cultural projects aimed at an
(inter)national audience. The November Music
festival can count on us to present (inter)
national music to the general public. Not in the
distant future but now. Because culture is a
treasure trove that should be widely shared.
