Exodus is thestory of Moses(Christian Bale)and PharaohRamses (JoelEdgerton), whogrew up asbrothers butended as leadersof opposing na-tions and God/s.Sigourney

Weaver makes a brief appear-ance as Ramses mother, Tuya.

I thought this movie wasconfused tonally, whether it was

an intimate relationship storybetween two brothers tornapart by God/gods, a disastermovie featuring the Ten Plaguesof Egypt, or the life journey of aformer prince of Egypt who be-came the reluctant leader of theHebrew nation. All of theseideas, individually, would havemade a different movie. Theseideas, when they are shown onscreen in individual scenes, hintat a better, emotionally truthful

whole. But together in onemovie, these ideas dont make acohesive whole that tried to de-pict everything (the benevolentprince, anti-slavery, the scientif-ic explanation to the plagues) -everything but a supreme God

who did not have to explain thecause and effect of His powers.

Exodus, curiously just likethe directors sci-fi adventurePrometheus, looked cold, feltcold. Its set pieces and effects

were impressive on their own -but in grounding the story insome realism, in trying to con-nect cause and effect between

these plagues, the result is thatthese plagues which were sup-posed to have come from The

Almighty looked like freakishscenes from a disaster movie.

All including the Red Sea,which didnt part but more likesubsided just before a tsunami.

Bale and Edgerton lookedlike they tried their best to putemotional gravitas even to thesilliest dialogue, but the weightof the words just didnt seem tobe there.

The intent may have been torecreate this inspiring story intosomething relevant to todaysgeneration, but no amount ofmanna from heaven could savethis bible story from collapsingunder its own big-budget

The story may sound similarto other animations that featureants and bugs, but its relianceon simple visual storytelling

with no hyperventilative dia-logue and no pop culture refer-ences makes Minuscule differ-ent from the usual animatedstory weve come to see. Thatsperfect for toddlers and very

young kids of any language.
