In the Canadian Junior Beef Extreme Show, Jaelayne Wilson, Bashaw, Alberta was declared Supreme with her pair, DMM Miss Essence 14Y, a January 8, 2011 daughter

It was the enthusiasm of the Beef Cattle Manager, Cletus Sehn, of research being pursued, that stimulated me to share (with the livestock industry) the work and nature of the Canada Agriculture Research Centre at Lacombe, Alberta. I, as many others like me, drive by and assume the facility is just another government arm using up our hard earned tax dollars. After a little research on the history of the Research Centre, I came to realize that the role they have played in the advancement of agriculture over the past century

has been and continues to be gigantic. Seldom would one actualize that fruit preserves consumed at breakfast have been developed and bettered by the horticulture division; that the bacon and eggs were upgraded, through genetic mating, to benefit both the producer and consumer and that toast has been influenced as a result of many years of field trials by crop scientists. In the livestock sector, tests and trials have lead the beef industry to performance testing, grading systems, feeding methods and higher productive forage varieties. In the twenty-first century, scientists are exploring new innovative technological programs to maintain Canada as a leader in agriculture worldwide. This requires both national and international collaboration and scientist at Lacombe continue to strengthen relationships with industry, universities and organizations like Livestock Gentec.

History

Although experimentation of agriculture in Western Canada actually began with the Selkirk Settlers in the early 1800’s, in Manitoba, bringing one and a half bushels of wheat from Scotland; the establishment of the Department of Agriculture in 1868, (one year after Confederation) laid the foundation for agricultural research in Canada. The Department’s initial steps took the form of joint investigations with the Ontario Agricultural College which was founded in 1873. Being inadequate to address the many different conditions in our vast country, a bill was passed in Parliament authorizing the establishment of five experimental farms, with the one for Ontario and Quebec designated as the Central Farm. Dr. Saunders was appointed Director of the new Experimental Farms service and immediately acquired a four hundred sixty six acre parcel of land outside our National Capitol and started clearing and construction. In addition, he travelled throughout the country selecting other required sites and chose Nappan, Nova Scotia in the Maritimes, Brandon in Manitoba, Agassiz in British Columbia and Indian Head, which at that time was still the Northwest Territories. Saunders, during his first year as Director, gave particular attention to crops and horticulture, but later broadened activities to include various species of farm livestock and poultry. By 1900, the Department of Agriculture evidenced the success and need of the program and amended the act to allow extension of the system. This one distinction, between the original five and those that might be added, was that the latter would be designated as experimental stations, not farms. In 1880, the first land surveys of the Lacombe area took place and three years later, in 1883, the first permanent settler arrived, Ed Barnett. Barnett, a retired member of the North-West Mounted Police, left Fort MacLeod in August 1881 at the age of twenty-three and established a “stopping house” for travelers on a land grant given to him

for his service in the North-West Mounted Police along the Calgary-Edmonton Trail. His family and friends from Ontario moved out and the community began to grow. The stopping house became known as Barnett’s Siding. In 1891, the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived, providing better access to the area and new opportunities for settlement. Village status was granted in 1896 and town status in 1902. The name Barnett’s Siding was changed to Lacombe, named after Father Albert Lacombe, a French-Canadian Roman Catholic missionary who lived among and evangelized the Cree and Blackfoot First Nations of Western Canada. In 1904, the Lacombe Board of Trade submitted an application to the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Sydney A. Fisher, for an establishment of an experimental farm. After much consideration and negotiation, the application was approved and 160 acres of land were secured just south of the town site from Hiram Francis Flewwelling who homesteaded it in 1895. The price fifty dollars per acre, of which five thousand dollars was paid by the Government and balance was covered by contributions of local citizens. The deal received cabinet approval on February 25, 1907 and the Lacombe Experimental Station was born. Mr. Gladstone George Hall Hutton was hired as Superintendent at a salary of twelve hundred dollars per year. The next two years were consumed by building and establishing the station. Since one hundred and thirty of the one hundred and sixty acres were cultivated, planting proceeded on May 1, 1907, on sixty acres of prepared ground. All the cereal crop plots for one hundred and twenty-five experiments were with spring wheat, oats and barley. Field peas, red clover, alfalfa, several root crops, one hundred and fifty-two varieties of fruit trees, a collection of raspberries, currants, gooseberries and strawberries were accessed from the central Farm in Ottawa. In addition, several thousand specimens of evergreens, deciduous trees and shrubs were planted and can still be found on the grounds today. For the first five years, all efforts were designated to experimental cropping and horticulture with livestock not even in the equation; although, two grade Jersey cows were purchased in 1907 to provide milk for the staff. Mr. Hutton was judge of the swine and dairy classes at the Calgary Exhibition (what is now known as the Calgary Stampede) and was impressed by two Jersey heifers exhibited by B.H. Bull of Brampton, Ontario. After placing them first and second in class, he purchased them as the foundation for a dairy herd at the station and by 1912, he was given authorization to establish both beef and dairy herds. The beef herd began with the purchase of nineteen Aberdeen Angus females and herd sire, Elm Park Ringleader 7th -2861-. In addition, fifty steers were purchased in the fall for winter feeding trials. The beef breeding herd, like the dairy herd, was used for demonstration of the value of purebred sires in grading up and a commercial grade herd was also developed at that time. Prior to 1920, the extension of the station was geared to speaking engagements, exhibits of an educational

nature at local and provincial fairs and exhibitions and judging of seed, horticulture and livestock. On only one occasion in 1919, did the station provide a show ring entry; a crossbred steer entered in the Calgary Winter Fair and successfully named Reserve Champion. But that changed with the appointment of F.H. Reed as Superintendent of the Lacombe Research Station, a strong proponent of the show ring.

In 1921, Mr. Reed decided that the station initially show on the Alberta circuit, exhibiting sheep and the next year, swine were added to the exhibition circuit. In 1923, twelve Aberdeen Angus were selected and fitted by herdsman, Bill Jardine who spent six weeks on the road in the summer of 1924, earning impressive winnings at Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer. Stimulated by the successful show season, Mr. Jardine fitted a new Angus show herd and in 1925, covered six major shows that culminated at the Chicago International Livestock Exhibition. Among the many awards received were Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Championships in both bulls and heifers at Chicago. The large resources required to fund the show ring activity played heavily on the research efforts. The dairy operation was discontinued; the sheep flock dispersed and the feeding trials suspended. Further to escalating spending, in 1928 blood testing for Bangs Disease (Brucella Abortus) revealed several positive reactors and the entire Angus herd was slaughtered. On recommendation from the Ottawa administration, a purebred Shorthorn herd was established, a dual-purpose breed which could be used for both beef and dairy research. The herd was tested for Bangs annually and the station was placed on a program of calf-hood vaccination.Growth, research and development grew to a snail pace entering the 1930’s. The Great Depression and collapse in 1928-1929, coupled with mother nature’s wrath from 1930 through 1937 (The Dirty Thirty’s) affected both revenue and funding. The annual appropriation for station operations was reduced from fifty thousand dollars in 1929 to thirty-three thousand dollars in 1933. High winds and drought ruined many of the seed plots and gravely affected all pasture lands, further impeding many areas of research. In post-war years, Bangs disease continued to be a problem in the beef cattle herd. Calfhood vaccination initiated as a control procedure, in 1946, could not be evaluated until the heifers came into production and the cull of reactor cows was deferred, to ensure the “strenuous” test of the effect of the vaccination program. To control spreading the disease, the practice of year-round breeding was replaced by a seventy day midsummer breeding season and the cow herd was placed under an outdoor management regime. The change in breeding practices also provided animals of uniform age for the testing program. The program was intended to develop testing procedures appropriate for genetically meaningful performance evaluation; provide detailed information on pre and post weaning growth curves for beef animals and finally, provided information used in a program of selection

for rapid growth rates of potential herd sires. The results of the study clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of selection for genetic improvement of growth rate. This study, which began at the Lacombe Research Station in 1949 and a companion study, which extended cooperative projects with the Brandon Station in Manitoba; Scott Station, Saskatchewan and the Indian Head Station in Saskatchewan, provided much of the input into the design

of the national Record of Performance (ROP) in Canada. The study continued through the 60’s and at that time was the largest beef cattle selection program ever undertaken in the world. The genetic information it provided over five generations, represented the first clear evidence of the effect of consistent performance selection with this species. The increase in yearling weights of bulls averaged ten kg per year, of which approximately 45% resulted from genetic change. In the late 50’s and early 60’s, a new wave of livestock was entering North America, the European Continental breeds. In 1964, development began on a maximum security health inspection and quarantine facility for cattle entering Canada from Europe. Two years later, Jack Stothart was commissioned to visit Europe to select and evaluate the cattle breeds suitable for Canadian conditions. He selected four bulls and eight heifers of French Simmental. Prior to their arrival in 1968, Lacombe Research Station documented a comprehensive program (foreign breed evaluation) for testing growth and carcass characteristics in F1 steers and the lifetime reproductive performance of F1 females; a program chaired by Howard Fredeen. The program used Simmental, Charolais and Limousin bulls mated to Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn cows. This undertaking was by far the largest to date with stations at Brandon, Manitoba and Manyberries, Alberta managing the cow herds while Lacombe developed and maintained the data bank and evaluated the feedlot performance and carcass testing. The testing which was integral for the beef industry, both for the cow-calf operation and feedlots, ran into the 90’s. In the group of Simmental imports which arrived in 1968, one of the bulls was Quadrille - CA 20 - and one of the females was Princesse -CA 17 -; their mating produced Lacombe Achilles - CA 38 - bred by the Lacombe Research Station. Lacombe Achilles was purchased by a partnership of breeders from Manitoba and Texas. The new breed sensation became the most travelled purebred bull in history. He was displayed at Canadian Western Agribition at the Regina Inn; displayed at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado; the Fort Worth Stock Show, Fort Worth Texas; the Dixie National Stock Show in Jackson, Mississippi and the Stock Show in Houston, Texas. Lacombe Achilles became a landmark sire in the Simmental breed with over fifty one hundred direct progeny recorded in Canada. Since its beginning, the Lacombe Research Station has devoted a large part of animal testing on swine. They have been breeders, suppliers, but most importantly, innovators

in pork advancement and production. The Lacombe Research Station developed the first Canadian developed breed of livestock, namely, the Lacombe hog, which made the first public exhibition at the National Swine Show in Brandon in 1957. The intense research on swine was a great benefit to the beef research in the field of carcass testing. In the initial years of the selection programs with beef cattle and hogs, carcass quality of breeding stock had to be predicted from measurements from slaughtered siblings of progeny. The process was slow and diminished the breeding stock herd. The first studies dating back to 1947 were conducted with the assistance of Swift Canadian Co. Ltd. in Edmonton via the slaughter method. In 1952 an ultrasound technique, developed during the war, to measure the depth of tissue damage in flesh exposed to frost bite was investigated, but the equipment was too awkward. In 1954, a probe device to measure back fat was used on hogs and preliminary studies with x-ray technique was pursued by 1955. In 1966, Lacombe Research Station broadened their carcass and meat quality studies to beef cattle. Included in their work was a study of changes in beef quality, associated with length of the carcass aging period. In 1968, with assistance from the Alberta Department of Agriculture and the Western Stock Growers Association, the work was extended to include examination of alternate beef grading systems. Based on this study, Lacombe Research Station prepared a proposal for revising grading standards which resulted in the new national beef carcass grading system adopted in September 1972. Through the 80’s, 90’s and into the current century, the face of the station has been altered with new offices and laboratories for virtually every segment of research. A modern beef handling facility was built in 1997, a thousand head feedlot was constructed in 2007 and automated systems for monitoring feed intake. In 1984 the Meat Research Centre was built, complete with a federally inspected slaughter and processing facility and five meat laboratories. This completion established Lacombe Research Station as the only centre in Canada and one of the few in the world, with the infrastructure and expertise to conduct research on factors affecting meat quality throughout the entire stages from animal conception through to consumption. The Western Forage Beef Agreement of 1994 utilized the beef cattle at the Lacombe Station for new research which included grazing studies, pasture management, feed efficiency and cattle identification systems which continue through to the current era. In 1998, the Meat Research Centre was expanded to include an additional seventeen hundred square meter laboratory building, encompassing scientific capacity in physiology, biochemistry, lipid chemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, virology and sensory evaluation.

Today...the Lacombe Research Centre encompasses approximately twenty-three hundred acres utilized for crop research and development, forage/beef research, in addition to pasture and feed production for the growing beef herd that is maintained at the centre. Research is focused on meat safety, meat quality, forage/beef systems, swine production, crop and soil management and cereal crop breeding. The Beef Cow Herd

The beef cow herd consists of four hundred cows which are set up to calve in two intervals ...three hundred cows calve in the spring (the heifers are bred to start near March 12th while the cows will start near April 1st), while the one hundred fall calving cows calve September to October 15th. With one of only two federally operated research abattoirs in the country ( the other in Guelph, Ontario)the need for finished beef to conduct safety and quality research has never been greater. This need for a continued flow of product was the driving factor behind calving twice yearly. Within the spring and fall herds, two styles of cows are maintained...the British cow, comprised of Black Angus crossed with Hereford and a Continental cow, made up of Red Angus crossed with Red Simmental. These breeds have been chosen in an attempt to keep pace with and to conduct research on the type of cattle that producers are currently raising for the industry. Angus were chosen as the foundation for both styles of cows, as much of the emphasis is placed on strong maternal attributes. The foundation of the cow herd was established with the selection of fifty Black Angus cows from the Onefour Ranch Research Station at Manyberries, Alberta in the fall of 1999. These fifty cows were the result of a program which placed emphasis on strong maternal traits for generations and became the ideal fit, establishing a predictable base required for the breeding program and the research which was to follow. Cletus Sehn, the Beef Cattle Manager relates, “We DNA test everything and have parentage records on every cow in the herd. Our records are an important asset and are maintained at the highest level of completenessand accuracy for research purposes”. The Breeding Program

The breeding program is very simple in that all heifers, no matter their genetic make-up, are bred Red and Black Angus for their first calf, primarily for calving ease. All heifers are synchronized using CIDR’s and a series of Estradiol Benzoate and Esturmate injections over a ten day period. They are bred A.I. all on the same day to proven low birth weight industry sires. “Through the use of A.I., we get the opportunity to use leading industry genetics and it also reduces the need to purchase so many bulls.” The clean-up bulls are only out with the heifers for thirty days. This short and rigid breeding season ensures a high level of fertility as they are adopted into the cow herd. The heifers are always bred to calve one cycle ahead of the main cow herd. This is done primarily to “front load” these heifers into the program. This allows additional time to heal and return to estrus so that longevity in the herd can be achieved. Black Angus, while the Red Angus influence heifers are bred Red Angus. From that point on, for every subsequent mating, a

cow is bred to a bull that is of the least prevalent breed type in her lineage in an attempt to increase heterosis in her progeny. For example, if a cow is 75% Black Angus and 25% Hereford, a Hereford bull would be used to increase heterosis. If a cow is 50/50 in her genetic make-up, the default sire is always Angus. Whether the sire is Black or Red Angus will depend on the original style of the cow (British being bred Black Angus and Continental being Red Angus). The style of cow being targeted in the Hereford X Black Angus is one with pigmented eyes and udder. Using Black Angus as the default sire ensures that. In the Continental herd, particular attention is given to percentages so as to maintain moderate frame size in the Red Angus X Red Simmental cattle. Uniformity is a word often used in the industry and is certainly strived for in the Lacombe Research herd. All mature cows see

service to walking bulls used at Lacombe Research Centre and are exposed for a forty-five day breeding season, after which all open cows are culled. In recent years with the need to be able to prove progeny on all heifer calves, single sire breeding has been utilized. Not only has this led to less injury in the herd bull battery, but has the added advantage of being able to see what each individual sire is putting back into the program. Being able to identify each sire’s female progeny and evaluating their return ( heifers retained) to the program has become a valuable management tool. All of the commercial females retained are raised from within the Lacombe Research Centre program. A great deal of care has been taken to select and raise cattle that are on par with today’s commercial cattlemen. Fertility, feet, udder score, mothering ability and temperament are a few of the maternal traits that are emphasized. In addition, production numbers such as weaning weight and yearling weight are given consideration. Sires of all the breeds utilized are purchased from reputable breeders with no single trait being more important than another. Careful consideration is given to the maternal attributes of the bull’s mother

before purchasing as we retain all replacements from within our herd. It has become apparent that bulls raised by good cows with strong maternal values, typically sire heifers with these same traits. This really becomes apparent when you see cows putting back four to five replacement females into the herd over the course of their career and watching those females develop into cows that are as good and in many cases, better than their mothers. These strong maternal attributes have become the recipe for longevity; thus increasing lifetime productivity of the cows in the Lacombe Research herd. Residual Feed-Intake Research

With the knowledge that the highest input cost of any cow outfit was always going to be feed, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Senior Research Scientist Dr. John Basarab set out many years ago to explore the thought that a cow with superior ability to convert feed might pass those genetics on to her subsequent female progeny. His vision was if we have to feed, we might as well be feeding cattle with the ability to gain the most with the least amount of inputs. To tie in with this work, for the past seven years, an area of research at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Lacombe Research Centre that has been closely studied is RFI (Residual Feed-Intake) testing. The Centre has a twenty-four node RFI testing facility that tests between two hundred and two-hundred and fifty head each winter. Cattle are fed for a minimum of seventy days in this facility with a twenty-four hour monitoring of individual feed intake being available to researchers. Using these data and weights obtained at fourteen day intervals from beginning to end, Dr. Basarab is able to assign a numeric value for a heifer’s ability to convert feed. It is very important to note that at no point throughout this trial has a heifer’s RFI score been considered when it comes to selection. Having tested females for eight years and having multi-generational scores to compare, it is becoming apparent that Dr. Basarab’s hypothesis was correct. There is a strong genetic correlation for Residual Feed-Intake. Heifers will continue to be tested at Lacombe Research Centre as large numbers are necessary to validate these results under commercial conditions. A question often asked was, “Does a female’s RFI change over the course of her lifetime?” At Lacombe Research Centre, there are a group of cows that have survived the culling program and have enough longevity in the herd that they have qualified for re-testing. This re-testing process needs to be repeated for a number of years

to supply accurate data.

Feed Efficiency and RFI The Research and Findings of Dr. John Basarab Feed is the largest variable cost and an important determinant of profitability in beef production. In North America, 55 to 75% of the total costs of calf-to-beef production systems are associated with feed costs. The


The cattle herd (cows, bulls and breeding replacements) consumes 82% of the feed inputs in a calf-to-beef system where animals are harvested at 11-14 months of age and 63-64% of the feed inputs in a calf-to-beef system where animals are harvested at 19-23 months of age. In Irish grass-based calf-to-weanling and calf-to-beef systems the cow herd consumes about 85% and 50% of the total feed inputs, respectively. About two-thirds of the feed energy is required for body maintenance, and considerable animal-to-animal variation, independent of body size and growth, exists in maintenance requirements of cattle. Thus, improving feed efficiency through genetic selection holds significant opportunity for the beef industry. Traditionally, feed efficiency in beef cattle was defined as feed to gain ratio or feed conversion ratio (FCR). However, genetic evaluation of ratio traits like FCR or methane yield (g CH4/kg DMI) are problematic in that selection response is unpredictable, usually placing higher than expected emphasis on the trait with higher genetic variance. Further, the genetic correlation between the numerator (e.g., dry matter intake, DMI) and denominator (e.g., average daily gain, ADG) is positive, and therefore, selection for improved FCR has resulted in cattle that grow faster, have increased mature size, and increased maintenance and feed. As a result, efficiency measures that remove various known energy uses from feed intake, such as body weight and production, are being used within breeding programs. Residual feed intake, also referred to as net feed efficiency, is defined as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and its expected feed requirement for maintenance of body size and production. Low RFI in growing animals represents individuals with lower feed intake at equal body size and growth, with lower maintenance energy requirements and thus greater efficiency. More recently, RFI values have been adjusted for body fatness (RFIfat), thus attempting to render RFI independent of carcass fatness in slaughter cattle and later maturity or fattening in replacement heifers and bulls. Similarly, residual gain (RG) is adjusted for body size and DMI and represents animals with superior gain at equal levels of body weight and DMI, and a trait that combines both RFI and RG, referred to as residual intake and gain (RFI-RG), represents efficient, fast growing animals that consume less feed. These latter two measures of feed efficiency should also be adjusted for body composition using final off-test ultrasound backfat thickness, marbling score and/or ribeye area. These measures of feed efficiency are heritable (h2 = 0.26 to 0.43)and either moderately (RFI vs. RG, rg = -0.46, rp = -0.40) or highly (RG vs. RFI-RG, rg = 0.87, rp = -0.85) correlated with each other. In lactating dairy cows RFI is defined as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and its expected feed requirement for body weight, fat mobilization, as well as milk fat, protein and yield.

Repeatability of RFI Across Diets Because RFI is a relatively new trait, there are questions regarding its repeatability at different stages of an animal’s life, on different diets and in different environments. Moderate to high positive phenotypic (rp) and genetic (rg) correlations, and repeatability (r) have been reported between RFI measured on a grower diet and then again on a finisher diet (rg=0.55-0.62), and between post-weaning RFI in heifers and when measured again later in life as mature cows (rg=0.98). Lower repeatability estimates (rp=0.33-0.42) have been reported by Alberta researchers when RFI was measured between two successive feed intake test periods varying in dietary energy content (low vs. high

energy) and ambient temperature. In their study, 51-58% of the animals re-ranked by 0.5 SD (0.295 kg DM/day) from the grower phase to the finisher. This level of re-ranking for RFI, DMI and ADG occurred whether the diet changed from a grower to finisher diet or stayed the same from feeding period 1 to 2. Possible reasons for such re-ranking was due to 1) body weight and feed intake measurement error, 2) animal variation in response to compensatory gain, 3) animal variation in efficiency with animal maturity, and 4) animal variation in diet digestibility due to differences in feeding behavior, rate of passage and rumen microbial population. Preliminary data from the Lacombe Research Centre, Canada, also confirms the moderate to strong repeatability of RFI over different stages of the animal’s life. Replacement heifers identified as RFIfat and +RFIfat when they were 8-12 months of age and fed a 90:10% barley silage and barley grain diet (as fed; -0.373 vs. 0.365 kg DM/day) were also -RFIfat and +RFIfat when measured again as 4-7 year old cows and fed a 70:30% grass, hay and barley

straw cube diet (as fed; -0.375 vs. 0.459 kg DM/day) Thus, these results indicate that RFI, and presumably RG and RFI-RG, are consistent across different stages of an animal’s life.

RFI and Related Traits Growth, Carcass Traits, FCR and Feed Intake There are numerous studies examining the relationships of RFI with growth and carcass traits in cattle. Briefly, RFI is not related to pre- and post-weaning growth, body size and slaughter weight in beef cattle and the phenotypic and genetic correlations are near zero. Carcass traits are also poorly correlated to RFI, though some studies have reported a low to moderate correlation between RFI and carcass fatness (rp = 0.25 for grade fat; rp = -0.22 for lean meat yield) and RFI and marbling (rg = 0.17). However, when RFI is adjusted for body fatness using ultrasound back fat thickness (RFIfat), the correlations were near zero. Thus, selection for low RFIfat breeding stock will have little to no effect on progeny growth, frame size, mature size or carcass characteristics. RFI is moderately to highly correlated with feed intake (rp = 0.47-0.72; rg = 0.69-0.79) and FCR (rp = 0.46 to 0.70; rg = 0.66 to 0.88). This implies that selection for –RFIfat will decrease feed intake at equal levels of body weight, growth and body fatness, and will improve feed-to-gain ratio in feeder cattle and growing replacement heifers. These results also imply that selection for -RFIfat will decrease CH4 emissions (g/animal/day) since CH4 emissions are proportional to feed intake. A comprehensive analysis of Australian and Canadian data spanning a wider range in enteric CH4 emissions, diet quality, animal type (lactating dairy cows; growing beef steers) and CH4 measurement technique (SF6 in whole animal chambers; whole animal chambers) revealed strong positive, linear relationships between CH4 emissions (g/day) and DMI (Australian, R2 = 0.45, P<0.001; Canadian, R2 = 0.68, P<0.001). Generally, the higher the DMI, the higher the daily enteric CH4 emissions,as more substrate is available for rumen fermentation and more hydrogen is available for methanogenesis.


Feeding Behavior The genetic components of feeding behavior are important in animal breeding since they have economic and animal welfare implications, contribute to animal-to-animal variation in energetic efficiency, digestibility and enteric methane emissions. Feeding behaviors such as feeding duration, frequency and rate are moderately repeatable (r = 0.37-0.62) and heritable (h2 = 0.28–0.38). Furthermore, research from Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United States has reported mostly moderate to strong positive correlations (r = 0.08-0.62) of RFI and RFIfat to feeding duration, frequency and eating rate. Collectively, these results show that –RFIfat and +RFIfat cattle have distinctive diurnal patterns of feeding behavior, with inefficient cattle having 14-22% more daily feeding events than efficient cattle, thus expending 2-5% more energy in feeding activities. There are also implications for the direct measurement of enteric CH4 since CH4 emissions from the rumen are closely associated with feeding patterns; emissions are higher after feeding than at ruminating or resting. Thus, whole-day measurement repeated across many days (e.g., 35 days as recommended for DMI) are required to accurately reflect animal-to-animal differences in enteric CH4 production. In a recent review on feed efficiency and animal robustness, several researchers hypothesized that because efficient animals have decreased feeding event duration and frequency, they are less able to adapt to changes in environment conditions. However, observation of beef cows reared under extensive Canadian winter conditions has shown that cows that produced –RFI calves actually had higher back fat thickness with no differences in lifetime productivity compared with their herd mates that produced +RFI calves. In addition, –RFIfat heifers calving for the first time had lower calf death within 30 days of birth than +RFIfat heifers, suggesting that calves born to efficient cows have improved early life survival possibly due to lower maintenance requirements and more available nutrients for accumulation of body fat, better uterine environment and possibly improved calf passive immunity status. Indeed, recent unpublished research from the Lacombe Research

Centre confirm these findings in that –RFIfat cows gained more body fat and body weight than +RFIfat cows when both groups swath grazed forages for the first time during Canadian winters where night time ambient t e m p e r a t u r e s dropped below -20o C and animals grazed through the snow from November to March. Previous to this, both –RFI and +RFI young cows had been wintered together in smaller

holding areas and fed barley silage to meet their nutritional requirements. Thus, while efficient cattle have lower

feeding event duration and frequency and lower feed intake this does not mean that –RFIfat animals cannot compete or acquire forages during extensive grazing. Instead, it may imply that efficient animals are more adaptable and less susceptible to stress than +RFIfat or inefficient animals.

Fertility and Cow Productivity

Briefly, -RFI and +RFI cows and heifers were similar in culling, pregnancy, calving and weaning rate, calving pattern, calf birth weight, level of dystocia and kilogram of calf weaned per mating opportunity. However, -RFI cows calved 5-6 days later in the year than +RFI cows suggesting a delay in the onset of first estrus that may have delayed conception during the first breeding season. When RFI was adjusted for body fatness (final off-test back fat thickness; RFIfat), no differences were observed in percentage of RFIfat and +RFIfat heifers reaching puberty by 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15 months of age nor in the percentage of calves born by day 28 of the calving season (86.5 vs. 92.0, P=0.28). Calving difficulty, age at first calving, calf birth weight, calf pre-weaning ADG, calf actual and 200-d weaning weight and heifer productivity, expressed as kg calf weaned per heifer exposed to breeding, were also similar between -RFIfat and +RFIfat heifers. Fertility of young bulls, as measured by scrotal circumference, breeding soundness evaluation, calves born per sire and semen characteristics, for the most part has been unrelated to RFI, though several weak associations (rp=0.13-0.21) have been observed with sperm morphology and motility. These observations may also reflect the need to adjust RFI for off-test ultrasound backfat thickness and feeding behaviors in an effort to prevent the selection for later maturing bulls. Researchers at the Lacombe Research Centre also reported a lower calf death loss in RFIfat compared with +RFIfat heifers and cows, and suggested that the improved early life survival of progeny from -RFI mothers may be due to their improved feed efficiency resulting from more available nutrients and a better uterine environment compared with +RFI mothers. In addition, mothers that produced -RFI progeny consistently had 2-3 mm more back fat thickness, on average, over the 12th and 13th ribs and lost less weight

during early lactation (pre-calving to pre-breeding) than mothers that produced +RFI progeny, thus indicating that the lower maintenance requirement of -RFI heifers and cows results in the accumulation of body fat or the loss of less body fat and weight during stressful environmental periods.

Green Cattle (Methane Emission Testing)

Reduction of CH4 emissions from cattle is important because it represents 2-12% loss of feed energy and is linked to global warming. Enteric CH4 is produced during fermentation of feeds in both the reticulorumen and hindgut, with 95-98% excreted through the esophagus and lungs via brief 5-30 second eructations, burps and/or breaths and 2-5% via flatus. There are an increasing number of studies indicating that low RFI cattle (efficient) produce less CH4 (g CH4/day) than high RFI cattle (inefficient), primarily through lower feed intake at equal levels of production, body weight and fatness. In three of these studies, low RFI steers consumed less feed and produced 24.6-27.5% less CH4 than high RFI steers (Canadian, University of Alberta data, 97.5 vs. 129.3 g CH4/day; Canadian, University of Guelph data, 493.4 vs. 680.2 ml CH4/min; Australian data, 142 vs. 190 g CH4/day). Cow results were more variable and ranged from no difference between RFI phenotypes in CH4 production to 23.1% less CH4 produced for low RFI cows and their calves grazing high quality annual pasture during the winter (0.34±0.017 vs. 0.46±0.023 g CH4/kg LW/day; 13.1±1.63 vs. 14.0±1.50 kg DM/500 kg LW/day).

Thus, genetic selection for RFI, optimally through a multi-trait selection index, will result in slow incremental improvement to feed efficiency and methane intensity, with few antagonistic effects on traits of economic importance. Research continues at the Lacombe Research Centre and University of Alberta Kinsella Ranch using open path lasers and Infrared Spectrophotometers to measure methane emissions from cattle under practical production conditions.

Fall and Winter Grazing

On-going research at the Lacombe Research Centre includes the work on swath grazing being conducted by Dr. Vern Baron. The scope of Dr. Baron’s research is very broad in that all aspects of input costs, yield and utilization are being tabulated on those acres that have been committed to swath grazing. Lowering the costs associated with wintering beef cows is one of the areas in which Dr. Baron has specialized for some time. Winter feeding and production of conserved feed for cows are the most costly parts of beef calf production. Winter grazing eliminates baling, silage-making, hauling, feeding, processing and manure removal. Since 1997 barley, oats, triticale, corn and dormant or second cut grass have been grazed from November to March in different combinations and experiments, compared to a confined feeding system. Barley became the standard as producers considered it most easily used due to rapid maturity. To swath in September, barley had to be planted in late June. The savings, compared to traditional barley silage-straw diet, were 42%; $1.16 per cow-day compared to $2.00 per cow-

day. Most of the savings were in equipment and labour, but the barley forage yield was low because of the late planting. This led us to compare barley with triticale and corn, crops which we thought would utilize the growing season to advantage. Both triticale and corn yielded more than barley, with triticale being most consistent. If we compare the savings on a scale of grazing 100 cows for 100 winter days, all three crops saved money compared to confinement feeding. Compared to traditional barley silage-straw control, barley saved $7,500, 96 less hours of labour, 2,185 litres of diesel fuel and 10 acres of land; but, triticale saved $11,600, 122 hours of labour, 2,750 litres of diesel fuel and 38 acres of land. These extended grazing techniques have been adopted by about 35 to 50% of producers since 2000. Producers ask: “What happens to the cows?” It takes about 20% more daily energy to graze in the snow and survive in that cold and windy environment than if fed in a feedlot. As a 1500 lb. cow gets closer to calving, she requires more energy daily, but she is restricted in potential consumption due to fetal growth. For example, in November she may need 12 Mcal of energy per day for maintenance, while consuming 13 Mcal, but needs 15 Mcal per day in March, while consuming the same amount. Thus we find most cows lose some weight

and condition during winter grazing. Cows in a feedlot gain weight. We found that the more energy dense corn swath allowed cows to maintain better body condition than triticale and barley. Winter-grazed cows must be monitored for condition, but we have had no problems in calving or re-breeding.

re some breeds better at winter grazing than others? We don’t really have that answer, but most of our cows are rated for residual feed intake (RFI) efficiency and we have followed them for a few years of grazing. Efficient cows lose less weight and maintain body condition better than inefficient cows. This leads us to believe that efficient RFI cows may be able to withstand stressful environmental conditions better than inefficient ones because they have an improved energy balance. Here at Lacombe, because we winter graze and study cow efficiency, we can determine these implications.


Carcass & Meat Quality Testing

Almost all of the progeny of the beef herd not used as replacement animals become part of the ongoing research efforts to improve beef carcass and meat quality characteristics. Since the original beef grading system was developed in 1972, Lacombe Research Centre has contributed all the necessary research underpinning ongoing changes to the Beef Grading system, including National Beef Cut-Outs, development of the grade ruler, re-introduction of marbling, development of colour standards for B4 carcasses, and reduction of back fat requirements for B1 carcasses. Research following the BSE crisis in 2003 supplied the necessary system for scoring bone ossification during grading such that Canada could meet or exceed market demands for animals guaranteed less than 20 mo of age (Japan). As animals greater than 30 months of age (OTM), including cull cows, were no longer allowed into the USA, considerable research was performed on OTM and cull cows to determine their value as manufacturing beef. The distinguishing quality characteristics of eleven major muscles were profiled to determine their potential for use in value added products. Lacombe Research Centre worked with the beef industry to develop recommended ageing times for beef primals, labelling nomenclature and cooking recommendations for retail beef, and roasting recommendations for consumers. Since 1995, the Lacombe Research Centre has participated in every benchmarking study (1995, 2001, 2009) undertaken by the beef industry to determine industry improvements in product quality at retail, and is happy to report that there has been a significant improvement in tenderness in retail beef. The ability to conduct research from the live animal management on the farm to the consumer’s plate has contributed to significant gains in understanding of factors which control meat quality attributes such as tenderness, fatty acid composition, meat colour and meat flavour. The

Centre has also worked with industry partners over the years to assist with the development of platform technologies of benefit to the industry such as marination, hot-boning, pasteurization, electrical stimulation, modified carcass suspension, post-slaughter chilling, and novel packaging systems for improving carcass and meat quality.

Research emphasis on molecular genetics has placed additional pressure on the Centre to assess the animal phenotype with respect to carcass and quality attributes in real time, rather through tried and true, but time consuming, laboratory methods. Hence, meat researchers at the Centre (Aalhus, Dugan, Juárez, López-Campos, Prieto, Uttaro) have been working on the development of equipment and algorithms to improve the timeliness and accuracy of predictive methods. Two of these methods currently under development are dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) for estimating carcass lean meat yield and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for on-line prediction of quality characteristics.

Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptometry (DEXA)

In the early 1990’s, the beef industry decided beef producers should be paid according to what they produced through the assessment of lean meat content in Canada’s top grades of beef. The Canadian yield algorithm is based on prediction of total carcass lean using two prediction characteristics as follows: Lean percentage = 63.65 + 1.05 (muscle score) − 0.76 (grade fat) (Canadian Beef Grading Agency 2013). The Canadian yield algorithm was subsequently developed through an expensive, time-consuming and labour-intensive National Beef Cut-out (1993). Lean yield algorithms have been successful during the last two decades in enhancing a lean advantage over fatter carcasses. However, with time and breeding, cattle change, so lean yield equations need to be periodically revised or updated using modern populations of cattle. In addition there is a need to establish relationships amongst equations based on primals, sub primals and trimmed retail cuts, and the relationship between the different yield assessments (e.g. lean yield Canadian Beef Grading vs. % closely trimmed retail cuts USDA) to make the appropriate conversions at the time of trade.In an effort to further understand shifts in the composition

of beef carcasses and develop improved lean yield prediction equations, AAFC-Lacombe has partnered with the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC), the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA), the Canadian Beef Grading Agency (CBGA) and Livestock Gentec to develop a new platform technology for use in the beef industry.


Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry has been developed over the last 20 years by the medical industry to measure body composition in humans. This technique has the capability of measuring bone mineral content, bone mineral density, lean tissue mass and fat tissue mass, and thereby calculate percentage of fat. Advancements in the technology in terms of relatively low cost, speed of data collection, reliability and ease of use, compared with other technologies such as computer tomography, now make it practical to develop DEXA as an indirect method of estimation of carcass composition in meat animals. Measuring body composition by DEXA technology is based on the differential attenuation of low and high energy X-rays by fat, non-fat and bone tissues. To date, DEXA has been used successfully with poultry, swine, sheep and calves but has not been explored for predicting whole carcass composition in mature beef. Due to the much larger size of beef carcasses, part to whole compositional relationships must be developed through DEXA scanning and manual dissection of individual beef primal cuts. The technology is being tested at the Lacombe Research Centre over the next two years to develop robust equations to attain precision and accuracy in assessing beef carcass composition. The results are promising, with a strong fit between total cut-out values and DEXA measures for fat (R2=0.96) and lean (R2= 0.82). For comparison, a perfect fit would be R2 = 1.00. Eventual improvements to lean yield algorithms resulting from routine use of this non-destructive technology could replace the need for expensive and sporadic National Beef Cut-outs. This would allow for regular grade algorithm updates as the genetic composition of the slaughter cattle population shifts or market needs change. In addition, by developing the platform DEXA technology, a powerful tool will be available to apply to future genetic and production efficiency research, resulting in a fundamental advantage for the Canadian beef industry.

Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)

NIRS has been successfully applied to estimate the amount or proportion of major constituents (moisture, fat and protein) of meat and meat products. In fact, these bench top NIRS procedures have been approved by the international committee for validating analytical procedures (AOAC) and are currently being used in industry. Beyond this, NIRS can also be used to categorize meat (e.g. beef) that is fresh vs. that which has been frozen and thawed, meat from different species, and meat from animals fed different diets, as well as detection of hamburger adulteration. Recent ALMA funded studies carried out at the Lacombe Research Centre (AAFC) using beef have shown the potential of NIRS to predict the proportion of fatty acids with important human health-related benefits such as omega-3, rumenic (c9,t11-CLA) and vaccenic (t11-18:1) acids. Further investigation into NIRS potential on hogs is now underway in a joint study between the University of Alberta and the Lacombe Research Centre with funding from the Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund Ltd. (ACIDF). This research is testing an on-line NIRS fibre-optic probe which, despite the challenging operational environment in abattoirs such as fluctuations in temperature and humidity, could significantly improve the ability to monitor and control meat processing via remote on-line detection. Additionally, the use on-line of a fibre-optic probe enables measurements to be made simply by placing the probe on the

intact sample itself, with no previous sample treatment required; the on-line probe may thus provide rapid simultaneous prediction of various meat quality criteria on-line in a commercial environment.

In addition to that, the Lacombe Research Centre, through financial support from the Canadian Beef Cattle Industry Science Cluster, has recently shown the potential of NIRS technology to objectively assist in segregating dark cutters (B4 grade carcasses) from normal beef (A grade carcasses) with an overall accuracy of 95%. Further development and application of this technology to evaluation of quality characteristics in the beef industry is ongoing.


Farm Fair International On Friday November 8, 2013 the Lacombe Research Centre transported five bred heifers to Farm Fair International as part of a joint display with our industry partner, Livestock Gentec (an Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions Centre based at the University of Alberta). The objective of the display was to highlight our ongoing research in the area of cow efficiency. The heifers selected for the display had been previously RFI (residual feed intake, net feed efficiency) tested and molecular breeding values had been established to illustrate the possibilities that exist in the future. These include pre-determining progeny characteristics based on their parents’ DNA testing and predetermining their genetic outcomes without having to do the breeding; this is empowering, because matings can be planned. In addition to Lacombe, Olds College and the research herd at the University of Alberta’s Kinsella Research Station were also invited to participate. Producer interest was steady Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, as producers stopped by our booth, had their questions answered and were given an explanation as to how this research stands to benefit the industry. The research teams were also, for the first time, invited to consign their bred heifers into the commercial heifer sale; proceeds from the sale go back into the respective research programs. Lacombe’s heifers were very well received by industry and received the second highest price of the sale, being topped only by the group that had won the commercial heifer show. The display and the sale were well attended and were an illustration of the exciting times that exist in the current beef cattle industry.

Conducting quality research for commercial cattlemen has been an area of focus at the Lacombe Research Centre for some time. A commitment to explore new ideas associated with genetics, cost cutting and management defines their role in this industry. Pushing the limits on the science side to discover new and innovative means of beef cattle management continues to be a top priority at the Lacombe Research Centre.

The “Angus - Champion of the World 2013” and “Angus - Miss World 2013”

The “Angus - Champion of the World 2013” and “Angus - Miss World 2013” competitions were judged from December 1- 7, 2013. The competition consisted of entries from 43 countries and evaluated by judges from 30 different countries. It was run via the “Angus Breeder” page on Facebook and the www.angusbreeder.net website.

Ask any question about calving and bred cow management and there will be no shortage of old wives tales, conjecture, and opinions. From time to time I like to review the literature to see if there have been any scientific studies to support or refute what we believe. You might be surprised at what I find.

Dystocia means difficult calving which can range from a very prolonged spontaneous calving to prolonged or severe assisted extraction. Any calving requiring a calf puller or a caesarean section would certainly qualify as a dystocia. We all know that assistance in the form of a light pull is often provided when it would have normally not been required - perhaps someone was there, or there was a reason for speeding up the process. These cases are more appropriately called assisted calvings rather than dystocias.

The number one cause of dystocia in cattle is feto-maternal disproportion (aka. feto-pelvic disproportion) and is the primary reason caesarean sections are performed. Heifers are more likely to experience this cause of dystocia than all other age groups combined. The two determinants of feto-maternal disproportion are calf birth weight and maternal pelvic size with calf birth weight being the most significant contributor. Birth weight accounts for 50% of the variance in dystocia, whereas pelvic size accounts for only 5 - 10%. These numbers seem reasonable since it is widely accepted that measuring the pelvic width and height (pelvimetry) is probably only useful for culling the very smallest heifers. Pelvimetry has fallen out of favour as a management practice largely due to an inability to predict dystocia. Small heifers may have small calves and large heifers may have large calves. Pelvic area at calving has been shown to be more predictable of dystocia than a pre-breeding measurement. Effective pelvic area can increase by as much as 15% at calving in heifers due to increased mobility of iliosacral joints, pelvic ligament relaxation, abdominal straining and changes in posture. However, using pelvimetry at calving as a replacement selection tool seems pointless. These facts support the position that reducing calf birthweight is a more effective way to reduce dystocia then selecting heifers based on pelvic size.

The occurrence of dystocia in beef cattle is declining

in Canada as evidenced by the substantial decrease in c-sections performed by veterinarians today compared to 15-20 years ago which was, in turn, modest in comparison to the 1970’s and 80’s. Calf birth weight can be influenced by many factors: gestation length, age of the cow, sex of the calf, sire, strain, breed, nutrition and climate; however, genetics accounts for 60% of the variation in birth weight. The use of Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) to select sires with more modest birth weights deserves most of the credit for the reduction in dystocia. Calf birth weight is greatly influenced by gestation length. Two-thirds of calf birth weight is accrued during the last trimester with an estimated increase in calf birth weight of 0.3 – 0.4 kg/ day during the last month of gestation. Typically, male calves weigh 9% more than females; single calves 8% more than twins and calves from cows can weigh a whopping 15% more than those from heifers - average calf birth weight is reportedly highest at the third calving in Holsteins.

Reduced feeding during the last trimester will result in a negligible reduction in calf birth weight, but may increase the occurrence of dystocia due to insufficient uterine contractions and inadequate relaxation of pelvic ligaments. Calves may also be stillborn or too weak to stand; especially, when protein has been inadequate. I often hear of newborn calves apparently suffocating due to membranes over their nose. It is my opinion that these calves were most likely stillborn with poor third trimester nutrition being the suspected cause when there are a few to several occurrences within a herd.

Cold weather (< - 5oC), made even worse by wind chill, during the last trimester has been shown to increase calf birth weight and dystocia in cattle. Increased feed intake, increased thyroid hormone concentration, increased blood and nutrient flow to the uterus, and increase gestation length are all linked to cold climatic conditions. I suspect that we may see slightly higher average birth weights on the Canadian prairies this spring.

Fetal malposition occurs relatively infrequently (<5% of calvings), but is the number 1 cause of dystocia in all age groups of cattle with the obvious exception of heifers. Malpresented calves are at a 5 times higher risk of stillbirth probably because they are not noticed until it is too late. Herds that have a higher occurrence of twin

births should closely monitor calving cows - multiple births are at 4 time’s greater risk of resulting in a malpresentation than are single births.

Uterine inertia or a lack of uterine contraction may occur secondary to prolonged dystocia or may be primary due to low calcium, low magnesium, old age, lack of exercise or preterm calving. Providing appropriate mineral supplementation to gestating cows is preventative.

Uterine torsion (twisted uterus) is uncommon, but can often be missed as cows may only show subtle signs associated with calving. Risk factors are excessive fetal movement as the fetus moves into the birth position, uterine instability and deep abdomens. Large, deep bodied cows are more likely to experience uterine torsion. Predisposing circumstances include large calves, male calves, debility and a lack of exercise.

Environmental disturbance at calving such as continuous presence of an observer, confinement, and overcrowded calving areas can lead to a reduction in uterine contractions, insufficient cervical dilatation, and poor abdominal

contractions with the result being prolonged calving and dystocia. Moving cows and heifers during Stage 1 of calving can increase the risk of dystocia and stillbirth. Stage 1 occurs 4 to 24 hours prior to the onset of actual calving (Stage 2) and is when cervical dilation occurs. For the most part, Stage 1 goes unnoticed except for occasional isolation from the herd or signs of discomfort. Movement during Stage 2, the onset of which is indicated by elevation of the tail or the appearance of fetal membranes, does not appear to be harmful.

Don’t be in a hurry to provide assistance! Dystocia rates decline and calf viability is improved if adequate time is allowed for cervical and vulva dilation. A common recommendation made by veterinarians is to intervene after 30 to 40 minutes of active straining without apparent progress. Extractions are best made at a steady pace allowing tissues to stretch rather than tear. Plan ahead – most difficult pulls result in the cow falling into recumbency. Having a rope halter on her and the ability to put her on side can be hugely beneficial. Most importantly – Be Safe!

Official Opening of Angus CentralDecember 12, 2013: for immediate release

Rocky View County, AB — After three years of planning and preparation, the Canadian Angus Association (CAA) officially opened their first member-owned national headquarters, Angus Central. While the Association moved to many provinces, Angus Central, located just north of Calgary, is the first building owned by the Association.

More than 200 Angus members, vendors to the Association and industry partners were in attendance as the doors opened to this exciting new building. An official ribbon cutting by the CAA Board of Directors was a highlight. All past presidents in attendance also shared a special photo representing the historical development of the breed coupled with their futuristic vision of maintaining the Association in a financial situation to purchase such a property.

“One of the policies that the Boards before us established was a fund for rainy days or a building,” said David Bolduc, past president of the CAA. “I think those people deserve most of the credit for this building we now have today. My board purchased the land for Angus Central, but without that initial governance policy to set that money aside, we wouldn’t be opening this today. It’s easy to have a vision of the future when you are standing on the shoulders’ of titans.”

Junior members along with families representing more than 100 years of raising Angus cattle were present representing provinces coast to coast. The new showcase of Angus history featured years of artifacts which make up the breed’s past, including letters from the QueenMother, certificate seals decades old, herd books from more than 100 years ago, and much more.

Current CAA President Kevin Blair summarized the future of the Angus breed as being all about the youth. He asked those in attendance “Who is going to back fill behind the older generation as they retire in the next five to 10 years?”

“I want us to embrace and encourage our youth by supporting them financially and mentally,” said Blair. “So, here’s to our future. Welcome to Angus Central.”

The Canadian Angus Foundation (CAF) was established in 1992 under the presidency of Bill Jackson. Through his leadership, Doug Fee, past CAA CEO and current CAF chairman, credits the board for creating the charitable arm of the Association.

“We have an opportunity to celebrate the history and foundation of the Angus breed in Canada and now we have a centre in which to do so,” said Fee.

The CAF launched three new initiatives during the official opening to assist in financially building a stronger Foundation. Angus Roots includes an iron tree with leaves engraved with donors’ names. The Hall of Honour and The Breeders’ Choice feature silhouettes of people and animals to recognize highly respected breed builders or loved ones and standouts, respectively. Morethan $14,000 was raised during the official opening.

“We have created membership equity through this building where in the past rent has been a significant portion of our budget,” said Rob Smith, CAA CEO. “I want to summarize the official opening in two words — home run.”

The Canadian Angus Association is Canada’s largest purebred beef breed organization. The Association represents 3,000 members across Canada for the purposes of registering and recording the pedigrees of purebred Angus cattle in the closed Herd Book and promoting the breed across Canada. The member-approved mandate is to maintain breed registry, breedpurity and provide services that enhance the growth and position of the Angus breed.

hided cattle that qualify) have increased over the years and accelerated in the past five years to near 20 percent.

DePompei said increased supply from Canadian producers fits with the drive among processors to sell more of each branded carcass under the premium label.

“We tend to do a good job selling the middle meat items in Canada,” she said, “but we need more end meat and especially grind sales to help pull more product from each carcass into a CAB box.”

As sales grow, so does every aspect of the business from the end product to premiums in cattle sales to packers. The number of licensed CAB partners in retail and foodservice increased by more than 15 percent, reaching 1,524 total partners by the year’s end.

With the 2014 fiscal year beginning in October, CAB has already seen promising numbers, DePompei said.The first two months show a 6.8-percent increase, about half a million pounds, above the same period last year.“We’re producing a lot more of our CAB in Canada,” DePompei said. “The big growth in 2013 is on track to continue in every sector of the country’s beef industry.”

Record growth in Canada for a brand owned and operated by producers and serving all who use Angus genetics spells opportunity not hampered by various trade issues.

The Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand has been sold in Canada for more than 30 years, but since the first production began in licensed Alberta plants 14 years ago, those sales have trended higher, tripling in the last 10 years (see graph).

The 2013 fiscal year saw CAB overall sales reach a seventh consecutive record high, 865 million pounds. The Canadian net total of 42 million pounds, almost 40 percent of CAB’s international market, represents the ninth consecutive annual increase.

“I attribute a lot of that to strong retail growth,” said Emily DePompei, the brand’s assistant director of international marketing.

Licensed retail volume grew by 25 percent while food service volume increased by 11 percent.

In April 2012, Real Canadian Superstore signed on to a licensee partnership with CAB and quickly established the brand with its customers. Superstore has been a large part of 2013 growth and will likely continue that with more than 100 stores nationwide, DePompei said.

Total CAB business in Canada is up by more than 10 percent from the last fiscal year that ended September 30. What’s more, 2013 was the first time since 2005 that Canadians produced and sold more CAB product sold than U.S.-produced and sold in Canada.

Another way of looking at it: nearly 10,000 more Angus-type cattle qualified for the brand in Canada in fiscal 2013, up 26 percent.

Still, that accounts for only about half of sales, as some 21 million pounds must come in from the U.S. to meet demand. If all of that production came from Canada, it could mean premiums paid on more than another 100,000 Angus cattle.

Manitoba Angus Association holds AGM

The Manitoba Angus Association held their Annual Meeting at the Victoria Inn on January 4th. It was another frigid day and may have helped contribute to a smaller attendance than usual. However, those attending the meeting enjoyed the presentation by Dr. Les Byers from Vegreville, AB about genetically enhanced EPDs. They also received lots of interesting information from the Canadian Angus Assoc. CEO Rob Smith, including a virtual tour of the new Canadian Angus Office in Calgary, “Angus Central.” Lois McRae completes her 6 year term as Canadian Director in June at the National Angus Convention in Moose Jaw. She has served on the MB Angus Association board for the past 12 years consecutively and 4 years prior to that. Lois was presented with a token of appreciation and thanked for all of her hard work in representing the Manitoba membership at the Canadian board level. Shawn Birmingham was elected by acclamation to be our new Canadian Angus Director from Manitoba. He begins his term at the National Convention. Other new board members elected were Nicholas Bray from Eddystone, Brett McRae from Brandon and Raina Syrnyk (Junior Director) from Ethelbert, MB. Thanks to Bonnie Glasman and Naomi Best for their contributions on the board over the past two years.

Manitoba Angus Association selects “Keen Grain & Livestock of Marquette, MB” as their Commercial Producer for 2013

Keen Grain and Livestock is a mixed grain and beef operation transitioning into its 3rd generation at Marquette, MB. The original farm was started in 1942 by Martin’s father, James Keen. Today the farm is being operated by Martin and Sandra Keen, along with 3 of their 4 children; daughter Sarah and her husband Pat (who works off farm – They have one son and one on the way); son Jamie, who works full time on the farm and daughter Marci ( works off farm as an agronomist). Our other daughter Kelli and her husband are not involved in the farm. The farm maintains a herd of 400 plus commercial cows consisting of 300 Black Angus cows and 100 Limousin cross cows. As well it crops around 3500 acres of cereals and oilseeds, 300 acres of corn silage, soybeans and has 1500 acres of forage and pastureland. They try to maintain a fairly young herd of cows by retaining 75 head of heifer calves every year and culling fairly hard. If a cow doesn’t have a calf with her to go to pasture she is sold. Same thing goes for cows with anything less than almost perfect udders and feet. They retain the rest of their calves and background them until around 900 lbs. which is usually mid- February ( 10 -11 months of age) when they are sold via off farm tender bid to finishing lots in either eastern or western Canada or some years the US. In addition to their own calves they buy and feed an additional 800-1000 feeder calves annually that usually come in at 500- 600 lbs. and are back grounded to 900 lbs. as well. The cows remain in the respective age groups until they are 5. This helps to reduce competition and help manage the herd. This also helps with breeding and calving management. Calving starts in March with the replacement heifers, and followed by the second and third calvers 3 weeks later. Then following suit with the older cows calving mid April, where most years the weather can be more favourable and the cows are able to calve out on the pasture. They feed a mixture of corn, alfalfa, and barley silage with the addition of either barley grain or screenings, or a screening pellet with added supplement. The cow herd receives about 50% of their total ration in dry forage, either a grass/alfalfa mix or an oat or barley green feed with the addition of the silage blend. The feeder cattle receive nearly 90% of the ration in the form of silage in the TMR and 10% of the TMR being dry

serving several years as president. While Jack’s responsibilities include all of the AI work, Barb also works full time on the farm. She does all the bookkeeping and takes care of the heat detection in the spring while Jack is breeding cows. While they do much of the work themselves they also have hired help. Brookmore Angus has promoted and sold both bulls and females for breeding stock. They began selling bulls at Douglas, Roblin and Gunton bull test stations and Brandon Bull Sale. More recently this is the 19th year they have sold bulls through the Cattleman’s Connection Bull Sale. From this sale they have sold bulls across Manitoba and into Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and North Dakota. In the past they have also sold females into every province in Canada except the Maritimes as well as England, Scotland, Japan Russia and Kazakhstan. Presently they market their females through the Keystone Klassic Sale in Brandon, the Seriously Black Sale near Sylvan Lake, Alberta and by private treaty at the farm.The offspring of many of the Brookmore animals have gone on to do well in the show ring. Progeny are showing up more frequently at shows and sales across Canada. Most recently the Grand Champion Female at the MB Angus 2013 summer show was purchased from Brookmore Angus. Also this year, the Reserve Grand Champion Black Angus Female at Agribition, shown by Remitall Cattle Co. was out of a Brookmore cow. The Manitoba Angus Association is very proud of the job Jack and Barb have done promoting their Manitoba cattle, and therefore feel they are a good choice to be named The Manitoba Angus Purebred Breeder for 2013.

forage mixed in the form of a tub ground grass, alfalfa, and straw mix. They like the Angus breed for their operation because they are easy fleshing, easy keeping medium framed cattle. As cows they are well tempered and good mothers. Cows can raise good sized calves on good forage without sacrificing their own body condition on average years without having to supplement with creep feed. Over the last 10 years they have been purchasing 2 or 3 new bulls every year from Brookmore Angus for the heifers. The bulls fit well into their program for their heifers then are used to breed the older cows as 2 year olds. As they go forward into the farm’s 3rd generation they hope to be able to continue to grow the operation and keep it as a family operation.

Brookmore Angus Awarded Manitoba Angus Purebred Breeder for 2013

Jack and Barb Hart from Brookdale, MB have been raising registered Black Angus cattle since 1976. They changed their breeding plans at Brookmore Angus in 1986, when they decided to build and improve the herd by using AI genetics. This decision allowed them to use semen of a variety of the best proven bulls available. Today they continue to use AI extensively and the pedigrees of many of their females contain several generations of well recognized bulls in the Angus breed. In 2013 they calved out 300 head. In the 1980’s and early 90’s, Jack volunteered for 17 years on the Manitoba Angus board of Directors,

Mother Nature has been less than nurturing so far this winter, from extreme cold and snow in the west to ice storms in the east. This morning on the way to the office the radio reported we are fifteen degrees colder than seasonal. I understand how this type of weather can question the mind of a beef producer, especially one who has been doing it for 30 or 40 years. Last winter was no picnic either and pushed several producers to the point where they decided enough was enough and the cows were sold. This winter could have the same effect on some; however the prices in 2014 will make it harder to walk away from your beef cows. All indicators are the prices experienced through the fall are merely the infant start of what is to come. The cow/calf producer was able to sell calves this fall at a sustainable profit and equally importantly the guy buying them is able to feed them at a much lesser cost of gain than last year and all indications are he will be able to pad his bank account a little on this turn of calves, I’m sure most of them need a little padding after having the stuffing beat out of them a few times over the past several years.

Things have not looked this positive in the Canadian beef industry in the last twelve years, when you combine the lowest inventory in a half century, the cheapest feed grains in several years and the loonie getting smothered by the green back. The chartists say the course is set to stay the same in the predictable future, feeder and fat cattle futures have not yet broken through the top and grain and the Canadian dollar have not hit bottom yet.

They say history repeats itself and that everything is cyclical and I’m becoming a believer as I have experienced it myself in my short career. Grain farming from 1994 to 2004, the years when I had good crops, I had trouble getting them to market and marketing them for a profit was rarely in the cards. The years when frost and excessive moisture effected

crop quality the buyers did not want it either and if had not been for the cows at home to add value to excessive, tough or frozen grain through those years, the soup would have gotten awful thin. Of the farmers who did not own cows in those years, many bought some or custom feed feeder cattle in trade for the grain inventories they had backlogged in their yards. I know the years during BSE were the opposite for many producers when their beef cows became worth significantly less and world grain inventories dipped giving rise to commodity prices. However, the cycle has started to change again and the profits are starting to shift towards beef production, grain is abundant and just an average crop next year will keep it that way. The cost of production and risk associated with grain farming will test many younger producers’ grit and credit, especially the ones who tore out dad’s or grandpa’s fences on the marginal land because they did not want to feed cows on these frigid winter mornings. For those of you who have stuck with your cows, like your wife, for better and for worse, will get a warm and tingly feeling when you sell cattle in 2014 and you will not have to wait long. If you background your calves or even just the heifers you will be glad you did.

As we move into bull sale season remember the thing that can have the quickest and deepest impact in your calves and wallet is the quality of the herd bulls you select. Good quality bulls are not an expense, they are an investment! You cannot grow a bumper crop without quality fertilizer.

While transacting a bit of trade with Robert Ballantyne, who was one of the greatest Galloway breeders in the world; then established a very successful herd of purebred Black Angus, remarked that being in the Angus breed was exciting. “ Most breeders do not realize the huge and dynamic gene pool for each and everyone who is interested in the breed that is available, whether one is a seedstock producer or a commercial cow-calf producer. One can raise little ones, big ones, high marbling, heavy muscled, easy calving and so on. Angus being one of the oldest breeds in the world is the most progressive and scientific of all their contemporaries. Producing quality Angus seedstock is relatively simple because you can build genetics in your herd that have predictably, be competitive and marketable, due to the vast gene pool available to each and everyone who chooses to be a part of the breed. There is a bonus, since the Angus brood cow is the most fertile and profitable cow in the industry!” Since these facts have been proven over a century or so, I do not need to expand on the virtues of the breed.

Ballantyne is right! Whether you pursue Black Angus or Red Angus, the availability to new genetics is randomly available for your program and affordable herd building seedstock are marketed virtually every weekend each spring and fall. The question is, why would one want to enter a breed or industry in which there is so much competition? Angus is the lowest risk breed to venture into with the highest up-side potential. First and foremost, Angus is the only breed that has a successful marketing program selling a certified branded product, not only in the United States and Canada, but throughout the major beef producing countries around the globe. Demand for certified product is strong and continues to increase annually and globally at a brisk steady pace; therefore, supply requires inventories of Angus cows in the producer sector. Secondly, the Angus breed has the largest purebred population of registered animals in the world; therefore, it has the highest degree of accuracy in regards to predictability in all animal traits especially for carcass values as a result of their Certified Angus Beef program. Simply put, the Angus breed has the right product and the right plan in place for the producer, feeder, and packer and it all starts in the lab of the purebred breeder designing basics for the chain.

The Final Word


Change is inevitable and whether we like it or not, we will have to accept it. Some of us remember the old crank telephone which progressed to dial, then touch-tone, then bag-phone mobile right up to today’s smart-phone which can virtually do everything except pay the bill for its usage. The purebred livestock industry has seen a similar progression from Record of Performance (ROP) to Expected Progeny Differences (EPD’s) and now Genomic-Enhanced EPD’s (GE-EPD). For those who do not believe in EPD’s, get used to it, simply because that is what’s in store for the years ahead.

Genomics is the study of organism genomes that include mapping DNA sequences. Every organism, including humans, has a genome that contains all the biological information needed to build and maintain a living example of that organism. The biological information contained in a genome is encoded in its DNA and is divided into discrete units called genes. A genetic trait marker is a specific variation of DNA sequence that can be used to identify a particular difference in specific traits such as tenderness, performance or marbling. More than one genetic trait can be identified from a single sample, and the more tests a lab can conduct, the more information they can supply the customer. Genomic testing requires examination of hair, tissue, blood or semen to indentify DNA markers with the easiest method, pulling hair from the tail of the animal. DNA testing only needs to be done one time on each animal, as the DNA of an animal never changes. This enhancement of our current EPD’s will increase accuracy and most importantly, predict trait selection at a young age which will influence matings and selections. Predicting and producing more of the right kind in volume will eliminate a degree of risk at all levels. The packers and feeding industry are the most interested observers and several are getting involved. In a tight margin industry, getting a load of fats out thirty days earlier or knowing that the load will yield the highest grade makes a difference in the price paid down the chain. The selection and the price paid for bulls by the cow/calf producer will be in a direct correlation to the requirements of the feeder; therefore, it is the requirement of the purebred breeder to produce new enhanced genetics for the rest of the chain. That takes numbers!

Although genomic selection sounds scary, it isn’t, as it is just an accurate tool. Structure, temperament, soundness of limb and phenotype will still play a large role but more and more you will have to analyze the numbers at the bottom of the pedigree and use them to assist with your decision. Genomics will allow you to breed better cattle in a shorter time period and don’t be surprised in the next decade that a feeder wants to see the pedigrees of the sires of the steer calves he is going to feed and the price he will pay.

After a bumper harvest and a good fall run, it is time to look ahead to another “bull year” in the cattle business. Purebred breeders, now is the time to look at your numbers in the cow herd and the herd bulls you have them bred to. Set goals for the areas that need improvement and plan to eliminate the females whose EPD’s do not fit your plans. Commercial producers, start looking at the numbers and do not be afraid to ask questions about what all the numbers represent simply because normally fifty percent of your calves are female. Look at this in the same way you use all the gadgets on your Smart-phone!
