Session #1 9:45 am – 12:00 pm

Lee-Anne Geseron

Geseron Employment Consulting

Strategic Decision Making

Every day our choices reveal not only our own style preferences but they reveal our core values. Through this workshop the participants will develop knowledge that will increase compassion and promote respect for the differences among us. Through active group discussion and personal reflection participants will learn first-hand what drives individuals to make decisions and how to motivate themselves, and others, to make strategic decisions while living a life of personal excellence.

Jonathan Bennett

LARIDAE

The Power of Storytelling

Stories are powerful. They connect, inspire, enlighten and teach. They feel as good to give, as to receive. They are shareable; they are free. So when it comes to volunteer management, using storytelling in a purposeful way drives recruitment and retention. Stories keep everyone connected to the mission, to the "why". Join non-profit management consultant, speaker, and novelist, Jonathan Bennett and learn, through doing, how you can "harvest" your organization's best stories.

Jason Dykstra

L3 Group

Diffusing the Conflict Bomb

What’s something that all human beings have in common? Conflict! While the majority of us think of all the negatives that come with conflict, there are lots of positives as well. This interactive workshop will explore your view on conflict and how your reactions to it will determine its outcome. We’ll build on your understanding and provide tools you can use to turn that conflict situation into a creative solution – assisting you to turn today’s vision into tomorrow’s reality.

Those who want to encourage and cultivate the partnership between volunteers and staff will benefit from socially locating themselves considering a generational lens and learning about and understanding the perspective of people from other generations. The professional who is looking to network and engage in lively dialogue will thrive in this workshop which includes lots of discussion, cooperative exercises and multimedia.

Session #2 2:30 – 4:45 pm

Cody Palmer-Almond

Ontario Volunteer Centre Network

Become a PREB-Ontario Certified User

PREB-Ontario is a Volunteer Experience Recognition Program that supports capacity-building for the voluntary sector in Ontario through standardized volunteer recognition practices. A set of online proprietary tools, PREB-Ontario is used to prepare personalized, official PREB certificates that recognize volunteers for their skills demonstrated during their volunteer experiences. Participants will receive access to, and training on, the PREB-Ontario system. Please bring your own laptop or tablet for use during the session.

Patricia Baigent

Canadian Mental Health Assn –Oxford Branch

Transforming Compassion Fatigue with Self-Compassion

Self-compassion is a way of emotionally recharging our batteries. Without self-compassion those of us who work and volunteer in helping fields can minimize the need to care for ourselves; we give beyond our capacity and become vulnerable to vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and eventually burn out. This workshop will discuss the merits of cultivating self-compassion as a means to build resiliency and protect the mental health of the caregiver.

Taming Your Inner Reptile: Leading with Emotional Intelligence

Have you ever bristled at a colleague’s comment, gotten defensive and then later realized you completely overreacted? These moments or “emotional hijacks” happen all the time and often are the root cause of workplace misunderstandings. Learning how to first recognize and then manage your own emotional triggers is an important skill for any leader. Join Dr. Marshall for an engaging and lively session about the inner workings of our brains and gain control of your “reptile.”

Michelle Davis

Creating Safer Workplaces for Volunteers and Others

Unpaid staff, including volunteers, interns and placement students, may feel vulnerable or unsafe at work because they are unaware of safety protocols and policies, their roles and responsibilities, as well as that of their supervisors. By taking part in discussions, reviewing case studies and completing small group activities such as safety mapping, workshop participants will have the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences while also learning from others in the workshop.

Session #3 9:45 am – 12:00 pm

Sammy Feilchenfeld

Volunteer Toronto

Human Rights & Diversity in your Volunteer Program

Through an interactive exploration of the Ontario Human Rights Code and its protected grounds, we’ll explore the variety of ways you can best represent your organization’s community through your volunteer program. We’ll look at case studies for diversity and cultural competency in volunteer recruitment and leadership, and develop great ways to increase representation while ensuring you’re following the guidelines and legal rules of the OHRC. Come prepared to share your experiences!

Servant Leadership

Servant leadership is a leadership approach that enriches the lives of individuals and builds better organizations. Servant Leaders share power, put the needs of others first, and help them develop and perform effectively. This session will introduce Servant Leadership in a way that is accessible and applicable to participants’ work as leaders of volunteers. Participants will learn the characteristics of Servant Leadership and be guided through interactive exercises to better understand and practice the characteristics.

Tana Turner

Understanding and Minimizing Biases in the Workplace

Research in various fields, such as neuroscience and psychology, have highlighted the impact that unconscious bias has on our behaviour and decisions. This extends to the workplace and is reflected in our day-to-day interactions with both clients and co-workers. This workshop will introduce participants to unconscious bias, its impact in the workplace, and how they can minimize the impact of bias in their workplaces.

Attendance at any of these workshops will count towards completion of the Professional

Development/Education component of the PAVRO Certification. Remember to have your

workshop facilitator sign your agenda or handout as proof of attendance.

A professional photographer will be available to take your headshot for a cost of $20, with a portion of the proceeds donated to PAVRO. This is a huge discount compared to what you would otherwise be charged by a photographer outside of the conference.

Why do you need a professional headshot?

Many people rely on poor-quality point-and-shoot (or worse, cell

phone) photos they asked their friends to take. If you want to be treated like a professional, you

must look like a professional. Within your organization or places you volunteer, it is a good idea

to have a professional photo ready for any publicity you are involved with and just to represent

your organization in a professional manner online. You need it for your LinkedIn page and other

social media profiles, your website or bio and any time you’re invited to speak or serve on a

panel somewhere.

How do I register to have a photo taken?

A photographer will be available at the conference on Thursday at designated times throughout

the day. Please email Cathy Annetta at [email protected] to book your

photo time.

Friday, May 27

Gather to vote on important items of business and elect the next PAVRO Board of Directors.

Thursday, May 26 & Friday, May 27

During the conference you will have an opportunity to bid on

silent auction items. All items will be set up in Meeting Room

#15 at the start of conference on Wednesday and then will

move to Meeting Room #16 to the end of the Gala on

Thursday evening. Winners will be announced at lunch on

Friday. Don’t miss out on some amazing items!

Support PAVRO at the LIVE Conference!

As a member-driven organization, PAVRO secures the majority of its operating funds from

annual membership fees and conference revenues. Other sources include revenue from the

Standardized Volunteer Opinion Survey, and donor Marilyn MacKenzie. Through fundraising

efforts at the LIVE Conference, we keep conference costs at a minimum for our members.

Funds also support initiatives throughout the year, such as free member webinars, appreciation

events, etc. At this year’s conference, we are offering Headshots taken by a professional

photographer (at an amazing price!) and our annual Silent Auction. More details are available in

the “Conference Highlights” section of this package. Thank you for your continued support of

PAVRO!
