We can write numbers in three forms:
We compare numbers using PLACE VALUE.
Many times there are more than 2 numbers that we want to compare. We can "ORDER" the numbers by placing them in an order from
least to greatest OR greatest to least

COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY:
ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY:
IDENTITY PROPERTY:
We can change the order and the sum stays the same.
EXAMPLE: 4 + 6 = 106 + 4 = 10
We can change the grouping and the sum stays the same.
EXAMPLE: 2 + (3+ 8) = 13 (2 + 3)+ 8= 13
We can add zero and the sum stays the same.
EXAMPLE: 7 +0 = 7

Addition and Subtraction are INVERSE OPERATIONS
If we subtract 0 from any number, the difference is that same number.
If we subtract a number from itself, the difference is 0.
13 - 0 = 13

There are several properties of multiplication.
1) COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY:We can change the order of the factors and the product stays the
same.EXAMPLE: 4 x 3 = 12

2) IDENTITY PROPERTY:We can multiply a number by 1 and the product is the
number. EXAMPLE: 3 x 1 = 3
3) ZERO PROPERTY:
We can multiply a number by 0 and the product is zero.

Uses of the properties of multiplication.
1) COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY:
The order of the factors does not affect the product.
4 groups of 3 cans = 12 cans
3 groups of 4 cans = 12 cans
The number of cans remain the same.

2) IDENTITY PROPERTY:
The product of 1 and a number is the number.
1 row of 5 cans = 5 cans.

The product of 0 and any number is 0.
