Serving 700 people with disabilities every day.
Today is your day.
As a long time member of the Center
Montessori School staff before joining The
Haven and Selby Preschool staff, I kept
the Center staff updated on happenings
at Selby and some of the children’s
“stories”. On one occasion, I shared
Michael’s story with them.
Michael, a 3-year-old little guy with big
brown eyes and a beguiling smile, present-
ed the Preschool staff with a dilemma each
day at nap time—he would not take off his
shoes! All of our coaxing and reminding
were to no avail, so the obvious question
was finally posed:
"Why don’t you want to
take your shoes off, Michael?”
His simple reply:
“ Some one might take them.”
We quickly recalled that Michael and
his family were staying at the homeless
Shelter in shelter in Sarasota—
thus, his reply.
After relating this story to the Center
staff, the Selby Preschool Shoe Party
project was begun! Each year, a list of the
Preschool children and their shoe sizes is
sent to the Center. Families of the Center
quickly choose "their child” and go shoe
shopping! The shoes are gift wrapped and
delivered to the our Preschool children by
the Center Kindergarten children as part of
this community
service project.
The children
eagerly open
their new shoes
and quickly en-
list an adult or
older child to
help them
change shoes so
they can show off their new
footwear. Dancing and a picnic lunch fol-
low their “shoe fashion show” and the
Preschool children then bid their new
Center Montessori friends farewell —
until next year!
The annual Selby Shoe Party
at The Haven, held during the Valentine
season each year, is a partnership
between the families of the Center
Montessori School in Bradenton and
The Haven’s Selby Preschool children.
It originated during the first years of
the Montessori program at The Haven,
when the Center staff learned of this
child’s story.

and that everyone has a purpose. I have seen individu-
als that were told they wouldn’t live past age 14, cele-
brate their 60th birthday; I have witnessed groups of
people that have never left the city of Sarasota, get on
a plane and travel across the country and take their
very first vacation; I have worked with people that were
afraid to speak in front of others because of their disa-
bility perform at the Asolo Theatre in front of a sold out
crowd; I have seen hundreds of people with disabilities
who were told they would never be able to get a job,
cash their first paycheck. So thank you Barry, thank you
Mackenzie and all of the Haven clients for your inspira-
tion and motivation. As we live in a time that seems to
inundate us with negativity and all that is wrong with

Most of all, I am thankful for the clients
we provide services for. They have taught
me that your circumstance does not
determine your ability; that being
disabled doesn’t mean you are unable . . .
the world, I in-
vite all of you to
come tour The
Haven’s beauti-
ful 32 acre campus. I can promise you three things. First,
that you will learn the true meaning of acceptance. Our
clients don’t care what clothes people wear, the car they
drive, the color of your skin or how much money you
make. They don’t judge a book by its cover; instead they
don’t even see the cover and only see the person for who
they are. They will greet you like you are their best friend.
Second you be inspired. You will be inspired to help to
ensure that people with disabilities are given every oppor-
tunity to lead productive and meaningful lives. And finally
you just leave happy. Happy that we live in an amazing
city and with support and encouragement, anything is
possible.

Frank Stern Employment Training Center Update
Frank Stern was one of those self-made millionaires
who never dressed the part or lived extravagantly. He
even avoided driving on toll bridges to save a dollar –
literally. “Frank was really into investing and making
sure his money did a lot of good when he was gone,” says
Michael Davis, a financial
advisor who met Stern
12 years ago and helped
him plan his charitable
giving. “Frank was ex-
tremely frugal, and he
wanted to make sure he
didn’t run out of money.”
Stern made his fortune
in real estate investment and development during the
first wave of seasonal residents to Fort Myers and Cape
Coral in the mid-1900s. Every dollar Stern saved (more
than $4 million during a 14-year span) was endowed to a
donor-advised fund at the Southwest Florida Community
Foundation upon his death at age 95 in February 2014.
Through Mr. Davis and Charles Marble, Mr. Stern’s long-
time friend and caregiver, both trustees of the Stern
fund, the naming gift was provided for Haven Industries’
new building: The Frank Stern Employment Training
Center.
The 7,500 square foot Frank Stern Employment Training
Center is being constructed in response to the demands
of a growing waiting list for The Haven’s Adult Day Train-
ing programs for adults with disabilities. The programs
are designed to develop confidence and a sense of inde-
pendence for each participant through practical experi-
ence in a variety of different vocations.
Haven Industries is unique in that all of the clients have
the opportunity to earn paychecks for their work. In Flor-
ida, 82.7% of people with disabilities aged 18—64 are
unemployed. This chronic unemployment makes them
twice as likely to live in poverty. At Haven Industries,
85% of the adults with disabilities are working or training
in jobs they enjoy and take pride in doing. Haven Indus-
tries currently has 71 contracts through 23 companies
for clients to learn work skills and earn a paycheck. With
the new training center to be finished in June, more will
be added soon.

A Man of Many Talents
Thank you so much for helping me find the
work I have today! My mother and I are finally
at peace with our new life! And I couldn’t have
done this without you. . .
I Couldn’t Have Done This without You . . .
You believed in my skills where many others had doubt.
You cared when others didn’t. . . and you were so certain
you could find me a job that I would enjoy working that
paid me enough to live, I thought you had lost your mind.
But in one meeting you seemed to understand me well
enough to lead me in the right direction.
Now go, use this story to inspire others, and see if you can’t
make this world a better place just helping one person at a
time.—
With my deepest regards, thank you.— Michael
The difference you’ve made in my life is undeniable,
and I owe everything I have to your efforts.
I have never felt better, safer, or more secure with my life.
You and the fine folks at The Haven have done an impressive
job helping me find one. I’m sure you hear this all the time, but
thank you. I can’t possibly thank you enough for all the work
that you’ve done.
Note: This letter has been edited for publication.
Louis and his mom, Pietrina, turned to The Haven’s Com-
munity Employment Services Program for help after their
relocation to Florida in 2008. Louis has talents that many of
us would love to have. He can remember people’s names,
even over a period of many months and even if he’s only met
them once. He’s very proficient with electronics, able to set
you up as an interactive contact in a smart split second. He
loves people, with an enthusiasm for life that’s gleefully con-
tagious.
Louis, age 30, has put his public relations skills to work at
Goodwill on Venice Island and is very happily employed. The
customers love his open, honest engagement with them.
Everyone is met with a smile and by name. Both Louis and his
Mom have openly expressed their satisfaction with
the support he receives from the Community Employment
Services Program and the positive attitude/commitment the
Haven's Job Coaches have been providing over the years. He
spends his spare time playing tennis, basketball, powerlifting,
bowling and swimming. Louis also enjoys walks on the beach,
going out to dinner & dancing with his love-
ly friend Mia. Life is good! Bravo, Louis –
thanks for keeping up the good work.

Mackenzie has lived at The Haven for a little over a year.
She began at The Haven six years ago when she became a
seasonal client in the Haven Industries Adult Day Training
Program. When her mom, Kelly, decided to relocate to Flor-
ida from Minnesota,
she learned that the
newest residence
home being built at
The Haven, Marlene’s
House had one open-
ing left. She immedi-
ately secured it for
Mackenzie – and they couldn’t be happier.
Each of the eight residents of
Marlene’s House got to decorate
their room and walk-in closet to
hia/gwe own taste. Mackenzie
loves color and her room is rain-
bow-bright. It must run in the
family. There’s a large, vibrant
mosaic on one wall of her room.
Family and friends each painted
a small
square canvas of that mosaic,
which was the assembled into a
lively, expressive piece of art.
The day begins early for Macken-
zie. She wakes up at 5:45 a.m. and breakfasts with her
house mates. Everyone’s at work by 7:45. Mackenzie
especially likes to work in the bakery, where cookies are her
favorite thing to bake
(and eat!). She
also likes landscaping,
as she loves being out-
doors.
Every evening, after
dinner she and her friends can be heard happily riding their
bikes around The Haven’s trails. They know their home’s
32 acres well. Mackenzie is happy and fully living her life
and mother, Kelly is content to see it. “When Mackenzie
first moved in here, she didn’t come home for seven weeks!
We understood. She’s just having such a good time here
with her friends.”
Mackenzie and her friends go
to
to movies, shopping, baseball
games and more together,
like a family. Her face lights
up as she relates the recent
birthday party of one of her
friends. They went out to a
restaurant. Great times!

Marlene Fry recently commissioned the artists at The Haven to paint a picture
for her home. Each of the artists participating took great pride in their work on
the project. In their presentation to her, they enthusiastically explained what
had inspired them to paint what they did in the colorful tableau.
