    Hansje and her MyTobii P10

First, I would like to give a shortintroduction about who I am. My nameis Hansje Janssen, I am forty years oldand since March of 2003 I have beensuffering from a bizarre progressive muscleillness. The symptoms started just tendays after I gave birth to my beautiful son.Since the beginning, my illness has beenhard to diagnose. It has also developedin ways that were not expected. Thismakes the future very uncertain, whichis very unpleasant. The doctor gave me,maximum, one year to live in April 2004.As of now, I am living through things which,by far, I didnt expect to live through.

Until the birth of my son I worked as aphysical therapist \ chiropractor with threeemployees and my own practice. Besidethat I had played eld hockey for 15 years atthe highest level. To that rich life, togetherwith its most beautiful moment (the birth ofmy son), came a brutal ending!

Since recently, though, there has been alittle light in the darkness. The MyTobii cameinto my life.

I was surng on the internet and Iaccidentally bumped into the MyTobii.Until that time I had used a head mouse forcommunication. But after starting to use theMyTobii, I started feeling as if I was liberated;a feeling I still have.

    A little lightin the darkness

Since 2003, Hansje Janssen has been living

with a rare degenerative muscular disease.

Since then, life has taken many unexpected

turns. This is her stry, tld in her wn wrds.

If you cant talk, you are captured withinyour own body. I once described it asfeeling this way: It feels continually as if

your head is a high pressure pot, lled withthoughts, opinions, emotions and feelings,at the point of exploding. Now with theMyTobii everything can come out!

With the head mouse I had only used themost necessary words. I forced myself tosay the most I could with as few words as

possible. Now I am able to type the wholeday, in a comfortable position, withoutgetting tired. In my own family the biggestchange is (actually, for the rst time) that Ican talk with my son!!! I cannot describewith words what that means to me.

When all my typing-time is not only spent

on the most necessary communication,I can participate almost normally in myfamily life. I can help with raising our son.It is not only my partner who has to be theboogey-man, because now we raise himtogether, sharing the good and the badthings.

We can have family conversations again, and I can have normal conversations withmy partner. We now realize that eighty

percent of our arguments were becauseof communication difculties. It is very

pleasant to be able talk extensively to oneand other about our days. We can noweasily discuss about how we are going todeal with the things that come our way, aswell as all the things that normal couplestalk about.

Beside all of that, and because I can

communicate faster than I have ever beenable to with a head mouse, I have the timeto take a large part in the organizationalwork involving my family. The organizationof the nurses who come every day to help, the nancial administration of the nursesand the others who help me and a large

part of the private administration; lists forgroceries, email contact with all kindsof institutions, the schooling of my son, internet banking and so on. In all of this Ican now support my partner, who is verybusy, as you can imagine.

Despite all of my activities that I describedabove, I am still able to intensify contactwith family and friends through email andchat. The text message function couldcontribute to this, but unfortunately itdoes not work just yet. I can work with theMyTobii in any relaxed position I choose, and I can actually look people in the eyesagain while talking to them.

    Tbii is Mumsbest friend!!

Even with reading glasses, which I reallyneed nowadays, the MyTobii functionsvery well. It is advisable, however, to buyglasses with lenses that curve as little as

    possible to minimize reection.

The latest improvement is a mounting

system for the MyTobii for my wheelchair. That is another big step, because thecontrast between being with, and beingwithout, the MyTobii had become very big. Now, for the rst time in four and a half

years, I think, I am able to talk while we arevisiting friends or family. I can participate inconversations and discussions. I can make

jokes again! That, by itself, is amazing;people laugh with me again!! It is no longeronly me laughing within my head about myown jokes. So, being free to get out and go

somewhere else, like I used to, gives memuch more joy then I had before.

The company that made the MyTobii hasnow developed a portable communicationsdevice. This would make it even better;to be able to go anywhere, to be able to usethe MyTobii, or the new device, anywhere, because it has a battery.

I hope that what I have written aboveinspires you to inform and advise othersabout how the MyTobii can help anyone inmy type of situation to have an enormousimprovement in their quality of life.

As my son says, Tobii is Mums bestfriend!!
