Silver Jubilee: Making a Difference
Riverside’s only castle was the setting for the July 20, 201 3 Awards and
Instal lation Luncheon. Benedict Castle is the home of Teen Challenge, a
non-profit that helps those with alcohol and drug addictions.
The luncheon was a time to reflect on the past Toastmasters year and
an opportunity to look ahead to the coming one. This year wil l be the
Silver Jubilee of District 1 2, our 25th anniversary. Our theme for the
year and our conferences is “Making a Difference.”
Toastmasters makes a difference. I t makes a difference to each of us as
individuals as we become better speakers, communicators and leaders.
I t makes a difference to our clubs as we work together as a team to
improve the member experience and help others to achieve their goals
of improving their speaking and communication skil ls. I t makes a
difference to our community. Our communities benefit when
Toastmasters, as a learning, teaching and educational organization
helps others to grow and meet the work-a-day challenges of our l ives.

Advanced Manuals
We’re featuring a different manual each month, to let members know
about the various Advanced Manuals that are available to them after
they complete their Competent Communication Manual. In the July
issue of Images, we talked about The Technical Presentation Manual.
This month we feature: Specialty Speeches.
Speakers are often called upon to give different kinds of talks. This
manual contains information about giving the most common ones; it

Did you feel the energy in the room? The enthusiasm of the Division
and Area Governors to bring the message of Toastmasters to a larger
audience was exciting. Did you sense the commitment of our Past
District Governors and Past International Directors as they instal led
the incoming District officers? What a wonderful team we have to help
us all Make a Difference this year.
Thank you to Richard Snyder, PID who put many hours of work into
making the event such a success and to Founder’s PDG Club 407
members who went out of their way to help us make the luncheon a
success.
The District 1 2 Top 3 (Kent Peterson , DTM, Lt. Governor of Education

covers impromptu talks, preparing inspirational speeches, sel l ing a
product, reading out loud and introducing a speaker.
Introducing a speaker is something we do all the time as Toastmasters.
A good introduction should: guide thinking, add power and set the mood.
Guide thinking - This sets the tone for the topic at hand, so the group
wil l know what to look for.
Add power - This contributes to the speaker’s authority by establishing
that he or she speaks from preparation, knowledge or experience.
Set the mood - For example: I f a serious subject was presented by the
previous speaker, the introduction can prepare the audience for a more
light-hearted speech to fol low.
Evaluations
How strong are your Evaluations? Do you give the same type of
evaluation for those giving speeches in their Competent Communicator
Manual as those giving Advanced Manual speeches?
Speakers/members have different skil l levels and you should be aware
of these. I f you have a new member that is just joining a club, and he or
she hears an advanced evaluation of a seasoned member, make sure it
is stated up front that the evaluation is being given at an advanced level
so you don’t scare away members. Address the objectives of the
speech and let the speaker know if he or she met the objectives. Be
honest without being brutal. Don’t repeat what the speaker said. Rather,
let the speaker know what was and wasn’t effective about the speech.
Keep in mind, the purpose of evaluations is to help speakers grow. In
order for them to grow, they require constructive and honest evaluations.
Here's where you can hear advanced evaluations in District 1 2.

6:59 pm, at 1 1 201 Benton Street, Loma Linda CA 92357. For further
information, contact Charles Z. Radney at 877-723-6391 or email at
Also, Circle ofChampions is an Advanced Evaluation Club in District

whose primary focus is helping its individual members master
professional level ski l ls. For further information contact Randy Powell

Would you like your Club to be a Distinguished Club? The Club
Coach Program can help. The Club Coach Program helps challenged
clubs become Distinguished clubs.
Which Clubs need a Coach? Any club with 1 2 or fewer individuals
who have paid for membership at the time of the appointment
qualifies to have a Coach.
A Club Coach is appointed by the district governor or l ieutenant
governor marketing, with the approval of the Club members, to assist
a club that is experiencing difficulties building and maintaining
membership. The Coach’s goal is to help the club become a
Distinguished Club. Up to two Coaches may be appointed to each
club. The appointment lasts to June 30 of the current club year if the
club becomes a Distinguished Club or better by that date, or to June
30 of the fol lowing year if Distinguished Club recognition or better is
not reached in the current club year.
Who can be a Club Coach? The Club Coach is a Toastmaster who is
not a member of the club and not (yet) famil iar with the club or its
members. This perspective allows the coach to objectively view the
club. The coach is a counselor, a source of knowledge and a fountain
of ideas.
The coach may not be a member of the club at the time of
appointment, but may join the club after being assigned.
Benefits of Being a Club Coach: A coach receives a pin upon
assignment and a certificate upon successful completion of the
assignment. A successful coach also receives credit toward the
Advanced Leader Silver award.
Were there individuals on your l ist who were recommended to be Area
Governors who didn’t become one? Do you need credit towards an
Advanced Leader Silver to earn your DTM? This is your opportunity to
grow and inspire a Club by becoming a Club Coach. Let’s al l ral ly
around to find and inspire our membership to take the next step in
leadership. LET’S FIND A CLUB COACH TODAY!

MyToastmasters Experience by Lloyd Mize
Public speaking has always been a big attraction to me. As a small boy I was attracted to great
speakers and leaders. Presidents JFK and Ronald Regan, astronauts l ike Jon Glenn and other public
speakers and leaders such as Dr. Bil ly Graham, Earl Nightingale and Dr. Martin Luther King.
As a young man I mastered my fear of speaking in front of people. However, in my 20s and 30s I
discovered a difference between speaking and effective communication. I also discovered to be a
great leader, which I aspire to be, requires great communication skil ls.
Twin Cities Business Leaders Toastmasters has provided me with the type of education, network and
curriculum to develop my communication and leadership skil ls. By network I mean being in a network
of l ike-minded people who desired to improve and elevate their communication and leadership skil ls.
As a result of being a Toastmaster member since 201 1 , I have crafted and delivered over 1 5
speeches, completed the Competent Communication manual and published my first book, Reviving
The American Dream in Southern California, How to Purchase a Home and Pay it Off in 5 Years.
My communication skil ls continue to develop and improve within my personal, business and social l ife.
This has made significant and positive changes in al l my relationships. I seek to speak professionally
as much as possible and to influence others to have the quality of l ife we are all designed and gifted to
have.
