RE: Agricultural Education Curricular Changes
This document is to request final TEC approval for the redesigned Agricultural Education
curriculum. When approved, the proposed changes will take effect with entering freshmen fall
2019. Current students will remain under the current curriculum; however, they will take the
new/revised courses as introduced. Substitution requests will be submitted as appropriate and
needed.
Page 2 outlines the rationale and process followed by an overview of changes.
The table on Page 3 outlines the proposed field experiences.
The table on Page 4 shows the cross-walk of courses and pedagogical content and pedagogical
standards addressed in the courses.
Pages 5-7 is the Agricultural Education major plan of study with changes highlighted in yellow.
Pages 8-9 are the College of Agriculture cover page voted on at its faculty meeting March 21,
2019.

Rationale:
The Purdue Agricultural Education undergraduate major leads to a BS in Agriculture degree and
qualification for an initial practitioner Indiana teacher license in CTE: Agriculture Grades 5-12.
In 2018, the Agricultural Education teacher education program received Indiana state-level Non-
SPA accreditation without conditions. This recognition provides an opportunity to make needed
programmatic changes.
Process:
Student, faculty, and stakeholder input helped guide the process. Sources of input included:
Annual exit surveys collected and summarized by Purdue Teacher Education. These
include: Teacher Candidates Exit Survey; Cooperating Teacher Survey; scores and pass
rates for required assessments; content grades means, ranges, frequencies; Taskstream
reports; Dispositions report.
“If I Knew Then What I Know Now” stakeholder input session held at Indiana
Agriculture Teachers Summer Workshop in June 2016.
“Winter Workshop Feedback Session” held at Indiana Agriculture Teachers Winter
Workshop in January 2017.
Ad Hoc YDAE Committee for Agricultural Education Curriculum Review, which met in
2017 and 2018.
Agricultural Education Program Area faculty/staff reviewed all input, developed
proposals, and met with individuals in content departments.
The ASEC faculty approved the following changes.
Agriculture Courses: Required and Selectives
o Change from ANSC 10200 required to ANSC 10200 or ANSC 10600 required
o Replace HORT 20100 required with HORT/ASEC 21200 required
o Change from FS 16100 required to FS 16100 or NUTR 20500 required
o Change from 12 credits Agriculture Selectives required to 9 credits Agriculture
Selectives required
Agricultural Education Courses
o Delete YDAE 44100 (1 credit). Field experience folded into remaining courses.
o Change ASEC 31800 from 3 credits to 2 credits. Concentrates on SAE, FFA, and
agricultural experience/SAE management and tracking. Duplication of content
taught in other required courses removed.
o Change ASEC 31900 from 3 credits to 2 credits. Concentrates on School-Based
Agricultural Education program planning and management. Duplication of
content taught in other required courses removed.
o Add ASEC 34000 Laboratory Practices in Agricultural Education (2 credits)
o Add ASEC 34100 Curriculum Development in Agricultural Education (2 credits)
o Add ASEC 44200 Curriculum Implementation in Agricultural Education (2
credits).
YDAE/ASEC 24000 Seminar in Agricultural Education
o Change from 1 credit Elective to 1 credit ASEC 24000 required.

Department of Agricultural Sciences Education and Communication
Proposed Course and Curricular Changes (College of Agriculture Undergraduate/Graduate)
A. COURSES TO BE DELETED
YDAE 44100 Field Experience in Agricultural Education Programs (1
credit)
Justification/Rationale: The Agricultural Education program is being revised with
early field experiences included in all required courses. This makes YDAE 44100
redundant, therefore no longer needed.
B. COURSES TO BE ADDED
Prefix and Course Number: ASEC 34000
Title: Laboratory Practices in Agricultural Education
Course Description for University Catalog (include requisites/restrictions):
Credit hours: 2.00. This course is designed to introduce pre-service agricultural education
teachers to laboratory integration into the agricultural education curriculum at the middle
school and secondary school level. Emphasis is placed on laboratory safety, skill
acquisition, developing knowledge of laboratory components in agriscience, laboratory
utilization, facilitating student learning in the laboratory setting, appropriate teaching
methods and techniques, curriculum applications, and classroom resources. Travel to on
and off-campus sites will be required. Fall.
Prefix and Course Number: ASEC 34100
Title: Curriculum Development in Agricultural Education
Course Description for University Catalog (include requisites/restrictions):
Credit hours: 2.00. This course is designed to expose students to appropriate teaching
techniques, curricula and resources within agricultural education. Procedures for
designing, implementing, and evaluating curriculum will be examined. Emphasis will be
placed on new and emerging areas in agriculture, food, and natural resources. Spring.
Prefix and Course Number: ASEC 44200
Title: Curriculum Implementation in Agricultural Education
Course Description for University Catalog (include requisites/restrictions):
Credit hours 2.00. Students develop skills necessary to implement standards-based
curriculum in Agricultural Education through hands-on application. Course is designed
for students who have an understanding of curriculum development and teaching
methodology. Pre- or co-requisites: ASEC 34100 and ASEC 44000. Spring.
9
C. COURSES TO BE CHANGED
Change ASEC 31800 Coordination of Supervised Agricultural Education Programs from
3 credits (3 hours lecture) to 2 credits (2 hours lecture).
Justification/Rationale: A curriculum review showed redundancies with
ASEC 31900. Redundant content was deleted from ASEC 31800.
Change ASEC 31900 Planning Agricultural Science and Business Programs from 3
credits (3 hours lecture) to 2 credits (2 hours lecture).
Justification/Rationale: A curriculum review showed gaps in the curriculum
that required new courses. Content that related to proposed new courses was
moved from ASEC 31900 to the new courses.
D. CURRICULAR CHANGES
Justification/Rationale: From 2016 to 2018 a comprehensive curriculum
review was conducted including student and stakeholder input. The review showed
gaps in agricultural content areas and pedagogical standards in Agricultural
Education.
Credit hours deleted (12) equals credit hours added (12).
See changes on page 1. See new Plan of Study on pages 3-4.
