Free & Reduced Meal Program FAQ’s Free and Reduced Program Applications: Applications are available online at http://durham.schoolwires.net/Page/232 Applications are also available at the schools or School Nutrition Services, 808 Bacon Street, Durham, NC 27703. I completed an application last year and was approved for benefits. Do I have to fill out another application? YES. The federal government requires a new application to be completed at the start of each new school year. Do I need to fill out a Free and Reduced Lunch application for each child in my household? NO. Complete one application for all students and other family members living in your household. Is my foster child included on the same Free and Reduced Lunch application with the rest of my children? YES. Foster children should be included on the same application with the rest of your children and family members living in your household. If I don’t qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch now, may I apply later? YES. You may apply at any time during the school year if your household size goes up, income goes down, or if you start getting Food Stamps, TANF or other benefits. Who should I include as members of my household on the Free and Reduced Lunch application? Dietary FAQ’s

What do I do if my child has diet restrictions? Please have the child’s doctor write the specific diet order that is to be followed. Provide the information to the school nurse and School Nutrition Manager (SNM) at the school. The SNM will work with our Registered Dietitian to make any menu modifications or special orders that may be required. The parents will be contacted if further information is needed.

Why is my child asked to take extra items if he/she doesn’t plan to eat them? Students must choose three of four items offered at breakfast and three of five items offered at lunch for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to consider it a complete meal. The USDA requires a complete meal be taken in order for School Nutrition Services to receive reimbursement. It is also important for children to take a full meal in order to meet recommended nutrient needs.

How to Help Your Child Transition to Kindergarten

Research tells us that children who transition smoothly into kindergarten and attend school on the first day are more likely to have long term academic success. Here’s how to set your child up for an excellent start to their school experience.

1) Early Enrollment: To help your child make a smooth transition to school, gather all of his paperwork and immunization information needed to enroll him/her in kindergarten. Make sure your child attends the FIRST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN!

2) Participate in Transition Activities: Try to find and participate in transition activities at the school that will make your child feel more comfortable with their new school environment. Transition to Kindergarten activities can be found at Durhamgoestokindergarten.com, or ask your child’s new school.

3) Advocate: You know your child best. Talking to the school about your child’s strengths and needs is a great way

to help him or her succeed in school.

4) Educate: Read, talk, play, and encourage your child. When your child goes to school, your role in your child’s education continues as you partner with his teacher.

5) Plan: Make sure your child gets enough sleep, is up and ready on time to get to school every day, has a good

breakfast (at home or at school), and completes any assigned homework.

6) Communicate: To support your child through the year, try to maintain frequent contact with your child’s teacher. Check your child’s folder/backpack daily for communication from your child’s classroom.

Supporting During the School Year:

1) Try linking learning to the activities you do at home. Ask your child, “What did you learn today?” Try to incorporate that learning into your daily routine. For example, you might ask your child to look for letters, colors, shapes, and numbers and tell you when they have found them. Make up stories together! Ask your child to draw pictures and “play school” in order to practice good classroom behavior.

2) Practice good time management with your child. Early in the evening, talk to your child about all the things that need to be done to prepare for the next day. This planning can give your child a sense of security and support a smooth morning routine, making it easier to get to school on time and feel prepared in the morning. It might be helpful to practice this routine well before the first day. If you make a checklist with your child, the two of you can help each other get ready for the next day:

o Do homework o Put things in your child’s backpack o Get clothes ready for the next day o Bathe or shower o Read together before bed o Brush teeth

3) Visit the school. Being visible in the school sends a strong message about the importance of your child’s

education. Seeing you at school can help your child know that you value education enough to make it a priority.
