“The YMCA Where Value Meets Values”
2
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE
Dear Members & Friends,
On behalf of the Garden City Family YMCA, welcome to our Annual Recognition & Celebration banquet. This banquet gives us the opportunity to thank all of our supporters, friends, volunteers and staff who do an AMAZING job for the YMCA. I want to commend everyone for a job well done. Once again, we keep raising the bar! I know I have been saying that for the last few years, but we keep elevating our services each and every year! All of this was accomplished with no federal, state or local tax dollars. I truly believe we are a tax benefit for the community!
We made a promise to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Fulfilling this promise begins with staff and volunteer leaders of all levels understanding the promise and their role fulfilling it. The work of Living our Cause serves as a reminder and celebration of how we all live our cause. This was evident this year as the YMCA of USA hit us with several initiatives to help drive our market and tell our story. That is one thing our YMCA must get better at, is telling our story. Currently, we try to accomplish this by producing our Monumental Moment book and stressing to our Campaigners to share our YMCA story for our Annual Campaign. “The YMCA…So Much More” is the national slogan to help the community be more aware of what the YMCA really does. I can attest this is so true in many ways. We are much more than your gym and swim place, a fitness center, or a place to work out. A couple of strategies to mirror that slogan were the A to Z and the “My Y in six words” nugget. The A to Z consisted of different programs and activities we do from A to Z. The nugget was filled out by staff and displayed throughout the YMCA. My nugget was “Inspire others to make a difference”. That’s our focus, we want to make a difference!
One of the highlights this year was the amount of scholarships we awarded. This past year, $185,535.41 was given in financial assistance to 5,822 members and 7,029 program participants. Each year this has increased in dollars awarded. I attribute this to the work of our volunteers spreading our YMCA story. Being a volunteer-founded and volunteer-led organization, we rely greatly on these special people each year in many capacities. From serving on our Board of Directors to helping for a special event to coaching a youth team to helping on one of the committees, our volunteers play an integral part for our YMCA. Right beside the volunteer is a staff person leading the way. We had a blend of experienced staff helping the new staff create a memorable year. The current Y staff did a fabulous job during this transition.
I believe we are truly blessed with outstanding staff that are committed and dedicated to providing the best programs and services for our community. The volunteers continue to step up and provide the necessary leadership and guidance to help pursue our mission. Garden City is fortunate to have a Y serve as the catalyst in many collaborations and programs. I salute and thank everyone for their continued support and commitment for healthy living, youth development and social responsibility.
Sincerely

I consider
Youth
Develop-
ment to
be many
different
talents,
teachings,
leadership
skills,
mentoring
and above
all someone who takes the time to be a lasting
figure in a child’s life no matter what. Amanda
Mitchell is all of these traits and so much more!
She has worked for several years in our
Childwatch room, caring and nurturing kids
between the ages of six weeks old up to eight
years of age. She is always willing to help
another staff person or myself out of a jam and
never asks for anything in return. She is very
connected to the children and parents who visit
her each day and the LOVE that she shares with
them is a blessing. She reads, plays, dances,
does crafts, colors and will ALWAYS take the
very best care of your child. She is very in
control of the children and everything going on
around here. She lives by and instills our core
values into all the children and exemplifies our
mission. We are so fortunate to have such an
AMAZING young women setting such wonderful
examples for our children. I am so very
THANKFUL for everything she does for our
children, parents and our YMCA.
Congratulations Amanda!!!

The Spirit Mind and Body award goes to someone
who has demonstrated everything the YMCA looks
for in a volunteer coach. In two instances I was
left without a coach in my girls and in my boy’s
basketball leagues. Both times Norman volun-
teered his time and took both teams under his
wing. I saw major transformations in the kids
during each season. They learn to never give up
always play until they hear the final whistle and
most important have fun. I know Norman cares
about these kids and their futures and it is not all
about winning. I witnessed him playing a game at
the end of one of his practices and so not only is
he teaching these kids but he letting them have
fun. It was always the best when you scrimmaged
and you beat the team that had coach on it.
Norman deserves this award for the time he has
put into the development of our youth in the
community. I am lucky to have met him and hope
to work with him more in the future as well!

The Healthy Living Champion was started in 2010 after the YMCA of USA changed our focus areas to
Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. I can attest that this year I nominated Jay Edwards because he embodies Healthy Living. A couple of years ago, Jay began his quest to workout religiously to combat his weight gain. I visited with Jay one day and he told me he had a reunion with his college track team and wanted to get back to the weight he was in college. He said that was around 65 pounds. Low and behold, he did it! He not only managed to lose 65 pounds, but he has maintained the weight since he lost it. That is a challenge in itself!
Every year we also recognize the Healthy Heart winners. These are members who came to the YMCA and checked in over 200 times. Well, this past year Jay cracked that list with 284 visits. This was good for sixth place. This past year our list grew to 51 people who exceeded that mark. This was our highest year so far. In 2012, they had 39 people. This is pretty amazing! When I finally told Jay he won the award, I took him to the hall where all the plaques are on the wall. I told him about the Healthy Living Champion award and he thought I was asking him for some names to nominate. I told him, ‘no’, our winner is Jay Edwards and his name would be on the plaque. He was pretty humble and couldn’t believe he deserved the award, but he was ecstatic. He said there are many other people who deserve the award. I told him I agreed, but for 2014 he was going to be our Healthy Living Champion! I then proceeded to tell him that he must attend the Annual Meeting to receive his plaque. He told me he would be there!
Healthy Living is one of our Focus Areas and Jay Edwards exemplifies that for the Garden City Family YMCA. We have many outstanding users of our Y, but Jay trumps them all for 2014! Please join us in recognizing Jay Edwards as our 2014 Healthy Living Champion!

The John Wooden Youth Sports Character award goes to Alazai Ibarra. She may pick on me and make fun of me from time to time when she is at work with her mom, but this kid has Heart of gold. In my youth soccer program this past fall I witnessed her on numerous accounts help people up, give them a five, and tell them they did a great job. She told me she doesn’t want to shoot because she wants other kids to have a chance to take the shots. She is a real team player and wants to win but even at her age it seems that she knows there is more to value right now than just winning. She is a ferocious competer. I have seen her battle for the ball with another young athlete and when he fell she was the first one to pick him up and say good job. There are a ton of qualities about her and to sum it up she is the type of kid that every team in every program needs to have on their team. A true team player who is very coachable on top of wanting to help develop other kids skills!

Windriver Grain has been chosen to receive the “Partner in Health” award for 2014 due to their outstanding commitment to the Garden City Family YMCA and to their employees. Windriver started their corporate membership December of 2013. They have always been willing to continue to support the Y and their employees by offering the benefit of payroll deduction for each and every one of their employees. It has always been a joy to work with them as partners in health and the relationships that have evolved due to this partnership have been
wonderful. I’m always so thankful to work with people and organizations such a Windriver Grain because of their devotion to their employees as well as the community around them. Thank you Windriver Grain for your support and I hope to have many more years to share in our partnership.

Tuan Le was chosen the Member
Champion for the year 2014. He
has been a member almost three years now, May of 2012. Since then,
Tuan has demonstrated hard work, dedication and commitment to our
organization not to mention his own health and well-being. Tuan is usually
on our Biggest User List! Tuan walks in daily with a smile on his face and
greets everyone. We all look forward to seeing him. Tuan has also been a
major advocate and supporter of the YMCA. He has demonstrated this in
all of the wonderful things that he has done for our organization. Thank
you Tuan for inspiring us all and congratulations for winning Member
Champion of 2014! We are so happy that you are a part of our YMCA
family! We look forward to many years with you.

The YMCA is all about change... transaction to transformation. Patrick Twiss literally defies change. When Patrick comes in to the
Y, he is all smiles! He smiles and talks to members, staff, and anyone else who greets him. Patrick is a hard working machine! There could be 2ft of snow on the ground and he still manages
come in to the Y and get his work out on. Any type of workout he is doing, he is pushing 110%! One day, Patrick came in to the pool
and I was honestly shocked and excited that he was going to swim! I asked him if he needed to use the chair lift and he flat out
told me no. I said okay, stepped back, and let him do his thing. Patrick got into the lap pool using the stairs and with the help of
his friend and about 7 noodles, he was swimming the length of the lap pool. He did not swim the length just once or twice; he swam multiple times, just like any other lap swimmer! This is what the YMCA is
all about! Patrick, thank you for proving me wrong and always doing your best no matter what!

Boyd
has
been a long time member of the YMCA. He is
currently and has been part of the fitness
committee for a long time. He has also been an
ASC campaigner in the past. He has also been
giving to the ASC for several years now. He has
also donated a few things to the YMCA as well.
He has also been known to help us out with our
grounds here. There are times when he will pick
up some trash off the ground because it is
there and he is walking by. There are also
times throughout the year that he comes and
sprays the weeds that start to grow. He will
usually do these things on his own time and we
appreciate
that from
him. The
oversized
tires that we
have out back
for tire flips
were given to
us from Boyd.
During the
week he is
here most
days and is
one of our big
users. He is
usually one of
our recipients for the Healthy Heart award.
Overall he has just been a great member for us
and he is an example of what we are trying to
accomplish at the YMCA. There are three areas
that are Youth Development, Healthy Living,
and Social Responsibility.

Our Employee of
the Year for 2104
was Stephanie
Davidson.
Stephanie and her
family are a major
part of our “Y
family.” Stephanie
is a longtime
volunteer who
started working at
the Welcome
Center since
August of 2013. It
can be a challenge
at the Welcome
Center because there are a ton of things to learn
and keep track of with the multiple program areas
but because Stephanie had been a part of our Y
for so long she was able to easily transition from
program participant to member to volunteer to
employee over the years! Stephanie also referees
in the sports programs for volleyball and soccer.
She is a great asset because she has been both a
participant in the programs, as have her kids, so
she can see both sides of things and handles any
situations that come up. She does all this in
addition to her “real” job as an assistant manager
at Walmart!! We are so lucky to have Stephanie as
a part of our staff and we can’t thank her enough
for her dedication to the Y!

I nominated Susan Dempsey for the Humanitarian Award due to
her dedication to the YMCA. Whether Susan is at the YMCA working out at 4:30 in the morning or helping with our KOP's and ASC, she is dedicated. When I first met Susan, I knew she was going to make the Y even a better place with just with her present. Su-
san served as a board member and with that, she also served on Krystal Richardson's and I's team for ASC. She kept her board duties rolling by help-ing us with our KOP's; Susan, thank you for not letting me be the only one to
ball my eyes out while watching my sister receive her KOP. Thank you for serving on our board and I hope you stay serving and helping the YMCA as long as possible.

“It’s a Tull thing, you wouldn’t understand”
I can attest the Garden City Family YMCA know the Tull’s and we understand their VALUE to our organization! That is why they are the Family Champion of the Year for the Garden City Family YMCA! This phrase was on the shirt of Matt Tull as I checked him in one morning. He said his Dad made them up for their reunion. I thought it was pretty cool! Later that day or the next day, Julie checked in with her children, Peyton and Emma. I took all of them to the hall of champions with all the plaques. When we arrived at the Family Champion plaque, I told them that they will be on there for 2014 because they were our Family Champions this year. They were all excited and couldn’t believe they were chosen and won. Emma said we won and I said ‘yes, your name will be on the plaque forever as our
Family Champion’. She was pretty excited. This is one of the greatest benefits we have in running our YMCA. Now, the real reason why they are the Family Champion! For starters, they work out together sometimes and if not together they will all be in the building doing something. One time last winter, I came in to swim and I think it was a Saturday morning. All of the lanes were filled and I couldn’t be-lieve it. Then, as I jumped in and scanned the pool, two lanes had two people in each. Guess what? It was the Tull family. Emma and Matt were in one lane and Peyton and Julie were in the other or something like that. They were all swimming and helping each other out. Isn’t that AWESOME? Swimming is a major activity in their family. They are all involved in swim team and help out in every way they can. Last year, we wanted to get a Swim Team Record Board. Our Aquatics Director at the time presented the concept to her Parent Advisory Committee and her Aquatics Committee. They decided they would go raise the necessary funds. The next day, the Aquatics Director gets a call from Matt and he says he has found a donor to cover the costs. Again, isn’t that AWESOME? Well, I have to tell you the idea stemmed from Peyton as she was looking at her times and said she wanted to get the pool record. I visited with Julie the next day or that day, I can’t remember and told her. Julie said that has been her goal from day one. That is when I proposed the idea and concept to the Aquatics Director. So, it is pretty ironic how this all involved the Tull’s. Peyton is on the Board with a record. Again, isn’t that AWESOME? Julie has also volunteers several times to conduct our Lunch and Learn sessions and various other nutritional tips for our members through many programs. It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to our 2014 Family Champions – the Tull’s! Thank you Matt, Julie, Peyton and Emma and we will see you at the YMCA!

It MUST be in the blood as she is my niece, but Jessica Holloway exemplifies what this award stands for….our core values!
Jessie is a blessing to our childcare program and all those she comes in contact with! She has essentially grown up in the Y and in childcare and is ALWAYS willing to open up and befriend anyone. She cares about the well-being of others in the program as well as counselors. She will make new children or staff feel welcomed in the program. Jessie is very respectful of others around and the staff that cares for her from day-to-day. She is never asked to do something she knows she needs to do. She is very wise and quick on her feet, and she will not back down on a debate she knows she can win! She took the initiative last school semester to put together a little library for the kids within our childcare room. She had a check-in and out system, chairs lined up, books in order on the shelves and even an
open/closed sign. ALL the kiddos LOVED it and would wait patiently for their opportunity to read. It was and AMAZING site to see and something to be proud of!!!
As you can see, Jessie is quite an AMAZING young girl that we are so blessed to have in our childcare program. She goes above and beyond in everything she does and it is so rewarding to see her interactions with her peers every day. I am truly honored to be a part of her life as an auntie and a mentor! I will continue to encourage, protect, educate and support her daily. Thanks Jess for allowing me to be a part of your life and Congratulations!

I nomi-
nated
Gilbert Valerio as our Volunteer Champion for 2014 because I think
he has been an amazing asset to our YMCA. Gilbert has been a
member since 2008, and was asked to serve on our board in 2013.
Since he joined the board he has been an awesome board member
and chair of the fitness committee. He always is in communication
and follows up on what’s going on in the fitness department. He is
willing to help or recruit help for special events. He was on my team
for our Annual Support Campaign and he is always the first one to
email back and the first one to check in on the team and see how we
are doing! I believe he was even the first one to pick up his packets and get them turned back in! He
is truly an advocate for the YMCA and goes above and beyond what we ask him to do and for that and
so many other things he has done we are so happy to have him as a Y Supporter!

When a person gives back it is a magical
moment for everyone involved! I truly believe Terry Darden loves this moment. He finds joy in making kids smile and making a difference for our YMCA! Terry has been a valuable member, donor and volunteer for many years. His time on the Board of Directors and the Building & Grounds Committee has been outstanding. I think Terry is the first Board member that I have had in 15 years to never miss a Board meeting or a Committee meeting. That’s AWESOME!!!!! As far as his philanthropic work, Terry takes the lead role as the General Manager each year for our Annual Support Campaign and leads by example. He is always willing to donate and help the YMCA with many different activities. Let me tell you about two that I think really hits home for Terry.
The first one is our racquetball tournaments. Terry really wants to make an impression on the players coming in. He works hard to help recruit local players and he helps make sure the courts are in the best shape and ready to go. During the tournaments, Terry is known as our “chef” for the weekend. He will plan the meals all weekend and work closely with our staff to ensure we are providing the best meals possible. During the Saturday night tournament dinner one of the pros said that he started coming to Garden City years ago as a 140 pound shrimp and now his is a full grown man thanks to Terry’s cooking. Terry cooks on his grill all day Saturday & Sunday. From hamburgers and hot dogs to rib tips and even steaks, Terry makes sure we have the food and hospitality we need for our tournaments. He also goes out and gets all the door prizes, secures free motel rooms for the players and keeps my wife busy all weekend running around and getting stuff ready.
The second one deals with the Child Care department. Terry has become known as YMCA Daddy, YMCA Papa and YMCA Grandpa to the child care kiddos. He shows up on different days and times with goodies for the children. He likes to bring popsicles when it is 100 degrees out. He often stops by and brings them all an afternoon snack. Terry has brought them many different snacks from time to time. I think he gets a big kick out of the kids yelling and screaming at him because they are excited for their special snack from Terry. He is always telling me stories about seeing the children out in public at Walmart or some special event. Terry enjoys when they come running up to him and give him a big hug. Again, isn’t that magical!
I am sure the reason for my nomination of Terry Darden as our Social Responsibility Champion this year is obvious. This is only a snippet of what Terry does for our YMCA. He is constantly our watch dog to make sure everything is operating like it should be. He is always willing to give back and help with whatever the YMCA needs. He never wavers on his commitment and dedication to the YMCA. THANKS Terry!

Jeannie Kleysteuber was a joint nomination between two of us for work on both the Facility Task Force and Fitness Committee.
She truly deserves this award it for her constant support and passion for the YMCA! She has been a longtime member of the Fitness Committee and has always been an enthusiastic supporter of programs in the fitness area from not only our racquetball tournament but to the classes and equipment we offer (she likes the treadmills and if you are lucky she will sing and dance for you)! This year I also served on the Facility Task Force. On that committee I truly learned how much Jeanne cares about our YMCA. She has our best interest in mind and helped commit our YMCA to our vision of the future. –Jackie Regan
I have only met Jeannie once at my first fitness committee but I could tell right away that she was someone that cared about how and what we were doing to help the community. Jeannie also shares our vision for the future of the YMCA with us at the YMCA. I look forward to working more with her in the future. -Steven Lynch
Committee Champion Jeannie Kleysteuber
Justin Sanchez started his term first term on our Board of Directors in 2011. Justin served on the Building and Grounds Committee his first year and then was asked to become an officer on the Finance/Executive Committee. I begged Justin to stay on and serve as our Board President. Justin started his second term as our Board President. At first, I told him to step up and lead us this next year and then we will discuss his second term, He agreed after some arm twisting! Justin played a key role in many capacities for us. Since he was close to the Building & Grounds Committee and knew all the hot issues from that committee, he knew what the YMCA needed. He focused on making sure our operations and maintenance was better for our YMCA. Since he serves as President of Tatro Plumbing, he knew about some of the struggles with our Family Pool construction. This was important to have
Justin going to bat for us on this issue. Justin also put his stamp on the finances and executive committee. He made sure we stayed on task and rally crunched the numbers to find out what was happening in each area. He would review the financials each and every month and would always ponder the question “is this something we need to be worried about”. He was always looking out for some red flags in our budget and really stressed the importance of staff keeping tabs on their budget. He wanted them to be accountable and make sure they were following and managing their budget. Our financial statements were a bit dicey to say the least with the second branch. Justin was always there to answer the questions regarding the Dodge City Branch and the numbers in regards to our overall operation. This was evident as Justin reached out to the Corporate Board President many times regarding that operation. During his tenure, he has witnessed many changes within our YMCA and more importantly, behind the scenes with all of our HVAC and pool equipment. I know under his leadership, we made many changes for the betterment of our YMCA operations. His dedication to ensure the pool equipment was up to par and running appropriately has made a huge difference. Justin did a wonderful job leading our Board of Directors and helping me with our facility management. I believe this will pay big dividends for us in the long run. THANKS Justin! Terry Major
Terry Major became the first appointee from the Ministerial Alliance that we arranged seven years
ago. Terry was a GREAT Board member who really elevated the “C” in our YMCA. Terry was very active
in our committee work. He was very active early on the Board for the Membership Committee. Then, he
played a major role in forming our Christian Emphasis Committee. This committee brought some great
ideas and a special event each year that we conduct – Prayer Breakfast. He was very active in the
Prayer Breakfast and even recruited the keynote speaker this past year. He serves as the Master of
Ceremonies for this event. At our special events, I always lean on Terry to give the invocation. He
served two terms on our Board of Directors. THANKS Terry!
Steve Karlin
Steve Karlin is another one this year that is truly going to be missed. Steve served two terms on our
Board of Directors as well. Just like Terry, Steve played a crucial role in his committee work on our
Board of Directors. Steve helped launch the YMCA reversible jersey program we started. This was
heavily discussed several times during the Sports Committee before being approved by the Board of
Directors. His last couple of years, Steve served on the Finance/Executive Committee. He was one that
I could count on to make sure we were doing the right things with our YMCA. Steve would always be
thinking and processing the situations to ensure we made the right decision. THANKS Steve!
Chad Deniston
Chad Deniston was a very valuable Board member. Chad really took the Annual Support Campaign
under his wing and was the leader for our Board in leading by example. His last three years on the
Board, he was selected as the #1 draft pick from the staff. Now, keep in mind, the first year the staff
really had no clue that should be the #1 pick. Two staff members gambled on Chad and it paid off!
Chad also played a key role in his committee work. He was very dedicated and committed to the Family
department and Krystal loved working with Chad because he was always checking in with her and
making sure he had the right information to report to the Board. Chad almost served two terms and
retired early in his last term. THANKS Chad!
Justin Sanchez
You can read his President’s story as well in this program. Justin served as Board President this past
year and did a great job in that capacity. Just like the others that are retiring this year, Justin served
on two committees during his five years on the Board; Building & Grounds and Finance/Executive.
During his stay on the Building & Grounds, he was very instrumental in following up on all of the
Capital construction and making sure everything was good. His past three years, he served on the Fi-
nance/Executive Committee and helped dissect the numbers and our overall operation. Justin retired
early this year to wrap up five years on our Board of Directors. THANKS Justin!
A BIG THANKS TO ALL OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS FOR SERVING OUR YMCA!
