2013 CLCA SFBA Chapter Picnic and Horseshoe Tournament To Our Chapter Shoe Hurlers By Jim Everett What do Girvin Peters and the esteemed Leo Ott have in common in addition to terms as Chapter President, BBQ grill mastery, a long friendship, and a love of globe-trotting? Their names engraved on the Perpetual Trophy for their first place finish in the Chapter Horseshoe Tournament in 2012. Their miraculous tosses are forever etched in the minds of those who witnessed this unexpected outcome, especially those they vanquished. It is almost time for two “someones” to knock them off that lofty perch. If you would like to pick a playing partner to dethrone the Kings of Shoelore, fill out the picnic/tourney registration form on page 5 and include it with your check for the picnic to make SURE you get that opportunity. RULES: Since the game more accurately reflects “skill” vs. “luck” the higher the winning point total, all rounds will be played to “15”, with the Final only at “21”. Both “closest to the pin” and “leaners” are worth 1 point and “ringers” worth 3 pts. In order to keep this often overly long event moving, the entry bracket WILL be restricted to the first 16 teams to sign up, NO EXCEPTIONS. YES, you can sign up upon arrival, but entries WILL be CLOSED once 16 teams have entered. There will NOT be a separate tournament for anyone based on either sex or age, although the Tournament Director (and it is NOT the ever-affable Rick Camin this year) may at his sole discretion, allow the “throw-line” to be moved up 5 feet. Whatever is the source of your prowess … be it Skill or Luck … please come and “have a toss” on us. One WARNING: the Domini Clan alone is fully capable of filling the roster, so tarry not if you want a shot at Chapter Infamy. Partners for uccessSBy Larry Edginton, HorizonWell, we’ve made it to the dog days of summer. It sure has gone fast. Pretty soon the kidswill be going back to school and it will be time for our Chapter Picnic, followed by theChapter Golf Tourmanet. I hope you can enjoy one or both of these great events.

Thank you to all the companies who stepped up this year to become Partners forSuccess for our chapter. Your support makes events such as our Beautification Awards --and our golf tournament coming in October -- possible.

Our Student Sponsorships provide much needed funds for local students of ornamentalhorticulture allowing them to become members of our chapter, attend our events, networkwith members and learn about the industry.

Please consider supporting our chapter and our students through our Partners Program. For more information, or to make your commitment, please email me, Larry Edington, [email protected] or call me at (408) 394-9313.

Whew! It’s been hotter than a branding ironon a steer’s... let’s just say it’s hot! Thathasn’t seemed to slow down business any.In fact, now is a good time to start sellingirrigation retrofits and water managementservices. Smart Irrigation shouldn’t belimited to July. It’s a year round businessopportunity.

Our chapter teams (that would be theboard, auxiliary and various committees)have been working hard planning andexecuting some great events. If you haven’tbeen taking advantage of these, check thecalendar on page 7 and make plans to dojust that.

I hope you were able to attend the greatawards program in June. Thank you to

Barry Cohen and his committee for pullingit off. I am always amazed at the scope anddetail of the projects. You all deserve a huge“atta boy!” for the work you do.

Our beloved Auxiliary is busy planningthe annual Chapter Picnic. This is always agreat family event with something for allages. The venerable Jim Everett is runningthe horseshoe tournament this year and islimiting the number of teams, so use theform on page 5 to sign up early. This eventis a great chance to bring out the little ladyand the youngin’s and share some timewith your CLCA family.

Another team that deserves recognitionis our golf tournament committee. Underthe inspired leadership of James Walker,

Mike Ruscoe, Jordan Telford and BethValdez are planning the annual Liar’s CupGolf Tournament, which will be played atCinnabar Hills in San Jose. We had so muchfun at the Battle of the Bays baseball game, that we will be inviting our friends from theEast Bay and Central Coast chapters over tojoin us for the golf tournament. Let’s showthem some good old hometown hospitalityand a really good time.

As you have no doubt heard, the CLCAAnnual Convention will be just down theroad from us in Carmel Valley. Yes, moregolf, and also a great opportunity to learnfrom your peers, educational speakers andthe Trophy Awards -- inspiration fromreally great landscape projects. How canyou pass all that up, especially when it willbe so close to home.

Again, I want to thank all the people onthe board and various committees for yourhelp in making this chapter run sosmoothly. You have made my job this year alot easier. I am learning so much from eachof you along the way.
