Celebrate A Century of Travel Adventures on California’s

Scenic Redwood Highway

The Redwood Highway has inspired travelers in search of adventure and beauty for more than 100 years. Connecting the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border, this sublime stretch of blacktop displays some of California’s best towns, coasts, mountains and vineyards. Most of all, it showcases the magnificent California redwoods, the tallest trees in the world.

Starting as a patchwork of stagecoach and log-ging trails in the early 19th century, the Redwood Highway connected rural communities scattered amid the virgin forests of the North Coast. After the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1933, bur-geoning automobile travel drew vacationers eager for rest and relaxation into the Redwood Empire.

Have you ever wanted to drive your car through a living tree? There are three places to do it on the Redwood Highway. Would you like to sample California wines without the lines? The Redwood Highway takes you through a relaxed, uncrowded part of wine country. Stop and watch amazing wildlife, including whales and elk, browse for antiques in country towns, or just experience nature and adventure. Take a side trip to Mendocino, Victorian Ferndale or scenic Lake County. But above all, be sure to stop your car and walk among the redwoods. These primordial giants, the tallest living things, and among the oldest, have changed little since the time of the dinosaurs, let alone since the Redwood Highway was built. Visit the tallest of the tallest in the Redwood National Park.
