Q: Why doesn’t Housekeeping vacu-um the cafeteria at night? Food is always under the tables when I come to work in the morning.

A: The cafeteria is scheduled to be vacu-umed every night. All tables are moved and the floors are fully vacuumed periodically. We apologize for any food that may have been missed. Glen Rogers, Environmental Svcs

Q: How long past your date of hire can your manger wait before they give your yearly review?

A: They have a 60-day window to get those done.Steve Sesterhenn, HR

Q: Why is the door across from elevator G on the first floor always locked? Employees and visitors trying to get to the ER then have to go outside and come back in at Entrance 5.

A: The door on the stair tower going to the outside is locked at all times. It is meant for egress only. The doors for Entrance 5 which are right next to the stairwell are on a schedule that unlock at 5am and then lock back down at 8pm for our safety. The entrance for the ED (Entrance 4) is unlocked at all times for access into the building.Steve Cusher, Safety & Security

Q: What is the dierence between Occu-pational Health and Employee Health? Who handles our Wellness program for things like fitness reimbursement?

A: Occupational Health deals with work-place injuries for Allen and other companies across the Cedar Valley. Employee Health, a specialized service of Occupational Health, deals with employee wellness. They pro-vide coaching and training on weight loss, smoking cessation, and other wellness issues a customer chooses. Even though Occupa-tional Health is in our building, staed with Allen employees, we are also a customer. So we select services from their sta to imple-ment at Allen. Our account representative is Ashton DeMoss.Steve Sesterhenn, HR

To my Allen family ~ A huge thank you to all who helped me celebrate my retirement last Friday — it was wonderful to receive so many good wishes. For the past 27 years, Allen has become a very important part of my life. I've come to appreciate all the great people I worked with and who have made Allen what it is today. I couldn't have picked a better, more dedicated group and of everything I will miss, I will miss the people and life-long friends I made the most. Again, thank you.

Q: In light of the shooting at West UnionHospital, are there any plans to increase security measures (i.e. metal detectors, visitor limitations, etc.)at Allen Hospital for sta caring for Mental Health patients, primarily ED, ICU, and MHU?

A: Patient and associate safety is always our greatest concern. With the installation of many new cameras around our campus, security of our campus has greatly improved. There are many more upgraded cameras monitoring the entrance and hallways of the Emergency department as well as the entrances to the ICU. These are high-definition cameras with the ability to zoom in and identify/capture suspicious situations.

The incident in West Union was very unfortu-nate. We look at these incidences to evaluate Allen’s responses to situations like that to determine if there is improvement we can make to our processes. At this point, we do not have plans to install metal detectors. Visitor limitation is made on a case-by-case basis, based on the best interest of the patient and the patient’s wishes. As always, it takes all of us being alert to create a safe environment for all of us. If something seems suspicious to you, bring it to the attention of the person in charge and Security. Security personnel are a key com-ponent to our health care team.Mary Hagen, CNE

Q: Since there is an increased push to use the stairs instead of elevators for sta here at Allen, is there any plan to improve the look of the stairwells to look more inviting?

A: Stairwells were de-cluttered, repainted and upgraded several years ago. If you have other suggestions, please let us know.Jim Waterbury, Marketing &Communications

BLUECREWResiliency StrategiesMarty Colwell

At UnityPoint Health, we know that while caregiving can be immensely rewarding, it can also be stressful. Increasingly, research shows that caregivers who practice resiliency can increase their ability to recover quickly after stressful, traumatic or tragic caregiving experiences.

You can develop resilience by training your attention so that you're more intentional about your perceptions.

Programs incorporating these approaches can improve your resiliency, enhance your quality of life, and decrease your stress and anxiety.

The American Psychological Association suggests "10 Ways to Build Resilience", which are:1. Maintain good relationships with close family members, friends and others;2. Avoid seeing crises or stressful events as unbearable problems;3. Accept circumstances that cannot be changed;4. Develop realistic goals and move toward them;5. Take decisive actions in adverse situations;6. Look for opportunities of self-discovery after a struggle with loss;7. Develop self-confidence;8. Keep a long-term perspective and consider the stressful event in a broader con-

text;9. Maintain a hopeful outlook, expecting good things and visualizing what is wished;10. Take care of one's mind and body, exercising regularly, paying attention to one's

own needs and feelings.

There are many more strategies to practice and strengthen resiliency. For more infor-mation: • Call the Allen Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at 319-235-3550 to talk to a

counselor about skills to strengthen your resiliency.• Contact the Allen Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team if your de-

partment experiences a trauma (such as a death of a patient or loss of a co-work-er). They can provide a debriefing to help your team move through this dicultevent.

• American Psychological Association’ s brochure on building resiliency.

Mmmmm Pickles! Why WeOxyCideMichelle Heine, Infection Prevention & Glen Rogers, Environmental Svcs

So you don’t like the smell of vinegar? No one really does. However, it is the new smell of clean. In August, Allen Hospital became the sixth UnityPoint Health senior aliate to intro-duce OxyCide to clean patient rooms and public areas. Why? Because OxyCide is aworkhorse that leaves no film or visible residue behind. It is a C. di sporicide, cleaner, disinfectant and virucide all in one. It is replacing four dierent chemicals that were usedto do the same work previously.

Does it smell a little like pickles? Yes, it does. Unfortunately, we can’t do anythingabout the smell.

What we can do is promise that this product poses no harm to anyone. In fact, it issafer than any other products we have used. When used properly, it bears no healthrisks and requires no protective equipment for use — no gloves, no eye protection, nomask. To help illustrate the safety of the product, here is a comparison of the first aidmeasures recommended for our old product and the new product.

Remembering Thosein Shelter

Grace Kohl at The Salvation Army called today with a spe-cial request for us. She knows Allen associates have helped before, and she needs our help again.

On Christmas morning, up to 50 men, women and children will wake up in either the Men’s Shelter or the Women’s and Children’s Shelter in Waterloo. The Salvation Army won’t even know who will be there until December 24. Shelter residents on Christmas morning will include babies with their mothers and a number of children, some sleeping two to a bed. In years past, an anonymous donor has helped the Salvation Army buy small gifts to remember every shelter resident by name with a stocking of small gifts. This year, their donor is unable to do so. That’s why Grace called us.

It’s easy to help:• Give gift cards, not cash or checks:

• Just purchase a small gift card for $15 to $25 fromTarget or Walmart, where the Salvation Army can dothe most good with your gifts.

• Mark cards or your envelopes with the dollar valueof the card to help the shoppers.

• Bring or send your gift cards to Allen Marketing at thehospital by Friday, December 19. We will deliver thecards to Grace for you.

• Be sure to include your name(s). We will publish adonor list, keeping amounts anonymous other thanour total gift from UnityPoint Health – Waterloo.

Then the Salvation Army staff will shop for and wrap gifts on Christmas Eve to make sure every shelter resident is remembered. The gifts they buy are small and practical for the adults, small and huggable for the kids. But the size and price of the gifts don’t begin to measure their impact. Shelter residents have so little that any remembrance at all is often their entire Christmas celebration.

Questions? Contact [email protected] or [email protected].

Thanks for considering this request. Grace called us first, knowing we care.
