Let’s define the characteristics of a summary.• Summaries are significantly shorter than the original• Summaries follow the organizational pattern of the
original• Summaries include the main ideas• Summaries do not include the opinion of the person
who wrote the summary• Summaries paraphrase the original authors’ words
Collins’ Ten Percent Summary
• Specific type of summary• Summary of an article that is only 10% of the original length• Best used to condense nonfiction or expository writing that is
between 500-2,000 words long• Main ideas and important details in writer’s own words. • Clear, accurate information with NO opinion.• Promotes greater comprehension and can be used to assess learning
What is an FCA?
• Focus Correction Areas (FCA) FCAs were cited in the meta-study Writing Next as a BEST practice in writing instruction• FCAs are a powerful tool to target areas of improvement • FCAs allow teachers to grade papers quickly and
efficiently• FCAs are the rubric for scoring the writing• Focus Correcting is a selective approach to grading
student writing that allows students to concentrate on a few growth areas at a time out of hundreds of possibilities.
