MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
For over 92 years the Akron Art Museum has enriched lives through modern and contemporary art. The museum’s commitment remains steadfast in our belief that everyone deserves a quality art experience. We activate our vision through our world-class collection, innovative art education programs and our internationally acclaimed John S. and James L. Knight Building. Collectively, these three components create a truly memorable art experience for our members and visitors. The Akron Art Museum is recognized as a valuable cultural asset and has become an institutional pillar for the revitalization of downtown Akron. The museum also recognizes our responsibility to be a valuable resource and actively seeks strategic partnerships with other organizations to enhance the cultural health and wellness in our community.
To that end, this year’s 19th Annual Auction showcases the depth of support the museum receives, beginning with your support tonight, to the museum’s board of directors and from our generous supporters and dedicated volunteers, who enable the museum’s staff to activate and facilitate the Akron Art Museum Experience. This annual event is critical to the life-blood of the museum and could not be accomplished without the leadership of our 2014 auction co-chairs, Drew and Laura Engles. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to Drew and Laura and the museum’s auction committee for providing their expertise, guidance and assistance in organizing this year’s event.
I would also like to recognize Lexus as our 2014 Auction Presenting Sponsor. Together we share a common commitment to The Pursuit of Perfection.

MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS
We would like to welcome you to the 19th Annual Auction to Benefit the Akron Art Museum. For nearly two decades, our community has set aside one evening where we come together to both celebrate the good fortune of having this wonderful institution in our midst as well as ensure that future generations continue to enjoy this same phenomenal art experience. This past year alone, well over 9,000 students walked through our galleries to learn about art and view the collection.
The success of this event, where we find ourselves at the nexus of fabulous art, great food and fine wines, is no small undertaking. We have had the privilege of working with a dedicated committee of volunteers, some of whom have served in this capacity since the very first auction. We have had unprecedented support from the entire museum staff, many who work late into the night to make this event run flawlessly. We are grateful to Wine Trends and Duckhorn Vineyards for bringing all that is wonderful about Napa Valley here to Northeast Ohio. Finally, we must thank our sponsors and donors who, year after year, display an unparalleled level of generosity. For seven years, Lexus has partnered with the Akron Art Museum as our title sponsor, an unprecedented level of commitment.
We hope you enjoy your evening at the museum and we thank you for your generosity.
Cheers,
Drew & Laura EnglesCo-chairs19th Annual Auction to Benefit the Akron Art Museum

Founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has been crafting classic Napa Valley wines for nearly 40 years. This winemaking tradition has grown to include seven meticulously farmed Estate vineyards, located throughout the various microclimates of the Napa Valley. Focused on quality and consistency, these Estate vineyards are an essential element in making wines of distinction. Pioneering and perfecting Merlot as a premium varietal, Duckhorn Vineyards now makes several elegant Merlot and distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings that showcase its premium vineyard sites. In addition, the winery is known for its acclaimed Sauvignon Blancs. Beginning with the 2006 vintage, Duckhorn Vineyards unveiled The Discussion, a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend representing the pinnacle of the Duckhorn Vineyards portfolio. Several years later, the winery debuted its first Napa Valley Chardonnay.
WINE
2012 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc2012 HARVEST NOTES
The 2012 growing season offered near-perfect growing conditions. Though budbreak was late due to
heavy spring rains, warm weather during bloom allowed the vines to set a large crop. Increased yields
were the result of more berries, not larger berries. This translated into even higher quality in the winery,
as the skin-to-juice ratio remained ideal. Slightly cooler-than-average post-veraison weather and a
lack of any heat events allowed for greatly extended hang time. Harvest was two-three weeks later
than average and the grapes arrived at the winery in pristine condition.
COMMENTS FROM THE WINEMAKERThis is a classic expression of our Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc with aromas of grapefruit, lemon curd
and nectarine, as well as rich, underlying notes of vanilla and homemade marshmallow. A smooth-
textured entry gives way to tingling acidity that shows off the citrus elements beautifully, while adding
length to flavors of cantaloupe, Asian pear and Fuji apple. The finish is persistent and refreshing with
long mineral notes.
MIGRATION - 2012 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir2012 HARVEST NOTES
Since our first vintage in 2001, Migration has developed a refined and compelling style that balances
vibrancy and finesse. Defined by the idea of movement, Migration is dedicated to going beyond
our Anderson Valley origins and exploring Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the finest cool-climate
winegrowing regions. This exploration has taken us to the storied vineyards of California’s Russian
River Valley, where clockwork fog and Goldridge sandy loam soils have contributed to a Pinot Noir with
beautiful, high-tone red fruit flavors of strawberry, cherry and cranberry and enticing hints of orange-
cinnamon spice.
IN THE VINEYARDWith near-ideal temperatures throughout the growing season and no significant heat events, we were
able to set an excellent crop and achieve optimum ripeness in all of our red varieties. We further
enhanced quality by dropping any grape bunches that did not meet our exacting standards. This helped
the remaining fruit to develop concentrated varietal character, which resulted in wines that are dark,
full, flavorful and very well balanced.
COMMENTS FROM THE WINEMAKERSavory and complex with enticing fruit aromatics, this wine captures the essence of Russian River
Valley Pinot. Sophisticated aromas of bacon fat, baking spice and forest floor add nuance to intense
layers of blackberry, cherry and preserved strawberry. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine has a
lovely tannin structure with refreshing acidity that supports the fruit and draws the wine to a long and
satisfying close.
FEATURED WINES
2012 Napa Valley MerlotOur Napa Valley Merlot is a complex blend of several individual vineyard lots, incorporating fruit from
our Estate Vineyards and from top independent growers throughout the Napa Valley. The final wine is
a rich and cohesive expression of the entire Napa Valley, reflecting the varied microclimates and soils
of this unique appellation.
2011 HARVEST NOTESIn one of the coolest growing seasons in memory, we benefited greatly in 2011 from our 35 years
of experience farming Bordeaux varietals. To counteract uneven vine growth due to unusual spring
weather, we did meticulous green thinning. We also gently opened up the canopy to expose the fruit,
were judicious in our picking schedule, and sorted meticulously both in the vineyards and winery.
The majority of our Merlot came in before the October rains, and due to our quality adjustments
the remainder of our fruit fared well until it was harvested. Warm up-valley locations like Oakville,
Rutherford, St. Helena and Calistoga were particularly successful, and overall the resulting wines are
pure and elegant.
COMMENTS FROM THE WINEMAKERThe cooler 2011 vintage yielded an aromatic Merlot with vibrant red fruit layers of Rainier cherry and
spiced plum, as well as notes of licorice, tobacco leaf, cardamom and thyme. Hints of cedar, leather and
savory spice from aging in French oak barrels contribute depth and nuance, while a streak of uplifting
acidity adds dimension to this wine’s smooth velvety texture. Dusty tannins frame a sophisticated
finish.
MIGRATION - 2012 Russian River Valley ChardonnayDefined by the idea of movement, Migration is dedicated to exploring Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
from the finest cool-climate winegrowing regions to create wines that highlight lush fruit, bright
acidity and impeccably balanced oak. To craft our flagship Chardonnay, this exploration took us to
California’s Russian River Valley, where layers of ocean fog cool the vines that grow in the region’s
famous Goldridge sandy loam soils. Reflecting this world-class terroir, this vibrant and sophisticated
Chardonnay combines white flower aromatics with enticing lemon custard and stone fruit flavors.
IN THE VINEYARDThe 2012 growing season offered near-ideal temperatures, and with no unseasonable frosts, we were
able to set a full crop. Temperate weather throughout the summer and a lack of heat spikes, meant
the fruit ripened slowly, developing rich flavors, while maintaining excellent acidity. Cooler fall weather
slowed down ripening and allowed us to pick everything exactly when we wished. As a result, our 2012
whites show beautiful varietal character with a solid citrus base and abundant ripe tropical fruit.
COMMENTS FROM THE WINEMAKERDisplaying all the complexity and concentration that has made Chardonnay from the Russian River
Valley famous, this alluring wine offers stone fruit aromas of nectarine and peach, underscored by
inviting layers of orange blossom, crème brûlée, toasted marshmallow, fennel and hints of sweet vanilla
oak. On the palate, mouth-filling richness is balanced by a streak of intense acidity that adds to the
wine’s length and focus.

The 2007 vintage of Bordeaux produced elegant wines, full of fruit, but presented with finesse. The wines are soft and seductive. Two each of six Bordeaux from the great 2007 Vintage. These wines are ready to enjoy now, but should hold well for 15-20 years.

12-Bottle Case of Caymus Cabernet 2011
Since the 1970s, the Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon has captured the spirit of the California cabernet style that put Napa on the map: it is big, dark, rich and fruity, a wine that is excellent with food, and so well structured it is equally good on its own. Caymus was named “Best Winery for Cabernet” by Wine Spectator. This 2011 vintage is young and vibrant – drinkable now and will improve for at least 10 years.
