A Prayer for Renewal

Lord, we are your people, the sheep of your flock. Heal the sheep who are wounded, touch the sheep who are in pain, clean the sheep who are soiled, warm the lambs who are cold. Help us to know the Father’s love through Jesus the Shepherd and through the Spirit. Help us to li up that love and show it all over this land. Help us to build love on jus ce and jus ce on love. Help us to believe migh ly, hope joyfully, love divinely. Renew us that we may help renew the face of the earth.

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 29, 2021 Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. ~ James 1:21b

Doers of the Word The second reading for today begins a five‐week series of selec ons from James, a le er that is classified among the so‐called “catholic” (or universal) epistles because they are addressed to a general audience rather than to one par cular community. Today’s text offers important advice for Chris ans of every genera on. God is first cited as the author of all gi s, and in par cular, reference is made to the gi of bap sm by which we have been made the “first fruits” of the new crea on. What follows is advice based on a very Jewish under‐standing of the “word” as an ac ve force, opera ve in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, become “doers” of the word, our claim to faith is empty. Today and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us that it is equally important to do the “works” of love, for example, by caring for the “orphans and widows in their afflic on.” ~Copyright © J. S. Adults interested in becoming Catholic or seeking the Sacraments of

First Eucharist or Confirmation

If you or someone you know is in‐terested in becoming Catholic or comple ng their Sacraments of Eu‐charist or Confirma on, please contact Maureen Tiffany at m [email protected] or call the Parish Office 925 830‐0600, x222.

Our prepara on is on‐going so you can join us any me. If you are 18 or over and have not been Confirmed, you might want to consider a couple of things that could be a part of your future: In order to be a godparent, you have to be a

Confirmed prac cing Catholic. In some countries and Dioceses, you have to be Con‐

firmed to be married in the Catholic Church (although this is not a requirement here, there are some coun‐tries where it is).

Please note that Adult Confirma on only occurs once a year.

St. Vincent de Paul News

Our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society has been very busy during the past 18 months of this difficult and unprece‐dented me of COVID‐19. Your generous dona ons for the special collec ons on 5th Sundays have allowed us to help families and individuals who are struggling financially. We’ve been able to provide financial assistance for food, u li es, vehicle repair, rent, furniture, and clothing. We also joined with Food for Friends to provide food baskets directly to our neighbors in need. Last month we were able to provide Target gi cards to families with children to help with the purchase of back‐to‐ school clothing and supplies. The special collec on this weekend, August 28‐29, will be for St. Vincent de Paul. You can donate online through our parish website, by U.S. mail to our parish office, or by placing your dona on in one of the collec on baskets at next weekend’s masses. We thank you in advance for your con nuing generosity.

What Jesus Did, What Jesus Said

The oldest account of what happened at the Last Supper comes to us not from the Gospels but from the First Le er of Saint Paul to the Corinthians: “I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, a er he had given thanks, broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me’ ” (11:23–24). In our celebra ons of the Eucharist, we are obedient to Christ’s command to “do this.” The priest, ac ng in the person of Christ, does what Jesus did and says what Jesus said. He takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and gives it to the Lord’s disciples. He takes wine, gives thanks, shares it with us. We believe that the en re Eucharis c Prayer is conse‐cratory, but we con nue to hold these words of Jesus in special reverence. They are called the words of consecra‐

on, and the eleva ons of the host and chalice, the genu‐flec ons of the priest, and the op onal ringing of a bell and use of incense remind us that we are in the presence of the Lord. ~Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Filmed beau fully on loca on in the Holy Land, this unique study takes a new and fresh look at Jesus—Who He is, what He is really like, what He taught, and what He did for our salva on. This encounter with Christ will inspire and empower you to center your en‐

ACTS: THE SPREAD OF THE KINGDOM 12 weeks before Christmas / 9 weeks a er … beginning Sept 22 & 23

Acts is one of three “founda onal” studies that we offer on a three‐year cycle. It instructs us how to live our lives by telling the story of how a few Chris ans, empow‐

ered by the Holy Spirit, were chosen to bring Christ and the Good News to the ends of the earth. They faced secular forces, internal strife, and hos le crowds. Despite all of this, they brought the kingdom of God to a broken world and the love of God to the hearts of all people.

Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom traces how the gospel witness spread outward in waves from Jerusalem and reveals how the seeds of Church structure and authority took root. Presenter Jeff Cavins shows how the joys and struggles of the early Chris ans, in living the life of Christ, apply to us today.

Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom will help you see your place in the Church as a disciple of Christ.

Three study mes available beginning Sept 22:

Wednesday mornings at 9:45 a.m. (via zoom un l we can use the parish campus and all are comfortable mee ng in person)

Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. (via zoom) Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. (via zoom)

UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF THE BIBLE

8 Sunday mornings at 9:45AM beginning Sept. 12

Once you’ve experienced the “Jesus” study, you’ll have a deeper apprecia on and will likely want to study more of the Bible. This “Unlocking” study will teach you how to read and truly understand the Bible by exploring the twelve me periods of the Bible and focusing on the 14 narra ve books that tell the complete story of the Bible, from Adam and Eve to Christ and the Church. The unique color‐coded Bible Timeline® Chart that accompanies the study arranges the key people, places, and events of Scripture in chronological order. This study is great for beginners and experienced students of the Bible, alike.
