Summer SlateBy Bebe Lavin

This year summer did not follow spring because Columbus really didn’t have a spring. In the Columbus tradition, the weather was erratic to say the least. One day was cold, the next hot.

What happened to “in between” spring, 2014? After a rough winter weather wise, spring never really sprung. And we come to summer. The air is warm or hot, the pollen count is often high yet the outdoors beckons. Summer brings its own slate of things to do and enjoy.

Graduations, from pre-school through college, have been enjoyed. School is officially out unless one attends summer school or college summer programs for high school seniors. I couldn’t skip over the summer college programs because I have something to say about one of them. My oldest grandchild, Sophia, 17, has been accepted to the M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) program for high school seniors. I am so proud of this young woman and her accomplishments. OK, after the proud Bubbe nachas comment, I continue on with the column.

At long last, the grass is growing, the birds are singing, the flowers are blooming and the happy sounds of children laughing and playing (unless they are looking at their various electronic devices), are seen and heard. Bicycles are everywhere and the helmeted riders surely enjoy the summer scenes.

Alas, there is no ocean around here, but the swimming pools are splashing and sliding. A visit to the pool is a sure way to cool off. The only sand, though, is in the sandboxes in back or front yards or playgrounds. This deficit is somewhat offset by the various children’s play things at some pools.

There are lots of walkers and runners. Outdoor concerts and dramatic performances are evident.

The Columbus Arts Festival will be here next weekend, a huge outdoor event. Baseball games are seen, soccer, too. Hopscotch is often chalked on the pavement. Children have set up their lemonade stands.

Summer marks the appearance of summer foods. Among these,

Based on Wexner Heritage Village’s long-standing record of success helping patients recover from a hospital stay and return home safely, key leaders from Wexner Rehabilitation have been invited to join an elite group of their colleagues charged with improving care for short-term rehabilitation patients across central Ohio. “It is a real validation of the hard work we do and the excellent care we provide every day to be invited to be part of the Skilled Nursing Facility Continuing Care Network,” said Tom Widney, Executive Director of Wexner Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care. “And we are honored to act as a role model for

other facilities looking to improve their patient outcomes.”

To be selected for the Continuing Care Network, organizations must demonstrate a commitment to performing well above the industry average in several key areas, including:

Hospital readmission rates Average length of stay Nurse-to-patient ratios Offering necessary therapies for

skilled rehab patients 7 days a week The percentage of patients who would

“probably” or “definitely” recommend the facility to others

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called for “freedom in our sovereign and independent state” during a prayer for peace with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Pope Francis.

Vatican officials had called the service on Sunday at the Vatican a “pause in politics” with no political intentions.

Abbas, Peres and the pope planted an olive tree in Vatican Garden following prayers by Jewish, Muslim and Christian leaders and invocations by the three leaders. They then entered the Vatican for a private meeting together.

In his invocation, Abbas spoke about the importance of Jerusalem to the Palestinian people and thanked God for blessing the Palestinians with Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus.

Along with speaking of a sovereign and independent state, the Palestinian leader asked Allah for “a comprehensive and just peace for our country and our region.”

Francis during his invocation said, “More than once we have been close to peace and the evil one has prevented it. That’s why we are here today. We need to lift up our eyes toward heaven and recognize we are the children of one father.”

Peres said in his invocation, “I was young and became old. I experienced

war, I tasted peace. Never will I forget the bereaved families — parents and children — who paid the cost of war. And all my life I shall never stop to act for peace, for the sake of the generations to come. Let us all join hands and make it happen.”

The Ted Lewis Museum will present The Ted Lewis Orchestra: Rhythm Rhapsody Revue for two performances on Saturday, June 21 at 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm. The concert will be performed at the historic Lincoln Theatre, 769 East Long Street, Columbus, Ohio. Tickets are $30 in advance and at the door. To purchase tickets and for more information visit www.tedlewismuseum.org or call614-469-0939.

The Ted Lewis Orchestra: Rhythm Rhapsody Revue will recreate one of the most famous big bands of all time, “The High-Hatted Tragedian of Song,” Ted Lewis. With his trademark battered old top hat, clarinet and his immortal catchphrase “Is Everybody Happy?”, Circleville’s own Ted Lewis captured the hearts of audiences for six decades.

Unrivaled in popularity in the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s, Lewis drew standing room only houses wherever he played. The revue will highlight his most popular hits including “When My Baby Smiles at Me,” “The St. Louis Blues,” “The Sunny Side of the Street,” “The Tiger Rag,” and of course, “Me and My Shadow.”

The fast paced, swinging 1940s revue features a company of 30 including a 13-piece orchestra, dancers, singers and Joseph Rubin as Ted Lewis. The fast-paced, swinging 1940s revue features a company of 30 including a 13-piece orchestra, dancers, singers and Joseph Rubin as Ted Lewis. The cast includes vocalists Eileen Burns, recently returned from a

world tour with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Erin Hannon, granddaughter of Audrey Zimm, baton twirler with Ted Lewis’ revue from 1939-1946, and Catherine Chicoine, lead soubrette with the Canton Comic Opera

Company. Ted Lewis (1890-1971) “The

High-Hatted Tragedian of Song” was born Theodore Friedman in Circleville, Ohio to Jewish immigrant parents. Starting in Vaudeville in 1910 as a comic clarinetist, Lewis moved to New York formed his own jazz band in 1916. His first break was in The Greenwich Village Follies (1919) where he introduced his theme song, “When My Baby Smiles at Me.” Over the years his band included such musical greats as

Benny Goodman and Jimmy Dorsey. Lewis made hundreds of records between 1919 and 1954 and appeared in several movies including Is Everybody Happy (1929), Here Comes the Band (1935) andHold that Ghost (1941) with Abbott and Costello. He had his own radio show and appeared on television and in nightclubs until his death.

Ted Lewis, his Orchestra and Revue appeared in Columbus at the RKO Palace, Loew’s Ohio Theatres for a record breaking total of 54 days, longer than any other star performer of the era. Ted was an annual visitor to Columbus, playing the Palace Theatre on

December 12-16, 1937; March 31-April 6, 1939; January 26-February 1, 1940; September 19-25, 1941; December 8-10, 1942; June 13-15, 1944; February 25-27, 1946.

Joseph Rubin is the founder and director of the new Ted Lewis Orchestra. One of the leading interpreters of American popular song, he has portrayed Ted Lewis, Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor in performances in New York and across the country to critical acclaim. During his research on Ted Lewis, Mr. Rubin discovered Lewis’ original orchestrations in the basement of the Ted Lewis Museum where they laid untouched since 1971. Mr. Rubin, a native of Canton, Ohio was appointed Curator of Music for the museum in 2012, cataloging and restoring the hundreds of manuscript orchestrations for use by the new Ted Lewis Orchestra. All of the arrangements in the Rhythm Rhapsody Revue are from this historic collection and have not been played in over 50 years. Mr. Rubin will also be wearing one of Ted Lewis’ original tuxedos from the Museum’s collection for this performance.

The Ted Lewis Museum’s mission is to further the life and music of Ted Lewis by displaying his memorabilia and providing music scholarships and instruments for Pickaway County, Ohio students. Founded in 1977 by Lewis’ widow, Adah Becker Lewis, the Ted Lewis Museum pays tribute to one of Ohio’s greatest citizens and one of the greatest entertainers of all time. The museum holds and exhibits Ted Lewis’ archives and music library in Lewis’ hometown, “The Capital of the World,” Circleville, Ohio. Admission to the museum is free and it is open every Friday and Saturday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. For more information visitwww.tedlewismuseum.org

This production is funded in part by the American Electric Power Foundation and the PPG Foundation.

first and foremost, is ice cream.Fresh fruit, peaches, berries,

watermelon abound. Fresh vegetables, corn, tomatoes and others are available. The best cold drink is water. It is important that everyone keeps properly hydrated when the heat drains you.

Picnics are everywhere, and outdoor grills bring their own specific odors. Hot dogs and potato salad are frequent summer foods. In 2014, hot dogs are not only beef but may be vegan or turkey or chicken. The very same goes for the ubiquitous hamburgers.

Outdoor porches are occupied by those watching and enjoying summer as it unfolds. I wish you a happy and safe summer, 2014.

Shabbat Shalom to everybody, everybody except ...the following:

For a President who seems to know nothing, do nothing, but is always really mad when he finds out how miserable his administration is performing and then after “ being really angry” he still sees nothing and does nothing until the next scandal pops up and then he gets really mad AND - OF COURSE - SEES NOTHING AND DOES NOTHING.

To Hillary Clinton who prior to the Benghazi hearings has leaked a story to Politico blasting those who would politicize such a tragedy, yes a tragedy oh you mean like “what does it matter how they were killed” kind of tragedy? The kind of tragedy where she was the first one to push a story about an internet video when nobody was even talking about it at the time?

The kind of “ tragedy” where the only person put in jail was the producer of the stupid internet video that was used as an excuse to cover up their incompetence and who knows what else?

For the legion of “plants,” poodles, sycophants of the Obama administration “friends” who go on countless talk shows, write columns all for the “collective” cause (the Obama fantasy collective, world) pushing the story that there have been dozens of hearings, tens of thousands of documents given, internal investigations,

and state publicly that this is all just Republican scandal mongering, for the IRS targeting of conservatives, the Benghazi cover up, the V.A., and many other brewing corruptions soon to be discovered.

Supposed endless hearings, volumes of paper “investigations” that do not question the people that they are protecting are all designed to fool, obfuscate and lie to a disinterested and apathetic public.

Finally this week for Donald Sterling who is an obvious racist who not only seems to hate any minority (he is one) but has a long career of acting on it. Yes to Donald Sterling whose “punishment” (which is unconstitutional) was to force him to sell his business which was valued recently at $500 million for $2 billion, which proves that maybe crime may not pay. But, in this case being a real racist does.

Listen to the birds chirp a welome to spring. The green shoots coming through and the soft winds confirm the season. But to me, the ultimate confirmation is

the crack of the bat (baseball) against on the onslaught of the ball.

There is, of course, an ongoing controversy as to whether baseball has been replaced as the national sport by football or basketball. I would say a

resounding, No!!”. When baseball season appears in the mellow springtime, who will deny the pleasure of watching a game outdoors? It is a mechiah (Yiddish for pleasure) to sit in the stands, watch the game, have a nosh ( snack) together

with the fans for either team.Full disclosure: I have been

a Chicago Cubs fan since I was 5 years old, and man, that’s a long, long time, really long. There are no fans like Cubs fans except for possibly those of the Boston Red Sox. The latter overcame years of losing seasons, and my Cubbies will also, hopefully in my lifetime, and time is running out.

Every Friday that the Cubs were in town, my Aunt Charlotte took my 5-year-old self to the ball game. Friday’s were Ladies [email protected] cents a ticket. This pattern continued over the years until, as a teenager, my friends and I would take one streetcar and a bus to get to the stadium. The official name is Wrigley Field, or just Wrigley to us native Chicagoan fans. Wrigley is the most memorable and charming ball park to this very day.

This year, 2014, Wrigley Field celebrates its 100th “birthday” event on April 23. It remains the most loved, cherished, charismatic field in existence. The ivy covering its expanse is unmatched in any other stadium. Until a few years ago, it was the only stadium without night lights. When they were finally installed, it took nothing away from the ambiance as was feared by naysayers.

There is a traditional saying, “There’s no place like Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs.” If ever

there was a truism….As teenagers, we would go early to

a game and sit in the grandstands to catch foul balls from the team’s batting practice. During the game, we would keep meticulous score guided by observation and the old scoreboard that is used to this day. How we would enjoy the hot dogs—the famous Chicago style hot dogs—an all beef on a poppy seed bun slathered with mustard and stuffed with peppers, celery salt, onions, tomatoes and French fries. Although I’ve seen many attempts to replicate a “Chicago hot dog”, I’ve never known any to meet the standard.

Following the game, the Cubs players would go outside the park and sign free autographs for the kids, which is unheard of today.

During the years that our kids were growing up in Columbus, we were also fans of the Cincinnati Reds i.e. the Big Red machine. What a time and team that was! My and my husband’s first loyalty, however, remained to the Cubs. Our sons and daughter now live on the east coast. My 12-year-old grandson, Aidan, in NJ, is a proud Yankees fan. His 11-year-old cousin, Saul, in DC is devoted to the Nationals. It appears that fandom begins with geography. My daughter in NY is a Mets fan, yes, the woebegone Mets. She says that stadium has great food options of all kinds.

I hope that baseball will always remain the national sport and be affordable to any kid who wants to see a game. Happy 100th birthday to Wrigley Field! This may be the year that our Cubbies go all the way. We Cubs fans have been known to say, “We bleed blue….”

“Take me out to the ball game……………” ”Play ball.”

Bebe Lavin has written the Bubbe Misehs column for several years. A native Chicagoan as well as a long time resident of Bexley, she is a fan of the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears (football), the Chicago Bulls (basketball), the Chicago Blackhawks (hockey) and inexplicably, the Green Bay Packers (football) in Wisconsin.

Should any reader be wondering if there is another baseball team besides the Cubs in Chicago, the answer is in the affirmative although the writer of this column has forgotten its name!!?!
