W hen Maguire took over the reigns of the pride of the league in 2012 he pulled a

masterstroke right out of the Wayne Bennett playbook by shifting Inglis from centre to fullback, a decision that the super coach made with Lockyer when he shifted his superstar from fullback to five eighth in 2004. Inglis took his promotion with both hands and played a big part when the Bunnies made the preliminary final, the first time since 1989.

W hen South Sydney coach Michael Maguire talks about Greg Inglis it’s not his on field attributes that spring to mind first. “People talk about his transformation as a player, I think just transformation as a person.” Maguire added that Inglis has a

“good blend to his life now, and it’s showing on the field. ”In 2013 along with helping spearhead the myrtle and cardinals tilt at breaking a 42 year premiership drought, any spare time he has will be devoted to his Business and Marketing degree he has just started. The QLD Origin centre got a taste of Uni life when he was at the Melbourne Storm, completing a Certificate IV in Youth Work at Swinburne University. But studying at Sydney University is something entirely different. “As big as I am, it’s pretty intimidating: I pretty much had to pick the scariest-looking university of them all,’’ When visiting the Camperdown campus for the first time the 2007 Clive Churchill Medallist commented “It looks like Hogwarts. I feel like I’m in Harry Potter.’’

Not that G.I. is going there just to collect a “participation medal.” In

a deep probing Interview for the Sydney University website, the 26 year old is already

thinking about life after football. Coming to

the realisation that you only have a short time in the game “I think a

degree would do wonders for me and what I want to do with the rest of my life after football and hopefully

it will inspire some other Indigenous kids to go all

C oming into 2012 Josh Reynolds was a fringe first grader playing for his future. New coach Des

Hasler had just left Manly where under his reign they had won two premierships and was looking to be reunited with boom Kiwi Kier-an Foran. In the end Foran decid-ed to stay at Brookvale meaning Reynolds would be able to show his new coach what he could do and what a year 2012 would be. Along with Ben Barba who had his breakout year, they formed a dy-namic duo and were crucial in the Bulldogs charge to the Grand Final where they were gallant in a 14-4 loss to the Melbourne Storm.

He will make his NSW Origin debut off the bench in the 2013 se-ries opener against the Maroons after injury forced Newcastle’s Kurt Gidley out. At club level, 2013 got off to a shaky start for the Bulldogs. Their side was decimated for the opening rounds with injuries to Sam Kasiano and Frank Pritchard, Steve Turn-er retiring and James Graham still serving a suspension for biting Billy Slater in

Classy centre Michael Jen-nings is part of the “New 3”, The Sydney Roost-ers trio that consists of

himself, Sonny Bill Williams and James Maloney who have been instrumental in their 2013 resur-gence that sees them entrenched in the top four.

The NSW centre only completed the move to the Tri-Colours in mid Janu-ary after the Roosters finally came to terms with the Penrith Panthers. With the departure of Joseph ‘BJ’ Leilua to the Newcastle Knights, the Roost-ers salary cap pressure was eased enough for the 24 year old to make the switch.The former Panther has found the transition smooth saying,

“only thing that I was nervous about was meeting the new faces and finding new friends.” Michael has reveled under Trent Robinson saying he’s a “good people person” and adding the foundation club has “made my transition a lot easier.”

He polarises opinion amongst fans like no oth-er. The former NSW Ori-gin half wears his heart

on his sleeve and is willing to speak his mind. The sort of play-er you either love or hate. I talk of none other than Dragons play-maker Jamie Soward.

After beginning his career at the Syd-ney Roosters in 2005 he moved to the Dragons mid season in 2007 in order to get a regular starting spot. His game went to another level under the guidance of Wayne Bennett and in 2010 Soward became a premiership winner when the St George Illawarra Dragons defeated the Sydney Roost-ers 32-8 in the Grand Final.In 2014 he will head to the foot of the mountains to join the Penrith Panthers as their big name signing. Soward is seen as instrumental in the rebuilding phase that Penrith are currently un-dertaking after losing the likes of Petro Civoniceva, Michael Gordon, Michael Jennings and Luke Lewis in recent years. Getting someone of the calibre of Soward was crucial. The Panthers General Manager Gus Gould went as far as to tell Triple M’s Grill Team that they had “just bought the best kicking game in the business.” The Influential figure added that Soward would also bring to the club leadership, experi-ence and professionalism.

Having scored two tries against Penrith earlier this year, Woods was lucky he didn’t have his front

rowers union membership torn up. With a shocking injury toll to the likes of Keith Galloway and the departures of Gareth Ellis and Chris Heighington, Aaron has had to carry the inexperienced Tigers pack on his very young shoulders.

But that doesn’t seem to faze the Balmain junior. “That’s what we wanted, you want to be thrown in at the deep end, don’t want to come in and it to be easy.“ Woods took part in the Emerging Blues camp over the off-season with the likes of Adam and Josh Reynolds, Jamal Idris, Chris Lawrence and Josh Dugan. The 109kg prop met Laurie Daley for the first time and took a lot

from his time in camp. The NSW coach told all the players what he wants to see from them week in week out for their clubs. Former Blues captains Brad Fittler and Andrew Johns gave talks on what representing their state meant and Origin football is a “different game you have to prepare for.”

When the NSW team was announced there was one name not there. Not because of injury or an

off field discretion. I speak of Jamie Lyon.

The Manly premiership winning captain would be an automatic walkup in both NSW and Australian sides and is arguably the best centre in the game with great attacking flare, solid defence and handy goal kicks. But he has shunned further representative honours. His decision to make himself un-available for state and country has benefit-ed the Sea Eagles immensely, who are usu-ally down on troops during the Origin period because they provide so many players to the games showpiece. Now 31, Lyon re-committed to the club for another two years witch will see him more than likely finish his career at Brookvale, which seemed in dan-ger earlier this year when rumours started circulating that he wanted an immediate re-lease to join the Gold Coast Titans.

This year’s State of Origin Series is arguably the most important in New South Wales history. After

a heart breaking one point loss thanks to a Cooper Cronk field goal in game 3 in 2012 the sky

blues lost their seventh straight series loss dating back to 2006. The makeup of the NSW spine is the big talking point going into the series opener. The performance of the men wearing the one, six, seven and nine on their backs on Wednesday June

5th at ANZ Stadium will be crucial in whether or not the Blues stop an eighth straight series loss to the Ma-roons. We look at who we expect to be playing Fullback, Five Eighth, Halfback, and Hooker come game 1.

The biggest series of his career that will either make or break him. The son of former NSW Origin winning Captain and Coach Wayne Pearce will have the weight of the entire state on his shoulders. He has matured under new Roosters coach Trent Robinson and is playing arguably the best football of his career. Seems to have put his “partying” days behind him and will be looking to bring club form with him to the Origin caul-dron and steer NSW to a series win for the first time since 2005. With two games in Sydney this year he will never have a better chance to do so.

Has the opportunity to lockup the NSW fullback Jersey for the next five years with a series win in 2013. Has always thrived in the Origin arena and saves his best football for it having scored seven tries. Will have injured incumbent Brett Stewart knock-ing on the door come game two so pressure will be on the Parramatta custodian to deliver otherwise being banished back to the wing where he has played the majority of his Origin career is a distinct possibility.

The NSW coach Laurie Daley chose the Roosters No. 6 on a “gut feel”. Believes he has had a “calming influence” on Mitchell Pearce since linking up with the-Bondi Junction based club this year. Will be the Blues goal-kick-er for the series so a lot will be expected of the Country Origin No. 6. Has struck up a lethal combination with fellow Rooster Michael Jennings so expect to see the Maroons target them.

Showed he belonged in Origin when he made 63 tackles in their 16-12 win in game two in Sydney last year. With Danny Buderus tipped for an Origin recall and Blues legend Steve Roach label-ling Robbie not an “Origin type player” Farah showed his metal going on to win the Brad Fittler Medal as the Blues best in 2012. Has had a tough start to 2013 with the hapless Wests Tigers stuck at the bottom end of the ladder. Has his work cut out for him facing up against the best rake in rugby league, QLD Captain Cameron Smith.

With only a few days to go before the first match of the FIFA Confed-erations Cup kicks of in Brasilia on 15 June, more than 588,178 tickets have already been sold. A stellar line up of four FIFA World Cup winners (Brazil, Italy, Uruguay and

Spain) are eagerly awaiting the start of the tournament. All hope is not lost for the rank outsiders - Japan, Nigeria, Mexico and Oceania Champion Tahiti. While some teams will be happy to go back home minus severe humiliation, Brazil’s mentor Louis F Scolari will be expected by the ever-demanding Brazilian public to ensure the trophy doesn’t leave the country. The Seleção led by the most talked about Brazilian footballer Neymar, will have to overcome Asian kings Japan led by Keisuke Honda in their opening match and hope the cunning Mexicans who they’ll face next don’t cause an upset.

Brazil are always expected to win every match they play in. How-ever recent performances have left a lot to be desired and sug-gest the current side may fail

to live up to expectations. The world`s biggest exporter of foot-

balling talent will be carrying the expectations of the world`s most demanding fans on it’s lean shoul-

ders, and hoping the footballing gods smile on them when they kick off the tour-

nament on 15 June. Filipao will be hoping his young stars led by Neymar and Chelsea’s Oscar hit their straps early in the tournament to keep the boo boys at bay. Brazil may just scrap their way out of the group but don’t be too shocked if they don’t.

Reigning AFC Champions Japan will be go-ing into the first game confident to throw the Selecaos camp into disarray and further their own plans. Manchester United’s Shinji Kagawa, the Russia based Keisuke Honda and co will be the litmus test Brazil needs to gauge their prospects in the tourna-ment and beyond. I am predicting a huge upset when the blue samurai take on Brazil in the opening game.

Expectations are very high for the Mexican team, which has been labeled the most talent-ed in recent times. Jose Manuel De La Torre will have his work cut out in selecting the starting line ups during the competition. Players such as Javier Hernandez, Giovanni Dos Santos and Andres Guardado and a host of other talented youngsters will no doubt cause major head-ache to opposition defenders in the tournament.

The Italians will bring a young team to the tour-nament as they continue to building towards next year`s world cup. They are likely to face stiff opposition when they come up against the Mexicans in Brazil’s party capital Rio De Janeiro. Mario Balotelli may make or break the Azzurri’s aspirations in the

tournament. Cesari Prandelli will be hoping the mercurial star keeps his head while on the field and together with fellow AC Milan wizkid Stephan El Shaarawy the Italians will pose a big threat to all before them. I pre-dict they’ll have a very good tournament and even end up in the final if not winning it.

FIFA CONFEDERATIONSCUP BRAZIL 2013

Reigning European and Fifa World Cham-pions Spain need no introduction; the team has some of World football’s biggest names in their ranks and will no doubt be hoping for a good start in the tournament when they take on South America`s powerhouse Uru-guay. Once again FC Barcelona and Real Madrid players will dominate La Roja, it re-mains to be seen if Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque will retain captain Iker Casillas who has had an ongoing feud with club coach Jose Mourinho as the number one goalkeep-er in the tournament. Whilst the likes of An-dres Iniesta, Xabi Alonso and Iker Casillas may be advancing in age, one can’t under-estimate their influence and ability to keep the well oiled machine rolling on. Spain will be aiming to add to it’s already over stocked trophy cabinet when they take to the field. It’ll take a brave man to bet against them reaching the final and possibly taking the cup home with then.

Uruguay will tackle reigning World and European champions in their opening match of the Confeder-ations Cup. The Uruguayans marshaled by Diego Lugarno don’t mind rolling up their sleeves and putting a few noses out of joint where there’s a trophy involved. La Celeste have some excit-ing players such as Napoli’s striker Edinson

Cavani whose performances for his club have led him to be linked with all the big European club sides. Cavani has Luis Suarez for company upfront, La Celeste coach Oscar Tabarez will have his work cut out to keep his controversial striker in check as they begin their quest to bring another major trophy home. Suarez and co will back themselves to get out of the group and continue punching above their weight.

When it was announced that Tahiti had secured its place in this year’s Confederations Cup many people dusted off the old world map books to find where the country was located. Eddy Etaeta will be hoping his tiny Pacific Island team give a good account of themselves and exit the tournament with dignity. Tahiti will entertain AFCON champions Nigeria who, like Tahiti, will be hoping for a good showing at the champion’s cup. From there on, Tahiti’s remaining fixtures resemble a horror script. Spain will most likely be the most forgiving side which Tahiti will come up against, Uruguay on the other hand will have no gripes giving the tiny Pacific Island nation a harsh lesson in knock out football especially if they need the points to secure their passage to the next phase of the competition. Eddy Etaeta will have to be creative with his tactics to ensure his side leave the tournament with dignity.

Reigning CAF Champions youthful Nige-ria will be hoping to give a good account of themselves when their participation in the confederations cup kicks off. Ste-phen Keshi’s side has already been rocked by the withdrawal from the squad through injury by Chelsea’s flamboyant winger Victor Moses. It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of the team reacts to this late withdrawal. Striker Emmanuel Emenike and Sunday Mba will now have to be more clinical than ever in front of goal whilst Chelsea’s midfield general John Obi Mikel will be hoping captain and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama’s reflexes are as sharp as usual to keep their dreams on course.They are expected to easily get past an inexperienced Tahiti side and will be hoping for a good result against Uruguay before their final group match against Spain. Not much was expected of the unpredictable Super Eagles when they arrived in South Africa early this year for the AFCON. They have the talent required to get as far as the final, Stephen Keshi will have to be at his inspirational best to steer his side out of the group.

Graham Arnold’s Central Coast Mariners walked onto the Tianhe stadi-um hoping to cause a

major upset in Asian club foot-ball by bundling out of the Asian Champions League what is argu-ably Asia’s richest football club Guangzhou Evergrande.

What ensued instead was a master class from the Chinese side in the finer art of the facets of the game. The warning signs for the Mariners came as early as the 3rd minute when Argentine Dario Conca tested Matt Ryan’s reflexes as he forced the Mariners custodian to dive low and push the ball away. It took all but sev-en minutes for Guangzhou’s Brazilian hitman Muriqui to pounce onto a deft through ball from Chinese internation-al Gao Lin, which split open the Mar-iners defense and expertly slipped the ball past the onrushing Matt Ryan into an empty net. The Mariners came close to getting an equalizer when Kiwi live wire Michael McGlinchey’s vicious shot cannoned off the out-stretched foot of an Evergrande defender and came off the out-side of the upright. Sun Xiang was lucky not to see red as he flew into McGlinchey with a two-footed tackle escaping only with a yellow card to the dismay of the Mariners players and bench.A bad situation became worse for the Mar-iners when young gun Bernie Ibini brought down the slippery Muriqui inside his penalty box.The man who could easily put

the Mariners out of their financial woes with one pay check Dario Conca then stepped up to the penal-ty spot and applied the punishment. Guangzhou embarked on a shooting spree in the second half and Matt Ryan must have been breathing

2 Million Dollar Federal Sports Grant to The Club President Anthonio Cerqueira.

The Sydney Swan’s Sam Reid has been taking bumps all year and not just on the field, ma-

ligned by AFL critics throughout the opening eight rounds of the season. Yet as soon as he took that game-saving mark against Fremantle in Round 8 they were suddenly willing to forget their offenses for a week and pretend that they were best friends with the forward all along. Well the hy-pocrisy has not gone unnoticed. Sam Reid is a very good footballer. If they took a closer look at the 21 year old’s numbers and performances so far this season, they would notice that the 2013 model is vastly improved. After only eight rounds he is already averaging more disposals (11.5 per game in 2013 compared to 9.35 last

year), taking more marks (4.3 ver-sus 3.09) including a game high 11 against the Dockers, and whilst he may be kicking less goals he has still kicked more than at this point last season. More important than statistics though is his work rate that is seeing him influ-ence play across the ground and create a contest in the goal square like a key forward should. His efforts inside fifty have provided ball to the Swans 18 other individual goal kickers this season. All this whilst being tagged by the best defender on the oppos-

ing team each week at only 21 years of age. That key defender will soon be occupied with the much-hyped

introduction of power forward Kurt Tippett

after the bye. This will free up Reid to improve even further as he acquires more

ball, confidence and learns from an experienced power forward how to truly dominate a game. Then, once Reid hits his peak

in a few years, no defender will stand a

chance.

Like a hurricane, the BJJ is snatching participants every year. In 2001, less than 100 people were competing in official tournaments of the NSWBJJ (New South Wales state federation). Almost 13 years later, things have changed. The BJJ is taking off across the country, as proven by the 1st leg of the NSWBJJ championship at Sydney Uni Aquatic Centre last May 19th. The tournament brought together over 400 participants, representing the major academies of Sydney, such as Roots Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Gracie Barra Sydney, Gracie Sydney, Legacy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Giant Team, Lion’s Den Academy and many others. All the great names were there, proving their skills on the tatami. The big winner of the tournament

was the Gracie Sydney that won the general competition in both adult categories: GI (jiu-jitsu uniform) and No GI. Gracie Barra Sydney was the second, and Will-Machado was the third. Julio Guerra (Gracie Barra) was the absolute champion in the black belt, Sharer Kha (Will-Machado) in the brown belt, and Michael San Marzano in the purple (Legacy). In the kids division, the champion team was Roots BJJ with Gracie Sydney as runner-up and Will-Machado in third place.

course around Sydney’s landmarks, after a short silence in remembrance of the Boston marathon bombing victims.

By the end of the day, the event had raised $933,196 for over 700 charities. This year’s winner was Mel-bournian cross-country champion Liam Adams with a time of 1:04:36, beating Maroubra’s Harry Sum-mers for the $5000 prize by just 19 seconds. Anoth-er Melbourne resident took home the women’s tro-phy with a time of 1:12:44. The prize is dedicated to late marathon champion Kerryn McCann who died of breast cancer in 2008.
