The suspended officers have been identified as M Ravi Kumar, SI of Police, Shamshabad PS, P Venu Gopal Reddy, head constable, RGIA Airport PS, and A Sathyanarayana Goud, head constable, RGIA Airport PS. This unusually swift move was triggered apparently by the storm of protests that have rocked the state and else- where in the nation as well as the plethora of questions raised in various circles and platforms against the police's apathetic approach to the par- ent's complaint. On Friday, the National Commission for Women came down heavily on the Police Department for its "negli- gence and lack of common sense". Parents of Dr Priyanka Reddy had approached the police late in the night on Wednesday when their daugh- ter's phone was switched off and she was missing. Her par- ents alleged that they were made to run from one police station to another over juris- dictional issues. "Today a detailed enquiry was con- ducted on derelic- tion of duty on delaying the registra- tion of FIR relating to a missing woman of Shamshabad Police Station on the intervening night of 27/28.11.2019. Based on the findings, the following officers have been placed under sus- pension till further orders," said V C Sajjanar, Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad. Sources privy to the report told The Pioneer that the victim was forcefully made to drink alcohol and sexually assaulted again in the lorry after she died. Initially, the four men who plot- ted the crime had taken turns to rape the 26-year-old victim and smothered her to death in an open plot by the compound wall, the remand report mentions. The culprits then shifted her body to the lorry's cabin, where the corpse was again sexually assaulted by the men. The report mentions that the victim had called one of the accused from her mobile phone as her vehicle was not returned to her. The cops reportedly used her call data records to track and iden- tify the accused men. The men drove the vehicles to Kothur and set her body on fire after dousing it with kerosene and petrol. However, the Cyberabad Police claimed that the foregoing details of the remand report were not true. "Full details of the crime will be made public soon," said the cops. PNS n HYDERABAD Vociferous protests continued across Hyderabad and in many districts of Telangana on Saturday in the wake of the horrific gang-rape and murder of a 26-year-old vet on the out- skirts of the city earlier this week. Four men have been arrested for the crime. Police said on Friday that the accused would be taken to the Cherlapally Jail on a 14-day remand. In Shamshabad, where the gang-rape and murder took place, students organised a massive protest demanding justice for the victim. Anger and inflamed passions spilled out on to the streets as stu- dents and others gathered at Shamshabad, close to the res- idence of the vet, and staged a protest, bringing traffic to a standstill. Several residents stormed the Shadnagar Police Station, where the accused are being held, and blocked the road in front of it. They raised slogans condemning the crime and demanded 'encounter' (extra- judicial killing) of the accused in the case. The local people raised slogans such as 'We want justice' and demanded execution of all the accused. Police tightened security and deployed additional forces around the station when it looked as if the situation could go out of control. As a part of their protests, residents hurled slippers on police personnel who pre- vented the locals from enter- ing the Shadnagar Police Station. Andhra Pradesh may suf-fer further ignominyand see flight of

investors if the ruling dispen-sation persists in meddlingwith Amaravati, an urbanagglomeration originally envis-aged to earn the distinction ofbeing a world-class capital.

Amaravati was recentlyunder the spotlight when itwent missing from the Surveyof India's new political mapuntil the Union Home Ministryintervened and got it restored.

This indignity did not, how-ever, hide the ground realitythat AP lacks a capital withpermanent buildings for theSecretariat, Assembly and theHigh Court besides other vitalinfrastructure.

These are being run tem-porarily from expensively-built

structures. The idea is that thestructures would be put toother uses once the offices areshifted to fancy buildings envis-aged in the capital's core area. However, the permanent build-ings are nowhere in sight as NChandrababu Naidu, formerchief minister, pored endlesslyover blueprints of designs pre-pared by famous names likeNorman Foster and HafeezContractor.

If these plans were executedwithout so much dithering, fewcities could compete withAmaravati in beauty, eleganceand utilitarian value.Chandigarh would have becomepasse and Amaravati would becompared with Putrajaya,Malaysia's new capital. But,time was of essence after Naiduhad dispensed with the optionof utilising Hyderabad as thejoint capital for 10 years.

He chose to hastily shiftlock, stock and barrel toVijayawada, a congested com-mercial city ill-equipped tohost the administrative capital.Basking in the afterglow ofmasterminding the HI-TECCity in Hyderabad, Naiduwanted to immortalise himselfby building a swanky city for-getting that Le Corbusier, thearchitect, stole the credit overJawaharlal Nehru, the PrimeMinister, for buildingChandigarh.

Chief Minister Y S

Jaganmohan Reddy has shownno inclination to become avisionary. He views Amaravatithrough the prism of politicsand populism in order to garnersympathy of farmers whoselands have been acquired. Theentire concept, he feels, is a scamin which Telugu Desam func-tionaries and Naidu's croniesindulged in insider trading bypurchasing lands whose valuewould skyrocket later.

He has constituted an expertcommittee to take a compre-hensive re-look at Amaravati

for which the NaiduGovernment had acquired33,000 acres of land. All workhas come to a screeching haltamid confusion whether thecore area of the capital will stayin place or be shifted elsewhere.

Infrastructure Bank and aSingapore consortium have allbeen subtly asked to withdraw. Some of the investors are seek-ing greener pastures inTelangana.

Apart from the alleged cor-ruption in the land deals andinjustice to farmers, anotherlogic favouring scrapping ofexisting capital project is thepurported vulnerability ofAmaravati to flooding from thenearby Krishna. Putrajaya, experts point out, is built onexpansive marshland. China isbuilding airports in the middleof South China Sea. There isnothing modern engineeringcannot achieve.

Every Government has thedemocratic right to lay down itsown policies and reverse thoseof its predecessor, when neces-sary. At the same time, that gov-ernment is a continuous process

where one brick is laid atopanother to build a superstruc-ture of good governance, peo-ple's welfare and development.

Sudden U-turns in policieswithout innovations can resultin slowdown of growth and per-petual shortage of funds. TheSingapore consortium spent afew million dollars' while theState and Government sunkseveral thousand crores. Wherewill money come from in futurewhen the State's revenues startshrinking after total prohibitionis implemented and when wel-fare schemes gobble up morefunds?

The YSR Government's solu-tion to this dilemma is to builda smaller and less grandiosecapital of 3,000 acres. Thiswould be mean-spirited viewedagainst Jagan's generosity insurrendering all buildings inHyderabad belonging to the AP

Government to Telangana dur-ing his short-lived bonhomiewith K. Chandrashekar Rao.

Andhra has too many bifur-cation-related loose ends thatneed to be tied. Building a cap-ital is the principal among themafter the burial given to theSpecial Category Status issue. The Centre needs to dischargethe promises it had made toestablish institutes of excellence, build new ports and airports, and facilitate new industries.

People gave Jagan a massivemandate not just to punishNaidu for his acts of omissionand commission, but also toperform. Six months havepassed and he has little toshow beyond pumping in moremoney for welfare schemes. The rulers require the sharpvision of an eagle flying highabove and not a worm's-eyeview of men and matters.

Chandigarh would have become passe andAmaravati would be compared withPutrajaya, Malaysia's new capital. But, timewas of essence after Naidu had dispensedwith the option of utilising Hyderabad asthe joint capital for 10 years

According to Dhuraiswamy, itis no big deal for a strategist towork with a big party andchalk out a poll strategy whichmay result in winning thepolls or increasing their num-ber tally. Interestingly, TamilNadu alternates betweenAIADMK and DMK.

"In the current situation, theperception is that the DMKhas an electoral advantageover the ruling AIADMK. So,if DMK comes to power in2021 after hiring Kishor, thenit will help the latter in build-ing his brand equity," Sreenivasadded.

For Kishor, the Tamil Nadumarket will be new while pollstrategists are not new for thestate. Tamil Nadu saw theirentry in 2016 with PMKengaging Jhon Arokiasamyand DMK Sunil. On his part,Arokiasamy built formerUnion Health Minister andPMK leader AnbumaniRamadoss' image and suc-

cessfully postioned himself asan alternative chief minister-ial candidate.

The tagline 'Maatram,Munnetram, Anbumani' was agreat hit and has a recall valueeven now by politicians in dif-ferent parts of the country."Arokiasamy's strategy tookPMK's vote share from about3.5 per cent to 5 per cent in the2016 assembly polls,"Dhuraiswamy said. The imagemakeover of Ramadoss alsosettled the succession issuewithin the PMK. "Earlier toopolitical parties did strategisetheir communication focusand others. But they were insilos. The new age politicalstrategists unify those towardsthe common goal," a pollstrategist said.

"Working with a regionalparty gives the poll strategistthe necessary freedom unlikeworking with a national party.Further, we advice the partyleaders with data analyticswhich was not so earlier," hesaid.

Cops suspect suicidePNS n HYDERABAD

The Shamshabad police inves-tigating the death of a woman, whose charred body was foundnear the Siddulagutta templeroad in Shadnagar onThursday, suspect that shecommitted suicide by immolat-ing herself. According to police, the woman was identified as35-year-old Kavitha Bai, a res-ident of Baba Bolakdas Nagarin Upper Dhoolpet.

Shamshabad DCP NPrakash Reddy said KavithaBai was suffering from men-tal illness and was under treat-ment for quite some time. "Sheleft her house on Fridayaround 1 pm and is suspect-ed to have come to the placewith an intention to commitsuicide in the evening," theDCP said, adding that prelim-inary investigation indicated itwas a suicide.

The police said the womanwas captured by CCTV cam-eras on her way fromShamshabad main road to thespot where she was found.Footage shows the womancarrying a bottle, which thepolice suspect had petrol in it.

People at a nearby shootinglocation noticed her in flamesand alerted the police around8.30 PM, just after theCyberabad Police had con-cluded sharing the chillingdetails of the veterinarian'smurder case.

NCW observed, "There is nowoman investigating officerin the entire team investigatingthe case. The victim's familyhas still not been given anyprotection". NCW has giveninstruction to the DCPCyberabad to get CCTV cam-eras installed and checked atvarious locations in the city, particularly the toll plazas.

She observed: "It is the dutyof police patrol van to find outthe details of the vehicle parkedthere for two days, knowingthat there is driver, cleanerthere; it is common sense.Had the police taken cog-nizance of drivers and thevehicles, it would have beengood."

Shyamala asked the police toblacklist the persons responsi-ble for installation and han-dling of CC cameras. She said,"Police informed us about CCcamera which showed the vic-tim parking vehicle at 6 pmand returning at 9 pm. Whenthe vehicle was punctured dur-ing this time, it should be

clearly visible who has done it.I feel there is something wrongin the way the department isfunctioning. CC cameras areinstalled not to figure out howthe crime happened, but tomonitor it at regular intervals. They need to check it at leastonce daily as it is to monitorthe place. What is the point inhaving a CC camera if theentire picture is not visible?"

NCW noted that a policeofficer should know well inadvance about jurisdiction andcalled the entire stint as 'irre-sponsibility of police'. NCWsaid, "It was not time to discussjurisdiction, but was time totake action. Police didn't do.Victims' family said that policedidn't help them properly dur-ing enquiry. They should thinkfrom that person's perspectiveand immediately act on it.They are not supposed to sayjurisdiction. We can clearly seethe irresponsibility of policehere."

She said that the messagehad to be conveyed that strin-gent action would be taken, forwhich NCW has come here.

Phone of the victim remainsuntraced. Shyamala said, "Theydownloaded the recording ofwhat the two sisters spoke. There is an issue as where is thephone. No police gave infor-mation about where the phoneis."

The father approachedNCW for its help to get himtransferred to the locationwhere he stays. She said, "Herfather requested that if histransfer happens to the placewhere his family is residing, this wouldn't have happened.Police should have taken moreinterest"

She noted that people werescared to go to police stationthese days. Even though thereis police station, the environ-ment should be such that ifsomeone goes, the policeshould respond. She said,"Someone told that call 100.Nobody would think such sit-uation would happen and thatwe would need to call 100.Even the victim might have notthought. The deceased toldher father, 'If I didn't bring thevehicle today, how will I go to

duty tomorrow. She had thatmuch confidence and evenshe didn't think of other con-sequences. No person has rightto take other's life."

It was not just Telangana'sissue. Such incidents were hap-pening across the country. Thegovernment was also respon-sible, she said.

Rekha Sharma, chairperson,NCW said, "The lackadaisicalattitude of the police has com-plicated the case; had theycome into action immediately,it could have been avoided. Idon't see the seriousness yet, they still haven't been able torecover the mobile phone ofthe victim which could haveanswers to so many questionsin this case. Justice delayed isjustice denied. I demandimmediate charge- sheet andpunishment of the miscreants. This will serve a lesson andpeople will not dare to commitsuch a heinous crime ever.Rape is not just an offence; it'sa malice that is eating into soci-ety. Severe punishment is theonly way to get rid of this mal-ady."

Born in a small town of Rupnagarin Punjab, Manav Chhabranever knew that his videoswould take him to heights. It wascuriosity that made the 23-year-

old make videos on TikTok, then calledMusically. Four years down the line andthere’s no looking back.

“I am a law student and becoming asocial media star was never what I everdreamt of. I never thought that my videoscould create such a buzz,” Chhabra sayswho has over one million followers onInstagram.

If you have not been followingChhabra before and now are ready to findthe charming prince on social media, itwon’t be too easy for you. The reason beingthat Chhabra goes by the name of MrMNV on his social media handles.

“There are no secrets behind thisname. When I was in Class X, I random-ly made my Instagram account with thisname and fortunately some of my videoswent viral back then. Then, when I start-ed using TikTok, I decided to go with thesame name. After sometime, I asked myteam if I can change it and they suggest-ed to go with this one only as people res-onate with it and it has already become abrand. That’s how it all started,” he tells you.

The quantity of followers is not whatChhabra is after, instead it is the love andaffection that he seeks from them. “We allknow that criticism and trolling is a partand parcel of social media, but I have beenfortunate enough to have got supportivefollowers, who appreciate my work. I havereceived very few criticism in all theseyears,” Chhabra tells you who started mak-ing videos in 2015.

The app not only gained Chhabra theoverwhelming fame, but also gave a plat-form to stand on his feet. “I have completedmy graduation and just shifted to Mumbaia couple of months before. Now, I don’thave to ask for money from my parents anymore. I can stand on my feet and earnthrough showcasing my talent. And not

just me there are many others who havegot a platform through these apps and areusing it for all the right purposes. It wasthe need of the hour for the youth,” he says.

But not all that glitters is gold. Thereare some cons of being in the limelight too.“Sometimes you receive a lot of hatred andcriticism too, but as I mentioned earlier Ihave been fortunate enough to havereceived less amount of criticism,” he tellsyou.

But with increased opportunites comegreat competition. There are million oth-ers who are making one or the other videoson social media but one have to have some-thing different to shine among all.

“I don’t consider any particular creatoras a competition for me. Yes, the compe-tition is high, but I don’t focus on it much. All I do is to make sure that what I am cre-ating is original and is as per the audience’s

choice. Because at the end audience is theking,” he opines.

Making videos is not as easy at it seemsto be. It requires proper ideation and tech-nique.

“There is a long process behind thesevideos. All people get to see is the end-product but there’s much more that goesbehind in it’s making. First, I come up withideas. There are two types of videos thatwork on the social media — humorous oremotional. Either of the element should bethere in the video otherwise the video willnot work well. Also I try to give a twist oradd a punch at the end of the video to givea ‘wow’ element in it and to make it standout of the clutter. Second, I decide the placeto shoot. Third, after shooting it goes intothe post-production stage where we editthe video,” Chhabra tells you who prefersshooting videos on his mobile.

He believes that in order to producegood work, the environment has to be verylight. “I prefer working in an environmentwhere you don’t have to only work-work.We laugh and have so much fun behindthe scenes that it doesn’t feel like workingat all, instead it is more of a recreationalactivity for us. But that doesn’t mean thatwe don’t concentrate on it, we work withfull focus,” he says.

No doubt that Chhabra has mostlywomen fans, not only because of his looksbut also because his charming voice. “Yes,I had many female followers, but it is nowchanging,” he says with a blush.

A piece of advice for those who havejust started making videos and or the oneswho are willing to give it a try.

“Always be your own critic. Compareall your videos and see what worked foryou and what not. Change and modify thecontent accordingly. Try to make qualityvideos, don’t run after quantity. For those, who are new in the field, they have to beprepared for putting in some extra effortsas there is a whole lot of people makingvideos and you have to have some extraspark,” he tells you.

At a young age of 17, when mostof the teenagers are busy dream-ing of doing something bigwhen they grow up, a sweet andbubbly Bangalore-based TikTok

creator Salonee Singh was already makingthose dreams come true.

Singh always wanted to become anactor, but since she was good in studies, likeevery parent, they too wanted her to takethe conventional career route, which obvi-ously didn’t sit too well with her.

It was in February this year when Singhtook to TikTok to do a reality check. “I usedto make videos to analyse my expressionsand skills and always kept them in privatemode. One fine day, I showed them to myfriends who suggested that I should post

them on the app, this way I’ll get a better ideaof my skills. I started posting videos and allof a sudden my video where I am lip sync-ing Zakir Khan’s dialogues got viral. It earned10,000 views in very less time and I was oncloud nine,” she tells you.

Singh’s talent went unnoticed by her par-ents who had no clue of what she was upto. “One of my relative showed my videosto my father and it was only then that hecame to know that I have been making thesevideos for quite some time now. He was leftspellbound and was convinced that I ammade for acting and asked me to continuedoing this and that I have his support in this. His words motivated me and I decided tomake full use of the talent that I have in me,”Singh tells you.

Getting famous on social media andearning is not a piece of cake. It comes withits share of challenges. “It’s not as if one canget famous and start earning instantly. Ittakes time. I started earning after I crosseda million followers on the app while mybrother started earning with not even 100kfollowers in his kitty. So it all depends onthe quality of videos that you are making andthen accordingly you get offers for collab-orations and ads to work in. But with all thiscomes a lot of pressure that you can’t get ridof anytime soon,” she says and tells you thatshe is in Class XII and have her Boards duenext year but she hasn’t gotdown to study-ing yet.

“I have been travelling a lot these daysto shoot my videos. I have just returned from

Chandigarh after spending almost a weekthere, I also went to Bihar last month for thesame. This leaves no time to study but sincethis is what I love doing I have to manageit all,” she says with confidence.

With a smile worth dying for, Singh’svideos are a perfect blend of humour andcuteness. And that’s what has been help-ful in making her famous in less than ayear. “I don’t do any preparations for myvideos. Whatever I am doing in thevideos, is just real me. Those who knowme, they are well aware that this is how Iam in real life too,” she says and tells youthat she sees no one as a competition onthe app.

“I believe in making videos that havegood content, that’s it,” she says.

One may be familiarwith the adage:Teen tigada kaambigada. But, thelovable trio of

TikTok — Sameeksha Sud,Vishal Pandey and BhavinBhanushali, known by thename of Teen Tigada on social-media, have definitely madetheir mind up to prove theproverb wrong by hook or bycrook.

Always dressed in vibrantcolours, the cute and bubblySud charms everyone with herelegant smile while the hand-some boys impress everyonewith their classy dance moves.Often the trio is seen lip sync-ing songs and grooving ontunes in their videos that earnthem millions of views and notto mention the collosal amountof fame with it.

Sud is not only a TikTokstar, but an actor too. Sheplayed Asha Singh in Zee TV’sDoli Armaanon Ki, and alsoappeared in Gumrah Season 3and Fear Factor: Darr Ki SacchiTasvirein. And it goes unsaidthat she is a master of emotions.Be it doing comedy or merelygiving random expressions, she can do it all. However, likemany others Sud too didn’tthink of making it big on theapp and taking it as a full timeprofession initially.

“It has been more thanthree years now since I amusing TikTok. It all startedwith me making videos in myfree time during the shoots. Iused to have a lot of free timeand thought of utilising it cre-atively and TikTok was intrend, that’s how I came across

the app. After sometime, theshow that I was shooting for gotover and I realised that peoplewere loving my videos. So Ithought of taking it up full-time. Now we have a YouTubechannel too where we post ourvideos regularly,” she tells you.

The idea of coming upwith a group came as an inspi-ration to Sud by watchingAwez Darbar and team on thesame app. “We took inspirationfrom Awez and his team forthis idea. Also, team work iswhat that works well on theapp. So the three of us decid-ed to make a team as we all liveclose to each other’s houses. That’s how the Teen Tigadagroup came into being.

Gradually people started likingseeing the three of us together. The videos earned us muchlove and appreciation. Sincethen there’s no looking back,”she tells you.

Now that the trio is mak-ing a statement on socialmedia, all of them make surethat they make videos togeth-er. “We make sure that we aremaking at least some of ourvideos together if not allbecause this has become ourUSP and we have to make timefor this,” she says and gives ahint that there is much more instore for the group as they willbe coming up with differentprojects soon.

Sud has a success mantra to

share. “When you start makingthe type of videos which are intrend but with a twist or a dif-ferent element in it, that’s howthe videos get viral. You haveto follow the trend but at thesame time stand out of the clut-ter,” she tells you.

She tells you that she don’thave any favourite video of herbecause all the videos requiresame amount of effort and itbecomes hard to do the differ-entiation and pick one. “Inevery video, my team and Ihave put in the same amount ofeffort. We work hard to get thedesired results and this makesit difficult for me to name oneas favourite,” Sud says.

The dark side of being asocial media influencer is thatyou have to be responsible ofthe stuff that you are upload-ing on social media. There is noroom for mistakes. “Beforeuploading any video, I thor-oughly check my videos for atleast 15-16 times so that noth-ing that I am putting forth hurtthe sentiments of others. I alsoask my mother to go throughall my videos before I uploadthem in case if I have missed onsomething. One has to have abird’s eye view on all the con-tent. More so, if you are a girl,”she says.

What Sud is looking at infuture, only time will tell. Butkeeping in mind the trio’schemistry, watching them onthe small screen or for thatmatter on some digital platformwill definitely make for aninteresting watch. The growingrise of social media only addsto the possibility of for the teentigada.

Gone are the days when social media was meant for entertainment only. Now, this platform is not onlygiving youngsters a chance to showcase their talent but is also helping them make money. MUSBA HASHMIchats up some young and enthusiastic TikTok performers who are making it big

Grammys, AmericanMusic Awards,

successful albums, I’dpick my kids any day

over any of it— Toni Braxton

The premise for compatibility in amarriage is set by the inherent habitsand tendencies of the two people

his is your third visit toIndia since the first timeyou came here in the1980s. What changeshave you witnessed in thecountry? And what’s theagenda behind the visit?I have had two visits as a

politician. Back in 1981, I had spentthree months in India travelling aroundmost of the country. I came away fromIndia then with a strong sense of itsstrength and vast potential. Ever since Ihave believed that the rise of India wason the horizon and when that wouldhappen, it would be good not just for theIndians but the entire world. As thePrime Minister, I was keen to swiftlydeepen and strengthen the relationshipbetween the two great nations. I put inplace the nuclear understanding as aresult of which we are now exportinguranium to India. I also did my best torevive the quadrilateral security dialoguebetween India, United States, Japan andAustralia. My one disappointment is thatas Prime Minister, I was not able tofinalise the free trade deal that PrimeMinister Narendra Modi and I had com-mitted to doing. I am sure that ScottMorrison, the current Australian PrimeMinister, will put this deal back on trackwhen he visits India in February nextyear.

You have a great personal rapport withPrime Minister Modi. How do you seehim as a person and a global leader?I think Narendra Modi has been themost significant Indian Prime Ministerin many years. Obviously, PrimeMinister Jawaharlal Nehru was a giant ofhistory. Even Mrs Indira Gandhi was asignificant Prime Minister, even if therewere some flaws in her overall record.Modi became Prime Minister with awonderful sense of vocation and com-mitment. He is one of those prime mi-nisters who has been tirelessly workingfor his people. Under his regime, there isno sense of India underperforming andunderselling itself. India has always beena colossus of a subcontinent, but it hasn’talways been active globally. With Modias Prime Minister, it has found its voiceagain. I think that’s going to be good forIndia and the world.

You have always pushed for free tradedeal between the two nations. Why?Prime Minister Modi has created a lot ofgoodwill for India in Australia, and viceversa. The important thing is to turn thisgoodwill into practical actions and con-crete outcomes. This is where the freetrade deal comes into place. Australiancoal, for instance, pays 5 per cent tariffwhen it comes to India, while Indonesiancoal doesn’t pay any tariff. Australia is areliable supplier of high quality coal andthat tariff on its coal is in reality a tax onIndian consumers. It’s a tax on Indianenvironment, too. Australian coal, afterall, is cleaner than Indonesian coal. Thefree trade deal would mean cheaper andcleaner power for Indians.

What are the common challenges andopportunities? Both countries want a stable, peacefuland freer world. Both have a strong anddemonstrable commitment towardsdemocracy, rule of law and internationalsystem that respects the rights of allnations. I think the sheer commitmentfor democracy and rule of law makes usnatural partners.

Despite shared values, interests andaspirations, the Indo-Australian rela-tionship couldn’t justify its full poten-tial. Where do you think things havewrong?I don’t think things have gone wrong. Forme, they haven’t gone sufficiently right. After all, the relationship between thetwo nations has never been bad. But Iconcede that the relations have been a bitunderdeveloped. Prime MinisterMorrison has said recently that as far ashe is concerned, India is placed in thefirst tier of Australia’s friends. Theimportant thing is to transform thisfriendship into practical cooperation. This is where the free trade deal comesin. This is where the quadrilateral securi-ty dialogue becomes relevant. Thisarrangement is not against anyone. It’s anarrangement for democracy, peace andrule of law.

There are some concerns about slow-down in Indian economy. How do yousee it?It’s normal that market economies peri-odically go through rough patches. ButIndia’s growth has been consistent overthe last few decades. Over the last fiveyears, India has been the fastest growinglarge economy in the world. I am, there-fore, confident that whatever seasonalinterruptions there might be, India willovercome it.

So, you think it’s a seasonal interrup-tion...

Yes, it’s seasonal and not a structuralproblem.

Modi became Prime Minister with a lotof expectation to further rejuvenateIndian economy. But the ongoing eco-nomic crisis is dampening the overallmood. How do you see it?The job of the government is not topump the economy one day and slow theeconomy down the next day. It’s the jobof the business. The job of the govern-

ment is to get the fundamentals right. That means low and simple taxes, honestand transparent administration, clearand fair laws, a constant effort to pro-duce good education and infrastructuresystem. In all this, the Modi governmenthas been doing a good job.

Why do you think the quadrilateralcoalition between India, the UnitedStates, Japan and Australia is impor-tant?

Because these four countries are themost significant and strong democraciesin the world. India is the world’s largestdemocracy and one of the most resilientones as well. The United States is still thecountry towards which the world looksat first and foremost for help. Japan hasbeen an exemplary international citizen. And Australia is one of the world’s oldestdemocracies, if universal and female suf-frage is to be taken into account. Themore these countries work together, themore this world would be free andpeaceful.

Many see it as an anti-China coalition. But Australia has close ties with China. How do you explain this supposed con-tradiction?Of course, we have a strong economicrelationship with China, which is our sin-gle biggest trading partner. But it makessense to have a strong economic relation-ship with China, and vibrant security tieswith the United States and stronger part-nership with India and Japan.

There are fears that once the US forcesleave Afghanistan, the Taliban mightmake a comeback. Do these apprehen-sions bother you as well?

I think these fears are quite justified. That’s why the US forces must not leaveAfghanistan. President Donald Trump isvery keen to end America’s wars, whichis understandable. America has paid avery high price to be the global guaran-tor of peace and security in the last sevendecades. I think it’s time for other coun-tries to do more. America can’t beexpected to bear all the burdens of thisvital task. At the same time, Afghanistancan’t be allowed to once again becomethe haven of terrorism. I believe theAfghanistan government will need inter-national support and that’s why the USforces should remain in Afghanistan. India has taken a strong positionagainst Pakistan on the issue of terror-ism. How do you see this? When I was the Prime Minister ofAustralia, I had interactions with thethen Pakistani Prime Minister, NawazSharif. I have no doubt that Sharif wasjust as concerned to stamp out terrorismas the rest of us. But the problem is thereare elements in the Pakistani securityapparatus that appear to think that thereare good Taliban and bad Taliban, andthat some Islamist extremists could be

tolerated. I think it’s very difficult tomake this kind of distinction. If you tryto ride a tiger, you could end up gettingmauled. I think the main challenge is tobe bring the Pakistani Army under anappropriate civilian control. But it shouldbe done wisely so that it doesn’t createany repercussion.

When you were the Prime Minister ofAustralia, you signed a nuclear dealwith India. What was the idea behindthat? It was the Howard government, before2007, which had first agreed for anarrangement with India on the issue, butit was abrogated by the next governmentin 2009, which was a big mistake.Despite that setback, Australia’s relation-ship with India remained cordial, butIndians were rightly disappointed withthe abrupt scrapping of the arrangement.I always believed that India was the rightcountry to get uranium from Australia. Why should India be barred when lessbenevolent nations were given thatopportunity? I am happy that we are nowexporting uranium to India.

Do you think energy is the big thingthat would bind the economies of Indiaand Australia?Absolutely. It’s impossible to bring peoplefrom the Third World into the middleclass without a massive increase in theper capita energy. As you move from rel-ative poverty to relative prosperity, yourper capita energy improves and increas-es. This is where Australia can be helpful. We have the largest readily availablereserve of coal, gas and uranium. I wantAustralia to be the source of energy secu-rity to India. I think that is an integralpart of India moving its millions of rela-tively poor people into the middle classand take its rightful place in the comityof great nations.

There are many roadblocks in India’sendeavour to be a permanent memberof the UN Security Council. What’syour stand? It’s always difficult to change a stand. Thesystem in place we have today is theimmediate byproduct of World War II. Inthose days the global position of Indiawas different. Today, if there’s one coun-try on the earth which by virtue of itssize, strength and potential has a claimover a position in the Security it would beIndia. Personally, I would be very sup-portive of India entering the UNSC. Indiawould be another democratic superpowerin the Security Council. The world wouldbe a better place if there are two democ-ratic superpowers, not just one.

What’s the message you have for thosewho want to invest in Australia?I would say that they shouldn’t look atthe controversy surrounding Adani tomake any negative assessment aboutinvesting in Australia. The people ofAustralia have very strong and naturalaffinity for the people of India. India hasone million ambassadors in Australia inthe shape of Indian diaspora, whichgrowing by the day. So, there is enoughgoodwill for India and Indians inAustralia. Which makes Indian invest-ment in Australia easier and profitable. This is where I get back to the free tradedeal which I and PM Modi in 2014 hadcommitted to implementing within 12months. Unfortunately it got derailed butlet’s hope it comes back on the agendawhen Morrison visits India early nextyear.

INDIA DESERVESTO BBE IIN SSECURITY CCOUNCIL: TTONY AABBOTTFormer Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has strongly supported India’s bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, saying that underthe leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country had moved from “underselling and underperforming” on the global stage. “India has always beena colossus of a subcontinent, but it hasn’t always been active globally. With Modi as Prime Minister, it has found its voice again. I think that’s going to be goodfor India and the world,” says Abbott. Taking his argument forward, the former Australian Prime Minister added, “Today, if there is one country on the earthwhich by virtue of its size, strength and potential has a claim over a position in the Security, it would be India. Personally, I would be very supportive of Indiaentering the UNSC. India would be another democratic superpower in the Security Council. The world would be a better place if there are two democraticsuperpowers, not just one.” In a free-wheeling interaction with SANJANA MOHAN during his recent visit to New Delhi, Abbott also touched upon his personalrapport with PM Modi, how free trade deal between India and Australia is a win-win scenario for both countries, why the US should not leave Afghanistan ina hurry, and how the economic slowdown being witnessed in India is a seasonal interruption rather than structural. Russian territory. Themove, reported by BBCNews, is the latest exampleof Apple kowtowing to agovernment’s demands tokeep its devices and ser-vices in good standing. The company faced signifi-cant criticism in Octoberfor removing theTaiwanese flag emoji fromthe iOS keyboard in HongKong. This latest changestems from Russia’s round-ly condemned annexationof Crimea in 2014. It onlyapplies when Crimea isviewed or searched forwith Apple Maps insideRussia; elsewhere in theworld, Crimea isn’t labeledas Russian territory.

BBC News says that

Apple had been in talkswith Russia for “severalmonths” about this topic, and apparently, it was hop-ing to leave Crimea asbeing in undefined territo-ry. But apparently, thatapproach didn’t satisfyRussia. “Crimea andSevastopol now appear onApple devices as Russianterritory,” the State Dumasaid in a statement postedto its website, referring toCrimea’s former listing asan “inaccuracy” that was“finally removed”. As aresult of the change, AppleMaps and Weather arenow “in compliance withthe requirements of theRussian legislation”. TheVerge has asked Apple forcomment on the situation.

Apple CEO Tim Cookhas routinely defendedApple’s policy of adheringto regulations in all coun-tries where it operates.

ber Technologies and itsrivals disrupted globaltransport, riding on a lackof regulation to driveexponential growth. Now,regulators are closing in.

London’s transport authoritybanned Uber for a second timeon Monday, citing concernsabout customer safety after vul-nerabilities in the app let driversfake their identities in thousandsof rides, as reported bygadgets.ndtv.

The decision shows that reg-ulatory scrutiny of passengersafety is intensifying —adding a new front in a glob-al crackdown that hadfocused on drivers’ rights.Uber isn’t just drawing ire

in Europe. It faces prob-lems related to sexual

assault and a fatalroadside incident

involving a self-dri-ving car in the US

Rival Lyft is under pressure inSan Francisco in sexual assaultcases and Didi is under fire fromregulators in China over its safe-ty record.

The deepening pressure hits atthe core of the business model ofride-hailing companies, whichoften operate at a loss as theyundercut traditional taxi servicesto win users and aggressivelyexpand into new markets. Thatmakes them particularly vulner-able to increased costs associatedwith new regulations. And that'sspooking investors.

Uber shares have dropped34% since it listed in May. RivalLyft is also down about 32%since its March initial publicoffering.

“The horror show of bad newssince its IPO continues forUber,” wrote Wedbush Securitiesanalysts Ygal Arounian andDaniel Ives in New York.

For Uber, the loss of its licensein London puts one of its

biggest markets outsideof the U.S at risk.

While Ubersaid it hadcaught the vulner-ability in its systemand patched it, theregulator wasn't con-vinced. One of the driversimplicated had his license sus-pended after he was caught ped-dling indecent images of chil-dren, a spokesman for Transportfor London said.

Passenger safety has long beena contentious issue for ride-hail-ing startups. Chinese giant DidiChuxing came under scrutiny inMay 2018, when state mediareported a driver used hisfather's account to pick up andkill a woman in the centralChinese city of Zhengzhou. In2014, an Uber driver in Indiatook a woman to an isolated areaand raped her, a Delhi courtfound. A woman in the US saidshe was raped last year after shegot into a car with an Uberdecal and was driven toa secluded

loca-tion andattacked. Uber beat backher lawsuit, but the judgesuggested in her rulingthis month that thecompany is openingitself to trouble if itallows its decals toremain on vehi-cles belongingto dangerousdrivers.

n Australianfilmmaker hasdelivered thedefinitive mani-festo on what

must surely rank as one ofIndia’s most tragic carnagesin history and, come tothink, that should be asobering thought forBollywood.

In the 11 years that havepassed since the Mumbaiattacks, the Hindi film

industry hasapproached

the subjectonly once —

with Ram GopalVarma’s 2013

effort, TheAttacks Of

26/11. Butthen,Varma

has alwaysbeen a

Bollywood non-conformist, and his

film seemed too much like adocumentary for impact.

Anthony Maras’ HotelMumbai chooses to be aslow-burn suspense dramarather than a freneticthriller. Setting aside thesocio-politics of the tragedyand its aftermath, the filmsolely focuses on taking usright into the plush TajMahal Palace hotel in

Mumbai’s Colaba area, through the fateful nightthat culminated the heinous26/11 massacres in Mumbai.

In structure and spirit,Hotel Mumbai could remindyou of contemporary filmson terror attacks such asUnited 93, World TradeCenter and Munich. It isabout the cold suspense thatis evoked watching inno-cents trapped in a situationborne out of terror attack.Maras and his co-screen-writer John Collee act aschroniclers of the tragedywith an effective impartialeye, letting incidents on thescreen do the talking ratherthan use loud backgroundscore or dramatic camera-work.

The film wastes no timein getting into actual inci-dents. We see the handful ofLashkar-e-Taiba gunmen, barely out of their teens, arrive in Mumbai by a boat.Soon, they disperse to vari-ous locations, as instructed.Beginning with ChhatrapatiShivaji Terminus, they thenspread mayhem across targetareas including LeopoldCafe and the Oberoi-Tridenthotel before getting down tothe real operation - theannihilation of Taj hotel andits super-VIP guest list.

Hotel Mumbai balancesfact and fiction well, to cre-ate a cohesive whole.Anupam Kher, for instances, plays renowned chef HemantOberoi but Dev Patel’s ever-helpful waiter Arjun Singhbears a slice of imagination.

As they roam the corri-dors of the hotel looking forvictims to gun down, thevulnerable side of the youngterrorists gets exposed, too.It is revealed how these boyswere just an ignorant andilliterate bunch driven by thepromise of jannat’ at the endof their suicidal mission.

The film banks on the tri-umph of the underdog spirit.Unlike most films of thegenre, the real heroes hereare not the specially-trainedoperatives (who arrive fromDelhi in choppers hourslater, as the film is ends), andnot even the valiant but ill-prepared policemen whotook substantial risk inbringing down some of theterror squad. The heroes ofthe film are the commonpeople — the guests trappedin the hotel. This is not a res-cue thriller, it is subtly-craft-ed drama meant to celebratehope and resilience.

As a taut narrative ofaround 125 minutes playsitself out, Hotel Mumbai vir-tually takes you into thosecorridors, with those hotelguests. Smart cinematogra-phy (Nick Remy Matthews)and editing (Peter McNulty)create scope for such animpact.

The simplified storytellingopens up space for naturalacting. Dev Patel andAnupam Kher are sturdyperformers as ever. ArmieHammer and NazaninBoniadi, as a couple whosenewborn child is strandedupstairs with the nanny(Tilda Cobham-Hervey)when the attacks start, areaptly cast, as are the green-horn actors essaying the ter-rorists. Amandeep Singh andSuhail Nayyar as two key ter-rorists, Imran and Abdullah, are particularly impressive.

Hotel Mumbai tells anextraordinary story in adown-to-earth manner. Itdoes justice to the facts itchooses to portray, andweaves in the fiction withoutdisturbing the facts.

t is not easy to sitthrough 209 min-utes of this mag-nificent mobster-piece. After all, wedon’t love mob-

sters as much as MartinScorcese, who has had a life-long passion for the trigger-happy outcasts who, for rea-sons of perverse pride andhonour and subverted mas-culinity, love to shoot theirvictims in the face.

In the face of it, TheIrishman is Scorcese’s finalfarewell to those immigranthitmen who ruled suburbanAmerica in the 1950s. It is afabulous farewell, seethingwith an unexpressed rage, brimming over with thedirector’s love for his out-lawed characters and theirfamily affairs, all arranged ina spiral that threatens to tum-ble down in a rush anymoment but miraculouslymanages to stay in place.

The Irishman is not onlyScorcese’s longest film, it isalso his most verbose andemotional mobster movies. The last half an hour is in factamongst the most brilliantportrayals of loneliness andapproaching death that I’veseen in cinema. De Niroexcels as a man who, after alifelong liaison with violence, craves for his estrangedyoungest daughter to forgivehim.

As the daughter Peggy, thebrilliant child actress LucyGallina’s accusing eyes fol-lows De Niro and the blood-drenched narrative, to theirnemesis. In an epic film —and let it be known that thisis an epic work of splatteredart in the truest sense —chockful of accomplishedperformances, little Lucy

Gallina’s Peggy becomes themoral compass that weighsthe monstrous misdeeds ofher father and his two associ-ates, played with oscillatingbrilliance by Joe Pesci and AlPacino. These are two of themost brilliant Americanactors of all times whom wehaven’t seen in a while. To seethem get together with GodOf Histrionics De Niro is anexperience of a lifetime.

We never feel the collectiveweight of their reputation.Scorsese uses this iconic triostrictly as characters. Thesocio-political dynamics ofthe 1960s and 70s are appliedto the lives of this trio ofmobsters with telling ferocity. The narrative lumbers for-ward at a pace that today’sgeneration of Scorsese follow-ers would find challenging. The Irishman is a very wordyfilm. There are long passagesof conversation where thecharacters discuss violenceand corruption so casually ,we need to focus on theunstated punctuationsbetween the lines to seewhere these heroes are head-ing to, and at what cost.

Finally to me, the brillianceof The Irishman is incum-bent on the profound rela-tionship between violenceand self-worth that the plotaccentuates through the char-acters’ aging passages. CGsknock off 40 years from DeNiro, Pacino and Pesci. Butthe process is not an exercisein bravura. As we see thesemen plod violently fromamoral middleage to theirwinter of discontent, a wholeethos of the curdledAmerican Dream passes byin front of our eyes.

The Irishman is not justgreat film for the perfor-

mances(watch outfor the little-knownactress MarinIreland as DeNiro’s eldestdaughter inthe onesequencewhere shescoffs at her dad’sjustification for beingsuch a brutal household-er), its keen eye for perioddetail(truly the Devil lies inthe details) and its severelyaustere soundtrack , but alsobecause like Scorcese’s bestfilms on mob blood likeMean Streets and Good Fellas,The Irishman shows us theultimate nullity of men whoswear by violence.

A pity, it takes so much

bloodshed to getthere. But the vio-lent journey is worth everybit our time and patience.Wemay not love mobsters asmuch as Martin Scorsese. Butwe surely cannot help plung-ing deep into the lives ofthese uprooted sophisticatedsociopaths who stop at noth-ing. And that’s where it endsfor them.

ARJUN SURAVARAM:WHERE LOGIC GOES FOR A TOSSK RAMYA SREE n HYDERABAD

ikhil Sidhartha’smuch awaited anddelayed ArjunSuravaram hasfinally seen thelight of day as it

hit screens on Friday. Based on the remake of

Tamil hit Kanithan, this filmrevolves around an inves-tigative journalist ArjunLenin Suravaram played byNikhil, who gets arrested forcheating banks with fakecertificates.

The actor discovers acrime syndicate behind thescam and decides to investi-gate it himself.

Arjun’s father, played byNagineedu, is also a journal-ist and asks his son to notget into this field as he feelsjournalism has died longback and there is no spacefor truth in this country.Arjun, however, lies to hisfather and joins a local newschannel after gettinginspired by his dad, grandfa-ther and great grandfather, who were all journalists.

Arjun is an investigativereporter who is sociallyresponsible. He wants tobring about change in thesociety through his journal-ism rather than bringingTRPs to channels.

The BBC aspirant’s careertakes a U-turn when he getsarrested in an education loanscam. After securing bail, hediscovers that a huge mafiais responsible for the scamand feels he is the one whoshould expose the mafiakingpin to the public.

While the film definitelyhas a social message and the first half keeps yougripped, the second half is adrab that puts one to sleep bybecoming extremely pre-dictable. The tried and testedscreenplay and the routinehero-villian drama gets bor-ing even though Arjun is seencollecting evidence againstthe scamsters all by himself.

The direction and screen-

play was not put well togetherand raises a million questions.

In one scene, the mafiakidnaps his lawyer friend(played by Vennela Kishore)from Old City. Throwinglogic to toss, Arjun is seenrunning behind the van tosave his friend. Forgetinforming the police, hecould have at least triedaccessing the CCTV footageto trace the kingpin or getsome clues. They show thehighhandedness of a higherofficial in the film and showthat Arjun gets vary of allofficials due to him. But, ishe the only officer? Arethere no loyal officers whomArjun could’ve sought helpfrom?

The film looks like abunch of unnecessary fights, songs, an unnecessary lovetrack, interspersed withdumb logic and impracticalscenes.

Lavanya Tripati playsKavya, a journalism gradu-ate and daughter of the CEOof the channel Arjun worksfor. She helps Arjun bust thescam. Her role could havebeen much more stronger, but she just ended up beinga love interest of the herowithout whom the moviewouldn’t have missed much. She doesn’t given get herclothes right. She wears anethnic Anarkhali dress withbunch of jewellery whenthey go on a sting operationto get some crucial evidencefrom the Kingpin’s adda. Shefelt like an unnecessary char-acter in the melee of things.

The film turned too dra-matic when they pictured a10-minute school wall col-lapse scene killing childrenand a 5-minute dramabefore a falsely accused soft-ware employee jumps to hisdeath, leaving his mombreaking down in a hospitalas her husband waits for theson’s money to fund hisbypass surgery, making onequestion “Why!?”.

Posani definitely gets around of applause for hisemotional character unlike

his regular comic roles. He plays the role of a con-

stable, father ofVennela Kishorewho is also thebest friend ofNagineedu. His deathandVennela’sperformancedefinitely leavesone teary eyed.

Songs too were adrab in the film with aroutine introductionsong and a love duetbetween the hero-heroinewhich was not in sync with the ongoing

storyline.

polar opposites andtheir ensuing argu-

ments form theonly drama that

drives the film.

While the hero doesn’t knowhow to talk to a girl, hisfriends don’t care how theytalk to women. While onetries to win over people bybeing nice to them, the othertwo go to the extent of kid-napping a would-be suitor ofRani and enacting a hit-and-run of Rani’s father to helpRaja.

The chemistry betweenthe three is solid and doesmanage to evoke comedy, especially in the beginning, but, by themselves, their act-ing falls apart. Also, am Iimagining it or has itbecome mandatory to have atracking shot of the heroangrily riding a bike, eversince Arjun Reddy?

Sorry, there is nothingmuch that can be said aboutthe leading lady (RahasyaGorak), because the direc-tor also doesn’t tell us muchabout her. This is truebecause it is never evenrevealed in the film whereRani goes to study her inte-grated engineering course, much to the frustration ofRaja, his friends, and theaudience. It does make wayfor some comedy though, even briefly. Even thoughRani has two others friends, just like Raja, we never getto know what they discuss. The movie comes from amale perspective, listing outone problem after the otherthat men face in buildingrelationships, while relegat-ing Rani’s role to being apretty doll whose script iseasier to by-heart.

Rani, at the end of theday, is only an object of amale gaze that wants tokeep women as simple aspossible, no ambitions orgrey areas in their lives withtheir only aim being a duti-ful daughter.

The director Ravi KiranKola in an interview withThe Pioneer said that hischoice of shooting in a pic-turesque village in Godavaridistrict is his inspiration hefound in Malayalam movies. He stands true to his word.He keeps his camera on wide

angle, constantly movingalong with the actors and thesurroundings.

He skillfully manages tocapture the beautiful greentones of an Andhra Pradeshvillage, highlighted by thebluish tones of monsoonthat Ravi Kiran Kola waitedpatiently to capture on cellu-loid.

But, that is the limit towhich the village was used. There is a scene where thecharacters had a chance totake the audience on the bul-lock cart ride but choose touse bikes instead. Why?

There are many suchmissed opportunities in thefilm. A proper exploration ofcoming-of-age in a villageand the problems that comewith it. And, there is a scenewhere a character from thecity makes fun of Godavariaccent. While the pride inbeing a Naidu or a Chow-dhury is stressed, the accentdifferences between TS andAP are left unexplored.

Just like the camera, themovie’s score, by Jay Krish, too, doesn’t let you keepstill. Right from the get go,the peace and tranquillityof a village, that the noisycity folk yearn for, is deniedto them as the backgroundscore (and the multiplesongs that come after every20 minutes or so) blastthrough the speakers leav-ing not a moment of peace.

The screenplay lags asmuch as much as the hero’sattempts to express love. Ifthis movie was a stand-upshow, it just teases the audi-ence by setting up jokes andnever giving the punch-lines. Raja Vaaru RaniGaaru is just a series ofscenes where Raja tries toexpress his love to Rani butfails to do so. Does he trysomething new? No, hedoesn’t.

tarot 11FOR ME, COMPATIBILITY IS ASENSE OF HUMOUR, BEINGABLE TO LAUGH TOGETHER;THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT

— FELICITY KENDAL Hyderabad, December 1, 2019

Parents of a young girl, keen to gether married soon, after lot of searchpinned down on a guy, the type

they were looking for. Preliminary astro-logical match was found good. For finalcheck, they went to their familyastrologer, who rejected the choice out-right. When asked for the reasons, theastrologer put a question mark on theirmarital stability based on some astrologi-cal pointers. In desperation, they consult-ed many other astrologers. All of themapproved the match. But they could notignore their family astrologer, whomthey trusted the most. In a state of utterconfusion, they sought my opinion.

When I agreed with his familyastrologer, giving details of the astrologi-cal pointers on which, he had rejectedthe choice, they asked: “Is your opinionbased on the same factors? And howcomes other astrologers gave their con-sent? My other worry is that my daugh-ter’s marriage is getting delayed. Whendo you think is it likely to happen?Kindly suggest some remedial measureto expedite the marriage.”

Other astrologers just looked at thetraditional matching score, which beinggood, they agreed. But let me make itclear that traditional matching countmethod just offers a prima-facie view, which is based on the law of average

applied on placement of Moon in thetwo charts. It is my personal experiencethat despite scoring even 34 counts outof a total of 36, lot of marriages havefailed. So traditional matching by itselfdoesn’t offer a true picture. For, it doesn’toffer any light on personality traits of thetwo prospective partners, which we can’tafford to ignore.

Your family astrologer got into finerdetails of the two charts before he offeredhis opinion, and so his viewpoint seemsbetter reasoned. In so far as my opinion isconcerned, it is not based just on theastrological pointers your familyastrologers looked at. I count more onpersonality matching of the prospectivepartners. Remember, what is more impor-tant in marital relationship is how the twowould engage with each other, thepremise for which is set by the inherenthabits and tendencies of the two. Once thepartners settle down in marriage, the twobegin taking each other for granted, whentheir inherent trends come out in open, and with obvious consequences.

It is not worth looking for a remedialmeasure to expedite the marriage. Ifthere are indications for delayed mar-riage in someone’s horoscope, it is pur-poseful. It offers time and space to workupon one’s habits and attitudes, but forwhich it will

be difficult to make the marriage workwith ease. Timely marriage is desirable. But more important is harmony and sta-bility. But rest assured, she may get mar-ried in a year’s time.

Look at the astrological pointers toyour daughter’s personality trends. She isborn in a fiery and movable sign Aries. That makes her headstrong, impulsive, aggressive, irritable, impatient and intol-erant. She is domineering, who wouldlike to be at the head of things and detestplaying second fiddle to any. Lagna lordMars is placed adverse to Uranus andNeptune. This, in the first place, makesher temperamental and erratic. Second, when faced with unpleasant situation, she may develop inferiority complex.More so, because the Sun is locked inadverse formation to its planet of neme-sis Saturn. It implies that she has a nega-tive mindset having a nagging tendency. She carries an indwelling sense of fearand insecurity, which makes her habitu-ally suspicious of others. Given a difficultsituation, self-pitying and pessimismmay overtake her mind’s drive.

Now coming to the prospective part-ner, Taurus lagna, read together with itslord Venus as well as mind signifyingMoon, both in fixed signs make him astubborn guy. Moon placed adverse toMars makes him temperamental, moody, and irritable. Moon, ill-disposed off to

Mercury makes him indecisive, resentfulof others, may lack focus, and carriesworrying tendency. Jupiter placedadverse to Mercury accounts for hisinsensible reasoning and judgment.Jupiter placed adverse to Mars speaks ofa swaggering ego, stuck to his precon-ceived beliefs and perceptions, not opento look beyond for a reality check. It willbe difficult for him to digest if eversomeone differs with his viewpoint. Ontop of that Mars is ill-disposed off toSaturn, which gives him bad temper, andbrings in revengeful tendency. If everprovoked he may go wild, when he maylose sense of reasons and order. You canyourself make out whether the two canstand each other for long.

HYDERABAD | SUNDAY | DECEMBER 01, 2019 hyderabad 12

was born in Nibola village inerstwhile Moradabad districtof Uttar Pradesh. I studied upto 7th class in village inHindi medium and thenmoved to Dehradun. One of

my close relative (phuphaji) NarayanSingh, frequented Dehradun forJhandevala mela, a festival of Punjabis. He had acquaintance with Guru RamRai who had a trust in the field of edu-cation. I went to Dehradun to witnessmela, when Guru asked me to go toschool. That brought change into mylife. Had I not gone to mela, going toDehradun from village was out ofquestion. My father Ram Gopal Singhwas into farming and not keen on high-er studies.I did Intermediate from DAVCollege in MPC. While being at DAV,I was staying alone in a hostel. I wasloyal, sincere, not missed classes andnever posed problems to others.

First lesson on punctuality in Class 8

In my school days in Dehradun, Iwent late to class in 8th class. Theteacher made me stand in corner fac-ing the wall. Then I decided that I willnot give this opportunity to teachers tofind fault with me. Either I will be ontime or I will not go. I can't afford notto miss on class. That self-imposed rulecontinues even now. Even to this day, Iam always on time for meetings.Sometimes I am 10 minutes ahead oftime and people ask me, why are you soearly. Instead of being at my office, Imight as well be here few minutes beforebut not late. My way of life is to be ontime. The principles which start at earlyage become part and parcel of your life.

Backbencher, yet topperIn my school at Dehradun I came in

second position. I never sat on frontseats but was always last-bencher. Frombackside you have freedom - if teach-ing is good you can concentrate and ifit is not, you can relax. In front bench-es, you always have to be attentive.Learning can be done irrespective ofseating. In few subjects, though I stud-ied in Hindi medium till 7th StandardI used to come first, surprising every-one. Once in a monthly test, principalcame and said there is surprise result. There was always 2-3students who sitin first bench are always toppers.Principal said the person sitting in backbench was topper. It gave me motiva-tion that I can do, irrespective of being

away from familyand home. In

Intermediate, I picked MPC and I wastopper among 1200 students.

Repairing things at homeI wanted to be in engineering and not

medicine as I had lot of liking for tech-nology. Repairing minor things at myhouse, I enjoyed to do it. Even today, Irepair things, fan, microwave oveneverything on my own. In fact, recent-ly I repaired mosquito bat using my sol-dering kit.

I joined University of Rorkee (nowIIT) which was then only engineeringcollege and selected ElectricalEngineering based on options Ihad. That time, Engineers' maingoal was to get into railways. Iappeared for railway examand they took lot of time dur-ing which I joined IIT Delhi.I joined IIT-Delhi for mas-ters in power systems butthen I got job in NTPC. Inthe meantime, I got job inrailways, and left NTPC andjoined railways. I did onlyfoundation course and thetraining was in Vadodra andBombay.

Backed off as studentleader due to caste

In my family only my name is SureshChanda while everyone in my family

goes by 'Singh'. I had a teacher BalChand. He told my father, 'you gave

him Suresh as name and I'll putChand and that continued'.

In village, we don't writesurname and just like

that he put his name. It is useful for me,in engineering college, nobody knowsabout my caste. During my graduationin Roorkee, I contested in the electionfor mess counsellors which was man-aged by students. Some people wantedto find out my caste. When they figuredthat I belong to a particular communi-ty and some of them told me that thecommunity people would vote for me,I said no to contest. If you want me asa person, I will contest but not based on

communitye q u a -

tions.T h a t

community wasvery strong in that area and it was a bignumber in the hostel.

Railways interviewimproved thought

During Railways foundation course

training in Vadodra, interview markshave impact on your seniority also. Theyasked for technical questions and onequestion, I said I don't know. The inter-viewer said the option can be yes or no,you can take a chance and get bettermarks. My stance was clear that 'I don'tknow, it's a fact and I can't take chance'.I got highest marks in the interview. They appreciated that despite beingaware of the impact of interview, theperson chose not to take a chance. Thisincident further strengthened mythought of being on the path of right-eousness. If you don't get anythingbecause you don't deserve, it is ok. Don'ttry for it using wrong means.

Tie up with bus fornewspaper

I had no idea of getting into IAS. Myrelative was studying to get into IAS whoinfluenced me to write the exam. He gotinto Customs Department at that time.I cleared prelim exam in my firstattempt without preparation, whichgave me con-fidence. Idecided totake sometime to studyand took 3m o n t h sbreak. I cameback to myvillage tostudy. I usedto get news-paper from15km. I had atie up with abus, whichwould drop offthe newspaperabout 1.5kmaway from myvillage at a tea shop near junction. I usedto get two newspapers around 5 pm inevening. I would send one person topick up the newspaper as I have to studyduring day time as there was no powerin the night. My entire preparation forIAS was in my village without anyone'said.

Was locked out oninterview day

I was in Mathura, as we were doingelectrification from Delhi to Mumbai.I was living in Mathura guest houseand train was at 6am to Delhi whileinterview was at 11am. When Iwoke up I found the door to belocked by the servant. There was nophone then and I was banging door

and making sounds asking people toopen the door. After long time, some-

one came and I just reached on time tocatch the train. About the UPSC inter-view, I had a plan in my mind that inter-view will go in certain way and it hap-pened in exactly same way. There alsothey asked me question which I didn'tknow and recalling the railway incidentI replied I don't know. I got highestmarks in interview in that year whichhelped me get into IAS.

Automation in rolesMy first posting was Sub-Collector in

Kandukuru but my favorite posting,

with significant contribution, wasCommercial Taxes Department thatlasted for about 3.5 years. I was thirdlongest serving IAS in the posting. Myconcept is fairness and transparency andmaking things easy for public using

technology. In 2010 we madeall returns online for pay-ments and registrationsonline. Even recently oneperson thanked me for mak-ing orders online eliminat-ing middlemen. Anotherbig initiative is putting GOson to website. I was inAPTS and made all govern-ment orders online andavailable to public. In 2008we started the system. Thisgives me lot of satisfaction.Mobile e-clinics for treat-ment of animals in tenureas Animal HusbandaryDepartment was anotherinitiative which gave mesatisfaction.

Transfers a normI had large number of transfers.

Except for commercial taxes and APTS,none of my postings lasted for more thana year and half. Transfers and postingsare normal. Once in Hyderabad, yourhouse remains same but the office loca-tion changes. But when you are in dis-tricts it is different. Upto seventh class,my son did each class in two differentplaces. I went for PG in Managementin a university in US in 2003 for one year.It is linked with governance and Mastersin Public Administration in Maxwellschool. People said that I am strict. ButI say it is law abiding and fair - natural-ly I will have more transfers. I chose thispath and will face consequences, I can'tcomplain.

Climate consciousI read technical books and keep

myself update with technologicaladvancements. I put solar roof top onmy home almost 15years ago. Myhouse has only LED lights and BLDCfans which are very efficient. It is mylove for technology and it is economi-cally viable, reduces unnecessary expen-diture. Whatever new advancementscome out, I would like to try them. Inmy previous role, I made all my depart-ment offices switch to solar powerwhich consume 300units less. Usingsolar power you are doing service tonation.
