VISION STATEMENT Pompallier Catholic College is a Marist community that challenges all students to excel in their endeavours.

We promote Christian values, learning excellence and quality relationships to enable students to be outstanding citizens.

The seventh Pompallier Hikoi concludes today. For seven years we have taken our Year 13 students to become one with the whenua and taonga of the first Catholic missionaries in New Zealand. We claim a special connection with this arrival, for it was Bishop Pompallier and members of the Marist fraternity who stepped ashore, late at night, on January 10th 1838. Our College is named after the Bishop and located in the lands where he first sowed the seeds of the Catholic faith. And it was the Society of Mary who first staffed our College and guided its development for almost 40 years. These are treasures that we hold dear. It is our heritage and gives shape to who we are today and how we relate to the community around us.

As I watched, on Tuesday, the Year 13 students pack their bags onto the buses, I wondered what the first missionaries brought to this land so far from their home of Lyon in France. What would they consider to be essential travel items? Given the size of ships they travelled in, it was very likely that they had less luggage per person than most of our students who would be away for only three days! What would I have packed if I were one of these early Marists? The thought challenged me to consider what I hold to be essential in my life. Would I be able to fit the essentials into a few suitcases?

An answer was before me last Saturday as I attended the funeral of my Aunty Patricia. She was blessed with an amazing intellect that only a few have, but she also suffered from a history of mental illness and found it difficult to find regular employment. She had been subjected to electric shock therapy as part of her treatment and had to live with the impact of polio. She never married and in many ways was an innocent lady subjected to the good intentions of that time.

All that she physically possessed could fit into a room which was 3x4 meters. It took me less than 1 hour to sort all her life possessions. Central to what she treasured were the photographs of her nieces and nephews and their children, all thirty eight of them. She could recall all their birthdays and wrote to them on a regular basis. Family was everything to her. Her treasure and essentials were he tangata, he tangata, he tangata. How many suitcases would I need for that?

Also, just a reminder that if you are making payments by internet banking, please make sure that you use the student’s name and their ID No. (shown on the statement) as a reference, to ensure your payment is allocated correctly. These people all helped make the day run well - despite the weather! Congratulations to Ciara Smith who broke her last years record in the 50m Breaststroke Intermediate Girls race with her time of 36.65 (37.00 in 2015). Some of the students who swam in our College event will compete at the NSS Swim champs this week, or the WPSSA Swim champs on Tuesday 8 March. Any Year 7 & 8 swimmers who qualify for this event will be sent home with a permission slip (also emailed to families). Please return the signed permission promptly if you wish your child to compete ☺

POMPALLIER SPORTS TEAMS - CAN YOU HELP? After a successful Orientation event, where students signed up their interest in Sports and College clubs, we are in need of many Coaches and Team Managers to help make it happen for these keen sports people! We need Coaches for: Basketball – Girls and Boys Collegiate team and Year 7 & 8 team. Netball – Intermediate teams and a Collegiate team. Rugby – A mixture of ages – nine Year 9 & 10 aged boys and six Year 11 - 13 boys that could enter the Open mid-week competition next term – CAN YOU COACH/MANAGE THEM? Or we could arrange games for a Pompallier U15 team instead of playing in a weekly competition. We have only five Year 7 & 8’s signed up so far – we want 12 players for our annual school exchanges in Term two, or possibly if there is interest, in the AIMS tournament.

NETBALL TRIALS All team trials are being held at our netball courts after-school, and players must wear appropriate footwear and training clothes. A Code of Conduct will be issued for players and parents to read and a fees newsletter will

go out once teams are selected. Trial Dates: Collegiate: Second trial - Monday 29 February 3.30 - 4.00pm (approx.) Intermediate: Wednesday 2 March 3.30 - 5.00pm All players should have thought carefully about their ability to commit to training one day a week, and games every Saturday, through Term 2 & 3. Our Collegiate Team 1 may attend the Upper North Island National tournament in Auckland, for which planning and fundraising will be done by players and their families, with support from the Sports Department. They also play in the Marcellin College annual sports exchange (this year it is held at Pompallier). We need a Collegiate Coach and some Coaches for the Intermediate teams too, so if you can help please contact me at school.

HOCKEY TRIALS, YEARS 7 - 13 Our Pompallier Hockey trials are on Friday 26 February at 6.30pm, at the Northland Hockey Centre, Kensington. Everyone is welcome from Year 7 through to Year 13. The Year 7 & 8 players will trial for the Marist Club at the same time. NSS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPS - Thursday 17 March Each year we take athletes to compete at this event, which is held at Kensington Park, and we are required to provide an Official. This year there is an on-line training tool that needs to be completed to up-skill all helpers. If you are interested in attending with our school team as an Official, please contact me by email.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS Gabi Telfer competed in the Showcase National Dance Championships at Jupiter’s Casino on the Gold Coast in January this year. She competed in the Ruby section for her solo dances and was placed first for her Broadway Jazz dance, third for her Jazz dance and she placed in the Top 10 Ruby soloists for the whole competition (there is over 1500 competitors). She also competed with WADPA (Whangarei Academy of Dance & Performing Arts) in numerous other group dances that received a number of gold and high gold awards. Well done Gabi! Madison Brooke and her rowing partner attended the Bankstream NZ Rowing Champs at Lake Karapiro last week. They won the Womens Novice Double Skulls final - so they are NZ Champions. Awesome work Madison!

BASKETBALL / INTER-BALL We had lots of Year 7 & 8 students sign-up as interested in playing this year, however as yet we do not have a Coach or team manager. Is there a parent or senior student who has the skills to take training once a week, and attend the games each Wednesday afternoon from 5.00 - 6.15pm? Please contact me for more information. The season has started already but we could join in later if we can get a team organised ☺ MAUNU HOCKEY REGISTRATION & OPEN TRIAL FOR YEAR 7 & 8 PLAYERS Thursday 3 March 4.00 – 6.00pm at Whangarei Intermediate School on the turf. Registration, fitness assessment and trial. Bring hockey gear – don’t forget mouth guard. Rain or shine! Possible second trial on Thursday 10 March (TBC).

CIRCUS SKILLS CLASSES Have you ever wanted to learn how to juggle, spin plates, hula hoop, diabolo, acrobatics, poi and lots more fun circus activities? Then come along to our beginner Circus classes hosted by Circus Kumarani. Every Monday starting 29 February, from 4.00 - 5.30pm our Youth Class for 9yr - 18yr olds, followed by our Adult Class from 6.00 - 7.00pm. Every Wednesday starting 2 March, from 4.00 - 5.30pm for 5yr - 8yr olds, followed by our Adult Class from 6.00 -7.00pm. Classes are held at the Anglican hall (opp the Anglican Church) 2a Kamo Rd, Regent, in school term days only. Concession card available 10 classes for $100, or casual rate $15 a class. There is also a Circus Jam every Tuesday night at the Company of the Giants, 116a Bank St (opposite White Cross), 4.00 - 6.00pm for children under 13yrs old, and 7.00 - 9.00pm for anyone 13yrs and older. Just a Koha per person. Please note that the circus jams are not classes but a time to practice and have a play. STREET DANCE & SAMOAN CULTURE DANCE WORKSHOP

BUS PASSES ... All students have been issued with their Student ID/Buss pass. If your child loses their pass, they can apply for a replacement by paying $6.00 to the College office. A temporary pass will be issued, and a new one will be ordered for them. As these are printed off-site, this can take a couple of days.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS ... On Thursday 11th February we had a very successful meet and greet BBQ at school, by the pool, for our International Students and their home stay families. It was a most enjoyable evening; the weather was lovely and it was an ideal opportunity for everyone to get together. At present we have 14 students enrolled at Pompalllier. This would not be possible without the wonderful support and commitment from our home stay families. We are very lucky to have such dedicated families in our community. Thank you all so much and keep up the good work.
