President’s Message
Prior to Sandra's mother and then her father's recent death, she spent years taking
care of both. We have booked a European cruise in 2014 after no vacations in a long
time. As the BRNA president, I feel like the captain of a cruise ship and relate to all of
the responsibility that goes along with the position. Our ship {NW GA TRADE &
CONVENTION CENTER} is modern, clean, spacious and well maintained. The
ship’s officers, assistants, directors, and maintenance personnel (BRNA OFFICERS,
BOARD AND APPOINTEES} must be committed, dedicated, qualified people
working hard for everyone to enjoy the trip {CONVENTION}. Even with the best
intentions and planning a storm could cross our path {THE ECONOMY or SEVERE
STORMS} and proper actions have to take place. Safety and security on board the
ship {SECURITY} should be a top priority ad is by offering security prior to, during,
and departure. During the cruise you enjoy fine dining {REFRESHMENTS AND
QUALITY CONCESSION FOOD} and entertainment {EXHIBITS, SEMINARS,
and YN PROGRAMS}. Cruise ships offer various room accommodations
(STRAIGHT OR CORNER DEALER TABLES} in different areas of the ship
(BOURSE FLOOR}. Lots of advertising and promotion precede every voyage
{BILLBOARDS, NEWSPAPERS, JOURNALS, and HANDOUTS}. At the end of
the cruise {CONVENTION} everyone will not be 100% satisfied due to their per-
sonal expectations and experiences {TABLE LOCATION, CUSTOMERS, and
REVENUES VS COST}. Negative results for even one passenger {DEALER OR
COLLECTOR}, no matter how small, provide the cruise line {BRNA} an opportu-
nity for oversight to review, correct and improve upon those aspects we have any con-
trol of. A warm on board "welcome" and a departing "thank you" go hand in hand.
Putting all aspects in perspective, the one word that would be a top priority is
QUALITY!
Recently a newspaper article stated: "The Twinkies cream-filled cakes many
Americans grew up snacking on made a comeback. The new owners promised the
spongy yellow cakes would taste just like people remember and will be remarkably
close to the original recipe, noting the first 3 ingredients are still enriched flour, water,
and sugar. The NEW Twinkies NOW list more than 25 ingredients with a shelf-life of
45 days, almost 3 weeks longer than the previous 26 days. That suggests the ingredi-
ents have been tinkered with since being created in 1930. When Twinkies first came
out they were made from fresh ingredients". I always wonder why a once successful
show does not exist today, and many are currently struggling?
The BRNA, chartered in 1960, was established and has had a QUALITY reputation
for years. It is this QUALITY I will endeavor to maintain for each and every conven-
tion. Sometimes change can be better or worse. BRNA may not be the largest or the
smallest, the cheapest or the most expensive, but we are and will be known for our
QUALITY. Anyone can claim to be the best, but everyone will experience the differ-
ence at each and every Annual BRNA Convention. I am committed to do my best for
every dealer and collector as president of the BRNA.
Sincerely, Grant Campbell
BRNA President

Editor’s Notes The summer is almost over with. It was a different one this year where
the weather kept a lot of areas cooling than normal. I know it Florida in the
month of June and July that it seem like it rained in the area almost daily.
That was followed by someone turning the faucet off for several weeks be-
fore we had any more rain.
By the time you receive this copy of the Journal the 54th BRNA Annual
Convention will be in the history books. Work has started on the 55th BRNA
Annual Convention for next year. Throughout this journal you will see some
of the photos that were taken of different events.
It seems in the market with the slow down of selling/buying precious
metals that the regular coin market has starting to pick up. Hopefully with the
fall and winter coming upon us soon that the coin market will stay strong.
As most of you know that one of the items that you need to continue to
be aware of is security. As you are going, coming from shows, club meetings
or just discussing the items in your collections or inventory be aware of your
surroundings. You never know who might be listening or following you to
your car or your home. It’s a great hobby that you are involved in but if we
are not careful then it can be very dangerous. Be careful at all times.

2013 BRNA Annual Convention
Blenda Brush & Ron Blackman, Co-Bourse Chair
The 2013 54th Annual BRNA Convention is now in the history books and work has begun for the 55th Annual BRNA Convention. The Convention Center started ar-ranging the tables on Tuesday and we started placing the covers on the tables Wednes-day morning. The next step was the dealer’s table signs placed in holders at the dealer’s table along with trash bags. These tasks consumed the complete Wednesday. Thankfully Ron and Sharon had the dealer badges placed in the plastic holders and thus the task began of placing these in alphabetical order in regards to full payment or partial payment. Thursday morning was just fine tuning the areas that were worked on Wednesday and the wait for the dealers to start arriving. There were some dealers that arrived early and then had to wait until opening time at 1PM for dealer’s setup. The activity was very brisk when the dealers were allowed into the bourse floor.
BRNA provided a security room for the dealers that started Wednesday afternoon and ended Thursday afternoon when the bourse was opened. There was a good portion of the dealers using the room this year and we hope to continue this for the future BRNA shows. This provided the dealers an opportunity, upon arriving to store their valuables and then have a chance to visit local restaurants in the area. Some of the local businesses that the dealers supported was Oakwood Restaurant, Dalton Depot, all of the motels in the area (to name a few, i.e., Hampton Inn, LaQuinta, Comfort Inn, etc.) Cracker Barrel, Chili’s, Miller’s Rib Shack and many more that wasn’t mention.
The Mayor of Dalton was available Friday morning for the ribbon cutting that opened the show to the public. Mayor David Pennington was not able to stay due to other commitments but BRNA was glad that he was able to attend even for a short while.
After the ribbon cutting, there was a line of people waiting to enter the convention and seem to have a very positive feeling about the show. We had 700 in attendance on Friday and 730 on Saturday. Sunday attendance was low (appx 100) but on the last day of the Convention and being Sunday a large crowd was not expected. Some of the dealers left late Saturday afternoon in order to be home with their families on Sunday and for other commitments.
Walking the bourse floor all three days it seems there were a lot of positive com-ments being made by the dealers on how good the show has been for them.
Contracts for the 2014 BRNA Convention were passed out to the dealers on Fri-day with a return rate of 80% by Saturday. Some dealers failed to turn the contract in on Saturday and Sunday and we have received some through the mail from these deal-ers. This gives us an indication that the 2014 Convention will be sold out with a wait-ing list for dealers.
This year the show was sold out months ago but a week before the show we had some cancellations due to medical or personal concerns. When we were notified of these cancellations, dealers on the waiting list were called to fill the vacancies. Tues-day night before the Convention we received some last minute cancellation and were able to notify dealers on the waiting list to fill these tables. We would like to thank the dealers for participating and look forward to the 2014 show.
Many thanks to all of the BRNA Officers and Board Members for their help with all aspects of the Convention. Their help was deeply appreciated.

BRNA EXONUMIA:
1997 and 1998 CONVENTION PHONE CARDS By Dave Provost
Though mostly a forgotten numismatic collectible today, there was a time when
colorful, promotional/commemorative phone cards were a hot item within the nu-
mismatic community. They never achieved the same mainstream acceptance as
coins or paper money, but they were popular enough to spawn multiple collector’s
magazines, including Moneycard Collector and TeleCard Collector in the US, as
well as a nearly 800-page illustrated catalog, published by Amos Press, Inc. in
1997, showcasing thousands of cards from the US and Canada.
Phone cards were meant to replace the use of coins in pay telephones. Calls
were placed to a toll-free number which accessed a central service network. Once
the phone card was verified, the caller was connected with the desired telephone
number. The popularity of the early utilitarian cards soon spawned a market for
collectible versions.
An incredible variety of themes and topics were presented on collectible phone
cards and other types of “money cards” during the mid- to late-1990s. Just about
any interest a collector might have had was likely to be featured on one or more
issued cards. Depictions of coins and paper money on the cards were fairly com-
mon. Popular collector coins such as the Indian Head cent, St. Gaudens double
eagle and Morgan dollar were all featured on multiple cards from multiple issuers.
For a time, they were a popular souvenir item for coin and stamp shows. One
could collect dozens of these cards from shows such as the 1994 American Numis-
matic Association Anniversary Convention held in Detroit, the 1995 National Sil-
ver Dollar Convention in Las Vegas, the 1996 El Paso International Coin Show, the
1996 Washington and Baltimore Coin & Currency Show, the 1997 Greater Cincin-
nati Numismatic Expo and a good number of others. The majority of these show
cards were issued between 1994 and 1998. Continued page 9

BRNA EXONUMIA:
1997 and 1998 CONVENTION PHONE CARDS (Continued)
The BRNA joined the list of numismatic shows/conventions to issue a souvenir
phone card in 1997 with a card for its 38th Annual Convention. The card featured a
$1.00 note from the Planters & Mechanics Bank of Dalton, Georgia. The quality of
the note’s reproduction on the card was not very good (possibly the result of the use
of a low-resolution image as its source). As such, the vignettes on the note are very
dark and lacking in detail. Using the Haxby numbering system, the note appears to
be a GA-150-G2b note as it lacks the pink tint seen on G2a notes and appears to
have the hand-written change to the issue date (the last ‘5’ of ‘1855’ overwritten
with a vertical line to make it resemble a ‘6’ to make ‘1856’.) See Figure 1.

1997 and 1998 CONVENTION PHONE CARDS (Continued)
The GA-150-G2a variety of the Planter’s & Mechanics Bank $1.00 note was
used on the 1998 BRNA phone card. The note depicted has an issue date of 1855 and
features a pink tint that reveals the denomination “ONE” below the central vignette.
The image of the note on the 1998 card is much improved over the previous year’s
card with the various vignettes being much brighter and clearer. See Figure 2.

A second card was issued for the 1998 Annual Convention; it featured a piece of
company scrip from the Cherokee Mining Company carrying a “Fifty Cents” de-
nomination. The Cherokee Mining Company was incorporated by the Georgia legis-
lature in 1835. The scrip note is dated ‘October 4, 1862’. See Figure 3 on page 13.

Washington, DC, numismatist, acquired a bag of half cents dated 1828, of the 13-
stars variety. It is believed that about 1,000 coins were involved, all bright uncircu-
lated. By the early 1950s all but a few hundred had been distributed in the market-
place, and by now it is likely that all have individual owners. Source: Redbook

BRNA EXONUMIA:
1997 and 1998 CONVENTION PHONE CARDS (Continued)
Each of the cards was good for five minutes of long-distance telephone service
accessed through TELEDEBIT which was a unit of Interactive Telecard Services
(ITS). The back of each card provided the details for how to use the card to make a
call; the card shown is unused and so its scratch off “Security Label” which hides
its PIN is still in place. See Figure 4.
Figure 4. Back of 1997 BRNA Phone Card
The cards are just slightly larger than a standard business card, each measures 2-
3/32 inches by 3-3/8 inches. The cards were produced in small numbers, with just
100 of each available. Each of the 1998 cards also came in a “Jumbo” version
which was even more limited – just 20 of each Jumbo card were produced.
In addition to being an interesting part of BRNA’s history, these phone cards are
also a nice, inexpensive supplement to a collection of Georgia obsolete bank notes
and/or company scrip and/or Georgia exonumia. Which do you collect?

FAMOUS HOARDS Bank of New York Hoard (1856). Circa 1856, a keg containing several thousand
1787 Fugio copper cents was found at the Bank of New York at 44 Wall Street.
Each was in Mint State, most with brown toning. For many years these were given
out as souvenirs and keepsakes to clients. By 1948, when numismatist Damon G.
Douglas examined them, there were 1,641 remaining. Today, many remain at the
back and are appreciated for their history and value. Source: Redbook.
