TMX Atrium had previously used the integrated IP & SLA monitoring features of their routers to validate performance. As their service offering expanded, and customers increasingly demanded more accurate SLA QoS reporting, Des’ team found that even their core routers were not able to provide the sub millisecond granularity service performance reporting that was demanded by the TMX Atrium client base. TMX Atrium needed a networking and monitoring solution capable of real-time, sub-millisecond measurement sampling visibility with micro second accuracy.

According to Peck, TMX Atrium wanted a future-proof approach. “Since accuracy and sub-millisecond reporting will only become more crucial, we needed a solution that would give us the ability to isolate any issue over our global network, and one that would scale with our growth.” Accedian worked with the team at TMX to tailor a solution that initially monitors end-to-end bi-directional latency across the entire network or along key elements as required. In the future, the Accedian feature set will be able to offer availability, utilization and microburst profiling per flow, while reporting results in real-time, helping to fulfill TMX Atrium’s promise of delivering Smarter Infrastructure Solutions.

THE RIGHT SOLUTION:“We were referred to Accedian by one of our own customers, who were using the Accedian platform to monitor the performance of the TMX Atrium network. We saw how well it worked first hand. We then implemented a large-scale solution that integrates seamlessly in our existing management and reporting platforms, giving us a real-time QoS matrix between all sites. With this solution we are pleased to now be able to move forward and effectively manage latency and the performance of our network with unrivalled visibility,” confirmed Peck.

Benefiting from the flexibility of the Accedian’s network performance elements, modules and the Vision Collect platform, TMX Atrium now has the sub-ms latency reporting that meet the expectations of their customers. This level of accuracy is as important on a global scale as it is between local trading hubs, some of which, like two POPs in Toronto, Canada, are only several hundred meters apart. The solution in the future will be able to measure microbursts, delay variation and packet loss in order to preempt any detrimental network conditions.

Accedian’s FPA wirespeed processor allows the units to be used in place of standard network elements at customer and core locations, delivering both inline-precise performance assurance as well as the service itself without adding delay to customer traffic. TMX Atrium also uses the Nano smart SFP performance module to establish monitoring endpoints where existing network elements continue to be used.
