MARCH LUNCH & LEARN The March Lunch & Learn that was held on March 13 looked into the Arts Field with two local professionals talking to the Middle School students. The presenters included Michael Strong, Executive Director of The Ritz Theatre; and Taylor Elchert, owner of Taylor Elchert Photography. Michael Strong shared his background and his love of theatre with the students. He talked about his education in theatre and theatre production. He explained how hard it is to get hired as a performer and how most work another job to pay the bills. Michael explained his daily routine is different every day as a theater director, but it might involve meeting with artists and/or their agents, attending conferences running a theatre, connecting with new artists, do tasks within the theater to keep it operating. He works on grants, talks to donors, and other activities to raise money for the Ritz. He suggested that any student interested in going into the field of performance should work or volunteer in all levels and all areas of the field. This way you appreciate and understand everyone’s job which leads to better communication. Michael left these words of wisdom for any career the student would enter: “Love what you do!” and “Be who you are!” Taylor Elchert started her business at the age of 15 and has seen it grow yearly. She talked about all the hard work that goes into owning your own business. She walked the students through an average day that would include answering client inquiries, scheduling sessions, consulting with clients, designing sets, photographing, editing, printing orders/delivering, marketing; plus all the business areas of accounting, paying bills, bookkeeping, and keeping the studio clean. Taylor told the students to be successful in the photography business you need the following skills: organization is the key, you must be a people person, and you must have a solid understanding of your camera and editing software. Staying ahead of all the new technology as it becomes available is extremely important also. Taylor gave the middle school students the following advice if they want to become a photographer: Keep taking photos. Take a photography class. Do not let anyone’s negative outlook affect your career path. Talk to business owners about the realities of owning a business.
