NAME TAGS?

Why do

Some people have the attitude that, “My colleagues know my name so why should we wear name tags or badges?”

Obviously that’s a fallacious attitude. I have come to understand that some people pronounce my name correctly when they read my name than when they try to articulate after me.

However, wearing a name tag is not about assisting people to pronounce your name or whether they know your name or not. The culture of wearing a name tag in the line of duty is vital in building a corporate identity.

At the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) we pride ourselves that we are one of the leading provincial departments that wear name tags.

Imagine walking in a store and you can’t spot the difference between store personnel and customers. How embarrassing it is to mistakenly ask a customer about sales or items in a store because you don’t know who is whom? The blame obviously falls on the store management for not having a brand identity or uniform that customers can easily identify.

Let us not even mention hospital nurses without uniform - I would rather go home or to the next hospital than to be served by someone I’m not even sure is a professional nurse.

Name tags and corporate uniforms play a huge role in promoting uniformity among employees and also a sense of trust and recognition among customers. For us at GDED, wearing a name tag not only offers confidence to the public but also epitomises the values and mandate of the department. Furthermore, it

is part of Batho Pele Principles to strive towards a positive customer experience at frontline sites and promote citizens’ rights so that they may hold us accountable for the quality of the services we deliver.

Let us keep up the culture of name tags!

FIVE REASONS TO USE COMPANY NAME BADGESBy Meredith Estepon

Build Corporate Identity Nametags contribute to corporate branding, by adding the business logo to every employee in the company. While nametags are typically restricted to use in the office, they will inevitably get worn to business lunches or even the gas station on the way home from work.

Help Employees Address One Another In larger companies, it can be difficult for employee’s to remember everyone’s name, especially newer employees that are trying to find their place in the business. Nametags allow employees in different departments to build a sense of camaraderie faster.

Keeps Professional Offices Secure When employees are all required to wear company name badges, it is easy to quickly identify who belongs in the office and who does not.

Name badges do more than identify employees; they keep outsiders away from the back office.

Provides Way for Customers to Identify EmployeesWhen your employees wear company name badges, it becomes easy for customers to identify the individuals that work for your business. If a customer suddenly has a question or requires the completion of a transaction, they know exactly where to go for help.

Creates a Conversation Opening Name badges can be a great way for a customer to start up a conversation with one of your employees. This nametag also provides accountability for service employees because the customer knows exactly who he is dealing with from the first moment he makes contact with your employee.

Like any other great plan, it remains nothing until it slips out of pages and makes the difference in the lives of those it is intended for.

Johan Wolfgang von Goethe, a German poet, once said: “Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.”

WHAT IS THE TMR PLAN?The Transformation, Modernisation and Re-Industrialisation plan is a roadmap or pathway that will enable Gauteng Provincial Government to fundamentally address the issues of inequality, poverty and unemployment in the City Region.

TMR plan was adopted by

Gauteng Department of Economic

Development (GDED) as a radical

programme for revitalisation of the

township economy and regeneration

of township infrastructure. The

programme is crucial in stimulating

and sustaining the SMME township

entrepreneurship.

The Ten Pillar programme - anchors the mandate of all the departments in the Province - constitutes:

§ Radical Economic Transformation

The Transformation, Modernisation and Re-Industrialisation (TMR) plan recently became the buzzword among the Gauteng Provincial Government employees, media and business fraternity

and people of Gauteng. Well, the TMR plan was announced by Premier David Makhura during his inaugural State of the Province Address on 27 June 2014.

TMR PLAN:MASHAO MOHALE

Our Roadmap Towards Radical Economic Transformation

§ Decisive Spatial Transformation

§ Modernisation of the Public Service

§ Accelerated Social Transformation

§ Re-Industrialisation of Gauteng Province

§ Modernisation of Public Transport Infrastructure

§ Modernisation of the Economy

§ Modernisation of Human Settlements and Urban Development

§ Taking the lead in Africa’s New Industrial Revolution

The pillars are also dubbed the Four Modernisations; Four Transformations and Two Re-Industrialisations – this approach makes it easy to remember them.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF EMPLOYEES IN THE TMR PLAN?The Transformation, Modernisation and Re-industrialisation plan will not be successful without the conscious participation of GDED and Agencies’ staff members. Employees are therefore the cornerstone of

this plan and the determiners of its success. During the GDED and Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) joint staff meeting, MEC Lebogang Maile emphasised that employees must understand the TMR plan in order for them to participate with consciousness towards its implementation.

“It is important that you take ownership of this programme and give life to its noble intentions. We are all soldiers in the battle against the monster that is unemployment, poverty and inequality. We are all activists and champions for Transformation, Modernisation and Re-Industrialisation,” said MEC Maile.

Frankly speaking, nobody can implement what they do not thoroughly understand. This is why employees should make all efforts to internalise and be clued up about the TMR programme and its objectives. Your energy, creativity and enthusiasm as the key drivers of this agenda are crucial - every employee is critical for the realisation of the plan.

THE SYNERGY BETWEEN THE TMR PLAN AND THE BATHO PELE PRINCIPLESThere is no doubt that the Ten Pillar Programme was formulated mainly to speed up service delivery by Gauteng Provincial Government to the people of Gauteng. This view was echoed by Premier David Makhura during his inaugural State of the Province Address when he emphasised that government cannot talk about radical socio-economic transformation without fundamentally changing the way state institutions relate to society.

“We as public officials and public servants have to radically transform our attitudes and behaviour towards the public to reassert the dictum that we are here to serve the people and not the other way around,” said Premier Makhura.

Drawing from Premier Makhura’s sentiment, it is high time that Batho Pele principles find their expression through employees. It is through access, courtesy, redress, among others, that the Transformation, Modernisation and Re-Industrialisation programme will start to subdue the triple

challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment. This is the reason why employees will always be the key stakeholders and backbone of the successful execution of the TMR plan for the next fifteen years.

To clearly align itself to the programme, the department has adopted five of the ten pillars that are more relevant to its mandate namely:

§ Radical economic transformation;

§ Transforming the state and governance;

§ Modernisation of the public services;

§ Modernisation of the economy;

§ Re-industrialise Gauteng and South Africa; and

§ Take a lead in Africa’s industrial revolution.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TMR PROGRAMME AND THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANThe realisation of the National Development Plan, which will come to its fruition in 2030, will be achieved through the implementation

of the Transformation, Modernisation and Re-Industrialisation programme in the Gauteng City Region.

The TMR plan will, among others, be carried out based on the Game Changers and interventions, which are anchored around the infrastructure development programmes and Gauteng City Region Infrastructure Master Plan.

The Game Changers closely aligned to the Economic Cluster are:

§ Building economies of the future today;

§ Revitalisation of the Township Economy; and

§ Investing in Infrastructure Development.

The journey ahead calls for dedication, discipline and commitment from all of us.

Mahatma Gandhi once said: “The future depends on what you do today.” Our programme of action will, from now on, be dictated by the Transformation, Modernisation and Re-Industrialisation agenda and nothing else.

Better Life

1. Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

4. Don’t take yourself so seriously; no one else does.

5. Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip.

6. Dream more while you are awake.

7. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

10. Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present.

11. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

13. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

14. Smile and laugh more.

15. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

16. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

Lizo Sanda was born 35 years ago in Butterworth, in the Eastern Cape. After completing his matric at the Cunningham High School, Sanda had the good fortune to follow his dream of studying at Fort Hare. In 2005 he obtained a postgraduate degree in Information Science from the University of Fort Hare. Sanda married the love of his life in 2010, “she is my Angel, full stop,” he says with a grin. Sanda’s professional career has been equally positive; he began as a registry clerk at the Office of the President of the Republic Of South Africa. He later joined the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) as Records Manager for four years. Sanda then spent another four years at the Housing Development Agency as Records and Documents Specialist Manager. Looking back at his professional journey, Sanda felt he was thrown in the deep end but he managed to pass with flying colours.

When asked about the world of records and archives management, he suddenly cheers up. “Records are the output of the business and administrative processes of a governmental body. They serve as essential proof of the business transaction and should remain unaltered over time for as long as

they are needed. As evidence of official business, records have on-going use as means of management, accountability, operational continuity, legal evidence and disaster recovery. They also form the memory of the institutions that create them, in our case GDED,” he explains.

According to Sanda, Records Management has and continues to be greatly affected by the digital revolution, which in an emerging economy like ours, presents countless opportunities. However, he indicates that South Africa has a long way to go in terms of becoming a paperless society. “We are still printing payslips yet we have them electronically on ESS,” he remarks.

However, Sanda aims to assist the department to change into an Information and Knowledge Sharing Organisation. “By Information and Knowledge Management Hub, I refer to the work of the Knowledge Management, Archive, Records Management and Library Services. We need a place where even our security and cleaning personnel can have access to GDED internal services,” he says.

Last but not least, Sanda maintains a positive outlook on the future for both himself and the department. “For the next five years I want

to proudly say I have an MBA degree, and the department has a majority of young vibrant individuals who are striving to make a difference in people’s lives,” he concludes.

THE OTHER SIDE OF LIZO SANDA:

1. What quote is your mantra in life? “Good is never enough when best is possible.” - Author Unknown

2. What genre of music do you listen to? My eclectic taste covers every genre, from Abdullah Ibrahim and Amadodana Ase Wesile to William Leonard Roberts II, better known as ‘Rick Ross’.

3. What is the book that inspires you?The Bible for inspiration - and also biographies of history’s most influential personalities, but Steven Bantu Biko’s ‘I Write What I like’, stands out as my all time favourite.

4. What is your favourite movie?I’ m a huge Denzel Washington fan - from the early days of Cry Freedom and Glory, Malcolm X and Training Day, to Man on Fire and Flight.

5. Which meal makes your day? My wife would burn a toast and it will still taste best.

OSCAR: AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN

AUTHOR: MELINDA FERGUSON

Oscar: An Accident Waiting to Happen is the all-exclusive

inside story of ex-girlfriend Samantha Taylor’s tumultuous

romantic relationship with the gold-medal athlete which

turned into every mother’s nightmare.

Told through the eyes of Sam’s mother, Patricia Taylor,

it tracks the heady days of young romance when 24-year-

old Pistorius met her 17-year-old daughter, Sam, and became part of the Taylor family’s close circle. The next

two-and-a-half years would become a roller-coaster ride of extreme highs and dangerous lows as Pistorius’s growing

international celebrity, emotional fragility, broken promises and recklessness consumed the Taylor family.

Written by award-winning author and journalist, Melinda Ferguson, in close collaboration with Patricia Taylor, the book has already attracted huge international interest.

Oscar: An Accident Waiting to Happen will be on shelf and simultaneously released as an e-book after the verdict has

been announced. The authors and book will be featured as part of the breaking news on Good Morning America while various newspapers are presently trying to outbid

each other to serialise the book.

child lost his mother on her way to work in Midrand. We often forget about the ones that get left behind. The ones who might have been dependent on those who are no longer with them. A father. A husband. A mother. A wife.

In 2003, Thabo Jijana’s father was gunned down in a scrap between rival taxi associations who had been forced to operate from a single rank. A decade later, Thabo faces up to South Africa’s most violent industry to try to figure out how and why his father was murdered. In this searing first-person investigation, Thabo puts a face behind a recurrent tragedy that plagues South African working-class communities. He begins by trying to reconstruct the night the murder took place, but what he uncovers about the ongoing strife that has plagued government’s consistent attempts to formalise this multi-million rand industry comes with more baggage than he expected.

PROTECT YOUR INFOPROTECT YOUR EQUIPMENT FROM POWER OUTAGE DAMAGE

Eskom the South African electricity supplier is currently implementing ‘load shedding’ throughout the country. This results in power outages. Sudden power outages can damage electric devices. Sensitive electronics get destroyed and hard drives which contain your applications and programs can be corrupted.

Data LossSudden power outages can damage your computer and result in loss of data. Worst case scenario you can lose important information forever. If you were working extensively on a document unsaved data would be lost.

The following tips can be utilised to deal with the current load shedding situations and to protect your equipment and data from possible damage and loss:

• Save your work regularly whilst working (alternatively Apply Autosave)

• Install power surges

• Familiarise yourself with the published load shedding schedules in order to

be prepared

• Back up your information regularly
