What is Mentorship?
Mentorship is the process of harnessing experience and knowledge and sharing it with others.
It is about people learning from each other and applying the learning and sharing the results.
Opportunity to share their professional knowledge, expertise and career perspective with others
Guidelines
NOT A JOB SEARCH FORUM
However, career transition and job search techniques' are okay to discuss if both parties agree
Face to face meetings should be held in a quiet but public place. One’s home should be avoided.
We are all mature adults It’s up to you Program establishes structure and makes the connections You need to drive it, stick with it, and make it work!
Mentor & Mentee MUST give time and energy to the mentoring partnership to make it work
Must: be open to new ideas, and trust each other
Reciprocity: Mentorship is most successful when both parties learn from each other
Objective
Connect individuals and provide the opportunity to learn from each other’s experience
Mentors provide a safe Sounding Board to discuss topics -technical acumen and experience -business acumen and experience -career experience and guidance
Mentees get to learn from others’ experience and mistakes -ask questions in a safe forum -get differing perspective -ideally accelerate their careers
Commitment
6 months (Feb - Aug)
At least 1 face-to-face meeting ASAP
Regular mentor/mentee meetings
Min: 1 hour / month
Try and schedule if possible. For example: 1st Wed of each Month (7-8pm)
Mentor Support & Best Practice Group – 30 mins
Mentees: Mid Point Check – follow up call
Feedback Survey: June
Follow-through on commitments
Not Expected!

Mentoring Process
Step 1: Build Relationship
Establish trust
Get to know each other
Establish mutual trust and respect confidentially
Explore mentor / mentee history
Share both good AND bad experiences
Allow for open and honest communication
Understand how the mentee prefers to learn; appreciate differences in learning styles and pace
Step 2: Goals
Set Mentor Goals
What does the Mentor want to accomplish over 6 months? For example:
Develop leadership skills
People management skills
Learn about a different industry
Exchange product management tips & tricks
Simply help
Share this with your mentee and gain alignment that this is reasonable

What does the Mentee want to accomplish over 6 months? For example:
Address a challenge at work
Identify & address knowledge gaps
Identify career barriers
Role play different work related situations
Understand what a Product Manager does and how to transition to a PM role
Try and write down, questions, objectives as well as milestones
Share this with your Mentor and gain alignment that this is reasonable

Be a guide but let Mentees make the decisions
