Dear Alumnae and Friends,

As we near the end of another year, the Mary Louis community has many reasons to be thankful. Despite our

local area being greatly affected by the disastrous Hurricane Sandy, our students, alumnae, faculty and staff

immediately reached out to help those in need in whatever way they could. In true Crusader spirit, the Mary

Louis family is working together towards helping our sisters, and many of those affected, regain their strength

and security.

Our community is truly blessed with faith, tradition, and a rich legacy. I hope that as you look through these

pages you share our pride and enthusiasm for the many wonderful accomplishments of the Mary Louis women,

past and present. You are truly strong, vibrant, and successful women who are prepared to meet any and all

challenges with determination and grace.

As we look forward to what must be done to ensure that our school continues to thrive, we will once again be

asking for your support for our Annual Fund. Please consider making a gift to help ensure the Mary Louis spirit

will continue for generations to come. Blessings to you and your family

Sincerely,

S. Kathleen McKinney CSJ, EdD

Over the last few years, TMLA alumnae have hosted regional recep-tions in FL, New York City, New Jersey, CT, Washington, D.C., Scars-dale, Baltimore, and on Long Island.

Regional Receptions gather alumnae in varied locales

These events are a won-derful way to connect with TMLA alumnae in your area - no mat-ter where in the USA you are - and also learn about what’s happening at TMLA today.

On June 7, 2012, Monica Reddy Wood ‘72 hosted a group of alumnae at her home in Lloyd Harbor, NY while on Septem-ber 20, Joyce Zakierski Simmons ‘66 welcomed another group in Sparta, NJ.

Other recent Regional Receptions included

• November 14, 2011 hosted by Miriam Smith Vagt ‘46 in Scarsdale, NY

• March 21, 2012 hosted by Dr. Judith Banzer Farr ‘54 in Wash-ington, DC

• April 18, 2012 hosted by Nora Eberhardt Quig-ley, ‘46 in Ballston Lake,

NY

We believe the Mary Louis community extends far beyond the geographic boundaries of our hilltop. No mat-

ter where you live, you remain a member of the TMLA family. We are all united by memories and traditions, and by a strong belief in the education of young women of vision. We would be so excited and grateful if you were able to keep the Mary Louis connection strong by attending, or hosting one of these events.

If you’re interested in hosting a local alumnae reception, contact Mr. Sean Belon, Director of Alumnae Relations, for more information, 718.297.2120 X286 or [email protected] by

As CIO at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer

Center in New York City, Pat Castel Skarulis ‘62

heads development of one of the country's larg-

est data warehouses for patient care and clinical

research at a single organization. The Web-based

system contains more than 1.2 million cancer

patient records that feed into the center's elec-

tronic health record system, giving clinicians

a unified view of patients' medical history and

treatments.

Pat, who has been at Sloan-Kettering for

nine years, led the implementation of a wire-

less network that enables instant communication among clinicians using

walkie-talkie technology both inside and outside the hospital. She has also led work with IBM in the de-

velopment of pathology analysis systems to help forecast how individual patients will respond to specific cancer

treatments. She's also worked with a multidisciplinary team to develop a chemotherapy order entry system that

does the complex calculations needed to ensure that patients get the proper chemo dosages.

During the recent Digital Health Conference, sponsored by the New York eHealth Collaborative, Pat

outlined the newest technology to treat oncology patients at Sloan-Kettering. The medical center decided to col-

laborate with IBM to “build an intelligence engine to provide specific diagnostic test and treatment recommen-

dations,” explained Pat. Pictured above with Pat (center) at the 75th Anniversary Gala Dinner Dance are, l-r,

Graphic Arts added to TMLA Art curriculumRecognizing the growth of technology in Art, TMLA now of-

fers a course in Graphic Design open to senior Art Majors. The

course, which is funded in part by a NYS grant, allows each

student to work on her own computer designing and creating

all different types of media. The course provides students with

hands-on experience in a field now very much in demand.

TMLA reaches out to Rockaway victimsWhen Super Storm Sandy blew into New York City on October 29, 2012, it tore apart the lives of thousands

of people. Particularly hard hit was the area of the Rockaways, home for decades to many TMLA families and

friends. Plans to aid the area were undertaken by TMLA before school was even reopened. A major effort was

organized by the Service Homerooms and Pax Christi. On November 12th, the Veterans Day holiday, 33 stu-

dents, 10 teachers, and 6 parents descended upon the storm-tossed Rockaway Peninsula

with buckets, mops, brooms, shovels, garbage bags, and more, eager to

help with the cleanup. Working out of St. Francis DeSales Church in

Belle Harbor, groups worked in a variety of areas such as sorting cloth-

ing donations, cleaning houses, and working on the distribution line.

Students also worked with FEMA, helping to register people

for the government services. TMLA also sponsored a drive for

food and other items needed by Sandy’s victims which netted

three van loads of badly needed supplies.

The TMLA family is strong and far reaching! Cory Rameau ‘12 just

entered her Freshman year at Barry University with an academic schol-

arship. Upon hearing that Cory was attending Barry and was a TMLA

alumna, the President of the University, S. Linda Bevilacqua OP, PhD,

TMLA Class of 1958, made a point of searching out Cory, introducing

herself and sitting down for a conversation with her. The TMLA con-

nection lasts far beyond your 4 years on “the hill”!!

Erin Freeley ‘95 demonstrates “Prowess” in developing her own public relations firm

Once a reporter for the MARIEL, Erin Freeley ‘95 has expanded her media skills to head her own Public Relations firm.

Erin is the Principal and Founder of Prow-essPR. www.prowessPR.com, a company she started in June 2007. “After working on the agency-side for more than five years, I saw an oppor-tunity to work with start-ups who were looking

for cost-effective, results oriented public relations programs,” explains Erin.

Today, ProwessPR is a New York-based con-sultancy that special-izes in the promo-tion of seed funded, emerging start-ups as well as established technology and con-sumer brands. We offer a flexible suite of services that can be selected a la

carte, to ensure that the needs of each and every client are met.

Says Erin, a graduate of Our Lady of Mercy Grammar School in For-est Hills, the University of San Diego and Long

Island University, “At ProwessPR, we deliver creative and effective PR campaigns for national and international clients at every stage of growth, providing senior-level counsel with the foresight to stay ahead of a rapidly evolving market. We take the time to un-derstand our clients’ chal-lenges and opportunities and how they’re perceived in the industry, working to make them stand out.”

Some of the clients that Erin has served include, CircleUp: an equity-based crowdfunding investment platform that connects individual investors with growing private compa-nies, Pathbrite: delivers next generation digital portfolios to help indi-viduals and institutions collect, track and show-case achievements of all kinds. Pathbrite Portfolios enable students to col-lect, curate, reflect on and share all the evidence of their learning and

achievements and Sum-mly: redefines news for the mobile world with algorithmically generated summaries from thou-sands of sources. Innova-tive gestures, animations and great summaries make reading the news fun.

The benefits and advan-tages to having started her own business are clear to Erin. “Starting ProwessPR has enabled me to work with amazing clients and represent companies that I am truly passionate about. I also have a flex-ible work schedule and am my own boss.”

If you have a business you have started and would like to share your entre-preneurial experience, please contact us at [email protected].

Marlynne Bidos, J.D. ’01, has been awarded an Ambassadorial Scholar-ship from the Rotary Foundation to obtain a degree in Master of Laws in Information Technology & Intel-lectual Property at the University of Hong Kong.

Marlynne graduated from Temple University in 2005 and received her J.D. from Loyola University in 2009. She was an attorney and Program Policy & Compliance Advisor for Alternative Schools & Programs for the NYC DOE. She is also a mem-ber of TMLA’s Alumnae Mentoring Program.

In addition to the scholarship from the Rotary Foundation, Bidos was also recently selected for a Ful-bright Fellowship to do research in Ghana next year. She chose the Rotary award because it will pro-vide an opportunity for her to study intellectual property management from a human rights perspective.

Declares Marlynne, “I intend to build upon the legal training I’ve received to create country-led intel-lectual property business solutions that will diminish poverty and ultimately lead to less dependence on foreign aid.”

Marlynne is also the co-founder of Konbit Pou Edikasyon (Working Together for Education) a non-profit based in Haiti that provides finan-cial support and services to ensure the academic success of students in Haiti through the completion of their secondary education. KPE works collaboratively to connect students with academic, social and post-secondary opportunities. She developed KPE with the belief that education is the catalyst for com-munity advancement.

Says Marlynne of her beloved academy, “TMLA added to the foundation of morals, ethics, and core values that my parents built and instilled within me. It pro-vided the structure necessary to be a disciplined student and gave me the encouragement needed to be a vision-ary woman. I remember a ban-ner hanging in the foyer that said ‘Creating women of vision for the 21st century.’ Nothing could be more accurate.

The teachers really led us to believe that we could be and do anything, and this theme carried through in the curriculum, school projects, Spirit Week, and school culture. Looking back on my experiences in high school, I know it was the sum of all of these elements that culti-vated my spirit for leadership and excellence. As I continue to strive for greater personal and profes-sional accomplishments, I carry the guiding principles I learned at TMLA with me.” Marlynne will chronicle her Hong Kong trip via her blog site: www.icmbasia.tumblr.com.
